Melissa Fumero: Andy Samberg will take coffee & cookies out of your hand & eat them

Melissa Fumero plays Amy Santiago on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Much of her time is spent pretending that she’s married to Andy Samberg. So we already have that in common. She also won the guest star lottery when the show made superfan Lin-Manual Miranda Amy’s perfect brother, David. It’s safe to say Melissa’s having a pretty good year. Living the life does come with a downside, as we learned when Melissa chatted with Andy’s good pal, Seth Meyer. Andy’s a cookie stealer! And he takes them right out of your hand. Ain’t no man worth stealing my cookies! (Coffee’s not even in the discussion – I’ll cut you over coffee.)

When Amy and Seth discussed the cookie thievery:

How is it working with Andy Samberg? I think he’s healthier in LA, not being on SNL where were a lot grumpier, hung over a lot. He’s seems green juiced out, right now.
He is, but I really enjoy when he gets grumpy. It’s very similar to how my three-year-old gets grumpy.

This all tracks with my experience
Yeah. But, you know, you just poor yourself some coffee, grab a cookie and just sit near him, and he will eventually take the coffee and eat that cookie from your hand.

He does seem to be communal with food, especially when he doesn’t have any
And he’s always trying to be good and healthy so he doesn’t get sick and takes care of himself, so I really enjoy just like sliding in with five cookies.

Okay, so Andy is not the monster I painted him out to be. Melissa intentionally uses the cookie to bring Andy out of a funk, kind of how I use bacon to cheer my dogs up when I grab my purse but not the dog leash. Seth revealed that Andy is a one-way food-sharer, but I can look past this as well because I happen to be married to such a man. The Professor will ask for a ‘bite’ of my sandwich and somehow fit half of it in his mouth. I’ve started ordering desserts with disclaimers about how much I’m willing to give up to people who claim they “don’t want any.”

So Melissa knows full well what she’s doing. She’s seen the chink in Andy’s armor and she works it to her advantage. She probably learned the trick from Andy’s real-life wife, musician Joanna Newsom, whom I imagine has a drawer filled with Andy treats for when the grumps overtake him. I’m not saying I’m giving up any cookies to pull him out of a funk, but I respect Melissa’s game.

Since we’re already on the subject of Andy Samberg, I’m sure all of us who low-key sweat for this guy saw this photo last week and didn’t know what to do with ourselves:

Yeah, well, you weren’t alone. Many folks lost their cool over it. I’m starting to think I might, in fact, let Andy steal a cookie straight from my hand.

Eh I kind of hate this narrative of women mollycoddling a grumpy man child by offering him treats. He’s a grown ass man and it’s insane to me that we think the idea of his wife or a colleague should have to offer him ‘treats’. Why are we furthering and even applauding this behaviour?!?! Weird.

Can you imagine if this story was about a woman being a brat at work?

    • Skyblue says:

Agreed. I didn’t find this story endearing at all. Sort of grossed me out.

      • Some chick says:

I also agree. Accepting antisocial BS like that leads to worse antisocial BS. Like Louis CK type antisocial BS. It’s all a spectrum!

Get your own damn cookie. You know where they are. You’re not two years old.

Self-important beardy dudes are a dime a dozen. Thank u, next.

    • Gigi La Moore says:

It’s called friendship. I used to work with a man and we both instinctively knew what to do for the other when we were in a mood. For instance, he knew when it was the first of the month when all the reporting was due that I would not be in the mood for the fun and games he liked to play. He would bring me tea, ask his question and leave until the smoke cleared. He wasn’t mollycoddling me, he was being an understanding friend.

Way to cherry-pick, generalize and assume there. Literdlly nothing in your post seems to resemble what I took from the article.

      • Clare says:

@monikak – Good for you, I guess? Shrug.

      • Um says:

Yeah, this sounds like a pretty normal coworker friendship. I have a coworker that bribes me with soda if he needs me to get something done quickly for him, and two others that we have an ongoing snack sharing agreement. Not sure why this offended people so much.

    • Bebe says:

Exactly! Same note as those “cute” memes about how male partners can’t manage to be adults without relying on women. Not adorable at all, actually.

  2. Isa says:

We sound similar. I was grumpy yesterday and my coworker offered me snacks.

The episode with Lin-Manuel Miranda was one of the best episodes I’ve ever seen on any sitcom ever. If Mr. Miranda is not Mr. Perfect in real life, please don’t enlighten me.

    • lucy2 says:

It was! Perfect casting for Amy’s brother.
I also like that they cast her real life husband for the crossword puzzle guy.

I like Andy and he’s cute, but he doesn’t give me “the feels”. Plus his hair this season is an atrocity.

  4. MoopsMarie says:

I love, love, love Andy. He can eat the cookie from my hand any. Time. He. Wants.

  5. Des says:

My favorite Melissa Fumero fact is that her husband is the guy we see at the end of Mariah Carey’s Honey video. Living the life!

    • anony7 says:

Yes, she and her husband David Fumero met when they were both on the ABC soap One Life to Live. She was known as Melissa Gallo back then and when she married him she changed her professional name. Beautiful couple!

  6. Morrissey says:

The header made me mad, but the story was less enraging in context. But having an irritable bowel and having to be super careful about everything I eat or drink, if anyone takes my carefully curated food…death. Don’t get me started on coffee.

  7. Lila says:

Whoa! First time I’ve had the hots for Andy Samberg. I think my first introduction to him was as the loud park ranger on Park and Rec, and while he was hilarious in the role, he wasn’t cute. But the beard and the cute cookie story? Count me in. (Mr. Lila is also a stealth food thief. He eats a lot faster than me, so when his plate is finished, he starts helping me with mine. It’s stinking adorable.)

  8. AMAyson1977 says:

My husband is also That One with dessert: “I don’t want any, order whatever sounds best to you” then it comes and he snarfs more than half of it. At least he always has the good grace to leave me the last bite. @@

Didn’t he, along with Lena Dunham, defend Aurora Perrineau’s rapist, Murray Miller? I believe he tweeted his defense from the Lonely Island account, which is the one appearing in this post.

    • Kebbie says:

I think you are confusing him with Jorma Taccone, who tweeted from his personal account that he’d known Murray for 20 years, and he didn’t think he did it. Then he deleted the tweet and apologized for weighing in at all. Jorma’s wife, Marielle Heller (director of Can You Ever Forgive Me?) also tweeted support, deleted it, and apologized.

To my knowledge, Andy Samberg never said anything about Murray Miller or the allegations.
