Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie’s Chateau Miraval rosé is still breaking records

For the eleven years they were together, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt collaborated on many things. Some of those collabs were great: their six kids, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, A Mighty Heart, various charitable work. Some of those collabs were not so great: By the Sea, and whatever happened on that plane in 2016. But perhaps their greatest material collaboration may be something that started as a “what the hell” vanity project. Back in 2006, they leased and then bought the Chateau Miraval in the south of France. Even through the years of contentious divorce, they still own the property and they both visit it often enough. Several years before everything went to hell, they decided to use Miraval for what its original intention: as a vineyard/winery. I feel like this was mostly Brad too – they studied up and figured out that they were going to make a good rosé. The Miraval rosé has become somewhat legendary in wine-snob circles, due to the limited quantities and the great reviews across the board. And now a record-breaking wine is Brangelina’s biggest legacy as a couple.

Three grand is pocket change for folks like Provençal vignerons Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. But it’s just become a significant figure in the rosé orbit they inhabit: €2,600 is how much a magnum of Muse de Miraval, a new prestige cuvée from the Côtes de Provence estate owned by the (onetime) couple, fetched at auction last month—a new record for still rosé.

The new rosé made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, and the sale benefits the GoodPlanet Foundation, but there was plenty of time and toil behind the splashy launch: The 2018 Muse is the first wine off the line at a brand-new winery on the Château Miraval property, and a big blush statement from winemaker Marc Perrin. His family, of Château de Beaucastel fame, co-owns Miraval with Pitt and Jolie.

“The idea for us with this wine is to show that great rosé can be as great as great white or great red,” Perrin told Unfiltered. “It can evolve with time and become extremely complex. That’s why we decided to bottle it in magnums so that people try to keep it as [long] as possible.” Outside the auction world, retailers had priced the wine at about $290 per mag.

Long before its red-carpet debut, Muse was a soil study: Perrin eventually selected two of the best and oldest parcels of Grenache and Rolle (Vermentino) on the property’s 2,500 acres for the cuvée. And where the standard Miraval bottlings are sent to the Perrin facility up in the Rhône for élevage, Muse is crushed, fermented and aged in a new winery on the Miraval property; 2018 was the inaugural vintage. The cellar has been equipped with egg-shaped concrete tanks, which, Perrin explained, is a return to the old.

Unfortunately, all 1,700 magnums of the new juice have sold out on the winery’s end—hopefully not a portent of rosé shortages to come.

This little side project has turned out to be extremely cool – the Miraval rosé is now one of the most sought-after and well-liked rosés in the world. Is it the combination of old winemaking technology combined with good, fertile soil? Is it because Brad and Angelina really don’t seem to do much and they still get to stamp “Chateau Miraval” on the bottles? I don’t know enough about wine to tell you. When I used to drink, I did enjoy a cheap rosé though, and I would love to try a glass of the fancy sh-t.

My God, they are so happy in the last photo <3

  2. Digital Unicorn says:

I have had it and can confirm it is VERY nice Rose wine – am not a massive fan of Rose (I prefer red). You can buy it for about £20 a bottle from Wholefoods and most quality wine stockists (am sure I saw it in M&S, I have seen it in Waitrose) but its more expensive if you buy in a restaurant.

    • a reader says:

I’ve had it as well. I’m not a fan of rose in general but it was drinkable. Not my favorite, not my least favorite either.

And it can be bought at Costco for roughly $30.

      • bros says:

i have also had it. it’s not great in my opinion. it finishes really candyish and almost artificially. it’s drinkable, but I wouldnt go seeking it out to buy again.

    • sunny says:

It is a good quality Rose. In Canada(in Ontario) it can be bought at the LCBO.

    • whatWHAT? says:

yeah, I’m not much of a rose fan at all, and I do like theirs…I think because it’s not as sweet as the other roses I’ve tried.

It’s at most local liquor stores in my area, and not at all out of my price range. more expensive than your average rose, but not ridiculous.

