Just FYI, I don’t want to spend the day talking about “concentration camps” and whether Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez was correct to refer to the holding pins/crowded makeshift jails at the American border as concentration camps. She was right. Liz Cheney was wrong. History repeats itself. There are refugee crises around the world, and what the Republicans call the “border crisis” is really only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dislocated people trying to find somewhere safe to live. Angelina Jolie has been working on refugee issues since 2001. She’s a special envoy for the UNHCR. She will teach at the London School of Economics. She founded the Global Summit To End Sexual Violence In Conflict. And on and on. So this does not come as a surprise:
Edward Felsenthal, Editor in Chief and CEO of TIME, announced today that Angelina Jolie will join TIME as a Contributing Editor. Writing on a variety of topics, focusing primarily on displacement, conflict and human rights, Jolie’s pieces will appear monthly across TIME’s global platforms.
Jolie’s writing for TIME will draw on her eighteen years working with the UN Refugee Agency. She is the Special Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and has carried out over 60 field missions to refugees, including most recently in Colombia, Peru and Bangladesh.
Her first piece is published Wednesday to coincide with World Refugee Day, and will appear in the July 1, 2019 issue of the magazine, on newsstands Friday. It follows her previous essay for TIME, on the role of women in the peace negotiations in Afghanistan.
Time has already published Angelina’s first contributing-editor piece online – you can read it here. Tomorrow is World Refugee Day (June 20th) and the piece is about the modern history of refugees, from World War II to today, and how refugee crises have been politicized. It’s an interesting and depressing read.
As for Angelina working for Time Magazine now… it’s a natural fit. I know there are people who don’t believe that she writes her own op-eds and speeches, and I believe she probably has help from experts, especially when it comes to fact-checking and historical accuracy, but Angelina has always been a writer – she published her journal back in the day (a journal about her travels to refugee camps) and she’s contributed op-eds to the New York Times, the Washington Post and other serious outlets. I think this is smart.

Definitely Botox; she is almost as smooth as Nicole Kidman…almost. Sunscreen, definitely. I’d also suggest skin-tightening lasers, and anything else that a multi-millionaire can afford to do on a regular basis. I want to know how she keeps a tight jawline.

Hollywood has treated her like crap since the divorce (and during brad putts divorce) but honestly she is too good Hollywood. She is worth >100 crappy A-D list celebrities combined. you know, professors do read a lot of stuff and participate in academic discussions and write a lot of academic stuff and they still go through the moves of writing a BA thesis and a MA thesis and still often a Phd thesis (promotion). some do even do the old fashioned habillitation (PD title). Their publications must endure public scrutiny and criticism by their colleagues.
Their teaching is scrutinized and rated by colleagues and students and others alike whereas Jolie’s latest effort at teaching was rated … ???
And they only become “professor” if they get a professor’s chair/employment at some university due to their academic merits.
I kind of don’t really see that Jolie is putting in this kind of effort. So please call her a Prof. h.c. aka honoris causa because that is what she does at best.

Not necessarily. I work for a famous academic and have a very in depth insight into that world. there are many many professors who are viewed as very much legit/just as legit who have not built their background in academia at all. This is ESPECIALLY true for policy/international affairs/etcetera (and also professional schools). These professors are called “professors of practice” and do not have lower status or lower legitimacy. The idea is that they are sharp minds with extensive or notably brilliant or unique experience in the field who can impart just as much intelligence to students as academics (who for better or worse are) in ivory towers

It’s not about how much “experience” Angelina has had with refugees, it’s about whether she knows how to communicate and delineate and hit all her intended notes perfectly clearly in writing. For this, she is simply unqualified and untrained. I think it’s absurd to make her “contributing editor” when she does not have the specific education for such a position. I have no idea, outside of her fame as an actress, why she was even given this job.

@enike – it’s “won’t”, not “wont”. It’s “self-indulgent”, not “self-indulged”. For someone who uses the wrong words you sure have a high opinion of your own intelligence. AJ is not robotic, she’s is an extremely captivating speaker. People don’t survive 18 years as a UNHCR representative by being stupid. She has received the Citizen of the World Award, the Global Humanitarian Award, spoken at the World Economic Forum, and co-chairs the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict. She has traveled to refugee camps around the world including Darfur, Sierra Leone, Cambodia, Tanzania and Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan. Oh, and by the way she covers all of her own costs while on missions, and shares the same working and living conditions as the UNHCR field staff.
She may not have a bunch of fancy letters after her name but as mj says above, sometimes merit trumps degrees.

