What are the odds-on betting-favorite names for Meghan & Harry’s baby?

The Duke And Duchess Of Sussex Attend A Commonwealth Day Youth Event At Canada House

I’ve been so thoroughly warped by the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancies and deliveries that I keep thinking “maybe we have it completely wrong for Meghan’s due date.” Kensington Palace tended to give the unofficial nod to reporters that Kate’s due dates were earlier (by weeks, often times) than they actually were. The press around Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is that she’ll be giving birth mid-April or late April. What if that’s wrong? I don’t know. But I’m just not getting a vibe that it’s happening this week. Which leaves us time to talk about whether Polo Baby is a boy or a girl, and what we’ll be calling Polo Baby. And because gambling on these things is widely permitted, what does the betting public believe?

Popular British bookmaker William Hill has just revealed that the latest odds have been placed at 8-11 that Meghan and Prince Harry will be having a girl, due to a recent influx of betting activity. Ever since her baby shower, where an Instagram story showcasing the pink- and pastel-colored dessert spread made the rounds, it’s been speculated that Meghan had let her friends know she was having a girl. And now the wagers have seemingly come in with a similar prediction. “We’re still taking bets on gender but it’s quite a random one. Currently as it stands, we are 8-11 a girl, even money a boy,” William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said.“ So, you know, the betting is suggesting there’s a great, great chance that it’s a girl.”

Additionally, per the Express, Adams said that there have been an increased number of bets on a specific name, as well. Diana has become one of the top picks for the name of the child, which of course would serve as a tribute to Harry’s late mother. Adams said, “At the top of the betting here is Diana at 10-1, red hot favourite. No great surprises there, obviously all the connections are there.” (Also a popular bet is the name Victoria, the name of Harry’s great-great-great grandmother, which shares the same odds to Diana, at 10-1.)

There are a few other names in the mix, as well: Alice and Isabella (both at 12-1 odds), and Alexandra, Elizabeth and Grace (at 16-1). If it does end up being a boy, Arthur is the current favorite (4-1), with Edward, James, and Phillip close behind. If you’re looking for a slightly more wild bet, placing money on twins could be the wager for you, as the odds for that happening are 10-1.

[From Vanity Fair]

I was feeling “girl” for Polo Baby in the early months, but I’ve been vibing on the idea that Polo Baby could be a boy for about two months now. I don’t know why I changed my mind on that, but it’s just my gut talking (my gut has been wrong before). If Polo Baby is a girl, then they won’t give her Diana as a first name. A middle name, for sure. But Diana as a first name is too much for any of Diana’s granddaughters. Too much history, too much tragedy. I also doubt Victoria is really in the mix because… Meghan would veto it. I could definitely see Alice or Grace though. If it’s a boy, then… not Philip, not Arthur, not Edward, but maybe James (although the Wessexes have a son named James, so probably not). I could also see John/Jonathan, Alexander or Gabriel. Come on, Gabe Sussex? That’s a great name!

    Marco? Polo?

    • Kaiser says:

      Albert Polo Arthur

    • Jen says:

How bought Spencer to honor Diana for boy or girl

      • Kaiser says:

        Spencer Polo Arthur

      • Erinn says:

I actually like that – a more subtle nod. And I’ve just in my head convinced myself that this child’s name is genuinely Polo. It’s going to be so strange to hear it’s actual name haha.

      • Becks1 says:

@erinn – right? spencer Polo Arthur actually sounds normal to me now, lolol

      • Bohemian Angel says:

Spencer is Pippa’s brother in law and a known reality star here. So no.

    • Sunnee says:

I was going to say Marco. I also like Nicholas, Christian and Jude. Since HM approved Zara maybe she’ll approve less traditional royal names.
If a girl I hope she chooses Lily, Rose or something out of the box. Diana would be a sweet tribute but a burden, I think.

      • maisie says:

Sincerely hope Megan insists on a stupid vulgar American name like Amber or Tiffany or “Skylar” (actual spelling: Schulyer). Stick it to ’em where they live, kid.

Kidding aside, Alexandra or straight Diane are good for a girl; James or John for a boy.

  2. Dana marie says:

    I think boy too.
James will be one of the names.

  3. Kittycat says:

    Baby names!

    No title/Lady/Princess –

    Athena Doris Elizabeth
    Madeline Diana Doris
    Angela Doris Diana

    No title/Lord/Prince –

    Philip Charles Henry
    Marcus Phillip Henry
    Malcolm Philip Charles

  4. Claire says:

I would love Rosa for a girl. It works on so many levels.

  5. Alexandria says:

    Alexander James!

In my culture they say if you’re not glowing, you’re carrying a girl because the girl is borrowing or stealing your beauty. So I’m with boy lol.

    • Betsy says:

People always said that to me since I looked like hammered sh!t when I was pregnant. Three boys.

