The first ‘Wonder Woman: 1984’ trailer is here & it takes place in a mall!

I was a big fan of the 2017 Wonder Woman. There were a lot of great parts in what turned out to be a solidly good superhero film. Gal Gadot was sort of perfect as Diana/WW and Chris Pine was fantastic too. There were some incredible action sequences and I loved the love story. But yeah, there were some mediocre parts to the film too, and that’s okay. The film was good enough and successful enough to warrant a sequel, and after some angst and hand-wringing from Warner Bros, Patty Jenkins came on-board for the sequel too. From what I understand, Patty’s vision was to set the sequel in the 1980s. I’ve been very interested in what they would do, and now we have our first glimpse. Here’s the first trailer from Wonder Woman: 1984.

Fantastic use of New Order’s “Blue Monday” – it brings so much to the trailer, right? My first thought it that… Patty Jenkins is getting a lot of ‘80s stuff right. Half of the film looks like it takes place in a mall! Which is kind of awesome. As for the cast… I honestly didn’t recognize Pedro Pascal!! He’s playing Max Lord. Kristen Wiig plays Barbara Minerva/Cheetah. Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen return from the first film as the Amazons. And Chris Pine… is back… somehow…and we still don’t know how. The studio also released character posters, and Steve has got a fanny pack and ‘80s clothes, so there you go. I have no idea about the plot. No one knows. But I’ll watch the f–k out of this.

Also: I’m so happy that this looks bright and colorful. The DC Comic world is so incredibly dark, in subject matter and in set design. It’s wonderful to see such a colorful and light aesthetic for WW. Most of the film looks like it takes place in daylight!

It looks really cool! I can’t wait!

    • Lee says:

Me too! That part in the trailer when she shrugs off the golden wings…! She’s perfect for this role.

    • (TheOG)@Jan90067 says:

LOVED the first WW, more than I thought I would! Can’t wait for this one! Gal Gadot is awesome 😊

  2. booboocita says:

As a huge fan of the first film, I’m really looking forward to this one. I even bought the Funko Pop! dolls, and I never buy movie merchandise. My only reservation is the gold armor; the crotch looks like it’d be incredibly painful.

    • LadyMTL says:

I wasn’t a huge fan of the first film, but I am also really looking forward to this one. My reservation is actually why / how Chris Pine’s character comes back (I’ve read some theories, though) but otherwise two big thumbs up!

      • Betsy says:

I get the human brain: we’re willing to suspend all understanding of physics/known materials/history but a previously deceased guy is back? That’s a step too far! 😂

      • LadyMTL says:

LOL I know, right? I’m perfectly fine with a magical lassoo and bullet-proof bracelets but a guy back from the dead is too much.
TBH I’ve always been irked by that – unless the person is a ghost or a zombie, the dead should stay dead. 😛

      • Xi Tang says:

According to the plot leaks it’s pretty cringey reason for him to be alive. Won’t spoil it for you unless you want lol

      • BorderMollie says:

Personally I found the acting in the first one to be horrendous and this one doesn’t look much better. Chris Pines character was one of the worst parts too. Gonna wait for the audience score here lol

      • Darla says:

I thought Pine was good. I hate to say this, but Gal is awful. I mean, she so stunningly gorgeous, and really projects warmth, and I like her very much. But the girl can’t act. I am going to believe she’s gotten better. I know she didn’t get worse. And I did think she improved from Justice League to WW. So she will probably be better this time too. Either way, I can put that aside. It’s fine.

      • CoffeeShot says:

I’m with Betsy and LadyMTL. It’s not that I didn’t like his character in the first movie. Still, I HATE shark jumping, and I really get disgusted by franchises that just resurrect characters I’ve an over. It makes death seem so shallow….like, ‘oh, well. Until next time.’ And, lately, every major franchise seems to do it.

  3. aquarius64 says:

I love the trailer! Can’t wait until the movie comes out!

  4. Erinn says:

This was the first Chris Pine movie that I watched where I genuinely liked him. I was super upset with the ending of the first film – glad to see they’ve hauled him back in somehow.

  5. Darla says:

This is so Gen X, and I am so here for it! Cannot wait! Just look at the mall scene, I’m there. I’m in the mall. Oh, it was the best of times (my body!) it was the worst of times (my hair!), and I would love to relive it!

    • Alarmjaguar says:

I totally snort laughed at this. So.very.true! Why the perm? Why?

    • lucy2 says:

      Same here! Oh, the perms…

I think the 80s setting is perfect. The first film was really enjoyable, but the 80s nostalgia will add a whole other layer to the sequel.

      • CAVandy says:

OH YES perm *and* highlights lol

but New Order and 1984 fanny packs and the mawwwlll??? awesome!

    • Becks says:

I’m also Gen X and this trailer brought on the nostalgia! That mall looks super 80s, just like i remember, haha.
I cannot wait , this movie looks so freaking good.

    • TQB says:

The perms… the aquanet… the curling iron… Sigh.

  6. Sierra says:

This looks really good and I am happy they haven’t showed Cheetah in full costume yet.

  7. Abby says:

I really liked the first one – brought me to tears at some points! I’m not a comic book world aficionado by any means but I did like it. I think this sequel looks good! I was born in 1984 so this is fun. I just absolutely love Gal Gadot. I don’t know how Chris Pine can be back but I guess we’ll find out.

