Pete Davidson on his mom dating: ‘Someone should slam her’

Does anyone watch Tan France’s Dressing Funny series on YouTube? I kind of love it. For the unfamiliar, Tan styles various comedians, trying to match their style with an updated look. But in the brief eight-minute segments, Tan slips a little counseling session, so we get to know each comedian a little more. The idea originated on a one off in which Tan took Pete Davidson shopping to get him in something other than sweats and an oversized athletic jacket. This past Thursday, things came full circle when he styled Pete for his own Dressing Funny segment. During the clip, Tan and Pete spoke a lot about Pete’s mom, Amy Waters Davidson, in part because Tan loves her, but also because Pete lives with his mom in a house he bought for them so she takes up a lot of space in his life. Tan asked Pete if he was okay with his mom dating, to which Pete said she desperately needed physical intimacy as she’s been celibate for a sustained period of time. Only, as you may have guessed, those are my words, not Pete’s. His were, “someone should slam her.”

I’ll transcribe the part about Pete’s mom since most of it is spoken with a bacon burger in his mouth so I’ll spare you:

Does your mom date?

I’m trying to get her to.

How does it feel when your mom dates?

I don’t care. Someone should slam her. Seriously, she’s been like, not with anybody since my dad died. Someone needs to get up in that and get that lady off my back.

She’s might see this, Pete

I don’t care. At this point, I might f—k her.

So, again, it’s Dressing Funny, which implies comedians will comedy. Like Tan, I am actually more put off with Pete mowing down that burger while in a gorgeous suit than his crass comments. I have a couple of friends, both men, who speak of their single mothers in such a way. One says things like this in front of her and she kind of jokingly waves him off, but it seems like she likes the attention. The other never speaks like this in front of his mother, only behind her back. Personally, I think she’s perfectly happy being single and the ‘concern’ is completely in my friend’s mind alone. I do think Pete was just trying to be shocking so I’m not going to over analyze him. If you peel away the vulgarity of his comments, I think he probably feels responsible to look after his mother, especially considering that he lives with her. She’s was dealt a rough hand, like so many 9/11 survivors, and who knows how she needed to deal with it. Maybe she hasn’t wanted to date or maybe she’s struggling to find happiness and has wrapped herself up in Pete’s world, so she doesn’t have to deal with her own. For my bet, I’m guessing Amy’s doing just fine for herself. Just because Pete doesn’t know about it, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

But seriously, Pete needs to rock a suit more often. It may be off brand for him, but he looks good.

Asking an adult son if he’s “okay” with his mom dating is sort of weird?

  2. grabbyhands says:

Still gross and crass. I will never understand his attraction on any level.

  3. Nev says:

    Oh geez. Stop.

I would not mind the vulgarity so much if the concern was really about his mom finding someone to spend time with and not her “getting off his back”. I kind of get what he means because I assume living with a parent when you are an adult is always going to be awkward and frustrating, but he made an active choice to live with her so he needs to deal with the consequences. I do think it is nice he bought her a home though. This gesture keeps me from believing he is a total swine.

I find Tan’s voice very soothing. Like he is the living embodiment of warm tea with honey. I might be fooled by his accent. I don’t always like his fashion choices but I appreciate the fact that he tries something different. I will never understand why people like high water pants. I guess that is because I like my pants to drag on the ground.

You read waaay too much into his joke. He is not trying to getting her off his back. If that were truly the case he wouldn’t have bought a home to live in – with HER.
The intent of his joke is pretty straight forward. He wants his mom to have someone in her life.

      • aiobhan targaryen says:

Not sure why you feel the need to explain whatever it is he is trying to do. He failed at his “joke” and you failed at your Pete whispering. He actually said ” get her off my back.””Someone needs to get up in that and get that lady off my back.”
You can love your parents and be annoyed with some of their behavior. That is a part of being in a relationship as an adult with a parent. He would not have so offhandedly mentioned that part if it was not true. He wants his mom to have someone in her life… so that she can get off his back.

Her love life is none of his concern. She’ll meet someone when she is ready.

      • Shannon says:

Yeah, I heard the “get her off my back” as joking as well. It’s not on-brand for him to say something like, “I love her a lot and I’d like to see her happy with someone in her life.” It was pretty clearly kidding imo.

  5. Oh No says:

The immaturity is real in this one.

  6. Erinn says:

I don’t find this offputting mainly because I feel like that’s the kind of relationship that they have. There’s no way that she’s not very used to his sense of humor at this stage of the game. And I don’t think he actually wants to unload his mother one someone else – I really do think he’s being facetious.

Now if I said this about my own mother she’d end me.

    • TheHeat says:

      I agree, @Erinn
I’m sure his mother is fully aware of his ‘schtick’ by now. This is who they are.

    • susiecue says:

I feel the same way. I’ve read they are very close and I also think he’s being tongue in cheek to avoid being “sappy” about it

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

Exactly. Pete clearly has an awesome relationship with his mom and Im pretty sure she is used to his sense of humor. I think he loves her and wants her to be happy and find someone.

  7. Arizona says:

I think it’s funny, but my mom has been single since my parents divorced 24 years ago so I get where he’s coming from. and trust me, people have tried to imply that my mom is getting it and I wouldn’t know. not the case, and I don’t even live with her to know that.

    • Dana marie says:

My grandmother became a widow at age 47. She decided that she was not going to remarry or even date because she didn’t want to have to cook, clean and iron for another man. She was not looking for a replacement husband. She was very emotionally independent and said she’d rather focus on her 7 kids.

      • Arizona says:

Yep, my mom had to raise my sister and I singlehandedly. She said that if we hadn’t been so young (6 and 10) she probably would have dated, but by the time we were older and independent, she had been single for so long that she didn’t want to adjust to living with anyone else or doing anything other than what SHE wanted to do. She’s got 3 dogs and is content with her life.

  8. ZsaZsa Fierce says:

    So disrespectful.

  9. Naddie says:

Did he really say “at this point I might f*&#k her”? English is not my first language so could anyone tell me if it means something else than what it seems?

    • Arizona says:

He did, and it means what he said. But it was meant as a rude, tongue-in-cheek joke that isn’t supposed to be taken literally.

    • Chaine says:

Yes, he did. I guess I must be in the minority in not finding incest hilarious.

  10. AnnaKist says:

“He’s charming”, said no one. 😶

  11. Sassbr says:

Tbh I feel like nobody would be interested in dating his mom because she’s got such an obnoxious kid who is going to start doing stand up about mom’s sex life. The second she gets a new dude, he’s going to be like “He guys, this is Ken, my new dad, he really gives it to her, ya know what I mean, I’m always starting with him so I can mess with him, you know, like shut UP, KEN, don’t tell me what to do, YOU ARE NOT MY REAL DAD! Heh heh heh heh heh,” making jokes like he’s in the 2020 reboot of Stepbrothers or something.

  12. Lizzie says:

this guy has issues with boundaries. his “humor” is being sexually explicit at the expense of women in his life…and that isn’t that funny.

if he were talking about himself that is one thing but he’s always putting someone else’s name in his mouth. it doesn’t matter if his mom “thinks” its ok – it matters that he is the type of guy who can’t just speak without having to be desperately attention seeking while hiding behind a joke.

  13. Dani says:

I was okay with the someone should slam her comment but the I might F her by then threw me off. Ew.

  14. Cate says:

This was kind of off-color charming until he got to “get her off my back” and commenting that he might do it himself. Then it just got offensive.

  15. Money@ says:

My father recently died and I desperately want my mother off of my back. His mother probably guilted him into living with her like my mother is now. Cant they be happy they finally get to live alone?
