Sandra Oh was lovely, groundbreaking & super-earnest in Versace at the Globes

76th Golden Globe Awards

The 2019 Golden Globes were not good. In recent years, we’ve been spoiled with hosts like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and did I mention Tina Fey and Amy Poehler? Naming Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg seemed promising, and truly, it was an important hire: Sandra Oh has so much heat right now for Killing Eve, and it’s great to see an Asian woman take on that kind of highly visible role. But good lord, there were maybe TWO funny jokes in their opening monologue out of what was mostly terrible timing and too much earnestness. It was a weird vibe for the *start* of what is usually the most “fun” show of the year.

In addition to that, Sandra WON for Killing Eve and gave one of the cutest speeches, complete with cutaways to her proud parents:

Sandra became the first person to ever speak Korean or thank someone in Korean on stage at the Golden Globes. She’s also the first actress of Asian descent to win for a lead role in more than 40 years.

It was also nice to see Sandra really blow it out, fashion-wise, for the whole night. She was one of the first people on the red carpet, wearing a gorgeous off-white Versace and walking the carpet with her Killing Eve peeps (her costar, Jodie Comer, wore a strange Ralph & Russo gown). Then she changed into several other gowns throughout the night, all of which were gorgeous. So, a mixed bag, but mostly a good mixed bag. And as Sandra said in her very earnest sidenote in the opening, she only took the hosting gig to increase visibility.

I was just watching Killing Eve this weekend, and it is amazing. Love the actors, love that Phoebe Waller-Bridge exec produces and writes episodes.

Great binge watch if you’re ever home sick! I watched it the first few years and loved it.

If you like Sandra Oh and medical dramas give it a go. It’s pretty good and Sandra Oh is great on it.

Sandra Oh isn’t a generic “Asian” actress. She is a Canadian actress whose parents were Korean immigrants to Canada.

“Asia” is a big place (several billion people live in the general vicinity) and there are many strong and vibrant culture that get ‘disappeared’ under the blanket designation.

Thank you for pointing this out. Sometimes I forget all the countries that are in the Asian continent, and how vast & diverse those countries and cultures are.

Back in December, a young writer/comedian named Karen Chee posted a picture of herself on Twitter wearing a t-shirt that says, “It’s an honor just to be Asian. -Sandra Oh”. Karen included a request to help write for Sandra on the GGs, and – super surprised!!! – got the gig.

As mom to a Chinese-American son, I’m always looking for representation of our family, and particularly my child, in culture and media. (Watching Big Hero 6 was an incredibly moving experience for us.) The U.S. has a long way to go, but last night was a step forward for Asian/Korean-Canadian/American women and I’m super happy about that. The reason to celebrate is valid and your point still stands. Thanks again for the reminder.

A large portion of the middle east is asian too, and I don’t think people often think that way. Now I like Sandra Oh a lot, and actually find her pretty funny, but the jokes and timing for the hosts were just a bit off. Still she’s right it was nice to see an asian woman hosting. I think if they want to do something funny next year and still be more diverse than white man comic and they can’t get the gold standard of Fey/Poehler/ or add Maya Rudolph to that, go with either Awkwafina or Hasan Minhaj. They are younger and may make it a bit different. Still the globes are great cause they always seem a bit less male white toasty than the others.

Love Sandra Oh! She’s really neat. She is fantastic in Killing Eve, but also Jodie Comer is a shockingly great actress. Hope you cover both of them more!

I mean Sandra Oh is Korean-Canadian and I want to claim her as an honorary and honoured Commonwealth Citizen -I hate Empire and all that it entails, but Sandra Oh is flipping special and I stan.

the opening bit was kind of painful until sanda oh got serious – but i think she was just REALLY nervous and out of her comfort zone. after she talked about representation – she seemed to really relax and their presenting improved. she nailed that masturbation joke. i spit my tea.

my husband and i were watching and there was a moment when andy sandberg relaxed his face and he looked so crazy gorgeous and i was like “wow, i never noticed that he is super handsome” and my husband just said “totally. he’s a good looking dude” HA!

I wish there was a clearer transition from the “funny” part of the monologue to her “serious” part. She said something to the effect of “I’m not kidding,” but that fit into their vibe of jokes. You could hear people still laughing. Maybe a “okay now let’s get quiet, because this has got to be said.” I don’t know, it felt like this emotional climax got lost. It was warm and serious and heartfelt and I wish that transition was clearer sooner.

I was waiting for the punchline…I thought it was part of the skit at first. Yeah a better transition would have helped.

  13. Aerohead21 says:

I liked their opening monologue. It was definitely “rehearsed” but it was clean and fun. It wasn’t sloppy.

  14. Marty says:

So happy she won, and she looked great!

  15. me says:

They were playing it safe…because now a days one bad/tasteless joke and your career is ruined. I don’t blame them.

  16. Originaluna says:

I’m elated for her and screamed when i saw that she won. I love her. Love killing eve. Love Jodie Comer. That show is amazing.
Also. To the people nitpicking – yes she is canadian blabla so should they have ignored the fact that she IS of Korean descent because of where she was born? If you look her up you will see that she does a LOT for her Korean community but oh let’s forget that because Asia is a continent.
That’s like saying that i shouldn’t be happy for Lupita’s win a few years ago because although she was born in Kenya she’s actually been raised in Mexico and in the USA so she doesn’t count as African – we have 54 countries.
I mean some people just… Have to poop on other people’s parade. Alwaysssss. So exhausting.

  17. Alyse says:

I mean she’s good in Killing Eve, but Jodie Comer was brilliant. I know Sandra was the bigger star but I don’t know why Jodie isn’t getting more awards recognition.

  18. LeiDub says:

The best joke was the one about Aloha & Ghost In The Shell.
