Elizabeth Hurley: ‘Hugh Grant is my oldest friend, I get on with Anna incredibly well’

I don’t watch the E! series The Royals, but only because I don’t have cable. The show’s star, Elizabeth Hurley, is featured on the cover of Britain’s Grazia magazine – for their Luxe Issue, which seems like a perfect fit.

Along with some stunning photos, the 52-year-old actress, model and swimwear entrepreneur discussed her role on The Royals, describing her character, the fictional British monarch Queen Helena, as a cross between Cruella de Ville and Joan Collins (who plays her mother on the show). She reveals that while she’s used Botox for her forehead, she’s bene “too scared” to have plastic surgery. She also dismissed fillers with a “forget about it!” As for her fitness regime, Elizabeth said, “I’m not a vegan who lives on green juices, I don’t go to the gym religiously.” She added that she’s had to give up yoga and Pilates for eight months after injuring her shoulder with a hedge trimmer.

As for her love life, she discussed her past relationships with Hugh Grant, Steve Bing, ex-husband Arun Nayar and her ex-fiancé, Australian cricketer Shane Warne, whom she broke up with five years ago. She also hinted to the magazine that she’s now dating another famous man. Here’s a bit of what she had to say:

On maintaining relationships with her exes (except Bing):
“Hugh is my oldest friend, Arun is my best friend too and I adore Shane – it’s pretty hard to break up from a best friend. They’re still people you want to share both good and bad things with. Hugh is very happy with his girlfriend [now wife] Anna, they’ve got three kids together and I get on with Anna incredibly well.”

“You can’t annihilate the past, you have to make friends with it, otherwise you’ve got these terribly dark areas – we are our past so it would be pretty sad to tear up photographs and delete everything.”

On dating “in the biz”:
“We’ve all lived out of suitcases our entire professional lives, passport in our bags the whole time, all of us in the public eye, we just get it. You never have any ties in our business, you can never commit. If I had to fly to New York tomorrow to work I’d go in a heartbeat. People who aren’t in that life can find it very difficult to adapt.”

Is she dating now?
“I’m not saying anything because it wouldn’t be fair. I’ve made a vow, unless I’m engaged to somebody, I don’t talk about anybody, sorry, I know that’s boring.”

[From Grazia]

So, is Elizabeth dating now? Elizabeth was linked to music producer David Foster last year, but he’s sort of spoken for at the moment, I guess. I do think the timing of this interview is a little suspect. It reminds me of people (who may or may not have been me at some points) who make sure to post happy pictures, preferably with a potential new mate, on social media, hoping the ex will see. Hugh Grant did just get married after all. Oh, and there are also those frequent bikini pics on Instagram. Yes, I know she has her own swimwear line, but, really….

Regardless if she and Anna “get on” well, I can’t help but think that for Elizabeth, Hugh, despite his glaringly obvious past flaws, will always be “the one that got away.” I can totally relate. I also can’t wrap up this post without recognizing Elizabeth’s commitment to fighting breast cancer. Last week the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s Annual Hot Pink Party, which was emceed by Elizabeth and co-chaired by Leonard and Judy Lauder (Leonard is the son of makeup great Estée Lauder), raised over $5.5 million for breast cancer research. She’s good people, and I hope she finds her happily ever after, whether that’s single or attached.

At first glance, I thought that picture was of Lindsay Lohan :S

    • minx says:

I thought so too! She’s another brunette who needs to stay that way, too much blonde isn’t flattering on her.

I always really admire how well she gets on with her exes. Her friendship with Hugh is really sweet, and while I don’t know why she and her ex-husband broke up, I think they handled their split incredibly maturely when it came to her son- Arun is not his biological father, but he had always seen him as his dad, and apparently that never changed when they split, they put aside whatever issues they had with each other and Elizabeth always supported their relationship staying the same, which I think is just really lovely on both of their parts. Like you, I hope she finds a lasting happiness with somebody, she seems like a nice lady.

