Brie Larson is already an Oscar winner and she was invited to present at the Oscars because of corporate synergy: Disney owns ABC, Disney owns Marvel, and Brie’s Captain Marvel comes out in a few weeks. She didn’t even bother bringing anyone from her family or a close friend as an Oscar date – she arrived with Samuel L. Jackson, her costar, and they presented together. Brie already looks tired and her Captain Marvel promotion hasn’t even really started! Her gown here is Celine – I actually think it’s worth noting that Brie has an incredible figure and she can wear pretty much anything and it will hang beautifully. The dress itself is fine. But how she styled it… good lord. Her hair looked unwashed and unstyled. Her makeup looked like she did it herself in the limo over. I suspect she ate a pot brownie before she arrived on the carpet.
Tessa Thompson in Chanel. I get that a few people wanted to pay tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, but this dress is a sausage casing with ruffles. She doesn’t even look like she can walk in it. I expect more from Tessa, she’s one of my faves.
Here are some of the hot guys from the Oscars (there weren’t a ton). Stephan James wore a fabulous red velvet Etro tuxedo. Henry Golding was a dream in a custom Ralph Lauren tuxedo. Chris Evans decided to go with a pop of color with a great blue jacket. And one of the highlights of the red carpet was James McAvoy stanning The Favourite.

I have a huge crush on Tessa. I think she’s just stunning (and talented, and articulate, and…) and I agree this look was a little disappointing.
Eeeeah. It always icks a bit when a POC is called “articulate”, even when harm isn’t meant by it.
I’m mortified and crushed that it came across that way and apologize. I think Tessa is a very intelligent woman and I really respect her opinions/worldview in comparison to a lot of other actors, and that’s what I meant by it.
The problem is the top of the dress is smashing Thompson in an unflattering way. Such a beautiful woman deserves a better fit to her dress for such an important event.
I think the silver dress was awesome but terrible on her skintone or with that hair shade. There needed to be something different with the colors somewhere

YES! The colours are all wrong for her – dress, awful dye job. I often wonder why they don’t look at pictures of themselves. It’s really obvious.
I actually really love Tessa’s dress! And I love that Henry Golding went for a old Hollywood vibe.
I think she looks beautiful. While the hair leaves a little to be desired, it doesnt appear unwashed to me and her makeup is beautiful. I dont think it needs to be caked on with 5 different types of contouring and highlighting to be beautiful. Its minimal, and enhances her beauty, not distract from it.
I’m with you on the make-up point. If you can swing it, a lovely face is a million times prettier than an elaborate paint job.
Brie’s dress would be perfect except that it seems to gape around her armpits, weird. Her hair and makeup does look sloppy and underdone but not in a good way. I can’t find a single redeeming quality about Tessa’s dress.
I loved, loved, loved all the men in velvet. Such a cool look. Although this is the first time I’ve seen Stephan’s feet. I’m not a fan of the white boots.

The black dress with golden bandings looks ok, but this ruffling is distracting.
The guy in red looked cute, the second guy ok , the third guy like a Ken Doll and the fourth a little bit too plastic to be pretty.

Tessa Thompson – I have a very similar dress to that from J Crew Factory. It was 11 dollars. So, I dont hate it, but think she could have done better.
Brie Larson could have looked amazing and she didnt. That annoys me when that happens. Like, you are SO CLOSE to looking fabulous. Just go for it!
I love the dress… and am also not a huge fan of the styling. I don’t think it’s far off, though, I think if her hair had been brown it’d have looked better overall.
My hair does that when I dry my roots a bit and let the rest airdry without any product. So to me, it doesn’t look unwashed as much as just completely left alone to do whatever it wanted.
I think Brie looks really pretty, but that hair color is doing her no favors. I didn’t watch the show, but judging by the pictures, she does seem a little listless.
Yeah, I’m hoping it’s a bleaching step in between a hair color change or for a role. Platinum blonde is not a natural fit for everyone, and some women need to really alter their makeup to make it work.
I agree, the hair coloring isn’t the most flattering for her, I think darker hair looks great on her. I like the dress, though I don’t love the shape of the top, but wow her figure is amazing. She’s got to be exhausted from promoting the movie. I hope it does well, I plan on seeing it!
I would like Tessa’s dress a lot more if it just had a full black skirt rather than the ruffles and bunched areas.
In all of the photos from last night I thought that Tessa Thompson looked really pretty, and I’ve never thought that before. Her dress wasn’t the best but I thought she looked really sweet and girlish and her dress, to me anyway, kind of had a throwback, retro vibe with slight flamenco influences. I was surprised it was Chanel, tbh.
I think they were going for a rock ‘n’ roll look to work with the disco styling of the dress, and her hair just wasn’t having it. Considering how bleached it looks, it’s possible there wasn’t much they can do. It can take awhile for the damage to repair itself. I do think they needed a bolder lip to provide more contrast in her face, since the blonde hair is taking her natural color away.
Jesus, is she really that tiny, though, or did somebody just go whack with photoshop? It has to be the angle, but it feels so awkward.
I’m not feeling the red velvet tuxedo. The fit seems off, same with Evan’s blue jacket. Henry Goulding looks very dashing, though.

Similarly with Chris Evans- gorgeous man, obviously, but that hairstyle! Why is it ALWAYS like that? He looks so different (and SO much better, in my opinion) with it worn in a more natural look (look him up in the movie Gifted he did a couple years back. He has NEVER looked better.)

I think Brie’s look is very ‘casual 90s’ ie dressy but disheveled… like her stylist said your hair is platinum so wear the shiny dress!

Love Brie’s dress and the decision to pair it with that style hair and makeup. An updo, for example, or a red lip would have been too much for such a glam dress. Her look works beautifully as is.

I am not a fan of Brie Larsons dress. Ot looks I’ll fitting and basic like a prom dress. Also, she looks bored and wishes she was anywhere else. On the flip side the men on velvet this year…..GEORGOUS! Stephen James and Chris Evan’s LOVE THEM ! The Colors and fit were perfect. As for James “I love hella sexy in anything” McAvoy well enough said. As for Tessa Thompson well I have seen her in some great items so this was underwhelming and from her face she looks like she knows it.
