Doesn’t it seem weird that there’s a big charity polo match in the middle of a Thursday? Maybe I’m just a peasant, but I thought polo was for the weekend?? Cue the Dowager Countess quipping, “What is a weekend?” Today, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex attended a polo match at the Royal Berkshire. The polo was a charity fundraiser – ?? – for Sentebale, which is one of Harry’s big charities. Sentebale is the one Harry started years and years ago to support AIDS work in Lesotho and help kids.
For this event, Meghan went for a dark color, which is a consistent thing with her. I don’t mind that she wears black and navy a lot of the time – those are my favorite colors too – but I just wish that she would mix it up a little for daytime events. Save the black and navy for evening stuff. Meghan’s dress is Carolina Herrera, and I’ve convinced myself that the material is stiff denim. It’s pretty but… is this really a daytime summer look for an outdoor event? I don’t know, I’m really asking. If the fabric was different (something light and floral?), I would love this. The silhouette is great and retro, and it suits her figure. Love her bun/chignon too.

Its not linen, linen would wrinkle. This is cotton and it looks lovely. It’s polo match, why are people saying negative stuff? She cannot wear haute couture to polo.

I have wide leg denim -linen blend pants. They don’t wrinkle badly , hold their shape well and they are about the same shade.

The dress is really cute, it just doesn’t look that great on MM. Unfortunatley MM just does nothing for all the designer clothes she wears. She has the weirdest body shape.
Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder because I think she looks lovely. She actually elevates what to me usually looks like simple outfits or silhouettes.
Nothing particularly weird – she just doesn’t have the waist (or rather, the waist/hip ratio) to wear the kind of belts she’s been using.
I also don’t think that navy/dark blue suits her complexion, but then I have a strong dislike for navy/dark blue in general.
I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how her body shape can be considered weird AT ALL.
I’m a fan of Carolina Herrera’s and I think this dress is cute. I think it’s great for this event. The one thing, though, is that the belt is the wrong size for her. Sure, belts are supposed to be adjustable but the post should fit into the middle ring or the next size smaller for a proper fit.
I’m sure I’ve pissed off a lot of stores by switching belts on dresses (in secret) before purchasing them.

Agreed. Perfect silhouette, put in a lighter fabric, or even color, would be better for a daytime event. I liked Kate’s recent polo outfits from Zara, cute, cool for the heat. While I *love* Meg, it’s almost like she’s dressing for the “part of princess at polo” a la Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.

If you look closely it’s a cotton dress, not denim. The material just has the appearance of denim until you really look at it. I’m wearing a light blue cotton shirt right now that has the same stitching.

I had a similar dress from ModCloth a few years ago, and it was so adorable. It was denim, not printed cotton, but a very fine weave so it was actually cool enough that I wore it yearly for Independence Day festivities even though it is over 100 degrees in summer here. I LOVED that dress, and I love hers, but I don’t like the pinching in the armpits, either. I will say, however, that at least it bloody fits her, unlike That Dress I Can’t Bear To Look At Up Close. You know the one. *scowl*

oh this is super cute, casual and pretty. I actually have a dress that so similar and the silhouette looks great on a variety of body shapes. While it’s not my style, I am digging her simple, no fuss approach to styling.

Honestly, this is the first time I read people complaining about denim in whatever weather, now I get why this is CBers, LOL. AFAIC, denim can be worn anytime. Meghan looks fabulous from head to toe. I was gonna post before I saw the vid clip, thankfully I didn’t as pictures give a much different picture than when you watch a video. The only thing I would have changed would be the shoes, maybe flat shoes as opposed to heels. But it looks like they’re walking some sort of “red carpet” so maybe this warranted heels, not sure. But Meghan looks gorgeous and personally, this is a dress I would wear, any time, any day, anywhere.

Man, I live in Canada. On the coastline. In a province that doesn’t get nearly as hot as some others do this time of year. I wear denim to the (casual) office I work at. When I left the car the other day after driving home from work I felt like my legs were on fire. So I mean – I’m wearing denim comfortably in airconditioning – but I would have been miserable being outside.

Yes! I’m a Suits fan and agree that she always looked great there. I wish that the Suits stylist could fly over a 2 or 3 times a year, go shopping for Meghan and whip her closet into shape. Having said that, I love this dress. She is buying some very classic looks, and I can easily see this dress repeated in 5 or 10 years, perhaps with the pearls or brooches that she will no doubt have.
Or even a great scarf belt in complimentary colors. I just bought a huge scarf (navy, red, tan, white, yellow, deep pink, lavender, and green in the print) to fold and use instead of a regular belt for jeans and some tan and navy linen pants I have. It looks really cute, and is definitely a nice change up from a plain belt. Plus, it goes great with my red shoes (and now I have a reason to buy the cute green ones I’ve had my eyes on! hehehe 😊)
Said scarf also looks GREAT tied triangularly around the neck, draping in front!

I think she was simply younger in Suits. We can’t stay young things forever. She is a perfectly beautiful, healthy woman now but older.

