Angelina Jolie is in talks for her first ‘superhero’ movie, Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’

Disney's 'Dumbo' Premiere

A few weeks ago, Angelina Jolie walked the red carpet at the LA premiere of Disney’s Dumbo. She brought her four youngest kids too. Jolie doesn’t have a role in Dumbo, but she’d worked with some of the special effects team before, and as I pointed out at the time, Angelina is a Disney Lady now. In addition to Maleficent and the sequel (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil!!), she’s working for/with Disney on several other projects too. I also said in that Dumbo post: “I expected her to end up in a Star Wars movie and/or a Marvel movie.” Well, guess what? Chica got a Marvel movie.

Angelina Jolie is getting ready to make her first foray into the world of superhero movies. The Oscar-winning actress is in talks to star in Marvel Studios’ The Eternals, a superhero team adventure feature being directed by Chloe Zhao.

Jolie has chosen the Marvel project based on the Jack Kirby-created title about superpowered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous offshoot known as the Deviants that were created by the cosmic beings called Celestials.

While details about the movie are being kept under wraps, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans. It is unclear who Jolie will play. Marvel had no comment.

While this will be Jolie’s first superhero movie, it is not her first comic book movie— she starred in the 2007 adaptation of Mark Millar’s Wanted.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

La Jolie + Marvel = something I can get behind. Sorry, Avengers. Of course, I don’t know anything about The Eternals and whether this is actually a good property, but if it’s being produced by Marvel and they’re throwing their money behind it, that means it will make a billion dollars and Angelina will be the first lady of Disney/Marvel. Yay.

    Please no.

    • Erinn says:

I agree. I like her well enough, but I’m not into this idea. Jolie doing action movies if great, but I don’t want Jolie superhero flicks.

      • whatWHAT? says:

Initially I agreed with both of you, then I remembered Cate Blanchette as Hela in that Thor movie, and I think maybe she could pull it off.

    • noway says:

I agree. There are enough super hero movies, and I’m just kind of tired of them. Plus this is now a bunch of not as popular super heroes. I think she’s a better actress than that. Now that she is older she was supposed to bring the more meaty roles. Still I can’t really blame her, I’m sure the money is great.

    • Sips.Tea says:

      Absolutely not!!

    • pria says:

I don’t get the ‘please no,’ with regards to casting. What does it even mean? Please no, let’s not put an action star and Oscar winning actress in a Marvel flick? Who has time to gripe about shite like this, and just…why? Irrational hatred. Is this coming from deluded people who lacking an end to Brangelina like the one they *think* Aniston got (Brad cheats, leaves Angelina for Marion Cotilliard..hahahah), wanted Angelina to not be what she’s always been, a successful working actress?

Or is it that the fanboy sickness that affects males has seeped into the celeb gossip message board forum largely populated by women. So now you’ll see women crying and raging over what they perceive as miscasting?

Except there’s one problem. You don’t know what The Eternal are about and you don’t know who she’ll be playing, which makes complaints even more catty and nonsensical.

  2. ByTheSea says:

    meh

  3. Alexandria says:

Sorry but yasss please! I miss my action movie Angelina!

  4. Mia4s says:

Interesting. I wonder if she’s a one-off Cate Blanchett type thing, or if she’s signing one of their life-debt agreements. 😁

  5. runcmc says:

And she’ll do interviews!!! I wanna hear it all.
    I am here for this!

  6. TheOriginalMia says:

I was so excited when I saw the news. Can’t wait to hear more. I think the Eternals fall into Phase 2 with Captain Marvel’s Avengers movies.

    • ds says:

yes, and Sersi is connected to Captain America. So there’s the Avengers link to it.

    • Lightpurple says:

The MCU is actually going into Phase 4. Avengers Endgame finishes off Phase 3. Spiderman Far From Home kicks off Phase 4. I’m a MCU geek.

      • Char says:

@Lightpurple I think she meant a phase post-Avengers, cause it’s clear this formation will be over after Endgame.

  7. Jerusha says:

It’s being directed by Chloe Zhao, director of The Rider and Songs My Brother Taught Me. Hell, on that basis alone I’d go see it if it starred Scott Baio and James Woods. She’s a fantastic filmmaker.

    • Jess says:

My thought exactly. The fact that Zhao is directing is awesome. Wonder if that influenced AJ’s decision? I love the idea of the two of them working together.

