Cardi B on the shutdown: ‘Our country is in a hellhole right now, all for a wall’

Fashion Nova x Cardi B Collaboration Launch Event

Last night, Cardi B dropped two new projects. One was the “Twerk” video, which is, as they say, NSFW. It’s a lot of butts and they are twerking, which is just good branding. Her second project is the one that interests me. In the year 2019, let’s all accept that Cardi B is the political commentator we need. Cardi is no stranger to political commentary – last year, she made a video about taxes. This week, she’s making Instagram videos about the Trump shutdown and how so many federal workers are being recalled to work without pay. This is NSFW for language, but there’s some poetry to the way she says it:

Cardi says she’s scared about the shutdown and “This is serious. Our country is in a hellhole right now. All for a … wall.” She says to Trump: “You promised these f—ing racist rednecks that you was gonna build the wall, but you know that was impossible. But they voted for you and you promised them this sh-t so now you have to do it.” Cardi’s comments went viral, and she was trending on Twitter for a while (because of the “Twerk” video too, let’s be honest). Cardi had congressmen and senators debating publicly about whether they would share or retweet the video. She had political operatives on the hook too – as it turns out, loving Cardi is pretty universal.

When rappers care more about the govt than the senate majority leader #wheresmitch

    • Lightpurple says:

I spent an hour last night calling the offices of Republican Senators and leaving messages demanding that they either force him to do his job and allow floor votes on opening the government and veto-override, or remove him from the leadership position. I see absolutely nothing in our Constitution that allows two men to hold us all hostage while one placates the other. McConnell can end this today by allowing the vote or stepping aside.

Nosferatu Ghouliani not only moved the goalposts on “collusion,” but changed them to wickets and sent them to the UK.

Either Emperor Zero was in cahoots with the “colluders” or Ghouliani’s claim EZ didn’t know about it makes the *president incompetent and unable to hold any office.

Get yer popcorn…Emperor Zero has been silent for 23+ hours on the twitter machine.

I love the smell of indictments in the morning!

    Yep! Co-sign.

  5. Alissa says:

I honestly really like her. I do feel that she says what she truly feels, and I appreciate that. plus her video was totally on point! there’s a major difference between shutting down for healthcare and shutting down for a goddamn wall.

    • vanna says:

Me too! She is so entertaining and seems relatable and just like herself. Can’t help but keep watching her and listening to her poetic ways to describe stuff.

    • manda says:

I love her! I think she’d be so fun to talk to

    • Kitten says:

I like her, too. I think she actually DOES care about shit bigger than herself. Can’t say that about every pop star…or I guess rap star.

      • Dani says:

I agree. I think she cares because she was part of us regular folk just a few years ago. She didn’t grow up privileged AT ALL and she didn’t have half of what she had just 3 years ago. Good for her for using her voice.

    • BlueSky says:

When she said that Obama shut down the government for healthcare so that you b@tches would be able to get your p@ssies checked…… 💀💀💀😂😂

    • Tiffany :) says:

I was impressed with how nuanced her position was. She actually knew a lot of details and was delivering the info in an entertaining way! That is GOLD. I’m so glad she made the point about shutting down gov’t for legitimate causes vs. pandering. Our own politicians can’t make that point in such a strong way.

    • otaku fairy says:

I can’t really love her due to her some things she’s done that are completely unacceptable, but there’s something about her. I agree with what she says here though, and the Twerk video is awesome.

  6. Chingona says:

While I agree with what she says Cardi is becoming known for disrespecting, belittling and not PAYING people who have worked for her or with her.I personally know a company that she did this to. I am also tired of celebrities speaking out about causes and then not doing anything about them, it comes off as self serving. If you really care about the government workers not getting paid call, write, email or representatives. You can help locally by donating gift cards, helping pay electric bills, getting businesses to give free services/ products or discounts to the goverment workers. There are so many ways to actually help instead of just tweeting or posting.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Yikes, that is a good point. She sounds a little like Trump in that regard, stiffing the people working hard for her because she has more power than them.

I do agree with her points in the video, but I also think she needs to treat people she employs with respect.

  7. Catwoman says:

I am by no stretch a prude or clutcher of pearls and while I completely agree with the sentiments, there is absolutely no need for all the profanity. We get it: you’re a badass. No need to be gutter. And this from one who throws the f bomb herself but saves it for truly f@@kworthy occasions.

