Nancy Pelosi: Donald Trump can’t give SOTU until he reopens the government

Trump Departure for Dover AFB

I thought we were done with all of the State of the Union stuff LAST week. In summary, Donald Trump wanted to come to Congress in his bigly diaper and piss and moan and lie for an hour about how Democrats are responsible for the Trump Shutdown. Nancy Pelosi’s power move was to tell Trump that until the shutdown is lifted, it’s not happening, because “security concerns.” Speaker Pelosi canceled that bitch, and when Speaker Pelosi cancels a bitch, that bitch stays canceled. So it’s particularly funny that Trump is still having feelings about all of this – he’s so thirsty and dumb – and it’s REALLY funny that he sent her another letter, which reads like groveling:

Thank you for your letter of January 3, 2019, sent to me long after the Shutdown began, inviting me to address the Nation on January 29th as to the State of the Union. As you know, I had already accepted your kind invitation, however, I then received another letter from you dated January 16, 2019, wherein you expressed concerns regarding security during the State of the Union Address due to the Shutdown. Even prior to asking, I was contacted by the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Secret Service to explain that there would be absolutely no problem regarding security with respect to the event. They have since confirmed this publicly.

Accordingly, there are no security concerns regarding the State of the Union Address. Therefore, I will be honoring your invitation, and fulfilling my Constitutional duty, to deliver important information to the people and Congress of the United States of America regarding the State of our Union.

I look forward to seeing you on the evening on January 29th in the Chamber of the House of Representatives. It would be so very sad for our Country if the State of the Union were not delivered on time, on schedule, and very importantly, on location!

[From The White House]

Ah, the old “you invited me before you uninvited me therefore I’m still invited” ploy. It might work if this was, like, The Parent Trap. Thankfully, Speaker Pelosi is like “bitch, stay canceled.”

Pelosi is just flat-out saying that Trump can’t give his sad KKK rally speech until he reopens the government. She has that power. After Pelosi canceled that sh-t, Trump said he would do an “alternative” event and that Speaker Pelosi is “afraid of the truth” (???) and that Pelosi canceling his SOTU was “a great blotch on the incredible country that we all love.” LMAO, stay pressed Bigly.

Hilariously, pressed Bigly tweeted this last night:

I love the use of “great” – is Bigly trying to be funny? Probably not.

Trump got owned by Pelosi. Well played Madam Speaker.

  2. RBC says:

He is taking this too well, that means he has something planned where he gives an unofficial State of the Union address. Notice he says “near future” and no end in sight for the shutdown. He is up to something for sure

    • Chrissy says:

He’ll have another pathetic rally with his dwindling base spewing more crap about how “great” he is and how unAmerican the Speaker and all the Democrats are. Rinse and repeat.

    • Lightpurple says:

Someone else wrote those tweets last night. Most likely Nagini.

      • Kitten says:

        MTE
We all know this man isn’t capable of taking “no” for an answer.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

That’s what I was thinking. There’s no way he wrote those. First of all, they’re written in complete, cogent sentences. Also, aside from using four periods in each ellipses instead of three, they’re punctually correct. He definitely didn’t write that.

    • Original T.C. says:

He’s an insecure fameho. He wants to give the speech with all the glamour and cloak of office in the big chamber. He knows no whereelse can compete for venue. According to Whitehouse sources, he expected Pelosi to buckle and backdown.

      • Rapunzel says:

Which is dumb, cause why should she? He’s too dumb to realize he has no leverage. Pelosi has what he wants, but he’s got nothing. Whomp Whomp.

  3. Des says:

In other words, “Nancy Pelosi, whom I call ‘Nancy'” just handed me my butt.

  4. IlsaLund says:

The petulant orange man-child will dig his heels in deeper now and continue to hold federal workers hostage. Pelosi winning this round has injured his ego and he can’t have a woman beat him twice.

  5. Maya says:

Nancy drops the mike and walks away in her amazing stilettos..

Trump has been able to bully and intimidate people all his life but he has never been able to bully a woman in power.

Nancy has the power and she is whipping his sorry ass hard.

