Gemma Chan in Jason Wu at the Critics’ Choice Awards: amazing or overdone?

One of my favorite looks at the Golden Globes was Gemma Chan’s magnificent Valentino gown. Kaiser and I talked about it on the podcast, which should be out tomorrow! (I had no idea audio editing was so involved, but you can listen soon!) She similarly brought it to the Critics’ Choice Awards last night, where she wore a giant ballgown of a floral Jason Wu gown that looked absolutely striking on stage. On another actress this may not have worked but Gemma really pulls off these huge looks. One criticism is that I would have cut the giant ruffle at the top, but maybe the dress needs it because it’s such an exaggeration of a gown.

Crazy Rich Asians won for Best Comedy, and it was a joy to see it finally get recognized. The whole cast came on stage and producer Nina Jacobson accepted the award on everyone’s behalf. She gave a memorable speech saying that she’d been told by white men in Hollywood that they only wanted to see other white men on film and couldn’t relate to anyone else’s experiences.

Like Gemma, Constance Wu has been taking a lot of fashion risks this season, but last night she played it a bit safer. She was in a sparkling Rodarte gown with a deep v-neck and tiered flutter sleeves. This is gorgeous.

Here’s Awkwafina in Elisabetta Franchi. I love the color and fit of this and want to see her in more things. So far I’ve only seen her in CRA and Oceans 8 where she played such completely different characters. (If you haven’t seen Oceans 8 yet rent it! Same for CRA.)

I don’t have an ID on Michelle Yeoh’s fab crimson one sleeve gown. She wore a solid green dress to the globes in two different fabrics so it looks like her style is solid colors and it definitely works on her. The little floral poof on the sleeve works too. She’s wearing the emerald ring that her character had on for CRA, that’s her own ring, and she also has an interesting watch. She’s a representative for the watchmaker Richard Mille and wore a custom one of a kind Mille to the CRA premiere. (Apparently her partner is friends with the Mille.)

I think on anyone other than Gemma I might think it was overdone. But she just has such a natural elegance, and something about her presence is just so, I don’t know, dignified in a really understated way, that to me she can pull absolutely anything off. Nothing ever screams “look at me” or overwhelms her like might happen on another actress.

I agree. I like it, and I think it’s styled perfectly. The styling makes a big difference with this kind of dress.

    • ByTheSea says:

That is such a Zendaya type gown to me.

    • Esmom says:

Yes. If Gaga, for example, had attempted this look she would fall far short because she always looks overdone. Gemma’s style seems effortless.

I love everyone else’s look here, too. I am a sucker for a metallic gown so Awkwafina’s dress might be my favorite.

xdanix, I totally agree. She has this elegant aura that helps her carry it off. Other than that, she’s also absolutely striking! Michaelle, Constance, and Awkwafina look wonderful as well but I like how Emma did something unexpected.

Man alive, these women are absolutely stunning. Ageless beauties!!! I loved Awkwafina in CRA! She was brilliant and I’d love to see her in more roles

We watched it on the weekend, after booking a trip to Singapore & Malaysia a day earlier. I haven’t been for a few years so I have marked down all the places from the movie I want to visit! Can’t wait!

    They all look lovely.

Awkwafina’s is my favourite. That colour is fantastic on her.

  4. Lucy2 says:

I like all of these! They all look wonderful.

All of these ladies look great, Michelle’s dress is my favorite.

Michelle Yeoh is so regal – I love seeing her get so much attention with this role. “Crouching Tiger” is my favorite movie of hers – the last scene with her and Chow Yun Fat makes me sob every time I watch it.

The whole group are stunning. I absoluetly love Gemma’s gown. It’s a big print, and a big dress, but she pulls it off. I love CERTAIN florals, and this is one that I think is just wonderful.

I can’t take my eyes off of Awkwafina’s dress, though. That color is so striking and cool looking. I want something in that shade.

Constance Wu’s gown is perfection..just enough glitter and a terrific fit

Record scratch— you have a podcast??

      @ME – what me says.

But yeah, audio editing is pretty involved. I’ve done audio fics for fandom, and even with open source software and people helping you out, it’s still a steep learning curve. For every minute listened, that’s like, three minutes worth of editing done. Not to mention cleaning up the audio after you’re done with basic processes.

My god Gemma Chan is a beautiful woman!

  13. Murphy says:

They all looked fabulous but in general Gemma Chan is absolutely flawless.

  14. Aren says:

They all look like absolute perfection. Something about their styling makes it seem very elegant and minimalistic.
It also helps that they’re all very beautiful.