    • erni says:

In my culture glowing means baby girl 🙂
Also, alexander or alexandra sussex is too mouthful.
      Alex Sussex?

  6. Erinn says:

Do not like Gabe Sussex at all.

I also find it kind of funny that SO many people genuinely think it’d be Diana. I can’t see them being so cruel as to put the child through that level of comparison right out of the gate. It’d be awful. And I think it’s a lot of wishful thinking coming from the people who have made Diana out to be a Saint over the years. There are a lot of women OBSESSED with her to the point where they’ve really glossed over some of her negative behavior, and I can’t imagine that’s something that would be great for a child to grow up with. There will ALWAYS be comparisons if it is a girl, so no need to give her Diana as a first name.

I kind of suspect that neither grandmother will be part of the childs name. If they’re buddies with the Clooney’s I don’t see them going with Alexander (that was the son’s name, right?). I could kind of see a Victoria called Tori. Isabelle/Isabella is such an overused name (at least around me) I don’t know that they’d go that route. I think they’re going to lean towards traditional, but still kind of cool. Maybe something like Rose, Alexandra, Eleanor, Violet, Helena. Daniel, Nathaniel, Theodore, Fletcher, Victor for a boy. Honestly, who knows, though. I can’t see them using something TOO trendy, but also not something completely out of left field.

  7. Flying fish says:

The baby’s name will begin with an M.

  8. lana86 says:

For sure not Victoria. Because the actress playing queen Victoria, Jenna Coleman, was approached by Harry , then chose Tom Hughes instead.

  9. DC Cliche says:

I’ve been liking Theodore or Theodora for months now. Would be a nice nod to Doria without being crazy, and Theo and Thea are super cute kids names.

Could also see a D for the grandmas. My personal favorite is Daniel or Davinia but Davinia seems a little radical. I dunno, I don’t think we’re getting traditional royal name. I have thought the boys had an agreement to ‘leave’ Philip for Harry since he and Prince P are close but not sure I would name a baby that this close to Prince Philip passing.

    • notasugarhere says:

It isn’t that radical. HRH Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have a daughter Davina, Lady Davina (Windsor) Lewis. I don’t know if she’ll go back to Windsor as a last name since they divorced last year.

    • Malificent says:

That’s what I think — they will do a “D” name for both grandmothers — especially if it’s a girl. I’m thinking something non-royal, but not too out there — Daisy or Daphne?

  10. line says:

Alice would be a good choice , because it’s was a traditional name
but it’s still modern and then it also would be a tribute to the mother of Prince Philip Alice of Battenberg. Diana would be a horrible gift to make because if the baby was a girl, she will be always comparated to Diana, give is name would be a double punishment.

    If it’s a girl:
    – Alice
    – Eleonor
    – Malthilde
    – Cassandra
    – Alicia
    – Nathalie
    – Rose

    if it’s a boy:
    – David
    -Christian
    – James
    -Alexandre
    – Nathan

  11. Coz' says:

I was thinking Frances for a girl, since it was Diana’s middle name (I think!) and I find the name beautiful and timeless. But it was Diana’s mother name and their relationship was strained.
Also I love Spencer as a name for a girl but I doubt Charles and the queen would let that happens.

    • notasugarhere says:

Given how Earl Spencer abandoned his older sister and made money off her belongings for two decades after her death? I cannot see Harry wanting that name for any of their children.

  12. Valiantly Varnished says:

Gabriel is one of my secret baby names so I vot for that one if it’s a boy. I actually don’t think they will go for a super traditional royal name. They don’t have to. Their child will be what 12th in line for the throne? I have a feeling their kid will have a modern but not overly unique name. Kind of like Zara Tindall.

    • raindrop says:

I agree. Their child(ren) will be pretty far down on the heir-to-the-throne list, so they don’t need to operate under the naming restrictions Kate and William have. They don’t have to stick to very classic, traditional names like George or Charlotte. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see a more unusual (though still solidly mainstream) name for Polo Baby. This kid won’t be an Apple or a Pilot Inspektor, but something a little “different” like Zara? That seems likely.

    • Lady D says:

I learned on this site that there is an approved list of names the heir can choose from when naming their child. Harry being heir-adjacent must also follow this list of names, just in case lazy-arse William decides to quit the job. Andrew as heir after Charles (pre-Wills) would also follow this list of names.

    • Tina says:

Everyone has an opinion about royal and royal-adjacent baby names. A distinguished Scottish man of my acquaintance approved of Peter and Autumn’s choice of Isla for their second daughter, but was very sniffy about Savannah. I’m thinking Violet for a girl, not sure about a boy.

