Here are some photos of Tom Hiddleston at the American Theatre Wing’s Say Yes To Artist Gala, which was held last night at Cipriani’s. Tom has obviously been in New York all summer, preparing and rehearsing Betrayal, which has been transferred from the London stage to Broadway. For all of the Betrayal events, Tom has been looking well put together, in his usual impeccable suits. Last night’s monochromatic look made him look like a gangster wannabe though. I have no idea what this is about.
Anyway, he’s doing Betrayal on Broadway and much like the London production, this Broadway production is wildly successful. Tom’s fans – whom I call Dragonflies – have been making the trek to see him in person. And while they’re there, they want to ENJOY the show. Sometimes they enjoy it too much:

An audience member at “Betrayal” on Broadway, which the “Night Manager” actor is starring in, was moved to tears, moans and spasms of ecstasy Wednesday at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. A commenter on the All That Chat message board revealed that a person in their row at the performance, a well-dressed “young woman in her thirties,” felt the Harold Pinter play deeply — and she wasn’t Loki about it.
“My companion could feel a rhythmic banging against his armrest, punctuated by occasional low moans and giggles,” the unwitting voyeur said. “[It] got faster and faster until there was one slightly louder ‘Ha’, and she resumed her normal seat position, put her head back and closed her eyes.”
Close to the sexy infidelity drama’s climax, when Hiddleston walked downstage and passionately kissed co-star Zawe Ashton, the panting woman kicked off Round 2, again adjusting in her seat, furiously pounding her armrest, letting out a “Ha” and dozing off. “Betrayal” was good for her; she enthusiastically applauded at the end, and quickly exited, perhaps to light a cigarette.
Still catching his breath, show spokesman Rick Miramontez had no comment. “The show was really wonderful and the cast first-rate,” added the poster, who said this is the strangest behavior they’ve seen in 55 years of theater-going. “But you might want to avoid seat B-3.”
I would be so mad if I bought a ticket to a Broadway play and someone seated close to me was doing any of that. I mean… control yourselves, Dragonflies. It’s fine to get super-excited to see Tom Hiddleston. But save the energy for when you get back home, or back to your hotel. Anyway, I’m sort of wondering if this is actually real, or if this is maybe some kind of Dragonfly Stunt, some fakery on a message board, possibly to get Tom’s attention.

It’s possible that she just got herself banned from the theater. If the theater gets the seat number from the person reporting it and she purchased the ticket with a credit card, they can block her from purchasing by credit card. And they will make her name known to the box office people, security and ushers so she won’t get admitted if she tries to pay cash. My guess is that this pervert is already known to the theater people and this will give them the opportunity to get rid of her.
Good point, Lightpurple! I doubt theatres really “clean” the seats often, if at all (other than to dust it off on the odd occasion). I sure wouldn’t want to *knowingly* sit in that seat after. And while I know a lot worse happens in movie theatres, what I don’t know (specifically) won’t hurt me! Lol

The Jacobs only seats 1,000 people. That’s small by theater standards. It depends where you are sitting. The second row, where this happened, would be difficult to summon an usher but elsewhere in the theater is different and ushers are supposed to be “show watching,” which means watching the audience for bad behavior. If this happened where I was, I could have easily gotten an usher.

There was a Twitter thread last night (user heyadamroberts), and someone confirmed it. Hopefully Tom’s management is able to shield him from stuff like that, but after it appeared on Page 6, I’m sure people in the theater will “tease” him about it.
To get that image out of my mind, I watched Tom on Colbert doing a little Hamlet with Stephen, and it will never be the same again for me!
Oh, and Zawe was at the same event at Cipriani’s last night, looking very good in black and gold – but she went with the shiny dress motif again.

I saw him on Colbert last night, he seemed a little nervous at first, but ego intact when audience went crazy…should have been more about the play and less about Loki, hated the blue monochromatic look, who dressed him? She also has terrible taste in clothes – I wonder how he would dress if all of these designer suits were not given to him to wear. Hopefully their dating rumors are just that, because Deadline reported the show was still trying to raise money thru the previews! No PR other than the show and performances matter.
I honestly wonder how Tom must feel about all of…this. He must be super embarrassed. I’m trying to put myself in his position…as a professional actor, just wanting to be low-key (pun intended), and hearing about stories like this after my play…UGH.

I threatened to pull a Patti Lupone on the woman in front of me if she didn’t put her damn phone away during the performance after she said she planned to record the whole play. I didn’t pay money and travel for hours to watch a play through someone else’s phone. She was stunned when I summoned the usher doing the phone check because she had simply flipped her phone over on her leg so the light didn’t show instead of turning it off and putting it away.
Anyway, he was on Colbert last night for a delightful interview. And he needs to stop playing with his hair. It starts out nice and clean and fluffy and then he plays with it.
Its 100% totally unacceptable, not funny and she should have been arrested.
I’m mortified for everyone around her and the cast who have this story out there now. Jesus….

