Brad Pitt was careful about the Oscar buzz talk at the Venice Film Festival

76th Venice Film Festival 2019,Celebrity Sightings

Brad Pitt has been in Venice all week ahead of tonight’s big premiere for Ad Astra. I am still unmoved by the description of the film and the various trailers, but I’m interested in reading some of the reviews out of Venice. Meanwhile, Brad has been happily posing for photos wherever he goes. He’s done two mini-photocalls by the boats/gondolas yesterday and today. I know the Pitt stans don’t want to hear this, but… I think he’s still wearing lifts? He wore lifts to at least one OUATIH premiere and I just have to ask…why? Why is so important to Brad right at this moment? Why does he want to look taller? Anyway, Brad said words about masculinity at the press conference:

Brad Pitt, the star and producer of James Gray’s sci-fi drama “Ad Astra,” which world premieres at Venice on Thursday, said that the film was a personal one and to some extent dealt with the modern concept of “masculinity.”

“In retrospect, what (Gray and he) were digging at was that definition of masculinity,” Pitt said at a news conference, alongside Gray and co-star Liv Tyler. “We’ve both grown up in an era where we were asked to be strong… and there is a value in that, but (it has also created a) barrier because you’re hiding some those things you feel ashamed of. We all hide and carry individual pain and wounds.”

“We were asking the questions — ‘Is there a better definition (of masculinity) for us… a better relationship with loved ones, with your kids and with ourselves.” The actor said he and Gray didn’t have a “normal male relationship” because they are “open about sharing feelings, perceived failures or missteps.”

Pitt said one of the most challenging things of the film was to portray a lack of connection with someone who is on his own. The actor producer said he was inspired by the character’s journey “as a man, as a father and as a son.”

Pitt said he and Gray also share a love for “great films of the 70’s. “In these films, the characters are not all good or bad but humans. These are the stories Im drawn to… more complex than a black and white image of the world.”

Asked if he hoped to end up at the Oscars, Pitt said he was eager to see the film “get out there”and “curious to see where it lands” because “it has something to say about who we are… our purpose…Every year, I see amazing talent getting acknowledged, and amazing talent not getting acknowledged… When your name comes up it’s great and when it doesn’t, it’s a usually a friend, so I’m happy too,” said Pitt.

I asked this before, but how many movies do we need about “what is masculinity?” It feels like those are most of the films being made these days, and yes, I’m even including those superhero movies. What’s weird is that this isn’t even the most recent SPACE movie about masculinity – these exact same talking points were used ad nauseum for Damien Chazelle’s First Man too. As for the Oscar discussion… Brad wants an Oscar. He wants an Oscar for acting. He’s going to campaign for Once Upon a Time, and probably not Ad Astra.

Here are some additional photos from the whole Venice “pose by the boats” thing. Liv Tyler wore trousers, which is the only thing women should do if they’re getting in and out of gondolas. My nemesis Laura “Renata” Dern wore a fugly striped dress and flats. Adam Driver will always be better in motion than in photos. And finally, Kate Upton looks like a catalogue model in 1988.

I like Laura Dern. See the movie The Tale. She chooses some fascinating unsettling movies. She’s fearless! And I like her dress.

  2. Kitten says:

Man I definitely would with Adam Driver.
He’s totally not my type but there is just something about him that I find really sexy…

    • Skyblue121 says:

Mmmmmmm. Me too. He is a tall drink of water.

    • Savannah says:

He’s the right amount of quirky.
Saw him in a film where he’s a poet, can’t remember the name, and for some reason I just believe he’s just like that character: introverted, smart and observant.

    • Jerusha says:

He’s exactly my type, but I’m old enough to be his mother, darn it.

And he looks great whether still or in motion.

  3. Vexa says:

God I find Adam Driver so HOT.

So, nobody asked bradley about his son going off to college? Not one person asked how he felt to have his first child going off to college. I may have missed a few articles about dead beat brad though.

Anyways. I think I am going to wait to see Natalie Portman’s space movie instead. The trailer for the film is just as Oscar baity (bad wig, period piece, a northerner’s attempt at a deeply southern accent). Plus, the story behind the movie is right up my alley: bonkers. it is the story of the lady astronaut who drove across country in a diaper to kill her lover’s girlfriend. The trailer makes it look like one thing but the story is different.

Liv Tyler is wonderful and genuinely one of the sweetest actresses in hollywood, but I am not going to waste my time with this film. I hope she has other stuff coming out soon.

Laura Dern needs to stop dressing herself. This outfit is unacceptable. It is not even fun bad like bjork does. it is drab and does not fit the setting she is in. It is summertime still. her dress looks like a blanket that you take on a fall pinic to go make out on under the stars. the shoes are trash.

    • OriginalCarol says:

My guess is they were told not to ask any personal questions prior to press con. Just the background for the movie’s theme and what motivated him to be in this movie, lol. Pretty vanilla if you ask me.

  5. Lowrider says:

Brad is dressed sloppily. Always looks like he rolled out of bed.

    • Josephine says:

I disagree although I don’t like the hat or shoes. one thing is for sure, he’s been working out/back in shape and maybe, hopefully gave up the booze.

  6. Valiantly Varnished says:

I think Laura looks cute. The dress is pretty if a bit formal for the occasion. And Liv -like most super tall women – looks great in high waist wide leg pants.
Also Kaiser – imma need you to stop throwing shade at Adam Driver. He is FINE.
Brad may be shrinking. No joke. He’s in his mid-fifties now and its when some men lose a bit of height. That may explain the lifts.

Kate Upton looks like she is wearing a Fashion school project

    • lucy2 says:

      Agree on all points.

I never got Driver’s appeal when I suffered through the first season of Girls, but I’ve changed my tune on him.

I don’t see the lifts in Brad’s shoes? Tom Cruise’s are always painfully obvious, but I’m not seeing it here.

  7. Anne says:

Adam Driver hmmmm yeah. Also, his movie Marriage Story was greatly received in Venice. Imagine if Scarlett gets an Oscar nom, she’ll be insufferable *rolls eyes*

  8. Savannah says:

Liv Tyler and Laura Dern are my all time favourites.

    That’s all I have. I just L O V E them and their skills.

  9. Lady D says:

An article about Brad gets him three mentions in the first 16 comments.

  10. Yvette says:

Brad is 5-feet, 11-inches tall. Why would he need to wear lifts??

    • LadyT says:

He’s not wearing lifts. Or a wig for that matter.

      • Yvette says:

Thanks for agreeing with me. I don’t understand the ‘lifts’ talk, which seems hard to do in most of the shoes he wears. (shrugs) For all the talk about Brad in lifts, wigs, and botoxing I think he’s aging rather gracefully without real concern about such things.

  11. Gessy says:

What a legendary year for Pitt.

  12. Kikis says:

He looks good actually . and No point for him to answer or associated with angelina drama of any kind she is gone …
What bad is I want a blockbuster for him but he always have a way to kill it or situtation arise to be like that.

    • Ok says:

How is she gone? They have 6 kids together. No point in talking about her drama? Guess those children are too much drama for him.