I almost spat out my morning coffee when I read her talking about international law (refugees). (I’m a lawyer.) She promoted an illegal war in Iraq. Was right there posing for pics with Petraeus to help sell the surge. I have no doubt she thinks she’s doing the right thing but she’s not a well informed person at all and lacks critical thinking skills. Her very long history of promoting regime changes, preemptive strikes (illegal) on humanitarian grounds (the norm is closer to military action for defence, self-protection), and intervening in other countries and trampling on their sovereignty is disturbing and incongruent to humanitarianism. She seems to be unconsciously drawn to wars and conflict when she should be promoting peace. Works with people like McCain, Hague, and even Jens Stoltenberg (head of NATO) to sell their hawkish worldviews. This is not what a humanitarian does. Her stance on military interventionism (Libya, Syria, the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan) is very well established. She also promotes harsh sanctions and anyone without vested interests will tell you they never work (and in fact inflict more suffering on innocent civilians without troubling the dictators or strongmen), just like military interventionism makes things far, far, far worse in 99.99% of cases (Sierra Leone being one of the very, very few exceptions), not to mention the casualties and destruction of infrastructure that makes it usually hard to impossible to rebuild. She reminds me of those giddy 1st year IR students who believe they’re super worldly but have a very superficial understanding of how the world works. In short, the ideologies she’s sold for the past decade or more are actually dangerous and harmful to humanitarian outcomes.
This is one productive woman.

Compared to all the younger celebrities and pop stars who need to change their look, change their image with every new song or album, simply as a way to advertise. It’s so fake. It’s just so weird when people try to undercut a celeb’s success by saying that they “didn’t actually do any of the work they got other people to do it for them.” I’ve only ever seen this happen to women tbh, and the accompanying comment is always something about how much of an intellectual lightweight they OBVIOUSLY are, because they didn’t finish [insert level of school acceptable to commentator here], so OF COURSE they didn’t do anY of their own work, they’re just taking the credit of other hard working people and putting their name on it.
Even if Angelina DID have a lot of input into her writing–so what? Published authors and journalists have editors and fact checkers who put their stories through the ringer to make sure that everything is dotted and crossed. All work is collaborative, and it rests on the countless hours groups of people put into it to make sure that it’s meeting a particular standard. Just because Angelina Jolie has access to folks who will fact check her work, will make sure that the details are correct, doesn’t take away the strength of her ideas. Even Obama had speechwriters for crying out loud. Why is this a detriment when it’s a female celebrity?

No one who helped promote illegal wars like Iraq, Libya, and much more – which she has most definitely done – should be given a platform as a humanitarian. Her well-established stance is more appropriate to a politician or neocon/demcon think-tanker who has a specific take on the US’s role in the world or a mandate of US foreign policy to mould the world to its vision – not humanitarianism. The biggest irony is that the policies she sells actually create refugee crises, in addition to empowering terrorists (dangerous power vaccum and weapons flooding everywhere from Libya’s regime change for example), killing millions of innocent civilians, and decimating countries to the extent it’s hard to impossible to ever “rebuild and bring freedom and democracy,” which of course is always the widely stated goal going in.

She’s suppose to remain neutral, she can’t vocialize her political affiliation just like everyone who works for UNHCR, but she has vocalized many times the need for humanity, democracy, diplomacy, justice and truth. So, quit lying about her supporting wars that she does not.

@fauxfur, thanks for the articles. These articles show she isn’t advocating war, but advocating for driving out the bad forces that are in these countries. In working w/ NATO now, she’s trying to show they have the power to help and/or prevent the hurt that is happening. Her initiatives are about being forceful in helping women not be used as weapons of war and getting aid to refugees. It may be necessary to drive out the forces that arent doing that. Seems to me, she’s saying we can’t just leave the countries w/o implementing some type of relief/aid/plan. She’s not saying war is good. The US especially mainly goes into countries and gets what they want nothing else. She’s saying if you are going in, you could do so much more to help and not hurt. Take Syria, the US is there, the forces are needed but not in the way they are using them. The forces could be used in better ways to help not hurt. That’s what she’s trying to say/implement, which is true. She’s not about starting wars.

This cannot excluded from the very definition of starting a war just because there might be some form of pre-existing conflict (in which the party pursuing “humanitarian” intervention isn’t yet involved). New purpose/goal, new army, new weapons, entering a sovereign state or territory over which said party has no claim, no imminent threat to the new party, etc.

Absolutely nothing ambiguous about her stance on starting (typically illegal) “humanitarian” wars. She’s been a vocal advocate of them for a very long time. (And I don’t car for Brad Pitt at all.)
This is work Angie has been doing for 18 years. How long is college usually? 4? Lol. I believe she’s plenty equipped and educated on the ideas to write about them. She is a dame and she’s is a professor. That’s not a quip, that’s the truth. Also, why can’t she feel important and proud? She should, she’s accomplished a lot at her age. She’s amazing and she’s earned the right to feel amazing. I find her to be like a basketball player that gets booed when he goes to another city to play. He drops 50 on them and has the best game of his life. Angie thrives in the face of the hate which isn’t real media by the way, it’s tabloid media and social media by people who are stans and/or trolls. She uses it to her advantage. She uses them better than they use her. Look at these Disney deals. It’s remarkable to see b/c I don’t know if any other star has ever done that like she has, so well. Keep doing what you do, Angie. I am concerned about her political advisors she employs. They are from the right wing Tory Party in the UK. She seems to be close to the unelected house of lords member Baroness Arminka Helic. This reflects on her and the advice she is given regarding politics. The Tory party are very hostile to immigrants and refugees. The political landscape is changing in politics and is challenging the current status quo, yet I feel she appears to be rather conservative in her politics and is out of touch. I did read somewhere that she likes Ayn Rand – I hope this is not true. No serious academic takes Ayn Rand seriously. Her politics needs to be questioned and critiqued.
