Gemma Chan in Oscar de la Renta at the SAGs: amazing and gorgeous?

I have absolutely loved Gemma Chan’s fashion this awards season. The cast of Crazy Rich Asians has really brought it, and Gemma has been the standout. Unfortunately CRA didn’t have a big night last night like they did at the Critics Choice Awards, but I loved to see them. Gemma looked amazing in a high low baby pink Oscar de la Renta featuring one shoulder and an incredible train with layers of scalloped fabric pieces. This dress doesn’t photograph as well as it moves on camera. The entire look was drama and Gemma can pull it off. I want to see her in all the movies and promoting all the things.

Constance Wu was also in a strapless silver Oscar de la Renta with a gathered side and high leg slit. The arm cuff is a cool touch. I would have liked to see more drama from her, but this is her style, she’s not wearing risky looks like Gemma. The beading on the gown was so impressive on camera. I thought that about so many of the gowns last night. You could see the craftwork and detailing under the lights.

Michelle Yeoh was in a silver Elie Saab gown featuring an intricately beaded bodice and a full length feathered skirt. This is regal and I’ve also enjoyed seeing her fashion this awards season.

Presenter Awkwafina had on a red Mimi Plange mermaid gown with a beaded half turtleneck cape-like top. I like that feature, it’s unique and it works.

Henry Golding looked like a snack (I stole that line from Kaiser) in a gold Tom Ford jacket. Check out the cool swirly pattern on this. His hair is perfect, he’s got a strategic amount of scruff and he looks like a model.

Henry Golding – one gorgeous man.

God, the whole CRA cast looked SO GREAT last night. I’m not quite so much in love with Awkwafina’s look, but it’s not bad by any means. At this point I think Gemma Chan could wear a bin bag to one of these things and somehow make it look beautiful and elegant, she wears clothes so well. (Not that I’m saying I don’t like her dress from last night, I DO! The colour in particular… so pretty on her.)

      I loved Gemma’s makeup.

Gemma is just hands down one of the prettiest people I have ever seen. She looks amazing in everything. I agree – I don’t love Awkwafina’s dress, but I also don’t really dislike it. It’s certainly better than A LOT of other gowns from the night.

I like how plain Constance’s dress is too, it’s a lot prettier close up because you can see the detail more. And Michelle is just super regal looking.

Couldn’t agree with you more, on everything. Michelle’s is one of my favourite looks of the whole night. I think she and Gemma might be a little bit magic, because normally I don’t even LIKE feathers or ruffles or anything that even resembles them on dresses. (I think I might just love every Gemma look ever, at this point. I don’t think it even matters what the outfit is, she somehow makes me love it every time.)

And YES, I really liked the simple prettiness of Constance’s look too! She looks super lovely. I love her hair- it’s so unfussy and relaxed, and it really works with the overall simplicity of the look.

I don’t even slightly understand why this cast, and this movie, aren’t getting more awards love. It was an outstanding ensemble and just because the movie was a comedy it doesn’t mean they’re not doing work. Baffled how the very basic A Star is Born or the mimicry of Bohemian Rhapsody is “serious acting” and Crazy Rich Asians isn’t. Also, saw CRA and A Simple Favor back-to-back over the holidays and boy do I have the biggest Henry Golding crush now. A snack indeed …

Gemma Chan is obviously gorgeous and, this dress is really working for her in a dramatic fashion. She really has the presence, and the impeccable posture, to pull something this structured off. (Just looking at this picture of her makes me want to stand up straighter.) Not 100% sure why, but the black velvet band at the waist really makes this look for me.

Constance Wu, always amazing, and the 70s vibe of the gown is working for her, especially with the cuff, but not loving her hair? She does look a bit like a Roger Moore-era Bond girl … And I don’t hate it.

Michelle Yeoh is basically doing Oscar gowns all awards season, and I am here for it. Queen.

