Claire Foy wins in Calvin Klein at the Emmys: simple, classic and… regal?

70th Emmy Awards (2018) Press Room

As I said in the Open Post, I came into the Emmys believing with all my heart that Emmy voters are a lot like Oscar voters, in that they friggin’ love stuffy British stuff. If an Oscar voter encounters any film about posh British folks, they immediately start throwing awards at it. Same with the Emmys. How many Emmys did Downton Abbey rack up? I lost count. And honestly, The Crown is a MUCH better show than Downton, let’s be real. But in the end, The Crown didn’t take home Outstanding Drama (it lost to Game of Thrones). Claire Foy won Best Actress and Stephen Daldry (who didn’t come) won for Outstanding Director for one of the episodes. Both Matt Smith and Vanessa Kirby lost out too. So, basically, only THE QUEEN won.

At this point, I’ve gotten so used to seeing Matt Smith and Claire Foy walk red carpets together that I sometimes forget that they’re not actually together. Foy is married getting a divorce and Matt is with Lily James, but she and Matt attend all of these red carpet events together. He seemed genuinely pleased for her too, and she made special mention of him in her speech. Her dress is Calvin Klein by Appointment. It’s a regal look, I think. I like the simplicity of the silhouette – although there was some interesting stuff in the back of the dress – and I like that Claire mostly sticks to creams and navys and blacks for the big events. She plays it safe, which isn’t a crime.

Vanessa Kirby plays Princess Margaret and she’s a fan-favorite, and she’s also getting a lot of attention from the show. She’s already being cast in tons of other stuff, and she’s getting a lot of attention from designers too. It’s interesting that Tom Ford – who usually makes a point of only dressing one woman per awards show – chose Vanessa to dress for the Emmys. Even though it’s TOM FORD and we should be like “omg Tom Ford can do no wrong,” I’m not wild about this dress. It’s okay. I wish there was more consistency with the fabrics used.

Vanessa’s dress looks like she went out in public in just her Spanx slip

    • Enormous Coat says:

That’s the first thing I thought – and the color, so blah. Not working for me. I’m getting a ‘Sexy Cindy Lou Hoo’ Halloween costume vibe.

    • Chrissy says:

+1. Like she was so focused on her hair that she forgot her dress. Flesh tone dresses make no sense to me.

      • outoftheshadows says:

I think the moire boobs are the worst part. is that just my computer? Because when I scrolled down, they looked the same.

  2. Kay says:

Isn’t Claire Foy divorced or separated from her husband?

Not that it would matter, I really can’t imagine her and Matt Smith dating in real life. They seem like very different people to me, great friends but nothing romantic. She seems older than him, not in years or looks, but in maturity.

    • Jess says:

I think Matt Smith is dating Lily James? Or was at least?

Claire always looks so lovely and put together, very regal indeed!

Vanessa is a ridiculously beautiful woman and whoever put her in that monstrosity of a dress should be fired! Lol

  3. minx says:

I like Claire’s dress but her lipstick is just too bold for her coloring.
Why would Vanessa wear such a thing?

    • Kay says:

Because Tom Ford made it. I think he’s the kind of designer you just don’t argue with – if he chooses to dress you out of everyone, you just thank your lucky stars and wear the dress. It’s a career thing more than a sartorial moment. Being chosen by Ford means you’ve made it.

    • L84Tea says:

I’m in the opposite camp. I think Claire Foy can rock a red lip like no other. Taylor Swift wishes she looked that good with a red lip.

  4. JAC says:

Claire is so so pretty, but that makeup is way too harsh for her coloring.

  5. Christina says:

I liked Downton Abbey better. The Crown is good too though.

  6. Chrissy says:

I think Clare’s dress is a bit short. Not sure we should be seeing all of her shoes. Otherwise it’s gorgeous. Love The Crown although Matt slightly creeps me out for some reason. LOL

  7. Lucy2 says:

That Tom Ford dress looks like an unflattering undergarment.

I had no idea Matt was dating lily James! That seems like an odd couple to me, but who knows.

I was rooting for Sandra or Keri. 🙁

  8. Lumbina says:

I hate her dress – when I first saw it I thought she forfot to put the straps over her shohlders and they were hanging down the sides. The length also makes her feet look massive.

    Beautiful woman though!

    • Josephine says:

I don’t get the length at all. It makes her boxy. I assume it’s a dress that looks better in person given that it’s all about the fabric, but that length looks like they altered it for someone else.

  9. Nev says:

    Downton was better.

  10. Dee Kay says:

Does anyone else think that Vanessa Kirby is sort of taking Natalie Dormer’s career? As an actress and in her look, attitude, presence, Kirby reminds me so much of Dormer. But Kirby is younger, and I know that is the secret magic trick that allows newer actresses to ascend rapidly. I wonder if Dormer sees Kirby in stuff like that Mission Impossible Fallout role and thinks, That part could’ve been mine.

  11. stellalovejoydiver says:

IMO, both dresses are extremly unflattering

  12. Biting Panda says:

Tatiana Maslany should have won, Orphan Black is finished, and there will never be another performance like hers.

  13. Myrtle says:

Vanessa’s dress has the same problem as Laura Dern’s. We should have gotten a pic of them standing next to each other! Personally, I much prefer bras as an undergarment, not sewn on the outside of a blouse or gown. Too obvious an eye-catcher, and, dare I say ugly in this case. Even so, Vanessa is a knockout.

  14. Other Renee says:

I really dislike the two different shoes look Claire is wearing. It’s a “thing” I’m sure but I think it just looks ridiculous. Otherwise she looks lovely.