    • Snazzy says:

I’ve had it before too. I liked it

  3. stormsmama says:

that silvery dress with the big flower in the first pic…wow just perfection!!!!!!

    • whatWHAT? says:

it’s funny…I remember that dress and I didn’t like it when she wore it but now I think it’s fab.

      strange how people’s tastes change!

  4. minx says:

I’ve never liked rose wine, but maybe I’ve never had a really good one.

    • TasteeIce says:

Do you like dry? Sweet? Oxidised? Fruit-forward? Mineral? Fresh?

There’s so many different styles of rosé, but it’s definitely harder to come by outside of France because most rosé drinkers like disgusting swill.

      • minx says:

I like dry red wine and the roses I had back in the day were sweetish. It’s been decades, so I’m sure I wasn’t drinking the greatest stuff.

  5. Jb says:

Which rose is the limited bottle? Constantly see the rose cotes de Provence at my grocer and the liquor store for under 20 bucks. Always wanted to try so might pick up next time.

    • Amandine says:

Cotes de Provence is the name for all the rosé wine produced in the region of Provence in France. We have thousands of different producers there. Never seen the Chateau Miraval rosé in the supermarkets.

  6. Holly says:

Miraval is a solid rose, nice to bring to a dinner party. They sell it at TJ’s for $20-22 and that’s the best price I’ve seen it. I prefer it to whispering angel but they’re in the same category.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

I’m with you on the Whispering Angel – its a good Rose but Miraval is better and is more widely available than WA.

    • CAVandy says:

Yeah the regular Miraval rosé used to run in the high $30s but now I’ve seen it at Costco for around $19-20. It’s nice that they partnered w the Perrin family, they are legit great French winemakers.

Re: Whispering Angel I used to be a fan but it’s a classic case of over-production and now quality is really low. My new fav’s are the rosé-gris blends from Provence that tend to be a lot crisper/drier.

  7. Lesanne says:

The two of them together were the rare instance of a couple truly being better together than individually. Before everything went south they accomplished some amazing things and challenged each other to be better. No matter if you are pro AJ or pro BP this can be observed. I am neither by the way,

    • whatWHAT? says:

eh, I disagree with this. I think that SHE challenged HIM to be better.

she’s still doing what she did before and during their marriage, whereas he did a lot more charity stuff when he was with her. I think he was “better” with her, but she would be the same person no matter WHO she was with, or (as noted) when she’s single.

      • Eve says:

        @WhatWhat?:

Agree with almost everything you said.

The point I disagree with is “think he was ‘better’ with her.”

I never thought he had become better with her. He just pretended to have.

      • whatWHAT? says:

Eve, apt note, and point taken. I agree. maybe he did really TRY to be better, but I think it was more pretending, too.

  8. Kay says:

Why did these two beautiful people who were so madly in love with each other ever split up. It seemed they were going in different directions. They do have beautiful children which they both need to parent.

  9. KidV says:

I like their rose. I usually only drink reds, but for a nice rose on a hot day, theirs is perfect. I usually grab a case at Costco to have on hand for the summer.

  10. Trish says:

I’m a big fan of this wine also. I’m more of a red fan, but on a hot summer afternoon a glass of cold rose is mmmmmm and this one is crisp and fruity and not overly sweet. My only complaint – yeah, I know I’m being super picky here – is the bottle shape won’t allow it to fit in a wine fridge laying down.

  11. clairej says:

In NZ you can buy at Glengarrys. I have had the sparkling rose and it was yum.

  12. Kay says:

Brad was always more interested in environmental issues and did things privately. He learnt to fly because of her and seemed more engaged with his fans and travelling more. He supported her when she was directing, when her mother died, when she was pregnant and gave birth and when she had her operations. He also appeared in her film she was directing. They supported each other.

  13. Ashley G says:

All over Paris are ads for their rose. If it’s prestigious I wouldn’t know because the ads are everywhere, suggesting you should just go to your local Nicholas or Monoprix and pick up a bottle.