This dress is not the most expensive outfit she’s worn, but this would’ve been a perfect opportunity for her to wear a high street brand, something less expensive. I know she’s going to be criticized no matter what, but this would’ve been a good chance to show that she doesn’t only wear these expensive brands.

I remember having several different dark denim outfits…a one piece farmer’s overall. And then I had a knee length denim jumper dress. And, if you can believe it, a floor length (!) denim jumper. I wore that to a Christmas party with a blouse and the ever-present 70s short silk scarf, tied sideways around my neck. I thought I was the height of fashion.
I will say that 70s fashion looks better than 80s fashion in retrospect.

70s are one among most important decades for fashion music, movies… The silhouette is 50s, but i love that 70s vibe, it is in now and it will be in again in 10 yrs. You cannot escape that decade, it was freedom of expression in every art form
Milla —There were definitely beautiful clothes, like Halston, etc. and I generally prefer the sleeker silhouette of the 70s to, say, the puffy/prairie 80s silhouette. But there were many, many butt ugly clothes too. Orange and brown and neon clothes, wide white belts on men, platform shoes, gaudy polyester shirts, polyester everything, gigantic lapels and ties. We were married in 1978 and looking at some of the pictures… luckily my dress was simple and straight, with a sweetheart neckline, sheer long sleeves. You could wear it today. The men’s tuxes weren’t bad either, beige, and my bridesmaids wore simple long sleeveless wrap dresses that tied at the waist. They looked great! But some of the guests, hoo boy, were they dressed badly. My brother had a huge permed Afro (we’re white), a corduroy suit with enormous lapels, and big platform shoes. And the miles of sideburns.
It’s fun looking back.
70s chic was great. 70s day to day regular folk clothing and styling was something else altogether. One of my favorite photos of my grandmother is from the seventies. She had on a white pajama like pantsuit and these huge sunglasses. Her hair was in a sleek knot. Her jewelry was on point. The woman was killing it in the 70s. She’s always been a clotheshorse but that one photo is one of my favorites. Old pictures of her never look dated.
Flash to my cousin’s bar mitvah circa 76 and I will only say Jewfros were on full display. I spied some unfortunate frosty eyeshadows in the group pictures.

How do you know she has received anything free? As far as we know, Prince Charles foots the bill for all engagements. I would wear this in a heartbeat. That dress is gorgeous. I havent been disappointed in her style at all. With the exception of the pink Trooping two piece and the Ascot dress I’ve loved everything she’s worn so far.
It looks to be a chambray dress, I’ve always thought chambray was a perfectly summery fabric. I do wish this had been in a pretty floral print bough. I love Delphine’s dress, and Delphine is such a pretty name too.

I totally agree. I work in the City and am currently wearing flip flops in the office. My law firm has instituted a casual dress policy due to the heat. I would not want to be wearing closed toe shoes let alone heels. And stiletto heels are totally inappropriate for grass.

You know, I think Kate got ahead of the game with her cheap high street outfits. She knows the public like to see high street clothes on celebs, and her wearing them as a Royal makes her seem down to earth and normal/regular. ” Look, she wears Zara, how great of her to not spend so much taxpayer money!” Lol. This is exactly what Royal families should be showing to the public. I think Meghan might be missing the mark slightly. Both of their clothes are expensive, but if MM continues with the really expensive outfits for each occasion, the criticism will start flowing even more and no one will be able to say it’s not justified. Kate knows she can wear her jewels and other pricey stuff in private, but for certain public events, throwing in high street/mid-range labels is a win.

Sigh. Yet again, expensive (non-British) designer dress doesn’t fit properly up top, loads of cloth, dark heavy material on a very hot summer day in the country, and shoes that look odd with the dress, and other ladies dressed very differently.
I don’t dislike the idea of the line of the dress on her, but this dress cost about $3,000. It seems to me that the pretty green flowered dress with the frilled neckline that she wore to the Stephen Lawrence memorial in the spring would have been perfect here – it makes me feel overheated just looking at all that heavy dark cloth on a dreadfully hot July day in the country (I saw in the DM the record temps in Britain and across Europe, but we won’t mention global warming, clearly it’s a hoax, right? Right?).
@Violet, no one really knows the cost of their clothes, not even Kate’s. And even if its 3000 quid, don’t they all wear dresses in the same price range? All of them starting from HM to Sophie of Wessex, their outfits are super expensive, aren’t they? Personally I believe if they all get discounts on everything, cars, groceries etc, chances are 100% they get huge discounts on clothes. Wailing about the cost of their outfits is futile.
My point about the cost was that, as with many of her outfits, it doesn’t fit properly – at that price, it should fit beautifully. This seems to happen frequently with her, as the gray Givenchy dress in Dublin where you could see the entire outline of her strapless bra under the too tight and wrinkled top.
And as I said once, I don’t think the public expects her to come out in stuff from TJ Maxx (much as I love the store!), but I do think at these prices they expect her to support British fashion. Listen, I’m not British, maybe I’m wrong and they don’t care, I’ll take advice from British posters on that. But most of Kate’s clothes are British, she wears foreign design labels very infrequently.
I’m not wailing at all – I’m not the British public, I’m just pointing something out that I figured was a given. But as I say, I could be wrong and maybe really no one cares.

