Kim Kardashian visited a women’s prison, might work to combat recidivism

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West take their Birthday girl North West to the Sugar Factory

Kim Kardashian clearly has Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s phone numbers. Ivanka and Jared were the ones facilitating Kim’s meeting with Donald Trump, where Kim personally lobbied for Trump to pardon or commute Alice Marie Johnson’s sentence. Kim’s meeting worked in that Trump did give a commutation to Johnson. Kim’s plot worked, and she received a lot of praise for briefly using her power and her celebrity for good. I even suggested that she should sign on as a celebrity ambassador for one of the many organizations working towards prison and sentencing reform, or The Innocence Project, something like that. Well… she might. It turns out that Kim went to visit a women’s prison on Friday.

Kim Kardashian West met one-on-one with several prisoners to discuss what it’s like being locked up … and their concerns about going back into the real world. Sources close to the situation tell TMZ … Kim arrived at the California Institution for Women in Corona Friday afternoon with a few bodyguards and first toured the grounds and living quarters.

Then, she met with 15 women to get a picture of what their day-to-day lives are like behind bars, how they feel about it … and what their hopes, plans and anxieties are once they are released. We’re told Kim was there for several hours, and her trip is part of her mission to create a program for women to help them adjust to real life once they get out of prison.

As you know … Kim was vital in the release of imprisoned grandmother Alice Marie Johnson last month, and she’s clearly not done advocating for prison reform.

People hate on Kim for many good reasons, when she’s doing really dumb things. But can we ease up on her with this one? It’s good for her to get out of her superficial comfort zone, and you know what? If she puts her mind to it – which she might? – she could do some good. Reintegration into society is a HUGE issue, and it’s linked hand in hand with recidivism. If someone does get released from jail, the chances are very high that they will go back to jail if they aren’t capable of reintegrating into society. If Kim does create and fund a program to help women specifically, it will be a great thing. I still believe that she’s capable of even more though: as I said, she has Ivanka’s number. She could just call in a list of women she wants pardoned, and see if Trump would do it.

She clearly knows her daya as the sex pot are numbered she needs a new angle. Not sincere at all.

If the E cameras were with her, then I’m really going to side eye her. You are right though, her nude selfies get zero attention now. She did need a new angle, but at least this one might actually help people. I just would love it if someone actually interviewed her and asked her questions about prison reform and rehabilitation to see what she actually knows. I studied this subject in University for four years and there’s a lot to learn.

Agree. I don’t trust this move at all. She is up to something and while it may be veiled in goodwill, this is totally strategic on her part. p.s. I grew up in Corona and had no idea there was a womens jail there!

I would be a lot more interested if she aligned herself with organizations that are already doing this work. Kim does not have the training or expertise to lead this cause. She could definitely use her platform to get attention – but leave the real work to the experts. We don’t need Kim’s privileged opinions and feelings making decisions.

Also – she’s doing her beset Meghan Markle impression now.

      • Shannon says:

^^ This. I’d be much more impressed if she were doing this with an organization ALREADY working toward this end and NOT making it a one-woman-show. And her affiliation with Trump just creeps me out, sorry not sorry. It’s like they’ve established some kind of symbiotic relationship – he makes her look good, she makes him look good. Ew.

  2. Swack says:

Good for her but does she really know what life on the outside will be for these women? She still lives in a bubble and if she is going to work on a program to help women adjust to real life, I hope she is doing it with someone that has experience in this area (and not Ivanka and Jared who live in a similar bubble).

  3. Pandy says:

As first poster commented, she’s no longer a sex kitten so this is just a reinvention for publicity. She named her kid Saint – she doesn’t need to pretend lol.

  4. Abby says:

Can’t stand the Kardashians but I have to give props for caring about prison reform. Truly. If all she does is raise awareness, that’s better than anything else she’s done in this life. This is such an important issue.

    Keep on, Kim.

  5. Astrid says:

Speaking from limited personal experience, unless she hands out $1000 bills or gives jobs to the newly released, not much is going to help. In Michigan where I live, there is so much court ordered fees and fines and requirements that need to be paid and done once released. However, it’s nearly impossible to get a job with a record. Which doesn’t leave many options.

It’s hilarious to me anyone would fall for this as nothing more than PR. Kanye said it in his song she called him worried about her brand and money. I believe that. Doesn’t matter what she does, her motives are always about money and herself. No one would have known she went unless she ran to TMZ.

Also, I kept wondering why Alice Johnson was denied by Obama’s pardon committee so I looked it up. She was behind the movement of 3,000 pounds of cocaine. I just saw a story where they busted a 12,000 pound cocaine movement and they said that was worth over $200 million so I guess 3,000 pounds would be worth about $50 million. I’m not saying life in prison was appropriate anyway (twenty plus years was more than enough and I have no idea what a normal sentence for that amount of drugs would or should be) but this was a major operation which is why I think she was denied previously. I think Trump commuted because Obama wouldn’t more than because Kim was involved. She was just used for the photo. I wonder if she or Kanye would campaign for him now. Does she owe him for doing this on her behalf? Or better question is, does HE believe she owes him in some way for this? I wouldn’t want to be her when he comes around for a return favor.

It’s good when someone makes a change to be a better person, but I just don’t know if I could believe anyone from that family because like Trump they are master manipulators.

    • Mira Belle says:

I am no fan of KK. At all. Is she media-manipulative? Probs in the tops, globally. But prison work, and kudos to those upthread to study/work in this sector, is no small thing. So I’m gonna hit pause on any judgement for the moment. I’ve never been inside one and of the zillion public works she or anyone could pick, this seems the…toughest.

I don’t like kim but I really don’t appreciate anyone saying her “hot” days are numbered because she’s in her mid 30s. Look at Kate Beckinsale. How sexist and ageist to assume her worth will decline with age. She will decline because she’s a bad person who never offered more to the world than selling herself out and greed. However I don’t like people using her age as ammo to drag her. It upsets me.It drags women in their late 30s and 40s too. It pretty much reinforces the idea that you aren’t *uckable anymore. We already get that crap from 50% of hollywood movies we see. 26 year old jlaw with old men as love interests etc. If you’re young & shouting out these internalised misogynistic views you’re only shooting your future self in the foot.

Yeah, she’s trying for a new angle and it isn’t sincere. Let’s not drag ageing women too though. Please? I expect a lot from the thoughtful, intelligent and compassionate commenters here. Not daily mail quality one-sided ageism comments towards women.