  13. BlueSky says:

@Kaiser, It’s so funny that you posted this story because I had the most bizarre dream about this last night (darn black bean burger!). I dreamt that she told me and the other women in the room she was having a girl and they were considering the name “Cynthia” 😂

    • Sunnee says:

A few weeks ago I dreamt I was at the birth that she named her baby girl Fleur. I think I dreamt that because I had recently read that Doria always called Meg “Flower”

  14. Becks1 says:

Please note that I am always always wrong about these things, so basically the opposite of whatever I say will happen, haha.

At a first glance I say no to Alexander and Arthur – the former is one of George’s names, Arthur is one of Louis’ names – but that may not matter one iota in the royal family, and Will and Kate did re-use one of George’s names for Louis, so I am overall reluctant to write off Alexander completely and think it may stand a good chance. I do not think it will be Arthur. That is Pippa’s boy, and again while that may not matter, I can see it making just enough of a difference to tip the scale away from Arthur.

Names I expect to see used:
    Philip
Spencer (neither as the first name)
Charles (prob not as first name, but in the mix)
Albert (again not as first name, but in the mix, one of Harry’s names and obviously the Queen’s father’s name, or what he went by).
    Henry
    Alice
    Victoria
    Elizabeth
Diana (I could see them using it as a middle name like Will and Kate did, would highly doubt it would be the first name)
Frances (could be a nod to Diana)
    Mary

Names I don’t expect to see:
David (yes one of Harry’s names, but such a strong connotation with the Duke of Windsor, and considering Harry married a divorced American woman, I think they will veer away from that.)
    Edward, Andrew, Peter, James

I don’t see them veering totally away from the traditional royal names, but I think they will go for one that is more “in” today (which is why I think Alice has a good shot.) the phillips’ kids are all more modern/trendy names, but none of them are titled (and I presume this child will at least be a lord/lady, if not a prince/ss from the start.)

Like I said, I’m so bad at this, lol.

    • maisie says:

Ooh, Mary. That would be a nod to the late Queen Mother. Oh, and no one’s mentioned Albert. Stuffy, but traditional.

  15. salmah says:

I can only think of nicely majestic girls names, so:

    Celestine
    Matilda
    Rosamund
    Alicia

Yesterday, sitting in my car, I saw a woman who looked identical, facially, to Meghan but she was about 6ft tall and pale. For a second I thought it was her, but the height thing, the pale thing and that she also wasn’t pregnant put paid to that. Shame! It would have been my first celeb sighting and it would have been a good one to start off with!

  16. Toot says:

I like Victoria for a girl and Alexander for a boy.

  17. NIa says:

I should have bet on Charlotte because I had a feeling.
I am going with Alice Doria or Victoria Elizabeth or Alice Victoria

  18. Bohemian Angel says:

    Girl; Lavinia Frances
Boy; would have said Louis but that’s taken.
    That’s it.

  19. SequinedHeart says:

    Victoria Doria! 😂

  20. Peg says:

Thomas or Thomasina, LOL the odds on that would be through the roof.
Harry may go for an African name, and Meghan probably had a list of names from the age of 12.

    • Wisca says:

An African name would be awesome, but Meghan can’t rock her curls, so I doubt it.

  21. Royalwatcher says:

    Alice Frances (nod to Diana)
Dorian Charles, but will be called Charlie (nod to Doria and Charles)

  22. Yawn says:

I expect to see Frances, I expect to see Loyce, as they can go either way. I would be unsurprised if we see William, tbh.

    Frances Henry William
    Elizabeth Frances Loyce

  23. Anastasia says:

I’ve felt this entire time that she’s having a girl.

    I think:

    Alice
    Lily
    Rose
some form of Doria in there in the middle
    Alexandra
    Mary
(the two above are QEII’s middle names)

I don’t think any form of Elizabeth or Victoria will be used (one of Eugenie’s middle names is Victoria)

  24. Ali says:

    Suri Sussex

  25. TheHeat says:

Well, you can be sure that it won’t be Samantha or Thomas!!!

  26. Molly says:

Aside from the crippling history, Diana just isn’t a great name. It’s an 80s MOM NAME. I’m around the same age as Meghan, and everyone’s mom growing up had names like Linda, Diane, Debbie, or Cathy. Diana isn’t even cute and retro. It’s the Makenzie of 20 years from now. Meghan isn’t naming her baby after anyone’s mom. Even her husband.

    • Ali says:

Artemis then if Diana has too much baggage.

    • Zia says:

I quite disagree about the whole reference to Diana being an 80’s Mom name. Diana is a powerful name…She is goddess of the hunt and protector of women and children… she was a MOON GODDESS! I mean… Diana is MAJOR and nobody should think that they will not want to honor his mother. i believe they will. They should.

  27. Loretta says:

    I would love Grace.

  28. Nola says:

Confused American question. Why would the surname be Sussex? I thought the official surname of the BRF was Windsor-Mountbatten? Even though Prince Harry is in and of itself a sufficient identifier, I thought he did have a formal surname..?

