Evangeline Lilly: ‘This is the hardest time in history to keep your spirit in your body’

Full confession: I’ve never watched Lost *ducks under table.* I am aware, however of Evangeline Lilly. I don’t have an opinion one way or the other, but I am aware of her. The 39-year-old actress and mother of two is reprising her role as Hope Van Dyne, a/k/a Wasmp in the upcoming Ant Man and the Wasp, arriving in theaters on July 6th.

Evangeline is on the cover of the July/August issue of SHAPE magazine, sharing how she stays “driven and serene.” She got into superhero shape with sprint workouts and eating healthy and touts the benefits of stretching, as it “relaxes you and keeps your muscles from tensing up, but it also strengthens you.” Here’s some of what she had to say:

On what she wants in life: “I’m a strange mix of someone who is quite reclusive and comfortable with very little but driven professionally. I don’t need to be famous, but I do have an enormous desire to influence people and connect with them. It gives me satisfaction to know that I’ve touched others.”

On doing meaningful work: “Sometimes I wonder if I’ve taken on too much, but I just want to live out as much potential as I can.”

On how she stays grounded: “I think this is the hardest time in human history to keep your spirit in your body. We have constant distraction and choice, which can be very destabilizing and get in the way of experiencing life. So it’s important to engage in activities regularly that reunite you with yourself. For some people it’s prayer, reading, meditation, or a breathing practice. For others it’s a dinner party.”

Despite keeping tight tabs on her physical fitness and diet, Evangeline made sure to point out that a little Hollywood magic helped her look good in her Wasp suit, admitting, “I’m wearing a corset! People don’t look like that.”

I love Paul Rudd and I’m looking forward to Ant Man and the Wasp (fun fact: Wasp is the first female character in the MCU to have her name in the film’s title.) We’ve come a long way, and hopefully, there will be more. Captain Marvel is out next year.

Aw Corey, you should watch Lost! Thanks to my son I’ve watched the whole thing three times now. The production values sometimes seem sort of laughable now in the age of HBO shows but the story holds up surprisingly well for me.

Evangeline is a such a beauty. I remember marveling at how she looked equally good “natural” on the island and made up and more together off the island. And I agree with what she says about people needing to find a way to stay healthy. My mental health is taking a big hit from Trump but occasionally I can find peace.

Number one…I LOVE HER! When I first saw “Ant-Man” (which by the way…I am STILL shocked at how much I LOVED that movie)…when I saw her on screen…I almost stood up and clapped…cause she looked and acted like a FULL GROWN A– WOMAN!!!! And what she said about it’s so hard keeping your spirit in your body? YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Cause things are so AWFUL and we’re getting it from EVERYWHERE…and it would be easier to disconnect so that you can’t process that mess…but that does even MORE damage…I feel like we could kick it for real!!!!

^^ Everything!! Are you me??!! I feel like you wrote what’s on my mind better than I could lol. How surprisingly great was Ant Man though? It’s now one of my rainy day favourites that I’ll rewatch when I need cheering up. It’s true that dissociating feels good…so so good…but we gotta find small comforts to stay sane so we can keep close tabs on what’s going on!!

It’s a really fun movie. And while other MCU films deal with bromances or father-son, these are all about father-daughter relationships. With a special added dollop of Bobby Cannavale.

I wonder if we’ll ever reach the day when all the celebrities will have finally “discovered” yoga and don’t feel the need to talk to us about it anymore.

I’ve never watched Lost either!!!! *right there under the table with you*
But I remember that Lilly wrote a fictional book? For kids? Or am I delirious?
Her fashion sense is idiosyncratic to say the least.

She’s always been uber fit. She is from British Columbia (where I’m from) and as a Province we are the considered the most active in Canada. She was (is?) an avid snowboarder and outdoor enthusiast so I can see that she is fit and active still.
I think she’s lovely and I have no shade for anything she says. She is extremely level headed and well grounded.
I can’t believe I’ve never seen Ant Man…guess I should get on that since I adore Paul Rudd (who doesn’t).

I hate those superhero movies, but Ant Man was actually good. You will enjoy it.

I loved Ant Man (I’m a sucker for anything with Paul Rudd) and am looking forward to the new one. I haven’t been following this one as far as the cast, but if it’s anything like the first one it’ll be a fantastic lineup.

    • Lightpurple says:

They added Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne and Walton Goggins to the previous cast of Lilly, Rudd, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Douglas and Judy Greer.

Really looking forward to this as the First was so much fun.

Nice! Thanks for the info. I guess I could have googled it, but I intend to see it no matter what 😉

I love Evangeline! She’s great in Lost and seems to be just like a down-to-Earth hippy chick. I remember reading that she used to climb the trees on set in Hawaii and chill in them.

  8. Yes Doubtful says:

She’s so beautiful. I miss her relationship with Matthew Fox. I hope they do a show together again one day.

PS – you have to watch LOST!!!