    • CairinaCat says:

I think people being evicted, starving, babies not getting formula to eat, workers not getting paid and all the other horrible heartache is “f@@kworthy”

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

And I’m tired of people – specifically WOMEN policing other women’s (especially WOC) language, bodies, etc. You don’t like swearing? Then don’t swear. Problem solved. And it’s pretty telling that you don’t see people not being able to pay their mortgages and feed their kids as not being f-ck worthy. If that’s not f-ck worthy than what is??

      • otaku fairy says:

+1. It does get frustrating at times when the focus goes back to decorum and women of color or sometimes women of any racial background staying classy under fire instead of the actual fires. To me, anything about what Trump and his minions are doing is 100% fuckworthy.
Also, fuck the Pences too- what that little school Mother will be teaching at is doing- both with their policies and with their curriculum- is nothing short of abuse. That’s just the truth. It’s abuse that’s been accepted and normalized in the name of education and religious freedom, and it all just makes my blood boil. But of course the second lady is ok with it all and will not speak out against it. Most of the people who voted for Trump, as well as their apologists too, probably see it all as just a difference of opinion and will cry ‘persecution’ or ‘intolerant leftists’ at those who see it for what it is and aren’t nice about how they say it. #HomophobiaKills #MisogynyKills

      • GreenTurtle says:

It’s not just the decorum thing, either, though that is problematic. It’s that people are *so surprised* that she cares and has on point things to say about politics. Like, how could a rapper and former stripper be, gasp, smart? Classist, anyone?

    • Jamie says:

F*ck that! This is the perfect f**king time to motherf**king curse.

    • Anna says:

Exactly. Seriously, you are tone policing? gtfoh

  8. Snowflake says:

I love her hair and makeup in that video.

    • Kitten says:

Same. That silky black bob looks so great on her. I wish more celebs would ditch the extensions and embrace a shorter, tidier ‘do. It really looks so much fresher than the ratty extensions that so many women seem to favor…

  9. Toot says:

She’s right. Not really a fan, but everything she said was on point.

  10. Rescue Cat says:

Pink Floyd’s The Wall album was released forty years ago but seems more relevant than ever.

  11. WOW says:

That twerk video is amazing and glorious! I don’t care what anybody says lol

  12. Mellie says:

I like her, but this not a newsflash, there is literally no good news in the world right now…just none.

  13. Lexilla says:

I had to google it too. To all my fellow digital immigrants: DHYB means Don’t Hold Your Breath.

  14. Piper says:

The first time Cardi attracted me was when she made a video about Brock Turner who raped a woman behind the garbage. I said then, whoever this is, yes, I Stan. Her statement needed to be said and I’m glad she said it. Please call your congressional senators. We are in crisis mode and our president is serving Big Macs.

  15. JeanGray says:

Cardi has her moments. I was just telling a friend this weekend that I think she needs better people around to help raise her up an teach her the ways of a truly mature, grown woman because I see glimmers of hope in Cardi. I see a lot of myself in her since we’re both from similar backgrounds and both NYC girls, but then she turns around and says or does something so stupid or inappropriate that it turns me off. (Insert Tyra’s “I was rooting for you” gif here). Her levels of ratchetry is why I felt compelled to unfollow her on IG. Also her behavior towards other women who Offset gives his (cough cough) “attention” to is disappointing. But she is spot on here, expletives and all, Cardi, you sometimes make it hard for me to stay mad at you, boo.

  16. Jen says:

SO spot on with “you promised these racist rednecks you were going to build the wall and now you have to do it.” I think he panicked over what’s going on in his administration and had to show his trash supporters that he was going to do the ridiculous things he talked about.

Also, I know Cardi is not for everyone and even as a fan from her early L&HH days, she can be too much for me at times, but I anyone who’s interested in her should read her GQ profile from last April. She really does have a real interest in politics and I believe her heart is in the right place.

  17. wolfie88 says:

We’re in a hellhole cause folks voted for this cheetah cheese stain!

  18. Julia says:

“you know that was impossible. But they voted for you and you promised them this sh-t so now you have to do it.”

So, basically, the whole Brexit kerfuffle as well then? No seriously, this is almost word for word what Macron said about the situation in the UK. LOL at the thought of Cardi and the French president talking alike, kinda like it!

    • CK says:

Yep, except Brexit is even more of a sh*t show because both of the largest parties are still arguing for implementing it.
