Serena Williams calls Duchess Meghan’s wedding ‘such a monumental moment’

Royal wedding

I guess Serena Williams isn’t going to play any Asian tournaments, which disappoints me. I know she wants to concentrate on the Slams, but I was sort of hoping that she would play a couple of the bigger tournaments this fall, especially the big one in Beijing. Alas, I think Serena shut down her season after the US Open. Which I understand too – that final was brutal to watch, so I can only imagine how brutal it was to experience. Plus, Serena has a lot of other stuff on her plate. Serena sat down with The Project (and Australian program) for an interview just after the US Open. The interview made headlines because Serena was deemed “tense,” but she also made headlines because she talked about her friendship with the Duchess of Sussex. The Queen and the Duchess – I love them.

During an interview with The Project, Serena Williams opened up about how much of a positive force the Duchess of Sussex has been in her life, and vice versa. “We were actually just texting each other this morning,” the Grand Slam champion said.

“We have known each other for a long time,” the champion said to The Project’s Lisa Wilkinson. “We really are relying on each other a lot lately.”

Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, attended Markle’s May 19 royal wedding to Prince Harry, and Williams called the ceremony a “monumental day for African Americans.”

“To have such a monumental moment in England, nonetheless of all the places, I felt like we were literally watching history. I feel like in a few years we are going to look back at that moment and it’s going to be so historic. It’s going to be something that people never forget. The whole service was really wonderful, and most of all I just wanted to see my friend be happy. And I think that’s what happened.”

I like what she says. Meghan’s wedding was a big moment, a historical moment, one of those moments that just feels like everything is changing for the better. And I love that Serena and Meghan are still texting. Why would Meghan need Harry’s stuffy aristocrat friends again? She texts Queen Serena.

Here’s the interview – she talks about the US Open too.

Yeah that article about “boo hoo, the friendless liberal duchess” kind of forgot that Meghan has been on her own for years and the people she invited for her wedding. She’ll be fine.

Why was it a monumental day for African Americans?
Serena’s achievements are monumental for African Americans, for women, for poc, for woc. But what about marrying into the British Royal family is an achievement?

There was a Black Minister from Chicago PREACHING in front of the Queen of England…yea, it WAS momentous….

      • Gem says:

@lala are you going to explain to me why marrying into this family is an achievement?
I think Meghan has many achievements, and doing good with the position she is in now will also be positive achievement. But why is her marrying into the family considered an achievement?

I just want to say, good on her for doing that interview at a tough time. Lisa Wilkinson did a great job interviewing her with the respect she deserves whilst also covering the tough subjects.