    • paddingtonjr says:

It is a bit confusing. TQ doesn’t use a last name, but the rest of the family needed a last name for official documents (school, military, etc.). So, when TQ and PP married, since PP had gone by Philip Mountbatten and his mother was from the House of Battenburg, later Mountbatten, they decided on “Mountbatten-Windsor”. However, as the sons grew up and were given their their own titles, their families used the region for a last name. So Prince Harry and Prince William were called “Harry Wales” and “William Wales” in school and the military. Prince George and Princess Charlotte are known as “George Cambridge” and “Charlotte Cambridge.” It’s not really a formal surname in the sense that we normally think of surnames, but it is a way of identifying them in society and separating them within the family: “The Yorks”, “The Cambridges”, etc.

  29. Digital Unicorn says:

I like Alexandria for a girl and Philip for a boy – I like Arthur but they won’t use it as its Pippa’s sons name. Seems the current RF have been looking for name inspiration in the names of all of Queen Victoria’s children.

    – Louise
    – Beatrice
    – Eugenie

We haven’t seen an Alice, Helena, Arthur, Alfred, Victoria, Leopold or even an Albert as first names.

Am wondering if its a boy if Thomas will feature in the middle names (the royals have several) – either way Thomas will be all over the press mugging for sympathy/attention.

I hope Harry has his love shield (TM Lainey) ready for when the baby comes, as the white Markles are preparing for a media blitz and they WILL attack a baby.

  30. Eyfalia says:

Yes, I would like Gabriel. For a girl I bet mmmmm Michelle Diana. Rose was my big bet before that Turnip Toff mess. Grace is also very nice.

  31. Case says:

They won’t go with anything too stuffy, and will want something that can have a cute nickname, I suspect. For a girl, I like Elizabeth, Alexandra, Grace, or Alice. For a boy I really like Alexander or James.

  32. Zia says:

I think it is a girl because of how she is carrying. Im going for a girl. I would simply adore Alice! I love that name. I always think of a sweet curious girl in Wonderland of course when I say it, and what a rabbit hole it is to be in the Royal Family, so… YES. ALICE!
    Alice Diana Sussex….. ooooh yes!

  33. Ali says:

I don’t think the name, especially if it’s a girl, will be a name that would look like she’s the 4th Cambridge kid.

    Esme, Zelda, Isadora, Tahlia, Isla

  34. Tai says:

I know they tend to use traditional family names so I would like Alice for a girl and John/Jonathan for a boy. But if they go outside the box, Julia for a girl would be so pretty and it dates from Ancient Roman times. I love Spencer for a boy although Spencer Sussex is a bit of a mouthful.

  35. RoyalBlue says:

Well if we can have a Zara and Savannah they are not really strict about the names of those further away from the crown.

I like Camille Elizabeth (after Camilla. Lol. I jest)

    Emily Victoria

  36. Alex says:

I like this Rose guess. Idk why but I feel like it would be an “E” name.

  37. veroS says:

I don’t think Diana will be in the mix, but reading this, I decided that Grace would be very pretty and understated. It’s also fairly modern and would pair well with other names. James or Alexander if it’s a boy. If there’s any names after still living royals (Elizabeth, Philip, Charles) I think they’ll end up middle names. Grace and Elizabeth would pair well in my opinion.

  38. blunt talker says:

I believe this will be a boy also. Then I changed my mind and thought a girl. Well if it is a boy I like Phillip Spencer Windsor. Everybody can call him Spence for a nickname. If a girl I like Victoria Doria Windsor or Victoria Diana Windsor. Possible nicknames Dorie or Vicky.

  39. Ramona Q. says:

If a boy, they should name him Barak and freak everyone the eff out.

  40. Mrs. Smith says:

I think it’s a girl. And I agree with the other commenters that there will be a “D” name for the grandmothers. I love the idea of Theodora, but I also like Dorothy. It’s classic, traditional and unique among the royal family. Dorothy Margaret Alice?

  41. Mary says:

I am old enough to remember the story going around that Diana had wanted to name William “John” after her father but was not allowed to do so because it was deemed “bad luck.” If true, I think it would be a nice way of them to honor Diana by naming a son John.

If a girl, I think they should stick to a name that would not give anyone a chance to throw a hissy fit about propriety or protocol (that kid is going to have enough people gunning for it anyway – I saw the rudest comment on their IG page already about the little one). I think a nice, simple old-fashioned name, not unknown in the aristocratic circle, would be a good choice. For a girl, I love the names Honor, Violet (after the friend that allegedly introduced them), Fleur (because Meghan’s mom calls her Flower) and Rose.

  42. MsIam says:

My vote would be: Gabriel for a boy ( for some reason that name popped into my head, too, lol!) and Genevieve for a girl. Maybe she is having twins! They’d be Gabe and Ginny, lol!
