When we first heard about Angelina Jolie’s potential involvement with Marvel’s The Eternals, many outlets theorized that Angelina would play a character named Sersi, who is something like an ageless goddess who lives among humans. But during the Comic Con presentation, they announced that Angelina would not be playing Sersi, she would be playing Thena. Considering that few people really grasp what The Eternals will actually be about and who the main characters really are, we had questions. Well, allow Pop Sugar to try to explain it:
The Maleficent: Mistress of Evil actress plays Thena, a character that has been around since 1976. There are multiple iterations of her character, so it will be interesting to see which storyline Marvel opts for in the film. If the movie follows the 2006 Eternals title, we’ll likely see Thena with no recollection of her history as an immortal superhuman, due to reality warping by a character named Sprite. Instead, she ends up as a researcher at Stark Enterprises and marries a human named Thomas Eliot, later welcoming a son. It’s not until the arrival of Ikaris (played by Richard Madden) that Thena’s true past will be revealed.
So, what is her past? Originally, Thena is introduced as the warrior daughter of the Eternal Zuras, and their relationship has strong parallels to Zeus and Athena. She’s seen bopping around Athens, and is known for her impressive intellect thanks to studying with mortal and Eternals teachers.
So Thena is a sideways version of Athena, goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Awesome. It also sounds like Angelina will be playing a sideways version of Wonder Woman-with-amnesia, right? Like, she’s a super-powerful goddess but she doesn’t remember that she’s a powerful goddess so she just marries some dude and has a baby and then Richard Madden shows up and she’s like “oh wait I don’t have amnesia anymore”? F–k it, I’d watch that.

Charlize Theron would be a better choice
How and why??
I think Charlize has become the better actress. Most of Angelina’s recent work leans to camp roles, notwithstanding By the Sea which was excruciatingly bad.
@Skeptical. Angelina is still a fantastic actress. And this role isn’t going to require Oscar-level acting to begin with. It’s a superhero film. Which is right in Angelina’s wheelhouse since she was doing female action-led work long before Charlize was. Im excited to see her return to that kind of role because she is always awesome in them. And people seem to forget that. She needs to remind them what a bad *ss she’s always been.
I thought she was the bomb as an actress in the past. I just think she’ s just developed her interests in a different direction. No harm or foul on her. Another Angelina bad @ss performance is tired and I’m not sure she’s got interest from this film’s demographic.

I agree that Theron is a better actress, partially because she has more range.
IMO, Jolie is hit or miss in her roles. she was great in Girl, Interrupted (OBV) and I think she does well in action movies (Tomb Raider) and DEFINITELY was great as Malificent (the sort of over the top OMG DRAMZ and camp was well done). but I didn’t like her in any of her dramatic roles.
But this role sound like she’ll do just fine.
Too bad she didn’t get chosen. How she would be a better actress in a Marvel movie stumps me. Charlize has the tendacy to overact in some roles and has this same blank face. Oh well she has a fan in you. But Angie will be great and people need to leave her alone and move on. If you watch the movie fine. If u don’t fine. Can’t change it and it will make money.
I remember pieces written to try and blackball this woman and crown Pitt the King of HW and she would be thrown out after their divorce got a bit messy and she is proving them wrong with a vengeance and Im loving every minute of it.

I’m so glad Kevin Feige — the executive behind MCU’s amazing success — preferred Jolie as well.
It’s funny back in the day when CharlI’ve couldn’t open a movie and had bombed multiple times trying to get her ‘action,’ cred, then finally she scored a hit with Kristen Stewart at the wheel which got her the mad max part ….but her name alone can’t open a film. That was true then, and it’s still true. I think she’s a good actress but for me, she’s kind of a charisma vacuum. The opposite of Angelina.
But I see why her fans want her to be Angelina’s competition, they like pretending that someone can take AJ’s action crown, but Theron being mentiones is a bit delusional…she never has been able to, not even in her heyday…it makes more sense to suggest Scarjo or Beckinsale or mila, but the truth is, no one, but Angelina, can open original non Marvel action films.

I have a theory about Angie. She dresses with those awful looking sack dresses to piss off the paps 🙂 She always tames down her beauty hoping it will make her less interesting but I gotta say, doesn’t work ! ^^
I hope so!! It’s so unfair for female celebs to always have press commenting on their bodies or when they have a day off without professional hair and makeup they’re called “disheveled” or “looking tired”. But when it’s Leo looking homeless and hungover with his belly out in something unflattering it’s all “Leo looking cool and casual”. 🙄

people are such sloppy dressers. She’s patient cause the thought of going out with all your kids would give my mother anxiety. My mom has 5 kids. I’d pay to see Richard Madden and Angelina Jolie in scenes together. Two sexually fluid or Bisexual superheros! This world is changing.

Boring
I wouldn’t say Angelina is a campy actress but everyone has their opinion. By the Sea wasn’t that terrible. She had on too many hats on that set which made her character a bit distant in some scenes. She should have concentrated on just one.
Changeling to me was her worst because it was just boring. All of her action roles are timeless and her as a action figure is not tired. People harp on her all the time because they dislike the path she has taken in her personal life.
True, Charlize can play a better villian because Angelina has rarely played one. Her earlier work when she was more focused and not consumed with other things were brilliant. She even played a comedic role in Playing by Heart which was hilarious.
It’s amazing how her life has evolved and people judge he work by what happens in her personal life which is shameful. They don’t do men this way at all. Again its all about the backlash of Aniston and Pitt for some people. I think she is magnificent and will watch most things she does.
I would rather them take the sauce of her role from the preface of her having twins by the Celestial Kron. If they modernize it they will go with the one above. Either way is will be interesting and she always gives her all in everything she does so I’m in.
I want her to throw that caftan away and never wear it again. Period. I know she wears things for profit but this aint happening although some people like it and will buy it. I think it should be more for lounging around the house.

She’s gorgeous but not much of an actress. She seems to love being a mom and working on her activist efforts, and I really admire her for this.
IMO, Angie could act circles around Charlize.
