Stevie Nicks thought Harry Styles was in NSYNC during their Hall of Fame gig

Stevie Nicks was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist last Friday. This is her second induction. Her first was as a member of Fleetwood Mac. During her performance, Harry Styles filled in for the late Tom Petty on the song Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around. When asked backstage how she came to ask him to fill in, Stevie explained that’s she’s known Harry for many ears and that he really impressed her… as a member of NSYNC. Oops!

Nicks told reporters:

We met quite a long time ago, actually. What I really loved about Harry was that when he decided to make a solo record, from NYSNC, he made, he chose to make… NSYNC. Sorry, not NSYNC. Sorry. I’m never going to live that down, I know. One. Direction. I liked One Direction, too. Anyway, when Harry decided to make a record, he could have gone one of two ways: he could have made a really serious Pop record, which would have been less a risk. Or he could make a rock and roll record and take a risk. And he did.

As Stevie mentioned she isn’t going to live this down. Obviously, she just misspoke and didn’t think he was actually a member of NSYNC, but it’s more fun to point out how interchangeable the boy bands are. Se could shuffle them like a deck of cards and whatever five end up on stage would still sound pretty much the same. Although I’ll bet Harry won’t give her grief for it. First of all, he just filled in for Tom Petty on one of Stevie’s most famous songs, he was probably still so amped up from that he didn’t even catch her mistake. Secondly, I’m sure Harry would love to be connected with NSYNC. He likely took it as a compliment.

What’s more noteworthy than Stevie giving Harry Styles back to the wrong band, is that she is the first woman to ever have been inducted twice. 22 men have but she’s the first woman. Both Stevie and Janet Jackson, who was inducted (finally!) during the ceremony as well, alluded to the fact that the RRHoF needs to wake up and start recognizing female artists. During her speech, Stevie acknowledged there are a lot of women worthy and hopefully she’s forging the path, “I know there is somebody out there who will be able to do it. What I am doing is opening up the door for other women.”

Gypsy Queen! I love, and will always love, Stevie Nicks. She’s a goddess among men.

    • Megan says:

I saw Fleetwood Mac a few weeks ago and Stevie was amazing.

      • H says:

I saw Fleetwood Mac in New Orleans last month and dear Lord Stevie is still amazing. I took my 17 year old with me because I said you have to in this lifetime see Stevie twirl and sing Gold Dust Woman. Kid now knows all the songs from the Rumors album. My job as a parent is complete.

      • Marianne says:

I saw them in Buffalo a few days ago and Fleetwood Mac was great. I did think she was having trouble holding her notes though and I simply do not get the appeal of Gold Dust Woman. It was my least favourite of the songs. That said, from everything I can tell, she’s a wonderful person and the concert was good. Very glad she’s been inducted twice.

    • petee says:

They hired Lindsay but it was Stevie who really made that band as famous as they are.She just enchanted everyone and everything she touched.

  2. FHMom says:

Stevie is a rock goddess. Why should she care about Harry Styles’ former band?

    • Erinn says:

I mean, I agree she’s in a league that not many people are in. But my god, how embarrassing. She at least caught it quickly – but when you’re doing a speech about/introducing someone it looks really bad when you mess up their band. Especially when 1D was HUGE and NSYNC hasn’t been a thing for AGES.

    • Stubbylove says:

Exactly. Who give a shit about Harry Styles and what forgettable boy band he was in. Stevie is a goddess – she can do no wrong. Saw Fleetwood Mac in Sioux Falls a couple months back – I knew I might be emotional seeing her – I literally cried when she sang. Tears rolling down my cheeks. There truly is something mystical and magical about her.

      • anon says:

She actually cares. She loves him very much and she speaks so highly of him. She chose him to present her award,

      • Nicki says:

Oh, Stevie cares. She talked about him that he’s her and Mick’s adoptive son and she has chosen him as presenter for her Rock&Roll Hall of Fame induction and as performer for Musicares Persons of the Year event in 2018.

  3. Riemc526 says:

Sorry, pet peeve of mine… just wanted to point out that NSYNC is spelled wrong in the heading and in the quote from Stevie Nicks. Not sure if it’s intentional or not. 😬

  4. Lolly says:

Omg his hair in that photo is awful. I find Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac so overrated, but I can’t believe it took to 2019 to have the first woman inducted twice. I mean, I can believe it, but wtf.