  8. Onerous says:

Other rumored casting – Alexander Skarsgård, Luke Evans and Millie Bobby Brown!

    • Mia4s says:

      Sounds about white. 🙄

How disappointing if true. The Eternals has an opportunity to be the most diverse cast the MCU has ever seen. That list plus Jolie is the usual white wash.

I assume Luke Evans is rumoured because one of the characters is gay and they are rumoured to want an openly gay actor? Although with China and other foreign territories in play I assume the character will be gay in the same way Dumbledore is gay. 😂

      • Onerous says:

This was the original casting rumor last week –

“For The Eternals, Marvel is looking to bring on a diverse cast. They are looking for a woman of color to headline this project, for the role of the human Margo Damien who befriends the group. For the shortlist of actress they wish to bring on for this part, we have:

        Ana de Armas
        Eiza Gonzales
        Gina Rodriguez
        Naomi Scott

        For the male lead Ikaris:

        Alexander Skarsgard
        Armie Hammer
        Sam Heughan
        Charlie Hunnam

        Secondary female lead Sersi:

        Sofia Boutella
        Tatianna Maslany
        Marie Avgerepoulous

And for supporting roles, we have:

        Luke Evans
        Sylvia Hoeks
        Rami Malik
        Millie Bobby Brown
        David Oyelowo
        Ian McShane”

      • Char says:

Armie Hammer? Sounds about hypocritical and desperate.

      • Mia4s says:

Oh one of THOSE “lists”? It means nothing. There are at least three actors on that list that definitely could not take roles due to scheduling conflicts. That’s either bad information or an old casting brainstorming list. Not saying someone on the list couldn’t end up in the cast, but FFS please not box office poison, Jordan Peterson loving, Charlie Hunnam. Barf.

So we know nothing. Somehow that’s more exciting.

    • CER says:

Rumors from fan sites only for this. The Jolie story is from THR, which is a legit source, so there may actually be something happening.

      • TMC says:

THR also said Angelina Jolie was “in talks” to star in “Murder on the Orient Express;” no deal was signed and the role went to Michelle Pfieffer. So it is a long road potentially to confirmed.

      • Toniko says:

@TMC. Thank god, damn that movie was baaad! Don’t touch Suchet Poirot. Thank you very much.

      • lucy2 says:

Yeah maybe one of that group will pan out. But Skarsgard would make me watch!

Otherwise this Angelina in a Marvel movie seems like a weird thing, she just doesn’t seem like the right type of actress for one of those roles. I’m not a fan of her acting though…or most Marvel movies either…so eh, I don’t really care. But I enjoyed Captain Marvel a lot, and nominate Brie Larson to be the First Lady of Marvel !

    • Michael says:

There is only one character MMB could play and that is the child trickster character. It was a boy in the comic but a gender switch is not all that uncommon

  9. Cee says:

Woohoo! Angie is already a superhero but will look forward to seeing her on screen as one.

  10. ds says:

I say Sersi! She can never be killed!

  11. Michael says:

Cersi is the only character that makes sense for her. Not crazy about her playing that role but Marvel is good at casting so I will reserve judgment till I see what happens

  12. Patty says:

    This is a terrible idea.

    • pria says:

Why so? So Oscar nominees RDJ, Scarlett J, Paltrow, etc cab rake in millions but mom of 6 and Oscar *winner* Angelina Jolie who has said time and again being an ac-TOR really ain’t that serious y’all, shouldn’t be directed by an amazing woman director in a genre she’s well suited for since action was her forte?

      Come on now sis.

      • Patty says:

I think it’s a terrible idea because I can think of at least four other actresses who I would rather see get an opportunity like this and who think would be amazing. Sorry to burst your bubble but it hasn’t nothing to do with Angelina being a mom.

    • Linda says:

      @Patty
      I agree it’s a terrible idea.

  13. Case says:

A woman-led and woman-directed Marvel film in an era headed by Captain Marvel? Heck yeah.

    • Elisa says:

YES! I’m here for it. I saw Captain Marvel with my niece 2 weeks ago and loved it. Coincidently, she had to write an essay for school afterwards and invent a superhero and when I asked her whether it was a male or female one she said: female, of course. 🙂

  14. Valiantly Varnished says:

I’m PUMPED for this. Hopefully the talks and negotiations go well and this goes forward. Angelina in a Marvel film? HELL yes.