CRA was definitely robbed of many awards. I went to watch that film with VERY low expectations, because the trailer seemed like nothing more than an average romcom and I even noticed they stole a joke from a Sandra Bullock movie. But I was wrong! The cast was truly spectacular and while the movie wasn’t particularly deep or thought-provoking or anything of the sort, it was a very well-done film and one of the best romcoms to come out in a looooong time.

I’m mindblown Bohemian Rhapsody is nominated for anything. ASIB was bland and overrated, but BR is flat-out bad. I’m not even a fan of Queen and the only thing I could think of watching that movie was “this is clearly not how things went down”. The movie just felt so… fake. Fake, sanitized, and Hollywood-ified. Everything a biopic is not supposed to be.

I’m sad Rami seems like a lock for best actor. He was good, but his performance was very overrated. And even if his portrayal of Freddie was good, THE MOVIE’s portrayal of Freddie was all wrong.

      • Sadezilla says:

Cindy, I ended up seeing BH with my friends, though I would not have picked it myself, and I had the same feeling you did. I thought Rami’s acting was fine, but everybody else’s was so contrived. I think it’s a scripting problem – we know that the surviving members of Queen had influence on how things were portrayed, and it shows. The scene where John (the bassist) was introducing the band to We Will Rock You was like sitcom-level corny. I found those moments very jarring.

By far my favorite part was the bassist’s hairstyles. His hair in the LiveAid scene is A LOAF. And his baby bangs plus mullet in the 70s were just amazing. Just give me a montage of the hair, everything else about the movie was lame.

      • Cindy says:

        @Sadezilla

That exact moment you described was the pinnacle of what I was talking about. One sees a biopic expecting to see how things really went down, but everything was so Hollywood-like and corny, it felt like fanfiction.

  4. Lucy2 says:

Overall they look great, but I don’t love any of these dresses. Though that beading is amazing.

  5. Cindy says:

Is it just me or does Gemma kinda look like Zendaya? Gorgeous dress, that color looks great on her skin.

I think Constance looks horrible! That dress makes her legs look so stumpy and her body so boxy. It’s so cheap looking.

  6. ByTheSea says:

Henry Golding is so freaking gorgeous.

  7. Who ARE these people? says:

What’s the difference between a mullet skirt and a high-low effect like that?

    • Celebitchy says:

I think it’s the same. It can be a struggle to use the right descriptions without sounding repetitive when we have to write so much after an awards show.

    • tuille says:

I’m so tired of mullets or hi-lo or whatever they call it this year. Same with the single-sleeve look. Doesn’t the other arm get cold?

  8. tempest prognosticator says:

Every single one of them looks gorgeous. A feast for the eyes.

  9. Esmom says:

I really like all the looks here although I’d have to give Gemma a slight edge for the lead. I love the petal-like effect on the skirt, the color is lovely on her and she just owns it.

  10. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

This is a wow page. Loverly.

  11. SlightlyAnonny says:

The cast of CRA and Black Panther are actively fighting for the most Beautiful Cast Award. I sigh (legit sigh) everytime I see Gemma Chan. She is so lovely.

  12. The Voice says:

Gemma Chan is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen. And all her looks for this award season have been amazing. She has the posture and bone structure of a model. Her makeup is always perfect. I love how her looks are so different and dramatic and she easily pulls them off.

Constance’s dress looks super boring. I wish she would take some more risks. Michelle Yeoh always looks so elegant. Love that she has to wear a watch with all her gowns. I always want to wear a watch, too! Don’t love Awkwafina’s dress. She also slouches so it just makes her look extra stubby. Henry Golding is such a damn fine looking man. I can’t wait to see more of him!! I loved him in CRA and I’m super excited that he’s everywhere these days. Seems like a kind and humble guy as well!

  13. Patty says:

And Gemma is dating Dominic Cooper! Some women are just blessed. She’s been killing it this awards season. It’s great to see her getting more attention. She’s not only beautiful but a pretty terrific actress too.

  14. minx says:

    Such beautiful dresses and people.

  15. NWRose says:

    They are all gorgeous ❤

  16. PutnamPrincess says:

Henry Golding looks absolutely delicious. I want him for dinner.
