Gah, I am a sucker for a really bold and striking graphic on a big stage. So many women go for solid colors on a red carpet, which I understand – it’s a safer choice, and if you go with a big, bold graphic, you might end up looking like you’re wearing a cartoon. But this is just… magnificent. These are photos from Cannes Day 3, the gala premiere of Sorry Angel. Amber Heard wore this incredible Valentino gown with one of the best “skirts” of the year. Honestly, I don’t like the top part – the gown should have had more coverage, even if she’s small-breasted enough to make this work without looking obscene. The slim boob-covers resemble suspenders and detract from the magnificence that is THE SKIRT.
Speaking of bold, here’s Cate Blanchett in Mary Katrantzou Spring 2018. It’s a puffy mullet dress. I imagine that it “crunches” when she sits down. I mean, I like that Cate went bold and a little crazy. But this dress is not my cup of tea.
After all that big drama, Léa Seydoux in this Louis Vuitton mini-dress is kind of meh, right?
Araya A. Hargate in Ralph and Russo Fall 2017. The R&R made me think of Meghan Markle and wedding dresses, and then I couldn’t stop giggling because… imagine if Meghan Markle wore this on her wedding day?? Something with a sheer skirt and granny panties? Come on, the Queen would freak the f–k out. Anyway, this gown is soap-opera-star-at-the-Daytime-Emmys.
Sui He also wore Ralph and Russo, this gown is from the Spring 2018 collection. To my eyes, this reads on-camera as an off-white, but technically it’s supposed to be “pale mint green.” If Meghan Markle does go with R&R for her wedding gown, I hope it’s more like this – the skirt of this gown is flat-out exquisite. The whole gown is gorgeous, but they wouldn’t let Meghan go strapless for her wedding!

Love Sui He’s gown. That is gorgeous and a way to do a gown that is both simple and interesting.
Cate blanchett – I don’t love it, but I like that she always wears something different and interesting on the red carpet, without looking like she is going for the ugliest dress she can find. Her choices are usually “different” but fashionable.
Agree completely re: Amber Heard. the skirt is gorgeous, but the top takes away from it.

And I agree with Kaiser about the magnificent skirt of Amber’s dress.
The thing about the top is that it’s just too tiny to have any aesthetic or stylistic relationship to the skirt. Of course I’m not saying the bodice should be big or voluminous like the skirt — just that it’s so scanty it doesn’t quite work with the skirt. I love the fabric of the top, and the color of it, and also love the plunging neckline…and the bodice HAD to be sleek and close-fitting with such a voluminous skirt, but just a bit more fabric on top would give better visual balance to the skirt.
Still, it’s a gorgeous dress and Amber wears it very well.
Cate’s dress looks like a colouring book – the image is only partially filled in though.
The R&R dress in the last photo is exquisite. I would wear that anywhere, anytime.
Sui He’s dress looks very interesting – wish we had more pics and one that shows the color a bit more.
I don’t mind the print on Amber’s dress but the top of it is awful, just awful. It’s unflattering and vulgar. On the plus side, her hair and make-up are lovely.

I love Cate’s dress. Maybe not the style so much, but the pattern is just so beautiful.
Amber’s Valentino is gorgeous, but it was too big for her. In some pictures you can see the waist absolutely gaping open in the back, and the way the top was hanging off her it’s amazing she didn’t have a wardrobe malfunction. It’s obviously a sample, but you’d think someone could have at least spent a few minutes fixing the fit a bit with safety pins and double sided tape.

Cate’s dress is a “paint by numbers” pattern. I was thinking that it looked like an adult coloring book, then noticed numbers on the white spaces, which means it’s an adult coloring book for adults who don’t want to make any decisions (or have had a glass of wine. Or three).

I like Cate’s dress better than Amber’s.
The blue is very striking and she doesn’t feel the need to show off a lot of flesh to make a statement.
Ambers doesn’t look like it fits well it looks too big and I can’t Unser the suspenders now!
The waist band was handled awkwardly on Amber’s gown, otherwise it might look interesting; as is, I see a fever dream of disproportion.

OT, but I can totally see Meghan wearing those arm trains that were all over the Ralph and Russo runway. I think she’ll go for a formfitting dress but add those or some sort of cape for dramatics.

I think Cate is wearing the shit out of that dress, so whatever complaints I have about mullet hems is pretty pointless. Amber’s dress would be lovelier if the top wasn’t so obnoxious. Talk about boob squish.
I don’t really like her shoes in the first pic. They make her feet look the opposite of pigeon-toed because of their design. The dress is gorgeous.
Amber looks stunning. She’s such a beautiful woman and can pull pretty much anything off. Agreed that the top is quite…minimal, though.
I can’t stand that thing Amber’s doing by putting glitter underneath her eyes, it looks so strange! I’ve seen drag queens pull it off wonderfully but it really bugs me here.

Not a mullet fan here but I love Cait’s dress & how the band at the waist parallels the hem line.
Unless Amber’s bodice is glued to her skin, there’s an under-boob gap that makes for a revealing side view. The top is too skimpy + would look better in red, imho.
