Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent sequel is called ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ omg

Gwyneth Paltrow signs copies of her new book 'The Clean Plate'

Last summer, Angelina Jolie filmed the Maleficent sequel in London (and LA, I think). It seemed like a low-key production, and there weren’t any reports of drama in general from the Disney set. All the drama came from Angelina and Brad Pitt’s ongoing custody dispute at that time. Angelina just put her head down and did the work. She loved playing Maleficent, and she loved working with Elle Fanning. And now all that love is being moved up! Originally, Maleficent 2 was supposed to be released in 2020. It’s now being released in October of this year. And it had an official Disney title too!! MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL. OMG.

Here’s a huge jump on the calendar: Disney is moving the Angelina Jolie vehicle Maleficent: Mistress of Evil from its post Memorial day May 29 release date next year in 2020 to this year, Oct. 18, 2019. That pre-Halloween frame use to be a time on the calendar where films went to die at the box office, but Universal/Miramax/Blumhouse’s Halloween changed all that last year with a $76.2M opening, proving once again that the right product will draw anyone at any time of year (another example is how New Line’s It turned the once dormant post-Labor Day period into one of the more lucrative weekends at the B.O.)

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will compete against an untitled Blumhouse movie on that date and MGM’s animated version of The Addams Family.

[From Deadline]

I love this. I love that we’re going to get an Angelina Jolie promotional tour this fall. I love that we’ll probably get several magazine interviews and covers too. I love that Disney believes in this franchise so much that they’re fast-tracking it. And I love that everyone involved is leaning into this whole MISTRESS OF EVIL thing. The third film will probably be called Maleficent: Horns of Doom.

That’s hilariously bad. I actually liked the first movie, though.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

I liked it, and so did my daughter (then a teenager).

    • whatWHAT? says:

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the first one. Jolie did the camp/scariness pretty well.

      • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

I loved it, such a great telling of the fairy tale. I loved that the backstory made it more than just the old trope of a woman bitchy for no reason, or envy.

  2. Pringer says:

YES YES YES. OMG I CAN’T WAIT.
I have so missed this Woman on my screen

  3. vanna says:

ARGH I love it. I bet AJ had a good laugh when they presented her with the name.

  4. ShazBot says:

This will also capitalize on Halloween…there will be lots of Maleficent costumes for sale!

    • Pringer says:

exactly i am so excited for this

    • Dee Kay says:

omg i really hope a bunch of little kids run around on Halloween in Maleficent costumes screaming about being the Mistress of Evil. that will be hilarious.

  5. Ai says:

It is indeed kinda bada** that they did this; I didn’t enjoy the first movie except parts of her performance but I would still give this sequel a shot.

  6. Maya says:

Oh yeah so excited for this Angelina vs Michelle. The promotions with these amazing women will be wonderful.

  7. Tiffany says:

I am excited about this one. And it’s coming this year, YAY !!!

  8. phlyfiremama says:

YAHOO!!! I loved the first movie, I look forward to seeing this in the Theater~I do believe that Imax 3D is in the cards for this one, I did it for the first one and it was totally worth it.

  9. Valiantly Varnished says:

Here for it. Can’t wait for the film AND the press tour. Bring on the Angelina interviews and covers!

      Exactly This!!!!!

  10. Vexa says:

The Disney nerd in me is jumping out, but she does actually call herself this in the animated version: she says, “You poor simple fools, thinking you could defeat me, the Mistress of All Evil!”

    • Lizzie says:

yes! came here to say the same thing. i used to repeat that line using a driveway reflector as my staff. that and “cradle? CRADLE? did you hear that my pet they are looking for a baby? hahahaha FOOLS! IDIOTS! IMBECILES!

    • Beach Dreams says:

That line, her dragon transformation and her overall look is why she’s the most iconic Disney villain to me. The scene where Aurora is crying at the vanity and the lights flicker out to show Maleficient’s glowing eyes always scared me.

  11. Mia4s says:

Ummmmm, wasn’t the point of the first movie that she wasn’t actually evil?

    Well…get that sequel money! 🤷‍♀️

    • Hmmm says:

I read somewhere that this one shows why she is evil.

    • broodytrudy says:

Yep, they completely wrecked the character. Let us have this deliciously evil, unapologetically petty woman instead of turning her into some jaded figure with a tragic backstory. How great would it have been to see Angelina stomping on people and casting curses just because she didn’t get invited to a party, instead of some weird wing chopping shit (and yes, i know it’s a metaphor, point still stands)? We could have had an unapologetic woman villain, but ended up with, “awh shucks, see guys? she isn’t all that bad!!”