  6. Scal says:

Look he can still give a state of the union. Up until fairly recently-the state of the union was delivered in a letter from the president which she offered as that’s legal. He can give a speech anywhere and invite congress-he just can’t give it at the capitol building unless BOTH the house and senate invite him.

The fact that he’s whining about not being able to do it at the capitol just shows what he’s really upset about is a woman having power over him and he can’t bully her or do anything about it. If he didn’t have such a delicate ego he’d just schedule his event and call her out there. Which we all know is going to happen anyway but he’s going to cry like a spoiled toddler until then.

    • RedOnThe Head says:

Scal, thank you for pointing that out. The Constitution only requires that the President give the address, it doesn’t have to be done from the House floor. She doesn’t have the power to cancel the SOTU, she only has the power to not invite him to the House floor to deliver it. From a lot of comments I’ve been reading everywhere, it seems as though a lot of folks don’t understand the actual facts and believe the Speaker has the authority to cancel the entire address. Now that the two of them have engaged in this pissing contest, he’s just going to find another venue to deliver from. And it’s going to be just as bad, or worse, as if he were in the Capital.

I can’t stand Pelosi and I dislike Trump even more if that’s possible. I’m just pissed off that they’re spending time engaging in this childish game rather than getting their shit together and ending the shutdown. And other things like governing. You know, the basic crap they’re elected to do. All of this grandstanding isn’t doing a damn thing to put federal workers back to work. I’m so disgusted with our so called elected leaders I don’t know what to do.

      • whatWHAT? says:

“I’m just pissed off that they’re spending time engaging in this childish game rather than getting their shit together and ending the shutdown.”

this is not a “both sides” thing.

Pelosi and the House have voted on/passed a bill no fewer than 4 times that will open the gov’t. One of them (all of them?) were the EXACT SAME BILL that the Senate voted on and passed and 45 was going to sign until he got shamed out of it by Rush “Oxy” Limbaugh and Ann “Ronald McDonald” Coulter. it is McConnell and 45 who are the reason for the shutdown and the reason it still goes on.

      • Nikki says:

And how exactly do you think Nancy Pelosi should “get her shit together and end the shutdown”? Quite frankly, unless she gives into him on the wall, ending the shutdown is entirely in his, and Mitch McConnell’s hands. Af far as I see it, she IS doing her job, because stonewalling him is precisely what she should be doing. And you’d better believe that if she and the dems “get their shit together” and cave now to the mad king, this shutdown is an ace he will keep in his back pocket and play over and over and over again

      • molly says:

Yeah, Nancy already voted to open the government and end the shutdown in her House. She did her job. Call up Mitch if you have further questions about governing.

      • Lightpurple says:

It is not the job of the Speaker of the House to negotiate anything with the President. Indeed, the Constitution directs otherwise. Her job is to pass legislation to fund the government functions mandated in the Constitution. If the President disagrees with that legislation, there is a mechanism in the Constitution that can override him. She has passed the legislative bill. It now sits on the desk of Mitch McConnell who refuses to do his job.

      • RedOnThe Head says:

Sigh. I knew if I said anything even remotely negative about Pelosi it would be viewed as an attack of some sort. I’m merely referring to the fact that they are ALL responsible for running the government. I’m not interested in pointing fingers and playing sides, it doesn’t accomplish anything. I’m interested in our entire elected body gettting to work, putting aside their differences, and negotiating a deal that will pass and put people back to work. And yes, I’m including Trump and McConnell in that group. Again, all of them. I fail to see what is wrong with that.

      • Veronica S. says:

They are all responsible for running the government, but saying Democrats are equally to blame for this is fundamentally fallacious. Donald Trump already had a bill on his desk with wall funding last year. He vetoed it because it had DACA protections. Then he got a bill in December by his REPUBLICAN DOMINATED CONGRESS. He rejected that. Now he’s throwing a temper tantrum because Pelosi told him flat out – before she even took power – that the a Democratic House would not support a useless, taxpayer-draining, xenophobic wall bullshit. He had his chance last year. He blew it. That’s it. That’s the story. That’s how we got here. There are no alternative facts on the matter.

