Hilary Duff, 9 months pregnant, tells paparazzo to quit following her

I owe Hilary Duff an apology. I like Hilary, but I’ve always assumed that she called the paps on herself because we have so many photos of her doing every day activities. After her encounter with a paparazzo this weekend, maybe I’ve been wrong this whole time. As we know, Hilary is very pregnant with her second child, a girl, with boyfriend Matthew Koma. According to a video Hilary filmed and posted to her Instagram, this particular paparazzo followed her all morning and would not let her alone, to the point that it made Hilary uncomfortable. Not only did he show up at her son Luca’s soccer game, he followed to her sister Haylie’s houses, who also has small children. She asked him to leave her alone, but he refused and continued to follow her throughout the day. And when she told him she was pregnant, sick and uncomfortable with his constant presence, he put it back on her, telling her he’d wasted his morning and hadn’t gotten any pictures:

I’ll admit, I used to be one of those people who would occasionally use the “that’s what you signed up for” argument but that was before I had any idea how relentless some of these paps can be. Hilary’s right, no one deserves this, “every day of every month.” And add to that, she’s sick AND nine months pregnant. Christ, I didn’t want my husband around me when I was that pregnant, let alone some creepy photographer. This is gross and the photographer’s beady-eyed glare he has trained on Hilary as she asks him to back off gives me chills. You can hear the fear in her voice – she’s trying to be firm, but it’s obvious she’s pretty rattled. This is yet another frightening example of a person who refuses to accept that No Means No. I’d hate for Hilary to have to hire security to be around her full time because of this kind of behavior but I wouldn’t blame her if she did. She’ll soon have two kids to worry about and if these guys are getting worse, I’m sure she’ll do whatever she needs to do.

    Up the Duff.

    Yes. I went there.

I feel really bad for celebs when the paparazzi follow them around, basically stalking, and they are almost never nice, just screaming horrible things on get peoples attention. Just because someone is famous, I don’t think people should follow, and harass them. I’ve run into a few celebs in the past few years, I actually walked past Stephen king one day, and I’m the hugest fan, but I assumed he was on vacation(I live in a small, touristy place). I smiled at him but never spoke to him.

I have run into celebrities as well ( coffee shop, shopping, walking down the street, etc) . I may take a second look but I would never bother them like the paparazzi do. They are not working ie: movie premiere , so they are deserve to be left alone and enjoy their down time.
The way some paparazzi behave is just disgusting . Also children of celebrities should be off limits.

I think that if Paparazzi wants to hang out outside of popular celebrity hot spot and celebrities know that if they go there they’re going to have Paparazzi shots, that’s fine. But the constant following them around, or their kids around, and shouting at them mean things to get a reaction really needs to stop because it really is stalking and harassment and I don’t know how we’ve decided it’s okay.

      • Betsy says:

Yes, hot restaurants seems fair game. Frankly that’s about all the paparazzi shots I want to see of most celebs anyway.

    • Dietcokehead says:

Paraphrasing here, but Sienna Miller once said if a man follows you around all day he’s a stalker, but as soon as you put a camera in his hand, he’s professional paparazzi. That really changed my perspective on celebs getting papped. No one should be followed against their wishes and have their every move followed.

I feel for her and others – some of them exhibit behaviour of a stalker. I watched a programme about Jackie O and she had a pap (Ron Galella) who was basically a stalker and who would not leave her along regardless of how many times she sued him or called the police – years later he admitted that he was obsessed with her. His work is celebrated but people forget the human side to that work and the way he hounded people to get that ‘perfect’ shot that made him a LOT of money.

I feel like there’s a good chance that she has called the paps often in the past. I just don’t see Hilary freaking Duff as some sort of big ‘get’ for them. However – as soon as she’s saying “can you lay it off” they should be respecting that. If they want photos in the future, they need to suck it up and accept that creeping people out to that degree isn’t acceptable at all.

Calling the paps in the past doesn’t give them the right to stalk you later on – pregnant or not.

    • Crumbs says:

Agreed, and honestly bigger names call the paparazzi often too. Taylor Swift has a deal with them, and you can tell the Kardashians do too. It’s not just the smaller names. I bet this is rare for Hilary, hence why she’s probably so frightened.

      • Anon says:

I am sure some celebs call the paps when they have something to promote, so it isn’t completely a one way street. Equally, though, the “deal” is in part hoping to forstall obsessive horrible behaviour like this.

  5. Beth says:

I’d frustrated to always have people following me around and never have any privacy, but honestly, the paparazzi is nothing new, and it’s part of how celebrities stay in the news. It really is part of the job of being famous, not everything about it is enjoyable

    • Missy says:

It’s all fine and dandy to get a pic of a celebrity..but to follow them around all day long, everywhere they go and than be a complete jackass when they ask you to stop. There’s nothing normal about that. No matter how famous, they shouldn’t be allowed to stalk people.

    • lisa says:

Beth – I agree, it’s just part of the deal. He wasn’t touching her or blocking her path. He was just around. She’s at work 24/7…. I have had to deal with much worse behavior from people at my workplace, so I have no sympathy for her. Just put on headphones and ignore the paps. She’s like, “it’s Saturday”, as if she is allowed to have privacy on the weekends? Nope, sorry, lady.

  6. Lex says:

Who was it? Sienna Miller or Mischa Barton… they said a man pursues you
relentlessly all day and then pusues you down a dark alley at night but because he has a camera in his hand, it’s apparently okay? Whoever it was was about 19 at the time. NO. This is not okay. This is revolting and predatory behaviour. I don’t care what your b.s. invented job is. You cannot stalk women and then make them feel guilty about it you piece of absolute shiiiiiiiiiiiit

  7. Cee says:

Why can’t the police be involved? He’s trailing her, she can argue he is stalking her, too. Freelance photography does not include stalking in its job description.

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. I tend to think there’s nothing technically illegal about following someone all day but geez, that guy is creepy.

  8. Kerfuffle says:

Yes, Hilary has been calling paparazzi for years. It’s a part of her brand and her career uptick. It’s easy money and exposure. However, I’m betting she doesn’t call THIS one. Celebs are playing with Fire with this game. When you create a demand for yourself (and worse, pictures of your kids) it opens up to this kind of craziness, because the paparazzi ranks are totally unregulated. Literally any dude with a camera can be one. This must be scary to be pregnant and having someone follow you around like this.

    • abbi says:

Yea this is my take on it. I think it’s a game that celebrities need to figure out how to play with the paparazzi. Celebrities much more famous that Duff have hidden pregnancies and marriages. My guess is that she used to call the paps a lot in the past and that got out of her control. Not that she deserves this, more like she got in over her head.

  9. tealily says:

The gall of this guy to get on HER case about how he’s “wasted his whole morning.” Dude, go find someone else who actually wants to be photographed.

  10. meh says:

This guy is a real douche but what he’s doing isn’t made worse just because she’s pregnant. What he’s doing would be just as bad if he was doing it to a non-pregnant woman.

    • Betsy says:

It is kind of. When you’re pregnant and miserable it’s a whole nother layer of horrible on the stinking human condition.

  11. Yes Doubtful says:

He was being an ass. I don’t understand why she was followed in the first place – she’s not a huge star. Was he expecting her to give birth at the soccer game? I never understood why paps can’t be arrested for stalking or at least be told to “move along.”
