Taylor Swift: ‘There’s literally nothing worse than white supremacy. It’s repulsive’

Felicity Huffman pleads guilty in college admissions scheme!

Let me just start by saying that my mouth fell open while reading Taylor Swift’s Rolling Stone cover story, and to really feel the waves of insanity and just SWIFTINESS wash over you, I would recommend reading the entire thing yourself. It’s bonkers and really give yourself some time to really enjoy it. I won’t even have the space to really expand on so many of Taylor’s lengthy rants, and I’ve separated the Kanye West part of the interview into a second post. Strap in. Let’s go. Some highlights:

She’d had some upheavals in her career before the Reckoning of 2016: “I’ve had several upheavals in my career. When I was 18, they were like, “She doesn’t really write those songs.” So my third album I wrote by myself as a reaction to that. Then they decided I was a serial dater — a boy-crazy man-eater — when I was 22. And so I didn’t date anyone for, like, two years. And then they decided in 2016 that absolutely everything about me was wrong. If I did something good, it was for the wrong reasons. If I did something brave, I didn’t do it correctly. If I stood up for myself, I was throwing a tantrum. And so I found myself in this endless mockery echo chamber.”

Whether she has regrets about the “girl squad” thing: “Yeah, I never would have imagined that people would have thought, “This is a clique that wouldn’t have accepted me if I wanted to be in it.” Holy sh-t, that hit me like a ton of bricks. I was like, “Oh, this did not go the way that I thought it was going to go.” I thought it was going to be we can still stick together, just like men are allowed to do. The patriarchy allows men to have bro packs. If you’re a male artist, there’s an understanding that you have respect for your counterparts.

Her relationship with Scott Borchetta, her old Big Machine boss: “A lot of the best things I ever did creatively were things that I had to really fight — and I mean aggressively fight — to have happen. But, you know, I’m not like him, making crazy, petty accusations about the past. . . . When you have a business relationship with someone for 15 years, there are going to be a lot of ups and a lot of downs. But I truly, legitimately thought he looked at me as the daughter he never had. And so even though we had a lot of really bad times and creative differences, I was going to hang my hat on the good stuff. I wanted to be friends with him. I thought I knew what betrayal felt like, but this stuff that happened with him was a redefinition of betrayal for me, just because it felt like it was family. To go from feeling like you’re being looked at as a daughter to this grotesque feeling of “Oh, I was actually his prized calf that he was fattening up to sell to the slaughterhouse that would pay the most.”

Borchetta’s claim that she declined performing at the Parkland & Manchester benefits: “Unbelievable. Here’s the thing: Everyone in my team knew if Scooter Braun brings us something, do not bring it to me. The fact that those two are in business together after the things he said about Scooter Braun — it’s really hard to shock me. And this was utterly shocking. These are two very rich, very powerful men, using $300 million of other people’s money to purchase, like, the most feminine body of work. And then they’re standing in a wood-panel bar doing a tacky photo shoot, raising a glass of scotch to themselves. Because they pulled one over on me and got this done so sneakily that I didn’t even see it coming. And I couldn’t say anything about it.

How right-wing people thought she was on their side: “I don’t think they do anymore. Yeah, that was jarring, and I didn’t hear about that until after it had happened. Because at this point, I, for a very long time, I didn’t have the internet on my phone, and my team and my family were really worried about me because I was not in a good place. And there was a lot of stuff that they just dealt with without telling me about it. Which is the only time that’s ever happened in my career.”

When the white supremacists called her their Aryan princess: “I didn’t even see that, but, like, if that happened, that’s just disgusting. There’s literally nothing worse than white supremacy. It’s repulsive. There should be no place for it. Really, I keep trying to learn as much as I can about politics, and it’s become something I’m now obsessed with, whereas before, I was living in this sort of political ambivalence, because the person I voted for had always won. We were in such an amazing time when Obama was president because foreign nations respected us. We were so excited to have this dignified person in the White House. My first election was voting for him when he made it into office, and then voting to re-elect him. I think a lot of people are like me, where they just didn’t really know that this could happen. But I’m just focused on the 2020 election. I’m really focused on it. I’m really focused on how I can help and not hinder. Because I also don’t want it to backfire again, because I do feel that the celebrity involvement with Hillary’s campaign was used against her in a lot of ways.

She convinced herself that endorsing Hillary Clinton would backfire: “That’s literally what it was. Yeah. It’s a very powerful thing when you legitimately feel like numbers have proven that pretty much everyone hates you. Like, quantifiably. That’s not me being dramatic. And you know that. [RS: “There were a lot of people in those stadiums.”] It’s true. But that was two years later. . . . I do think, as a party, we need to be more of a team. With Republicans, if you’re wearing that red hat, you’re one of them. And if we’re going to do anything to change what’s happening, we need to stick together. We need to stop dissecting why someone’s on our side or if they’re on our side in the right way or if they phrased it correctly. We need to not have the right kind of Democrat and the wrong kind of Democrat. We need to just be like, “You’re a Democrat? Sick. Get in the car. We’re going to the mall.”