This isn’t about whether or not you like Nancy Pelosi. You can’t “put aside differences” when one side is literally running their platform on white supremacy. This isn’t some 1990s Newt Gingrich/Bill Clinton show down over healthcare and a blowjob. People are literally dying because of this man’s border policies. He has been repeatedly told that the measure will not be effective, and when offered bills with border security that has been suggested, he rejects it. He’s literally manufacturing a crisis to rally his base, which is the kind of shit dictators do before grabbing power.

Pelosi is not the one playing games. Pelosi is doing her job, which is not giving into the temper tantrum of a jackass president who literally wants to drain American resources because he lied to his base about who would be paying for that wall. These bills are making it out of the House.
It’s the Senate and president who are blocking it.
The people to direct your ire to are McConnell (who is getting furloughed workers who were protesting outside his office ARRESTED) and Donald Trump. Suggesting otherwise is just parroting the false MSM narrative that this is a two-party problem. No, it’s a one-party problem, and they had their chance – a chance that they stole with gerrymandering, voter suppression, and corruption in the first place.

Democrats control only one portion of government – the House. Republicans control literally every other branch, including the other chamber of Congress, and up until last month, they controlled all branches. So if they can’t get their shit together, that’s on them. If his maneuvers appealed to the American people, he wouldn’t have lost the House. The people spoke with their vote, and Pelosi has a responsibility to the voting populace to follow through on that.

      • Kitten says:

I think you need to take the “L” on this one, RedOnTheHead.
It’s a little too convenient to say that this is “government’s fault” when there is ONE MAN (well really two if you include Mitch) who could re-open the government with a snap of his fingers. I also really don’t appreciate you framing our replies as “rushing to defend Nancy”. This isn’t about liking Nancy or not, this is about holding the RIGHT people accountable for what they’re doing to this country. This is about the f*cking TRUTH and not rewriting it as a “both sides” narrative.

But as others above said, Pelosi IS doing the job that we elected her to do. 70% of Americans don’t want our tax money to go towards a useless, expensive, XENOPHOBIC wall. And here’s the thing: Trump, Mitch and the GOP don’t care about the wall either, only *the fight* which is red meat to their psychotic base. They are holding Americans hostage just so they can control the media narrative and fire up their base. The Dems, on the other hand, desperately WANT the government open and have offered several options to the GOP. But they also know that they can’t negotiate with a terrorist like Trump because the Great Dealmaker has no idea how to make a deal, he only knows how to issue demands.

The “compromise” bill that Trump brought to Pelosi was the legislative embodiment of Stephen Miller’s masturbatory dream to rollback immigration policies to the 1920s. It was cruel and another slap in the face to Central American families seeking asylum here in the US. But again, Trump knew that the bill was never going to be accepted by Dems and he didn’t care. Because he WANTS THIS. The government shutdown does NOT benefit Dems in any way, but it benefits Trump in MULTIPLE ways, beginning with grand jury subpoenas not being delivered and ending with the media focusing on this, instead of the myriad of crimes surrounding the Trump campaign.

      • whatWHAT? says:

Thank you, Veronica S, for stating so clearly that even people who want to pretend to be “fair and balanced” can get it.

as stated, Red, it’s not about whether or not you “like” Speaker Pelosi or agree with everything she does. this is absolutely a one-sided problem and for you to try to claim that all parties are to blame is flat-out wrong. yes, they are all responsible for running the gov’t, which is what Pelosi is trying to do. but it’s 45 who has said that he won’t sign anything that doesn’t include his $5bil for a wall. it’s McConnell that has said that he won’t vote on any bill that he knows the *president won’t sign. that is NOT negotiating or compromising, that is hostage-holding. Pelosi has offered $ for border security, measures that would actually HELP, and 45 is rejecting it.

      • Veronica S. says:

What baffles me is that people are acting as though “just give him what he wants” isn’t a hugely problematic approach with horrific implications down the line. If you hold the lives of 800,000 people hostage and then get what you want, all it’s done is convince Trump and the unethical leaders that come after him to continue doing it. It’s a tacit acceptance that such behavior is tolerable. This is bigger than just the wall funding. This is literally about undermining the entire democratic process by holding a budget hostage. Add in the fact that it’s a MANUFACTURED CRISIS supported by xenophobia, racism, and sexism, and that’s setting the stage for the destruction of the country’s basic checks and balances.