@Bliss 51 – our poor dogs are really having a hard time. They are both old, and while inside they are reasonably comfortable, walking them is getting less and less advisable, and so they’re bored, as well.
The map of Britain in the DM was really scary. I’ve only been to England twice, and it was summer, but it was just lovely, much cooler than New York City. But that was more than a decade ago.
I’m always stunned at people who think they don’t have to worry about the effects of global warming for another 100 years or so. Like, kids, it’s here and it’s now.

“Amateurs”?? geez it’s not a competition. It’s hot in the UK by UK standards. You don’t win an award for living in a hotter climate, in fact an area with those temperatures is sooner to become inhospitable due to climate change anyway. Nothing to brag about. besides, living somewhere that hot means you are far more prepared, likely with central air or A/C, than the UK or Europe are for heat waves. Remember that Italian heat wave years ago that killed a bunch of seniors? were they “amateurs” too??

Lovely, very retro. The fabric (denim? cotton mix?) does look a little heavy for the current weather but Meghan clearly wouldn’t be wearing it if she weren’t comfortable in it. People’s tolerance for heat varies so much and what’s hellish for those of us unused to this type of heat/humidity in the UK may just be a normal summer’s day for her.
Mid 30s is normal summer weather for most of North America along with a lot of humidity. It is why AC is the norm here. This is unusually hot weather for the UK but not for Toronto or California.

So many posts saying it’s way too hot for that dress, it’s too stiff, it’s too heavy, it’s too this, it’s too that, not realising that they’re projecting their own heat exhaustion onto Meghan.

It is a lightweight denim fabric from a resort collection which means it was meant for this season and warm weather. The color is navy but the fabric isn’t heavy.
The denim makes it a daytime dress and not something I would wear at night. Maybe for a casual dinner because it isn’t formal but nothing beyond that.
She looks pretty and I like the whole outfit. I would change the shoes but it is a minor complaint.

She has lost a scary amount of weight. In that first photo the bones on her chest are casting a shadow and her legs are reaching Angelina Jolie skinny stage. There is no reason a healthy 36yo woman should look like AJ who has had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, went through a cancer scare and gave birth to multiple children.
I went through her older photos from even just a couple of years ago and she had lovely well shaped legs and looked very healthy. Is there a Starve-the-new-bride rule in the royal family I don’t know about? Kate had visible bones on her chest in her wedding dress photos too, I couldn’t look at her dress without being distracted.
I’ve seen MM older pics, and even in the fairly recent ones from a few years back, she wasn’t naturally small framed. Her legs, thighs, arms, etc were fuller. She has lost a lot of weight.. but she was an actress so maybe she felt the pressure. Hopefully, she doesn’t go down the Kate route. She also had a fuller figure and dieted herself to where she is now.
Meanwhile no one’s harping on the fact Harry is wearing jeans? Meghan’s denim dress may not be as heavy as it appears. I used to own a chambray/denim skirt for summer and it was one of the lightest, airiest skirts I owned.
This reminds me of when Meghan wore olive to Prince Louis’s christening and everyone proclaimed olive was only a “fall color” and could not be worn at other times of the year. Meanwhile I see olive all the time on summer clothes–t-shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, and I’m like where are these people from??
With the christening, there seemed to be a white and light blue colour palette – the clothes and background were carefully selected. For Harry’s wedding photos there was a carefully selected green colour palette going on. MM in the olive felt a bit too heavy for a summer christening. The Oscar de la Renta dress (if tailored properly) would have been perfect for that event.
Olive was a fine, neutral choice for the christening. If she’d shown up in the blue and white pattern, she would have been accused of attention grabbing.
I think she looks lovely, but I don’t really like the denim look.
I wonder if TM has become a bit more circumspect now that ‘sources’ finally turned on him. I’d be great if it lasts, but I agree with you and love how you phrased it as the calm before the sh-tstorm.

Do you know if Henry & Tom Branson (Matthew Goode/Allen Leech) will be in it? I know Goode is filming a kids movie in Ireland this month. Does Downton start filming in early Sept??
BBC and ITV banned the Markles from appearing on their celebrities show, fear of losing access to the Royal Family, due to any embarrassment Markles may cause the family.
Let’s hope Vonnie did not make too many plans for that six figure salary she was suppose to receive.
She is going to all over Meghan for losing this paycheck, after trying to act so coy, about appearing on Big Brother.
Now if The Sun, would stop paying Thomas for future interviews, all the Markles would crawl back under their rocks.

The dress is amazing. The armpits are FINE. They are supposed to be creased. There are creases all over the top. It’s adorable. Harry is wearing PANTS AND A JACKET!! I cannot believe all the posters complaining the dress is too hot. lol. Meghan looks VERY cool.