[From Rolling Stone]

“But, you know, I’m not like him, making crazy, petty accusations about the past.” THAT IS LITERALLY WHAT SHE DOES THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW. There are so many fundamental things that Taylor needs to reconcile about her image, her persona, her politics and everything else. I’m going to make a list!

1. Is Scooter Braun to blame for Kanye or is Kanye to blame for Kanye or is everyone to blame for Kanye? She blames Kanye for so much, then she blames Scooter Braun for everything too, including… asking her to take part in some charity benefits, which she didn’t even know about because everyone on her team knows not to bring her anything from Scooter!

2. Choose what you are – either you’re the savvy businesswoman who is on top of everything, or you’re the woman who passes off a big chunk of your business and management to other people. Personally, I think she can be a bit of both, but I’m wary of how she flits between both sides depending on what she won’t take responsibility for. When it’s about her music and her image, she’s the toughest businesswoman, the fighter, the ballbuster, the one on top of everything. When someone criticizes her, it’s not her fault because her team didn’t even bring it to her.

3. The Aryan princess thing. She will creep on her fans’ Tumblr accounts for months, but she was blissfully unaware of how white supremacists were calling her their Aryan princess for years. She didn’t know anything about the Aryan princess thing… but her lawyer tried to shut down a blogger who criticized Taylor for her “Aryan racebaiting.”

4. The New Democrat. She’s only publicly been a Democrat for a year and she’s saying sh-t like “I do think, as a party, we need to be more of a team.” A squad, perchance? A Democrat Clique?

Yeah… I have so much more to say but I’ll save it. This RS interview was a lot to take.

She loves Daenerys like me, I’m stan harder now!

  3. Becks1 says:

I don’t understand a lot of her comments. Maybe because I’m not that knowledgeable about a lot of the backstory with her, since I only generally follow the gossip?

I don’t understand the Manchester/Parkland thing. was she asked, and never knew about it because her team never brought it to her? Or was she never asked? Or was she asked, she knew about it, and she declined? I’m kind of thinking the latter, because she immediately goes on the offensive there.

It is super shady and passive aggressive, but I did kind of love “I’m not like him, making petty accusations about the past….” Except we all know that that’s Taylor’s “thing.”

And I completely agree with your point Kaiser that she goes back and forth depending on what she wants to take responsibility for. Of course part of that is human nature, but part of it is, again, just how Taylor is.

    • xdanix says:

It read more to me like either she wasn’t asked, or it was that the asking never got as far as her because her people saw Scooter’s name attached and instantly “nope’d” it because of that. Which, really, isn’t a great look if it’s that, because you’d think THEY would think that she might put that aside for that one night, that one cause. But to give her the benefit of the doubt, I suppose IF they simply declined without ever asking her and without giving her the chance to put those feelings aside, maybe she might have done just that and didn’t have the chance to. (Maybe that’s just me being too kind here mind you.)

    • Chisey says:

My impression is she had sort of standing orders, ‘if Scooter Braun asks me to do something the answer is no, period.’ Honestly it seems petty to not be the bigger person and participate in something like March for our Lives just because he’s involved, but being petty is not off brand for her

    • holly hobby says:

Obviously her team is full of teenagers because they don’t know how to scan a message and see what’s important or not. Who cares who the sender is. Be more concerned about the project. So she’s basically blaming Scooter for her not showing up to the charitable concerts.

  4. Aims says:

She’s all over the place. But the main thing I’m getting is that she’s not at fault for anything, it’s her team’s fault.

  5. Leriel says:

Taylor, denouncing white supremacists calling her aryan princess 2 years after, is epitome of “better late than never”, she could’ve waited another 2-3 years, why not.

  6. xdanix says:

I mean, I see the issues you’re pointing out, but I also like a lot of what she’s saying. And she might be new to speaking out on politics but she isn’t WRONG- Republicans get behind whoever their candidate is and they stick together there almost no matter WHAT. This Trump era is the perfect example of that. I’m not complimenting them- I still find myself STUNNED at the amount of awful they’re perfectly happy to look the other way on as long as they stay in power. I shouldn’t be shocked, I feel like there’s nothing that should shock us anymore, but I still find myself shocked. Democrats are a lot more divided in that way, and I agree with her- people really, really need to stick together to try and beat the evil. I’m seeing more of “I’ll vote for whoever the Dem candidate ends up being, even if it’s not who I want” now, thankfully, but still, I fear, not enough.