      • Natalia says:

        @ Nikki

Exactly. Thank you. The Dems have capitulated to the Republicans for too many damn years and I’m sick of it.

And I LOVE that it’s a woman is standing up to this mad puppet and calling his bluff.

Go give your State of the Union address in a red state corn field owned by one of the dwindling numbers of farmers who support you, or from a KKK or Nazi rally, jerk!

I’m furious that the furloughed government employees have to stand in line at food banks and/or take out high interest loans that will have to be paid back with their lump sum back pay. And just when will that be?

        Furious at this latest travesty.

  7. PhillyGal says:

I hope he gives the address somewhere else. His schtick is old and stale, and it seems like every time he opens his mouth lately, his poll numbers decrease. Blab away, idiot!

    • Christin says:

Speaking of poll numbers — A Bigly one-month drop was being covered on TV last night, and my thoughts were that it might be the one catalyst to get him to finally back down and end the shutdown.

  8. mycomment says:

dotard’s letter was written by someone else… but you know he’s responsible for this:
***sent to me long after the Shutdown began*** — scrawled in giant capitalized letters with exclamation marks…

and he definitely had to have someone explain what ‘concurrent resolution’ meant.

***no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber.***
bingo. this is what he wants.. that visual of him standing over congress, with his idiot republicon members jumping up and down, cheering and hooting in support — just like the puppets they are.

i’m surprised he’s not going to Oklahoma and holding his rally in the football stadium…

  9. Chef Grace says:

Maybe he will take his bigly dumb self to the border and spew his mind mud at his mindless mud sucking minions.
Pelosi , Goddess bless her, knows she can’t reason with him, but stays so professional.
Maybe though, she could draw some simple pictures to go with her letters next time. 😉

  10. Rapunzel says:

And clever Pelosi is all “Mr. President, I hope by saying “near future” you mean you will support the House-passed package to #EndTheShutdown that the Senate will vote on tomorrow.” Squeeze him, Nancy. Turn him into Orange Juice.

Trump getting school in the art of the deal.

    • Kitten says:

He’s getting schooled on both the Constitution and the machinations of American government, which only highlights how completely ignorant Trump is on both matters. Dude keeps bringing a knife to a gun fight.

I’m very happy with Pelosi’s speakership so far. She’s been doing everything right, and masterfully so.

  11. OriginalLala says:

Im not gonna lie I was tepid on Pelosi but she has been on fire since becoming Speaker again..and I am loving her!

  12. Dttimes2 says:

All this about security concerns when all the government business plays out on TWITTER….let that sink in. Impeach this buffoon before he gets America nuked and us Canadians along with it

  13. Eric says:

Emperor Zero tried to put “Nancy baby” into a corner by suggesting that he was going to give the SOTU speech in the House and Nancy said

“BITCH, I OWN ALL THE CORNERS!”

    🔪🔪🔪💥💥💥🔪🔪🔪

  14. Lightpurple says:

I was so looking forward to him trying to enter the chamber any way on Tuesday night only to be stopped by the Sergeant at Arms barring his way and waving the Mace of the Republic in his orange face. I can still dream that when he finally does deliver this ridiculous narrative of lies, at some point, Madame Speaker on the dais behind him will have enough of his lies and lack of decorum, reach around beside her chair to pick up the Mace of the Republic herself, and whack him off the back of the head with it.

    • Kitten says:

Me too. I was really hoping for that level of humiliation for him but hey, this is a close second. Mostly, I love that a strong and capable woman is tying his hands and spanking the eff out of him.
      (NOT with a Forbes magazine)

    • whatWHAT? says:

I so badly want someone to yell “LIAR!” like that pr*ck did to Obama and watch all the 45 bootlickers clutch their pearls.

    • Esmom says:

“Mace of the Republic.” I love it, lol!

The thing is, the deplorables still blame Pelosi and the Dems. The narrative of lies continues unabated.

      • Lightpurple says:

Have you seen it? It’s awesome and would do serious damage if she whacked him with it.

      • Veronica S. says:

I thought you were being hyperbolic, but no, it’s a real thing! Got some nice edges around the wings that could do some nasty damage if wielded properly.