  5. Daisy says:

Ugh I adore Stevie, she’s such an icon. I loved their duet, they sounded great together. Imagine the honor of singing that song with Stevie herself. Also she clearly likes him a lot, I remember during an interview for Rolling Stone she said Harry Styles is her and Mick Fleetwood’s “love child”.
Btw Harry’s speech for her and Janelle Monáe’s for Janet Jackson were my favorites of the night.
PS: can’t belive only now a woman was inducted twice while 22 (!!!!) men had the honor. And Eric Clapton was inducted three times.

  6. Jen says:

I love her!!! She looks great, but can we talk about what Harry’s wearing? That suit with those shoes and an almost shirt? GAH

  7. MMRB says:

She is amazing – a legend and god love her for still rocking the platform boots.

    • Mia says:

I always wished she came out with a clothing and shoe line. It’s never to late. I wanted access to her closets.

  8. Becks1 says:

I love her. She’s amazing. I loved her Behind the Music on VH1 (is that still a thing?) where she mentioned all the mistakes she has made in her life, and how she talks about them to the younger people in her life, because “let me be the one to have made the mistake. Don’t you make it too.” And she must be an incredible person because she has kept people around her for decades. Sharon Celani was trying to make it as a singer and then became Stevie’s back up singer, and that’s what she is to this day. her other backup singer married Stevie’s brother. And Mike Campbell and Stevie have been close for decades.

Speaking of, I saw Fleetwood Mac a few weeks ago – third row!!! and they were incredible. Mike Campbell is an amazing guitarist and I highly recommend catching a performance if you can.

  9. Latoya says:

Stevie is magic. What a woman. She did her own thing for years, stayed (mostly) a single woman (with many the dalliances of her choosing) and yes she still stayed a girls girl.

She and Christine Mcvie were the true love story of Fleetwood Mac. No jealousy, just respect for what the other brought to the band. Always supportive and comforting to each other in what could be a horribly sexist and male dominating environment. This is what we all need to be talking about.. Not stupid feuds between Kim K and Taylor Swift.

And Stevie certainly wasn’t perfect but who is? She’s lived a very singular life and I would listen to her talk about it for hours. And wow she looks amazing at 70.

    • Valerie says:

So true about her and Chris! It’s such an unlikely friendship, too, with Chris being as grounded and practical as she is. I guess they balance each other out. Have always loved both of them. 🙂

      • Becks1 says:

@Valerie – have you seen them on their current tour? The last song is one by Stevie and Christine and it brought tears to my eyes, I thought for sure they would do Songbird but it was a new one and the two of them sang together at the microphone.

  10. Valerie says:

lol, I thought it was pretty funny, especially the way she corrected herself. I will always love Stevie and FM’s music (as a band and a solo act), but their latest drama is just too eye-rolly. They’re all in their 70s. There has to be more to the story than what’s being told; of course, I’d believe that Stevie is petty enough to have Lindsey kicked out because he wasn’t paying enough attention to her at the MusiCares benefit.

    • outoftheshadows says:

Or Lindsey was petty enough to publicly disrespect her.

    • H says:

Or maybe she just doesn’t want to be around her ex who abused her for years? Read Mick Fleetwood’s autobiography. He spells it out in excruciating detail how horrible Lindsey was to Stevie.

      • Valerie says:

His recent one? I haven’t read that, actually. I’m surprised that he’d be so candid while Lindsey was still in the band. Not doubting its veracity, I just would’ve expected LB to refute everything.

  11. Nancypants says:

Her voice isn’t as solid as it used to be and I’m aging myself but Fleetwood Mac was the first concert I ever attended.
It was in Tulsa and the Rumours album was huge at the time.
A bunch of us went together and it was a great concert but I was sooo jealous!
All the boys were drooling over her and I was all, “SHE’S LIKE 30!!!!”

I have always loved her voice…that gravelly kind of thing like Bob Seger.
Go Your Own Way, Stand back, stand back! White Wing Dove Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around and so on.
I think she was better without the others.

  12. Sesame says:

Harry’s aging like milk :’( (i’m so sad! He usef to look so good). Also – given that she’s the only woman to have been inducted twice… would have been a great nod if Christine McVie or another woman had introduced her.