    • lucy says:

I agree with you…it is scary how democrats get all upset over things certain people do and they just can’t vote for them. Well, then, welcome to another FOUR YEARS OF TRUMP!!! You will NEVER find the perfect person, someone will always have an issue with something, even if it’s what you love about that person. Until the democrats realize this, it will continue to be the same. Republicans do not care, just bring the win! Don’t like it, but they have it. Supreme Court? It’s like the democrats never even gave that a thought. START THINKING!!! Get over the fact that Biden likes to hug people when greeting/comforting and think if not him, you have Trump, how is this better? Yet, can’t vote Biden because of this! I don’t want Biden, but I will take him over Trump 1000000 times over.

      • Betsy says:

Yep. Goopers are good soldiers. They march as they’re told and they show up at the. Allot box and consequently they have more representation than they deserve. Listen, I will support anyone who tries to expand voting and I think it’s disgusting that the GOP has made it so that it’s difficult for many – mainly poorer black citizens – and I consequently don’t put the expectation on o get ones butt in gear and get to the polls when there are significant hurdles for people to jump, but that doesn’t explain all the Democratic voters who *could* vote and just choose not to because…. they don’t like the candidate as much. Eff that. I actively dislike Biden as a candidate and think he’d be a liability, but I’m gonna vote for him. The GOP and its sexism, its racism, its theocracy-backers, its corrupt big money, must be beat back or America, as imperfect as she is, will cease to exist.

      • stepup says:

The GOP likes to talk about their “big tent” — the problem for us dems is that we actually DO have a big tent. Repubs can stay in lock-step because, save for a few outlier tokens, they all ARE the same.

If we want to unite as a party, everyone in it has to do a better job of understanding the issues faced by each of the Dem “factions,” instead of prioritizing the white centrist agenda of our tent. Dems need to do a better job of understanding each other, basically. And we CAN do it, because we’re the better, smarter, more compassionate party! I’ll say it again: We. Are. Better! We just need to get to work, individually.

I’d caution against voting for Biden just yet, though. The saying goes: Republicans fall in line, Democrats fall in love. So, if Biden gets the nod….people will stay home and not vote, and we’re looking at another 4 of Trump. It’s Warren this time, friends! She can bring it home.

    • Ann says:

Totally agree. Dems are divided right now. I don’t think it’s the worst thing right now because we’re in primary mode, but we definitely need to come together next year as a united front against trump, Moscow Mitch, and the entire GOP that is collectively, aggressively destroying our country. I have plenty to criticize Taylor for even though I’m a fan, but I will not shit on her political awakening. She’s right about this.

      • N says:

Don’t disagree with the political points. She is at least providing us with some crumbs at the end of such a slow gossip summer.

  7. Savannah says:

I can’t take anything she says seriously.
Her nr. 1 problem is that she NEVER takes responsibility about anything in her life. She’s always blaming someone else, and she has not done the growing up she tried to convince us of earlier. In her head she’s a victim of other peoples actions, constantly.
She needs someone around her to help her take more ownership of her life, words and actions. She needs to focus more inwards on herself instead of outwards on everybody else and how their pure existance hurts her little feelings.
    Grow up!

    • Millenial says:

She totes needs someone in her life straight-talking her and no one is doing it. She says her mother is her “therapist” and you can tell. Her mother clearly will not call her out or thinks she’s perfect or something.

      • The Hench says:

I was fortunate enough to have a supportive mother. She was my greatest cheerleader and I dearly miss her. Sometimes you need someone in your life to whom you are always right and mothers can be great at that. The problem is you don’t learn and grow unless you get told when you are wrong. To me the fact that she seems to only speak to her mother or people she employs explains a lot.

  8. C-Shell says:

I read the whole thing and burst out laughing so many times — especially at the quote we’re focused on in this post, “But, you know, I’m not like him, making crazy, petty accusations about the past” — AND NONE OF IT WAS MEANT TO BE FUNNY. Seriously, it’s worth reading in its entirety. 🤣🙄

  9. Giddy says:

My mouth fell open and I’m working on recovery. Oh Taylor, you are just so right about that whole white supremacy thing. It is repulsive, that’s entirely correct. Now tell us dear, when did you learn this? I could be wrong, but it sounds like vocabulariy words learned for a test, and now you wanted to make sure to use them in a sentence. Keep up the good work. And it always sounds intelligent and well read to insert the phrase “ dare I say”. Wow! You dared and said beautifully.

And let’s see…oh, on your critical thinking…very good. Yes, the Democrats do need to be more of a team. Really. I’m just so proud of you. I have no idea why some people think that you’re kind of dumb.