  15. pixiestyx says:

“…the SOTU Address because there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber. ” And just like that he cared about history and tradition.

  16. Veronica S. says:

I hate him, and I hate the mass media turning this into a match of equivalent responsibility when all of us with two functioning eyes and brains watched what went down last year when he cancelled two budget bills, one of which had wall funding – he just didn’t want to give DACA recipients citizenship. And now he wants to turn around and insult those people by offering “temporary protections,” as though we’re all idiots who don’t see where that will head.

And I hate that millions have to suffer for his uselessness as a human being.

    • Eric says:

      Veronica:
Ditto on the MSM. May they all burn in Hell for propping the dick-tater up when we all knew better on 2016.

      • Fluffy Princess says:

The MSM could have helped stop him from being elected. His life and business dealings would have sunk him if the MSM came out swinging all day every day. But no. Ratings! Ratings! $$$$$$$$$$$$$. That’s all that matters.

      • Snowflake says:

YES fluffy, yes! They were so soft on him that it really pissed me off. They’re partly responsible for his win.

  17. Rapunzel says:

Fortunately, Pelosi can afford to be brilliant like this. It’s the beauty of not caring what the haters think. Pelosi is the most hated woman for right wingers, behind HRC. She knows this and knows that she can never do anything that will please these folks. So she can confidently stand strong against Trump. She knows that even she gave in, it would get her nothing from these haters. It’s a wonderful thing, being unafraid to upset others. And ironically, it’s the right wing hate which empowers its enemies. And they’re too stupid to realize.

    • Veronica S. says:

Too much emphasis is placed on women needing to be likable. Stop framing women as objects for the intention of pleasure, and you actually get effective and useful people in power.

    • Lightpurple says:

She also knows her stuff backwards, forwards, right side up, upside down, and inside out. She knows her place and the power of that place. She rules the House and all in it. She is always professional, measured, calm, never showing a hint of anger or exasperation. Every communication of hers to him has closely adhered to long established protocol with constitutional citations. She’s doing her job and she’s doing it beautifully. Tip O’Neill, the last Speaker to fully understand the position, would be in awe.

  18. Jerusha says:

If you’re not following the Daily Don on IG, you really should. He has a post everyday savaging Tub O’ Lard in cartoon form. Today, it’s Nancy dogwalking little trumpkins. Hope this link works.

As someone who was raised by her Italian grandmother, you learn that no one messes with Nonna—she really does rule the house.

Cheeto should embrace Our Nonna, i.e, learn some manners, stay in his corner and speak only when spoken to…

  20. Lady D says:

The State of the Union is just a speech, right? I don’t understand why it is such a big deal to IQ45. Besides the sanctity of the building, is there anything else to the speech that he hasn’t said a bazillion times at one of his rallies, that would incense him so much?

    • Jerusha says:

It commands the attention of all the networks. It’s like Hitler’s Nuremberg rallies in coverage.

      • Swack says:

And he’s afraid after the last speech from the Oval Office that he will not get the coverage he would get if it was given in the Chamber since that last speech was a nothing “berder”. Most of it is about coverage and tv time for him.

  21. Eric says:

Now she’s dog-walking Wilbur “let me eat cake” Ross!

  22. RoyalBlue says:

Who the heck ever decided this is the best form of government?!?!

    • Janet says:

Well look at all the other countries in the world and tell us which one you would rather live with. Perhaps Cuba? No wait Russia? Um…probably not let’s say Iran. Ok. And for those of you who continue to compare this to the Nazi’s and the horrible things done to the Jews just stop. It trivializes what actually happened. Come up with some new phrasing.

      • Lady D says:

Royal B. this form of government has checks and balances with it. I just don’t think the powers that be ever anticipated the major players refusing to do their job honourably or at all.
@Janet, There are also decent governments out there such as New Zealand, Australia, a few Asian countries, Canada, or most of Europe, they’re not all bad.

  23. Q T Hush says:

    To Light Purple,
Thanks for reminding me of Tip. Those were the days of a functioning two party system. Most of the politicians today would’ve been chased out of DC by members from both sides. I would love to hear what Tip would say about our current resident in the WH. He had a wicked wit about him. I’m getting nostalgic of saner days.