I once notified an usher about a group of teenage girls sitting behind me during a performance of Les Mis, as they thought it was completely appropriate to sing along to the songs and then talk throughout the dialogue. I apologized to the usher about complaining and she said, “Don’t be. This is why we are here!” and then marched right over to that group and let them have it. The second act was much more enjoyable!
And if the usher doesn’t do something, ask for the Head or Chief Usher. One of my sisters ushers the theaters in Boston. Oftentimes, the act will set its own rules (phones, pictures v no phones, no pictures) but there are fairly standardized rules. Phones off during a play; no lights of any sort during a dance performance; phones & devices might even be pouched for a comedy act.
I think he looks fantastic…. and that’s all I can find nice to say. 😳

I’m very disgusted by the reactions to this story on social media and the news, which all seem to take an at least partially lighthearted tone.
What she did was engage in sexual acts next to non-consenting strangers. She also behaved sexually towards an individual who was trying to do their job.
Imagine if a man was sitting in a cafe, watching a Waitress and palming himself through his jeans. I somehow doubt the people making “lol save it for the bathroom” and similar comments would think about joking in that situation.
And yes, I know, power dynamics. But the point remaons that a sexual offence is a sexual offence, and the witnesses and Tom have every right to feel mortified, violated or humiliated.
No, it is a sexual offense. I was in Paris this week-end ant took the subway late. The carriage was empty and this men sits next to me and starts doing something weird in his crotch area.

Could have been a person with a mental disorder though? I have experienced something similar to this, twice at the theatre and once at the cinema. The latter was when I went to see Avengers Endgame and it happened during the scene where a certain beloved character dies. Suddenly and woman started moaning REALLY loudly and rocking back and forth in her chair, and everyone of course started laughing, but she just kept going and going until the scene ended. Turned out it was someone with a mental disorder and because she had been so overwhelmed with emotion she could not control the noises she was making. So maybe this story is something similar? Otherwise it is just disturbing and I hope the woman gets banned from the theatre.

Well I genuinely though that maybe she was mentally ill and they had just misinterpreted her noises and reactions to the play. I think I was just confused about the whole masturbated-on-an-armrest-thing and had a bit of difficulty visualising how the heck she would have done that – not to mention how she could have done it without the whole theatre noticing. But after reading the full firsthand account of what happened, I can see now that it’s very unlikely that her behaviour was misinterpreted.
Barring mental health issues, this kind of behaviour is really gross. If she’s doing this on purpose, without regard for anyone around her, she should be charged.
I saw the play when it was in previews. I had no opinion on Tom Hiddleston beforehand. I only knew him from the Avengers and having a pretty devoted fan base. The play was excellent and he was terrific in it. At the end, I did actually think, “ok, I get it – he’s charismatic and a great actor, and he’s got a deceptively great body”.
I agree with everyone else above that the fan’s behaviour was gross, indecent and incredibly rude to fellow theatre goers. She should be banned from future performances.

Chiming in late. So I agree Tom is gorgeous, Colbert was fun but the interview ran a bit shorter than expected (I did love the broken sword during Coriolanus story) and I had hoped for a bit more about Betrayal but that play isn’t really US talk show banter material.
On to the main topic and before I start I just want to say that 1) I in NO WAY condone what is speculated the person in B-3 did or even being a general distracting annoyance at the theatre and 2) of the 3 actors on stage, I’m sure Tom has the craziest fandom. With that said, who’s to say it wasn’t Charlie or Zawe that she was fantasizing over? There is no report that she yelled out “Oh, Tom” at the crucial moment? I mean I’m partially kidding but facts matter.
Which brings me to the actual account. After reading the incredible headline, I went and read the whole forum thread. I’m on the side that something happened and it may very well be what we all think happened but even the person who originally posted about this stated in another post further down thread was that one of the reasons why they didn’t contact an usher was that they couldn’t be 100% sure that the woman in B-3 was masturbating. And the other is that they didn’t want to create an even bigger disturbance for the actor.
For those going to see Betrayal, I saw a midweek matinee recently and it was mostly full of retirees (I think this production is brilliant and had already seen it in London). I’m oldish (not retirement old but closer to that than college) and man–everyone complains about millenials–but 9 times out of 10, when I’ve been to a play and someone’s phone goes off, it’s always someone over 65-85, who first has trouble even locating the phone and then can’t turn it off. They talk during movies, fall asleep, etc. OTOH, the tend not to be thirsy and running toward the stage door, so … Anyway, midweek matinee there is no SD, one phone went off, multiple people coughing but there was seriously one poor soul who sounded like they were coughing up a lung for at least 30 miutes. It is a very quiet play. You hear everything. Be warned.

Call me naive but I tend to believe that this was a real post, otherwise, it was a very random old school Broadway chat board. If someone wanted to get Tom’s attention and/or cause drama, why not just post it on twitter?