  10. JoanCalamezzo says:

I don’t like the styling for this cover at all. She’s just missing a red nose and a rainbow wig.

  11. Astra says:

“Prized calf”? “most feminine body of work” – I don’t buy it was all about her feeling like a daughter who got sold out by a sleazy business person. She’s been in the industry for a long time and she’s way savvier than that. And the feminine thing is dumb because she’s exploiting genuine feminist issues in a situation where it was really just about the transaction and not her being a woman who got taken advantage of due to her femininity or gender or whatever.

  12. Mumbles says:

“Gee I don’t know how the Girl Squad was misconstrued. All I did was assemble a group of other rich privileged women I barely know for a video to attack another woman in the business I don’t like.” Is she for real?

  13. MachineElf says:

On a positive note, I really like her cover photo.

  14. Maria says:

“I didn’t see that, but if it happened–” Girl it was all over the internet. I’m not buying this whole quasi-woke shtick. Stop appropriating and making fun of the bodies of women of color and we’ll talk.

  15. Purplehazeforever says:

There’s a lot to unpack here in this post… I have to read the article first & I need time for that. Objectively speaking, though…she’s not wrong about Republicans or Democrats. As far as her former label goes, she’s mad because Scooter Braun bought it. That’s it. She wouldn’t sign on to Manchester or Parkland because Scooter Braun was involved & Scott Borchetta probably knew that. Now Kanye…if only he hadn’t interrupted her acceptance speech at the VMAs…I’m tired of hearing about all of it. Everyone involved is a self involved jerk & doesn’t deserve sympathy. I don’t mind Taylor but some of you enjoy ripping her apart…

    • Alexis says:

@PURPLEHAZEFOREVER: I agree with your comment. And it’s nice to see one that isn’t solely based on the writers opinion or part of the echo chamber.

  16. Lucy says:

At a certain point she says she’s never done therapy. I’m gonna say this with the best of intentions: at least do consider it, Taylor!! You could come to terms with things you didn’t even know were there!!

  17. L84Tea says:

Her comments about politics had me rolling. Like, I’m so obsessed with them! See, I’m political now! Seeee!

  18. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Not about to waste a cup of awesome coffee reading the article in its entirety, but what I have read here, she simply sounds like a teenager. She’s incapable of mature retrospection and reflection. There’s a massive amount of cognitive dissonance, and she’d have anyone in her orbit swept up in a tornadic cone of passive aggressive destruction lol.

    • Pixie says:

Honestly, you don’t need to read the full article. You have 1000% nailed the gist of the article right here.

    • Kate says:

I read it yesterday and almost at the end of it she tells the journalist she has never gone to therapy and IT ALL MADE SENSE. A lot of her comments are just so all over the board how she analyzes if she does this people with think x and if she does that people will think y and how paralyzing that is for her. Girl, go to a therapist! How is anyone supposed to navigate her level of fame without professional help? Not your mom, not your bff, a professionallll.

  19. Tw says:

Taylor, self aware and self absorbed are two very different things.

  20. Valiantly Varnished says:

You know I read somewhere that becoming famous can freeze a person’s ability to mature and grow. And that whatever age you become famous at that’s the age you are mentally stuck at. Couple that with white privilege and growing up with money, Taylor has the trifecta going. She’s stunted. And it shows.

    • Jb says:

Chica will be stomping her feet at 70 crying that it’s not fair and people are so mean for not loving her and her brilliance…the world just doesn’t get such a complex woman such as herself!!!!

    • Pixie says:

Yep, I totally agree. She sounds like a perpetual 16 year old, and its quite jarring.

    • KL says:

George Clooney said that! Specifically in the context of how he was happy he didn’t really “break out” until his 30s. And I think about it ALL THE TIME.

  21. DS9 says:

She like hates white supremacy and yet she’s so steeped in it, trades in it, uses it to her advantage…

That’s how deep and all encompassing it is.

  22. Ann says:

I don’t like the styling and asthetic for this whole shoot. There is a picture of her with all these ruffled collars and she looks like a literal clown. Maybe that was the goal?

This interview is something else. The standard Taylor antics turned up to 11. Lots of big words and slick language all just to reiterate that Tay is the most victimized pop princess ever! Still love her. She’s always good for an unintended lol.

  23. SM says:

I think I now understand why there was a story a while ago about how “gorgeos” Joe allows her to have opinions. He must be one of those people who can just switch off their brain when someone is ranting non stop not filtered nonsense. Otherwise it must be rely hard to remain sane next to her

  24. The article is very easy to understand, detailed and meticulous! I had a lot of harvest after watching this article from you! I find it interesting, your article gave me a new perspective! I have read many other articles on the same topic, but your article convinced me!

  25. virginfangirls says:

I think one has to kiss her ass or she turns on you.
