Joe Alwyn showed off his new wispy facial hair at the NYFF: love it or hate it?

New York Film 'The Favourite' Premiere

If I’m being completely honest, I do think that Joe Alwyn is an attractive guy. He’s tall and lanky, and I like that. He’s got beautiful hair and sad, soulful blue eyes, and he’s got the kind of look – which many British actors have – which works well for period films and costume dramas. I’m not saying he’s the new Colin Firth or anything, but he could be the next Joseph Fiennes. Now, that being said, his new facial hair is a TERRIBLE look, and that’s coming from someone who almost always likes a scruffy, furry dude. Joe has been clean-shaven for as long as we’ve paid attention to him, but he debuted some wispy beard-like facial hair at Friday night’s New York Film Festival premiere of The Favourite. That beard makes me sad.

Speaking of beards – I know, I’m an idiot! – Taylor Swift came out to quietly support her dude. Tay-Tay and Joe are super-private, as everyone knows because they can’t shut up about how private they are, so she didn’t walk the NYFF carpet with Joe at all. Instead, she seemed to slip into the screening, and then Joe and Tay were seen after the premiere as they held hands and presumably walked to their car or to the afterparty or something. Emma Stone was also at the premiere, and Emma and Taylor are friends too.

PS… Nicholas Hoult is still quite dishy, isn’t he? Mm.

Now he just looks like T-Swift in cheap Halloween drag.

    • Alissa says:

yeah, if you can’t grow a full beard then you really should stop trying to have facial hair. It’s not a good look, especially when you’re blond.

  2. Beth says:

He looks like a teenaged boy trying to look like an adult

    • Jessica says:

He really dosent look like a teenager he looks like a 20 something guy. He might be growing the beard not for personal reasons but for a part.

  3. Chaine says:

    Neckbeard! Yuck.

  4. Annie. says:

I like it! He looks slightly older haha.

Now I must say TS looks gorgeous in that dress. I liked her dress, her hair, those strappy sandals and the red lip. Very well done

  5. Jessica says:

Both him and nick look good.
He wasnt clean shaven in Toronto either. He had a bit of a stubble which i thought suited him.

  6. Millenial says:

Oh, I wish there were better photos of Taylor’s dress. I thought she looked nice.

Joe can do a good broody model face. Still have yet to see him act in anything, so I’m not sure if he’s all that talented.

  7. Ol' Missus says:

Ummm…what did he do (that I missed) that makes everyone be so mean to him?? My young adult sons have a very youthful look into their 20’s, and I fear what you’d all say about them.

    • Tia says:

I am puzzled by this too. He’s done nothing. Hardly given an interview so how can you really have strong feelings one way or another? The only explanation is that people are taking their dislike of swift out on him.

  8. Case says:

I think he looks much, much better with facial hair. His face didn’t have much…visual interest before.

  9. Tia says:

The swift thing is a turn off I get that but he’s good looking guy and a pretty talented actor, he’s smart to be more low key than her previous boyfriends so his career isn’t totally defined by her.
    How tall is Nicholas Hoult?

    • jammypants says:

Except his career is totally defined by her. He’s billed below unknown footman characters yet he walks the carpet and does high profile interviews. Let’s not kid ourselves.

      • Tia says:

you’re exaggerating, hes not just above NON speaking actors, he has smaller parts and I believe a couple of leads, which is pretty normal (you might say very good considering the amount of actors and how competitive it is) for someone who has only been an actor for a couple of years, And he’s done one high profile (1) interview since he got with Taylor. I also don’t remember him walking red carpets for other small parts . This movie has Emma stone, Rachel Weiz, Olivia Coleman and Nick Hoult I doubt his presence on the red carpet makes any difference.
If you think dating Taylor helps in getting movie parts then Tom Hiddleston should have gotten much more offers. If anything I think it harmed his career. I believe it helps with stuff like fashion campaigns but as an actor if you are a serious actors not so much. For musicians like Calvin and Harry styles well that’s quite another matter especially in styles case where they have a similar demographic in the teen market. I believe dating swift helped Harry and 1D break America to some extent.

He just has no charisma. Watching paint dry is more exciting than him.
Also this performative privacy they do is annoying as hell.

  11. elle says:

I guess his balls finally dropped.

  12. Meganbot2000 says:

Poor man. No matter what he does an actor, he’ll always be known first and foremost as Taylor Swift’s bought and purchased pet boyfriend.

    • Tia says:

Meh, all her other boyfriends are fine. Despite the fact that several of them had much more high profile talked about romances with her. It really depends on how good an actor he is and what kind of luck he has in his career. Swift isn’t that important to the average person that doesn’t follow gossip and isn’t 14 years old.

  13. Mona says:

Nothing against the guy as I don’t know him, but to any dude who cannot grow a proper beard, don’t ever try. My two brothers look the same gross like him, while my hubby grows enough beard for a village if he does not shave you can stuff a winter duvet after 3 weeks with his beard. Not that I tried so far. But anyways, you cannot grow a beard, don’t try as it always just looks like you shaved some other body parts and glued it not very successful on your Face, no matter if famous or not… And by the way, anyone up for a beard duvet? 100% vegan… Lol

  14. Sarah says:

    Yeah, no…

  15. Jenni says:

Like a 13 year old that got stretched

  16. Case says:

I’ve never seen him in anything and I’m sure he’s a fine actor, but I do find it somewhat…suspicious…that his career is taking off approx. two years after starting to date Taylor Swift. I’ve seen this guy in so many trailers recently. Maybe these projects have all been in the works for a long time, but it feels like yet another romance of hers that comes off as a business move. For her, she started dating him when he was an “unknown” and could pretend to want privacy with him without much interest from the public, all while changing up her image. And he has just the right amount of visibility and recognition from being with her to get a career boost.

I think she’s a generally good person and I wish her the best. And I don’t subscribe to the idea that all her relationships have been completely fake. But I can’t help but notice that every single one of her relationships has been mutually beneficial for those involved.

    • Dara says:

Let’s hope for his sake that his ability lives up to all the attention he is getting. Hollywood is littered with “the next big thing” that turned out to be anything but. I am really curious to see how much screen time he has in any of his upcoming movies. I would be surprised if it were more than a few minutes in each, yet he is getting the full leading man PR push. If he weren’t “Taylor Swift’s Boyfriend” would anyone care?

    • Jessica says:

I think you got it a bit wrong. He hasn’t been out of drama school for more than 3 years
He scored the lead in an Ang Lee movie which is a pretty big deal when he was in his final year in drama school, Long before he met Taylor.
His recent roles are mainly smaller parts but in European art and prestige projects. His part in this movie that he’s promoting isn’t a lead. So I wouldn’t say “ his career is taking off after Taylor”. Seems like he was on this trajectory which is working in prestige projects for some time. It’s not as if he suddenly is getting major roles in blockbusters.

  17. Em says:

Why is everyone dissing him ? I actually find him really handsome, much more so than someone like Calvin Harris,
And he defo doesn’t look like a teenager when you see him in motion.
