Disney has greenlighted a Star Wars spinoff/origin film about… Boba Fett…?

Don’t get me wrong, I love A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Love them. Seen them a million times. Obsessed with them. I loathe Episodes I-III. I was okay with The Force Awakens, and I still (quite honestly) haven’t seen The Last Jedi. I’m generally okay with the core Star Wars stories being told. But all of the spinoffs are starting to annoy me. I don’t care what people say – Rogue One was not a good movie. Solo: A Star Wars Story probably wasn’t worth the trouble and expense, let’s be real. Now they’re going to do a spinoff story about BOBA FETT. I sh-t you not.

James Mangold is writing and will direct a Star Wars stand-alone movie centered on Boba Fett, the feared bounty hunter and fan-favorite character, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned. The reveal comes as Disney and Disney-owned Lucasfilm prepare for the release of the latest Star Wars stand-alone film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo, which opens Friday, is the second movie to be spun from the main Star Wars line — Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first — but it is the first to focus on a particular character.

Lucasfilm is developing movies on a slew of characters including Obi-Wan Kenobi, which has Stephen Daldry in negotiations to direct, although no writers are working on a script.

It was rumored that Simon Kinberg, the writer-producer behind the X-Men franchise and films such as The Martian, was working on a Boba Fett movie. While Lucasfilm and Disney won’t make any official confirmation, sources say that Mangold will co-write the script with Kinberg, who will also produce the Boba Fett project. Kinberg and Mangold are close, having worked on Logan, the X-Men spinoff that earned high praise last year.

Boba Fett was introduced in 1980’s Empire Strikes Back and then appeared in 1983’s Return of the Jedi as the mercenary who brings Han Solo to the slug-like crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Despite having a helmet over his face and very limited time onscreen (not to mention a slapstick death), the character, with his jet pack and battle-scarred armor, grew to cult status.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I remember when I was a freshman in college, I had a crush on this hot guy and literally all he could talk about was his obsession with Boba Fett. That’s what I always remember whenever I hear the name Boba Fett. And no, I never got with the guy (God he was hot though). My point? I don’t know. This annoys the sh-t out of me. We’re getting an Obi-Wan standalone film, a Boba Fett standalone/origin film, a Han Solo standalone film… but we’re not getting a Leia standalone. Or a Lando standalone. Why? People have been saying from the very beginning that Lando – out of all the characters – deserved a standalone. They’ll probably get to it after they make all of the films about the white dude characters. And maybe a standalone movie about the Cantina Band.

Rogue One was one of the best Star Wars movies.

    • Lala says:

THANK YOU!!!! Empire & Rogue One…THAT’S THE BEST OUT OF THE BUNCH FOR ME!!!!

    • Kaiser says:

It really was not, in my opinion.

      • Veronica S. says:

I think it had a lot of potential that was blatantly dashed by executive meddling. You can literally pinpoint the moment where they radically changed the ending because the feel of the entire movie shifts about 3/4 of the way in. I like it, but I really wish I could’ve seen the movie Gareth Edwards originally wanted to direct.

Not to mention – why cast a female character in the lead role if you’re just going to undermine her agency at every turn with the male co-lead?

      • Kath says:

I agree. I was completely underwhelmed. It was the point at which I thought they’ve really got to stop milking Star Wars or risk ruining the whole thing.

    • Shuler says:

      Yeah I agree.

  2. Veronica S. says:

Unsurprising. He’s one of the most popular side characters in Star Wars fandom, and his role in the prequel trilogy actually opened up some interesting avenues where they can take him. (Certainly more than Han Solo actually provided.) Whether they actually do anything creative with it is another issue.

I’m pretty much burned out on Disney Star Wars, though, which is a really sad statements because it was one of my absolute favorite series growing up. The combination of how women and minorities were treated in Rogue One, TLJ, and Solo combined has more or less soured the appeal. We should be moving forward at this point, not backwards.

Boba Feet was THE MAN for my brother when he was really
young, in the late 70’s/early 80’s. My guess is it was the same for these film makers, a generational thing.
I’m Star Wars trash, so I’m fine with this.

  4. CairinaCat says:

I agree, I loved Rogue one.
And people will be all over a Boba Fett movie, for true star wars nerds, the ones who have read all the books and know the Canon. He is a big deal and one of the best story lines.
Obi wan is one of my favorites.
They should do some stuff set during the clone wars. And focus on his relationship with Anakin at that time. They were both great generals . And there were other great Jedi with neat stories.
Lando I’m not as fussed about personally

  5. manda says:

    Of course they have! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I’m totally getting off this train

  6. Jenns says:

I thought the first half of Rogue One was a mess. The second half was fun, but it felt like two different movies.

I still maintain that The Last Jedi is one of the best Star Wars films ever(fight me, lol).

I’ll see all things Star Wars. I have my ticket for Solo tomorrow. But, I have been disappointed with the lack of diversity with the writing/directing teams. And if they’re going to continue with these spin-offs, they’ve got to get it together and stop with all the behind the scenes drama.

  7. Emilia says:

The characters of Jango and Boba Fett were played by Maori actors in the prequels. This will not be “just another white dude movie.” As long as Kennedy doesn’t mess this up it will be the first SW movie centered completely around a POC lead. Don’t minimize that kind of representation just because you’re sick of Star Wars movies.

  8. Astrid says:

” And maybe a standalone movie about the Cantina Band. ” Good one!

  9. Lori says:

Boba Fett and his father Jango Fett aren’t played by white actors in the Clone Wars. They’re played by Daniel Logan and Temuera Morrison; both natives from New Zealand and have pacific islander traits and appearance. Assuming they follow what has already been established, this is actually a step in a good direction for representation (as would a back story on Leia becoming a general).

  10. MMFuzzyface says:

Side thought: Didn’t Angelina Jolie once say she would love to play Boba Fett?

  11. Kath says:

God, enough. What next? A movie about the bartender or Jabba’s pet rat? Stop ruining Star Wars, Disney! I loved the first movie of this ‘reboot’, but hated The Last Jedi and the stupid and unnecessary casino bit.

  12. Misty says:

We don’t know for sure wat color he is, though his dad in the prequels looked polynesian. So we could get The Rock as Boba Fett.