    • Betsy says:

Aw, that kind of thing is very sweet. If a bio parent is out of the picture and someone steps in forever, even if the adult relationship falls apart, I find that commendable.

This interview would have been completed well before Hugh’s marriage, don’t think he had anything to do with this. And of course she’s going to promote her swimwear line, now is the time of year to do that. I admire her positive attitude toward her exes as well.

    • perplexed says:

I agree. I think she’s always had swimsuit shots up on her Instagram. I don’t think it’s a recent phenomenon — her swimsuit line has been around for awhile.

Plus…they broke up decades ago. She probably could have made a play for him at any time since then since they hang out regularly.

I don’t think Hugh is “the one that got away” for Elizabeth, I think it’s the other way around. I love that they’ve remained such good friends, though. Isn’t he her son’s godfather? I’ve always liked her. She & Brendan Fraser were so cute together in Bedazzled.

    • LT says:

Agreed. Nothing about Elizabeth at that time or since implied she was pining for Hugh Grant.

Regarding her health regime – I think diet has a lot to do with it. She once said she didn’t eat breakfast and was hungry a lot of the time, so while she might not be a gym rat, she’s pretty disciplined about what she eats.

      • Rhys says:

I don’t know how people keep their bodies by exercising AND eating whatever they want. Limiting portions is the only way that I saw gives results. 80%diet, 20% exercise not the other way around. Unless you are a body builder or training for triathlon, if you eat a lot you will stay big.

      • Betsy says:

When she first became famous here in the mid-90s, I was a teen and I so envied her her amazing body.

    • Rhys says:

That’s funny because that’s how I read it, that it was Elizabeth who “got away.” And agreed 🙂

    • perplexed says:

He publicly cheated on her with a hooker and it was all over the media. I think they love each other in their own “best friends’ kind of way, but when you factor in that scandal, it’s hard for me to think she regrets breaking up with him (even if he is really witty and snappy in that British way. Although since she’s British herself, she’s probably not as impressed by it).

  5. Rhys says:

Nah, interviews get scheduled months in advance, so highly unlikely she had to “show ‘em!”
She sounds incredibly reasonable and mature. This is the kind of person who can stay friends with anybody and everybody.

  6. Carrie1 says:

She’s a good soul I think. Photos like this are not new, she’s been posting for years like this.

I think both she and Hugh are genuinely happy with their respective lives and not pining for each other. They’re quite close friends. I believe what she says here.

A while ago I looked into Hurley and Grant by playing with numerology. They are each other’s doppelgänger sort of in spirit. They are the same. It’s the most interesting match I’ve ever found. They are genuine friends and they’re both ahead of their time almost, what with their respective relationships and approaches to same. They are kind of awesome to me looking at it from a distance. We could probably learn from them. I dunno, I find playing with these tools adds an understanding of people which is positive and helps us grow.

  7. JustJen says:

In the formal gown pic she look so much like Marlee Matlin. She just doesn’t look the same at all.

  8. bella says:

She looks like time has stopped for her, especially in the blue bikini! Gorgeous inside and out!

  9. saltandpepper says:

Shane Warne. Forgot about that one. Girl has terrible taste in men.

  10. ladida says:

I can rarely stay such good friends with an ex, so I really admire her for that. I agree with her that it can lead to some “dark areas” but that’s life. I still love my two main ex boyfriends, seeing them regularly or keeping in touch would make it hard for me to move on. I’ve noticed American culture is different from the brits in this way. Like Harry inviting his exes to his wedding.

  11. Dissa says:

She’s looking a little Lindsay Lohan-ish in that teal blouse.

  12. raincoaster says:

I like her so much. She’s very Alpha Bitch, and high maintenance, but she’s also fun, smart, honest, and witty. And she does not front. When asked about her fitness routine she said, “I smoke and I go to bed hungry every night of my life.” She’s not one of those people who claims it all comes naturally.

I have an old copy of Tatler that has a photo of her and Hugh at an Oxford ball when they were just out of their teens. Both of them gorgeous beyond words. That’s a lot of track record.