  15. Zut alors says:

Angie’s got six children to house, feed, clothe and pay for college. Get that Marvel money, gurl. It doesn’t mean she can’t take other meatier roles in between those gigs.

  16. Sportlady20 says:

Yay! I love her, I’m ignoring the hate, everyone is entitled to their opinions, as am I.

  17. Sidewithkids says:

I’m so proud of her. Brad stans are prob pissing on themselves right now. Lol. How many times did they say she was done (in every way imagined). All the hate on her tho just for choosing happiness over him. As I’ve always said, Angie’s winning. If I get into the business I would want to meet her and be on her team. She’s smart and she moves in silence, which is the best way to move when you’re making BIG $$ DEALS.

    • pria says:

Thank you @sidewithkids, this ^^ all day.

So glad she’s happy and working – bet the kids love it!

..and Omg she’s wearing jeans! Black, but they are jeans.

  18. Sidewithkids says:

1st lady (of Disney/Marvel) sounds good to me.

  19. Lindy says:

Can we please stop with the superhero movies already? Do. Not. Care. At. All.

  20. OriginalCarol says:

Not that it’s a competition by any means but as comparison goes, Jolie is leaving Pitt in the dust, literally. She gets everything that counts i.e her beloved kids, a thriving career and meaningful humanitarian projects. And what does he have since they called it quits? A sagging career as an old fading actor and having to prostitude himself to selling stupid ads. Guess in order to survive in HW, he would have to continue to be in a great ensemble with other mega stars. By himself, his movies will flop as seen in recent years. Like he said he won the lottery with having his family but didn’t know how to hold on to it. Too late for regrets eh. Karma is a bitch y’all.

    • Rosalee says:

The awarding winning production company Plan B is owned by Pitt. Plan B has produced If Beale Street Could Talk, The Big Short, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Departed, Kick Ass, twelve years a slave..and so on and so on…not that I am a Pitt defender but his production company kicks ass in award winning films.

      • Hmmm says:

He had very little to do with those movies just like his make it right foundation. .. it’s in name only. A critic actually recently schooled some of his fans about that when vice was up for awards. LoL

      • OriginalCarol says:

As I said he’s good in an ensemble. Plan B is as good as it is due his partnership with the other two good persons. If one pays close attention, in the last few years, Pitt was pretty much served in name only as evidenced by his credentials as an executive producer on those award winning films you mentioned. He hardly spent much time on these films. Just because he came out during the awards season to lend his name in support doesn’t mean he worked on them, lol.

    • Hmmm says:

I couldn’t agree with you more original carol. He said it once in an interview… when you’re on your deathbed is he going to be clutching his dvd’s Or hoping his kids would show up. Smdh.

Anyway, his hit pieces in Page666 and other tabloids were wrong. Angie is thriving and soaring as I knew she would as soon as she got out of his abusive clutches.

Angie is also producing most of the movies she’s starring in, too. So yay!! She had a production company before she ever met her abusive ex but rarely did much with it. It’s picking up steam now.

  21. Xilco8 says:

I haven’t seen any of these comic book type films as I have never been interested in them, but I’m a long time Angelina Jolie fan so I will watch her in anything she does. In my opinion she’s one fantastic lady and I enjoy her films.

  22. Patty says:

For some of us, it hasn’t nothing to do with Angelina’s personal life. There are just other actresses that I believe are better suited and who’d love to see in this movie. Eva Green would actually be at the top of my list, along with Lupita, Doona Bae, Nathalie Emmanuel, Gugu. And that’s just my top five! Also, it’s a Marvel movie so it’s not like they need a big name to headline the film; it’s going to make a couple of hundred million either way.

    • Hmm says:

Well, too bad patty. Angelina will sign it if she wants it and you will deal. Go watch something else if you don’t like it.

    • Hmm says:

Well, too bad patty. Angelina will sign it if she wants it and you will deal. Go watch something else starring those actresses if you don’t like it.

Btw, Chiwetel and Angelina are besties. 😍

    • OriginalCarol says:

Wrong. Unlike the likes of the Avengers and Spider-Man, the Eternals is a lesser known property so MCU needs someone like Jolie and her star power to generate big interest to kick it in gear and get going. None of your top five actresses can do the job. Pardon me but they’re only as good as in supporting roles for this type of big budget projects. Jolie is in a league of her own. She is the only female that can compete with the big boys when it comes to action films. ‘Nuff said.
