Sanaa Lathan chooses her words carefully as she denies biting Beyonce ‘maliciously’

Kirsten Dunst shows off what appears to be her growing baby bump

Throughout the month of March, we were obsessed with a story involving Tiffany Haddish and Beyonce. Tiffany gave an interview to GQ where she revealed that a mystery actress BIT Beyonce on the face during a party. Tiffany did not reveal the name of the Mystery Biter, and so it became a fascinating blind item for a time, as various actresses came out to publicly deny that they were the dumb drugged-out Becky Who Bit Beyonce. That was another part of the blind item: Beyonce reportedly said, to Tiffany, that the Mystery Biter was “on drugs.” Well, long story short, TMZ claimed that Sanaa Lathan was the mystery biter and now everyone sort of believes that. Sanaa fits the criteria, and so I sort of believe it too. But Sanaa is on the cover of Health Magazine and in the interview, she sort of denies biting Beyonce… except she never says explicitly, “No, I never bit Beyonce.” Hm. You can read the full Health piece here. Some highlights:

On the “who bit Beyonce?” thing: “Yeah, it blew up. And I think it’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever been involved with. Thank God I’ve been in this business for 20 years and have had so many rumors about me. They used to devastate me in my 20s, but in order to survive in this business, you just have to let it roll. I adore Beyoncé. I would never do anything malicious like that—to her, or to anyone. It’s so bizarre. I thought it was the funniest thing ever that it was a news story. It’s so crazy.”

Shaving her head for her new film, ‘Nappily Ever After’: “It was terrifying! But to me, it’s so much a part of her journey. My character is in crisis, and everything that she thought she knew is unraveling. So the emotions were all over the place for me—because I’m playing Violet, but I’m also shaving my head! It was actually really powerful and kind of weirdly cathartic and freeing. You know, I was crying, I was laughing…

When she feels her healthiest: “I recently went for three weeks to this detox kind of place where you eat raw food and wheatgrass every day, and you do wheatgrass enemas—it’s, like, seriously crunchy, hippie. [Laughs] But you come out of there sparkling.

Whether she’s vegan: “I’m vegan-ish. If I’m gonna go to a restaurant, I’ll have some eggs, or I need to have sushi every now and then. I’m not hardcore, but I try to make it more than half of my diet.

On anxiety, self-care & PTSD: “One of the biggest changes in my life is that I meditate every day. Four years ago, my best friend died. She got the flu, and four days later she went to the doctor and soon after she was just gone. It was so devastating to me. I had a weird kind of PTSD, because she was healthier than me. I started getting panic attacks. Before that, I didn’t think they were a real thing. I remember my girlfriend having them, and I was like, “Girl, just breathe,” you know? “Just relax.” I was getting [panic attacks] three to five times a day. They wanted to put me on anti-anxiety medication, but I was like, “I really don’t wanna take drugs, that’s just not me.” I’d had a meditation teacher a couple years before, so she gave me a refresher course. The day that I started Transcendental Meditation, it was as if I was taking a pill. They went away. So anyway, that’s my thing. I meditate 20 minutes, twice a day.

She doesn’t want to take anti-anxiety medication but she’ll take drugs and BITE BEYONCE? Hm. But look at how she answered the Beyonce question – “I think it’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever been involved with.” Yeah, but that’s not really a denial. “I adore Beyoncé. I would never do anything malicious like that—to her, or to anyone.” So she didn’t bite Beyonce maliciously – okay. But she did bite her. Perhaps she meant it playfully, but it was notable enough where Tiffany Haddish freaked out when she found out about it.

Yeah she did it. Her “non” denial is too obvious. That being said, I have a soft spot for Sanaa. Some of her movies are my faves & she looks beautiful here.

  2. Dtab says:

Okay so you should absolutely NEVER EVER bite or touch anyone…. But this has been blown way outta proportion, I don’t think whoever did it meant to physically hurt Beyoncé. If it was anyone else it would not have been this big of a story

  3. Lululemon says:

I do genuinely think that the whole situation was a bit blown out of proportion. Tiffany Haddish seems loud-mouthed and obnoxious, just out to get attention. I can imagine that a cheeky ‘bite’ on the cheek (I do this to my partner sometimes) can be funny or cute. That is not to say though, perhaps Sanaa misread the signals hence the weirdness.

    • Tonya says:

i think she was drinking and having fun and it was a Play full or flirty bite nothing malicious i believe even beyonce reaction was too much, it was nothing beyonce is a stuck up fake *** lol if she didnt react the way she did and just brush it would have never been mentionned. -_-

  4. Lynnie says:

Yeah idk. I’m honestly just confused with the whole entire thing. I still don’t get why Tiffany talked about this story in the first place

    • Clare says:

I agree – I not mall yet really like Haddish but in this instance I feel like she totally blew something out of proportion that has turned into a bit of a nightmare for another woman.

Doesn’t matter was haddish’s intention was or if she was just having a laugh – she threw mystery biter under the bus by not just talking about this, but by talking about it repeatedly. She is a grown woman, she knows what the Beyhive is like, and she knew the woman who ‘but beyonce’ would fave their wrath.

  5. ChillyWilly says:

“Perhaps Sanaa misread the signals hence the weirdness. ” Yep, because “perhaps” she was hopped up on drugs. I also love how she subtly drops in that she hates taking drugs of all kknds, even anti depressants. Sure, Jan.

    • mssinglemalt says:

Some actors do not take anti depressants/anti anxiety as they feel it would limit their ability to emote, get into character or express their emotion on film.

So you could still justify indulging in recreational drugs that would leave system before a shoot.

    • KLO says:

      @ChillyWilly
Addictive behaviours are often compulsive. It has nothing to do with love. For example, if an emotional eater is hurting, they will compulsively start to look for something to eat (preferrably something high carb or fatty) to get zonked out and have no choice but to relax.
      Same with drugs.
      Love is not compulsion.

But yeah, she probably has some kind of addiction problem. And I send her my best wishes and hope she gets better.

  6. Peace Out says:

And she went away for 3 weeks. Hope she’s better

  7. Lady Rain says:

I’m still confused by the whole biting story because Tiffany never gave any real context to it – it was just like, this actress bit Beyonce’s face. So many questions remain unanswered.

Sanaa looks gorgeous and I can’t wait to see her latest film.

  8. Louise177 says:

I feel like I’m missing something because Sanaa clearly says she didn’t bite Beyonce. I think the situation blew up because of the way Tiffany told the story. She was very excited and gossipy.

    • Kitkatk8 says:

Same here! I’m confused how she supposedly halfway admitted it? Read like a clear denial to me….
