Johnny Depp & his former managers came to terms on an out-of-court settlement

Johnny Depp arriving at the Hotel Eden

The conversation about Johnny Depp’s steep downward spiral started happening a few years back, when he was finalizing his divorce with Amber Heard and trying to cheap out on paying her. People thought it was weird that he was being so cheap, and people thought it was weird that Depp was suddenly selling off pieces of artwork because of cash flow problems. Soon we had the answer: Depp had blown through hundreds of millions of dollars over the past decade in particular.

Depp ended up suing his former business managers, and that’s when the real dirt started coming out, from Depp’s outrageous spending to his sister’s shadiness to weird loans being “floated” to cover his debts and more. His lawsuit against The Management Company was one of the reasons why he decided to sit down for that ghastly Rolling Stone piece too. Well, after years of back-and-forth in the press and more than a handful of lawyers dumping Depp, it seems like Depp and The Management Company have come to some kind of settlement.

About a month away from a trial that would have captivated the entertainment industry, Johnny Depp has settled his blockbuster lawsuit against his former business managers. The deal was made at a mediation session on Saturday, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Depp filed his $25 million fraud case against The Management Company at the beginning of 2017. He alleged being the victim of gross misconduct and that the firm run by Joel and Robert Mandell, which had represented him for 17 years, had failed to file or pay his taxes on time, failed to keep proper books, loaned money to third parties without authorization, and was self-dealing by investing his money in business ventures in which the firm’s partners had ownership stakes. Depp was looking to recover commissions. But that was only his side of the story.

According to the Mandels, who brought counterclaims, the firm repeatedly warned and advised Depp to reduce his spending and sell unnecessary assets. They charged Depp with living an “ultraextravagant lifestyle that knowingly cost Depp in excess of $2 million per month to maintain, which he simply could not afford.”

Depp’s alleged spending — $30,000 a month for wine, $500,000 in rental fees for storage warehouses that held his Hollywood collectibles, $200,000 for a private jet, and on and on — all became fodder in the lawsuit. The detailed spending also fueled many stories telling how he blew an estimated $650 million fortune. (Depp is also in the midst of a legal battle with his former transactional attorney, Jake Bloom.)

The trial was quickly advancing with an Aug. 15 date that the judge refused to move back any further. The mediation session represented the parties’ last shot at coming to a deal, and both sides were probably motivated to avoid any embarrassing secrets that would come out in open court. Then again, Depp and his lawyer recently told Rolling Stone that this lawsuit would change Hollywood forever. Instead, with no word on the terms of the settlement and dismissal papers forthcoming, it will end quietly if certainly memorably.

What do you think? I think it’s still pretty shady, don’t you? It was clear from the Rolling Stone piece that Depp really had no idea where his money was going on a regular basis, but that’s still not an excuse. I also think that his former managers were playing a little fast and loose… at times. But they did their due diligence for much of the past decade and they tried to get through to Depp, to no avail. What I’m saying is that I have no idea how they could settle this, because it seemed like a Gordian knot of wine, scarves and wasted millions.

My guess? They forgave his outstanding loan from them so as not to rack up a ton more legal fees. Highly doubt there was much, if any, payout.

Whatever, he’s still broke as hell and circling the drain.

  2. Jamie42 says:

He needs an intervention but, as with Elvis, there is no one left to do it and make it stick–and no guarantee that it would work, anyway. He is obviously a deeply ill substance abuser (of multiple substances) and is hitting bottom.

That top picture just makes me sad. I’m not a Depp fan; but this is really sad. Sometimes when you think you are in better financial shape than you are you make dumb decisions. AT this point he needs to sell as much as he can and just try to live a different life. he is 55 years old. It looks like all he wants to do is just play with his band. He doesn’t even look to like acting much outside of the money. He should just let it go and do what makes his heart happy. At this age he has earned it.

He should be in jail for assaulting his whive and various photographs throughout the years.

  4. Yawn says:

Me thinks he settled so that they wouldn’t air any more of his dirty laundry in court documents for the whole world to see…

“Gordian knot of wine, scarves and wasted millions” hahahah

Dear famous people: do what Oprah does – sign every cheque. Pay attention!

He needs to liquidate his assets. He has a yacht that worth I think $10 million, a French Chateau that was listed at close to $40 million and an island he paid $3 million for back in the day. I do not know the resale value of these items, but he can recoup some of the money. If he stops spending $30,000 a month on wine he’d be in better shape. Just my 2 cents.

  7. Ninks says:

You head $2m a month and think it’s crazy money (because it IS crazy money), but then when you look at the breakdown of his spending, it seems like $2m a month is conservative.

I don’t understand where there’s any indication or evidence that the managers did anything wrong or “played fast and loose.” Depp’s alleging it does not give me any reason to believe the managers were shady.

I figure that settling is ultimately cheaper than a protracted court battle.

    • dota says:

They knew he was a drunken drug addicted mess and even stated that in court documents. How can they make legally binding loans and contracts with someone who they know is under the influence of multiple drugs? His management was in the wrong and took advantage of him. Depp deserved it but that does not get you an out in court.

      • sa says:

Knowing that somebody is a drunk does not automatically translate to they took advantage of him.

  9. Fanny says:

Rolling Stone tried their best to be fair and tell both sides, but the best they could come up with was that one of the small-scale investments TMG arranged for Johnny was in a company they had a personal stake in and it didn’t yield huge dividends, nor did it lose anything. And per TMG they had fully disclosed their connections to the company to Johnny and he approved the investment. So that’s nothing basically.

Everyone always settles right before trial, no matter how complicated the issues.

  11. So says:

So this was the case that would change hollywood forever, that Johnny debt alleged that he had all evidence and proves that he was the poor lost boy victim but just settled like all the process before, and his crazy fans are saying it is a win for him.
Really they can change the tune and falsehoods from any logic to defend him

  12. JRenee says:

Incredible spending, does he support his children financially or did Vanessa get a lump sum payment for the kids? Incredible!!!

    • JaneFr says:

You forget that she’s got her own money and does not need him to live comfortably or support her children. In fact she’s quite wealthy – not deep wealthy – but still. She is a famous singer and actress in France and is doing well with her investments. In 2018 her fortune is estimated around 275 millions euro.
He may have been the big international star, but she never was a nobody.

  13. Sara says:

I am 40 and Depp was the one for me growing up that I loved the most. Loved Leo too but Depp was always my favorite. This picture makes me incrediblely sad. I can’t believe someone doesn’t have an intervention. His ex Vanessa needs to stage one and fast. The children need their father around. This doesn’t need to end in tragedy. Get help Jonny