      • Lynnie says:

I was under the impression that Maleficent was supposed to be a Twisted like version of the story which is why they made her a tragic antihero of sorts

  12. Brittney says:

This made my whole week. I’m so excited for more horned Angelina.

  13. cee says:

Woohoo!!!! What a great day. More pics, interviews and just plain happiness.

  14. Hmmm says:

Angelina was spotted at Disney studios a few weeks ago. The story was that she watched Maleficent 2 with the head honcho – so guess he likes what he saw.

She’s also set to start filming in May for an action/thriller too. 😈

  15. Lucy says:

Question is, will Sam Riley be involved in this one? I need to know, it’s for science.

    • Tiffany says:

It shows on the Wiki page for the film that he is part of the cast list.

And Chiwetel Ejiofor is on the list as well. So, are we not gonna get a sequel to Salt.

  16. Emilia says:

So that means 4 Disney live action adaptations in one year right? This movie, Aladdin, Dumbo and Lion King. They really need to space them out better because there’s no way they’re all going to do well, there has got to be at least one flop in the mix.

    • Lynnie says:

I’m thinking critic wise it’s gonna be Aladdin and commercially it’ll be Dumbo.

  17. Canber says:

Multiple focus groups were tasked to come up with the corniest name.

  18. Dee Kay says:

“Mistress of Evil” is canonical for Maleficent. After she watched the animated Sleeping Beauty for the first time, my niece used to run around all the time saying, “You think you can defeat ME, ME the Mistress of Evil?!!” and it used to crack my mother up (RIP, Mom).

Last summer, I showed Maleficent to my littlest niece and nephew and omg they LOVED it. As soon as it was done they wanted to watch it again (and we did). I hope I get the chance to see Maleficent MISTRESS OF EVIL with them :).

  19. magdalene says:

    YEESSSS…pleasantly surprised.

  20. Rtms says:

I’m not sure how this is going to play out unless it takes place between chopping her wings off and the ending of the first movie…..? Ok yeah I’m confused about the title because they went out of their way to redeem the character.

One interesting side note, she will going up against Charlize Theron who voices Mortica Addams in the Animated The Aadams Family movie. These two can’t get away from each other lol.

  21. Steff says:

I saw the first one recently with my niece and I hate to say this (especially on this website) but Angie was terrible in it. She cannot do accents! I do however like her in action roles and wish she’d play wild and crazy characters like she did in the 90s.

    • Carmen says:

The general critical consensus was that she was excellent in it. I agreed when I saw the movie.

    • cee says:

What!!!! She was amazing to the tune of $746million. I can not wait to see her on screen again. I am a big Michelle Pfiffer fan too.

      • Lisa says:

People are allowed to not like a performance. Even if it made lots of money. Big Boxoffice doesn’t always mean its a great film. I liked the first. It was enough for me. Not really interested in another. I won’t see it at the theater. But will when it comes on some streaming service.

  22. Kebbie says:

I thought she wasn’t actually evil in the last one

  23. Poppy says:

Can’t wait to see this, maleficient!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  24. BEE says:

    Maybe it’s a prequel!

  25. 10KTurtle says:

But the first movie showed she wasn’t evil? I liked the first movie, I thought it was a clever re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty story.

  26. anp says:

I am so Excited to be able to see this film. I am sure it will be a Very Amazing Film.

  27. SJR says:

A friend dragged me along to the first one. I really just went along so we could stop for lunch after. I liked it, good movie, good special effects, AJ did fine.
I will actually round up friend and we can go see M2. AJ is an actual movie star, generally in good movies. AJ and James McAvoy were both very good in their action movie. AJ held her own in Salt also. I admit I loved it when she proceeded to kick the living daylights outta Liev Schriber.
Going to the movies now…takes a decent movie to get me to make the effort.
Keanu Reeves John Wick 3 opens in May and myself and 4 others are making a day of it.
And I will buy it on DVD too.

  28. Sidewithkids says:

THIS IS AMAZING. SO HAPPY ABOUT IT. The movie must be good too b/c they’re moving it up. Also, they must have wanted Angie to have a movie in 2019. She’s been gone so long, 4 years since the last film where she acted.

She’ll have the film w/ David O and the animated Ivan movie in 2020. How great is this!!!! ANGIE IS BACK!!!! Angie’s a great actress but I always felt Angie hadn’t tapped into all the talent she has as an actress yet. So I’m glad she’s back at it, on the big screen again. Also, hope this time, she works w/ more masterful directors like Curaron, Scorsese, Mendes, Villeneuve, etc, etc.

Sidenote: BP’s stans must be crapping in their pants right now. His movie was pushed back b/c it’s prob awful. I know the director is awful. Plus, they said she didn’t have any friends in Hollywood and she would never work again. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. I love proven hateful people wrong. I know Angie does too.