You’re right, it looks bright unlike a lot of the others in this genre. Very 80s with the fuzzy light and the music. Looking forward to this!

  8. Mia4s says:

It looks fun, I have hope!

I was joking with a friend the other day about how Pedro Pascal could still get it in The Mandalorian even though his face is completely covered by his armour. But now seeing his look in this trailer? Uhhhhhhh, no thanks. I’m good. 😂 (To be clear, that’s a compliment to the movie. That hair is a CHOICE!)

  9. Kcat says:

I’ve watched the trailer 5 times. I’m SO excited for this movie. Love Gal, she’s just mesmerizing to me.

  10. Heather says:

I am really looking forward to this film; I enjoyed the last one.

  11. anon says:

I watched it last night but doesn’t the villain say something about letting people live their dreams? So Kristen Wiig going from frumpy to a slow-mo glamour entrance. Steve is what Diana wants but I’m guessing he isn’t actually back/alive and she’ll lose him again, probably having to give him up in defeating the villain.

  12. Lara says:

I walked past Gal Gadot outside a theatre not so long ago and let me tell you – I walked into a wall looking at her she’s so luminous. My husband was gutted when I told him why I had done it.

  13. Digital Unicorn says:

Am so looking forward to this and I LOVE that its set in the 80s – the best part of the trailer was Chris Pine sporting his fanny pack which was ALL THE RAGE back then.

Gal Gadot really shines in the trailer so far and you can see that her military training really helped her in the role.

    • Malificent says:

LMAO at the fanny pack! And the best part is they are coming back in style as “waist packs” — I’ve been seeing them all over during online Christmas shopping. “A fanny pack by any other name….”

  14. Amelie says:

This is honestly one of the best superhero trailers I’ve seen and it is mostly due to the song, probs the most evocative of the 80s but the editing is fantastic too. I mean we see Wonder Woman swinging from lightning bolts at the end!! I am surprised they chose to reveal in the trailer Chris Pine is resurrected somehow and of course my theory is it has to do with Pedro Pascal’s character the villain. They somehow resurrect her former flame to manipulate Diana and she loses him all over again. Obviously I have no idea but I can’t imagine their reunion ends well? I half expected to see the cast of Stranger Things to make a cameo at some point!

  15. Prairiegirl says:

I lived through 80s fashion and the shoulder pads are not nearly big enough. This is my only criticism, which all things considered is minor. Otherwise 100% here for this movie!!

  16. Thaisajs says:

That mall isn’t too far from my house in Alexandria. It’s basically shut-down now and houses a homeless shelter and a Sears. It’s never looked so fancy! Very excited to see this movie.

  17. Becks1 says:

I’m excited for this. I was meh on the first one overall – like Kaiser said, I thought it had some awesome moments and some not-so-awesome moments, but overall I enjoyed it, didn’t think it was the best movie ever but I liked it. i’ll definitely see the second one, especially if Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen are back.

  18. Feeshalori says:

I’m on board for the fannypack and the lightning bolt swinging. And, lordy, the soundtrack!!

  19. A says:

That last scene killed me! “That’s just a trash can” LOL. I’m looking forward to this one more than any other super hero movie tbh and I hope it delivers cause the trailer looked promising.

  20. Dani says:

I freaking LOVE Gal!! I remember when she was first cast everyone was so meh about her but I’m glad to see how that’s changed. She makes me soo proud to be Israeli and be able to show my girls someone like her.

  21. Xi Tang says:

Gonna be debby downer but I’m not liking it that much. The music and the golden eagle costume are great. But gal’s acting/line delivery is still very bad. One of the main reasond why I didn’t like the first ww.
It also seems that they are keeping the overused slow motion zack snyder likes.
    It’s a no from me.

  22. Anne says:

    Can’t wait!! So awesome.
After the first movie, my (male) friend said that he became a feminist after the first 15 minutes of the movie, and a hard-core feminist after her final fight with Ares. 🙂

  23. Grant says:

This looks sublime. I loved the first movie, even with the CGI-heavy final act. I LOVE the homage to the comics with Diana’s tiara toss!!! And SHE LASSOS A LIGHTNING BOLD. I’m dead. I absolutely cannot wait for this!!!

  24. shells_bells says:

The mall they shot in is local-ish to me in Northern VA, so that’s exciting. It’s pretty much deserted now, but I can remember when it was still relatively happening.
Also, just here to say that I LOVE Blue Monday, always has been one of my faves!

  25. paddingtonjr says:

This looks fun and campy, perfect for a summer film. I wonder if the film will follow the original TV series and have “Steve Trevor” actually be the son or grandson of the Steve Trevor who was killed.

  26. Adrien says:

Chris Pine is probably an illusion brought out by the crystal statue Pedro Pascal was holding. That thing makes dreams come true, right? That’s what I got from the trailer.

    • CoffeeShot says:

I hope so. Loved Steve and all, but I HATE it when franchises jump the shark with dead characters. Marvel really abused it.

  27. Betsy says:

I am so looking forward to this.

  28. GEN_X says:

    ooh it looks so good.

  29. Chris Pine in a Members Only jacket. I’m here for it. 100%.
