Did we miss a simmering beef between Duchess Camilla & the Sussexes?

Buckingham Palace garden party

It feels like every combination of royal shenanigans has been dissected in the past month. How Prince Charles feels about Prince Harry. How Duchess Kate feels about Duchess Meghan. How William feels about Harry. How Meghan feels about Charles. And on and on. But were we sleeping on the biggest beef of all, Camilla versus the Sussexes? The Duchess of Cornwall did an event with Prospect Hospice Swindon this week and she was asked by a member of the Royal Rota, “Will you miss Harry and Meghan?” See her reaction:

The “course” is shady enough, but the f–king PAUSE. The pause is what made this Defcon Shady. So what do we know about Camilla’s simmering beef with Harry and Meghan? They never seemed to interact that much in general – I mean, they had to interact at various family events, but Camilla never seemed to take a special interest in Harry and Meghan and vice versa. Before now, I would have just said that Camilla doesn’t really care, she’d rather just be curled up with a bottle of wine. But… yeah, now I feel like we’ve missed a simmering beef.

  1. Melly says:

I honestly can’t imagine Camilla fighting with the Sussex. At most, she could be mad that H&M decided to step away from royal duties. Camilla is smart enough to know that means William will now target her and Charles.

    • Rapunzel says:

Yeah, I think the shade was more for the question itself… she gives this “bless your heart” smile, like, “do you really think I’m gonna say no, moron?”

      • Laura says:

        Good eye, Rapunzel.

      • Deanne says:

This completely. Just like Serena said “nice try” when the reporter asked her about the situation. I think she was shading the question and the asker rather then Harry and Meghan. She was clearly caught off guard.

      • Original Jenns says:

Agree. I’m sure they all think they’re prepared with the correct answer to that question if it pops up but it can take a second to register and then give the canned response no matter the real feeling. I don’t think there’s beef.
ETA I also think she thinks it’s a stupid question.

      • Vanessa says:

100% agree. She suffers no fools.

      • swirlmamad says:

Same here and I agree. I didn’t get a sense of any shadiness towards the Sussexes after watching the video.

      • Sarah says:

I think so too. That had the air of “Bless your heart, you tried it.”

      • Mego says:

        Think that’s it.

      • Yvette says:

I didn’t pick up on anything shady at all. I agreed that whatever look on Camilla’s face is being dissected was there because of the question and not any answer about Harry and Meghan. It appeared to be a savvy response by a seasoned royal who was once herself the subject of public hatred and scorn, not a diss.

Oh, and so agreed on the “Why, bless your heart!” sentiment. 🙂

      • not so gullible says:

I completely agree – shade was at the question, I was thinking she didn’t want to respond at all but then realized it would be more a statement if she said nothing.

      • Joanna says:

        That’s my impression as well.

  2. Maria says:

I saw this too but it looked more like Camilla was just caught off-guard and didn’t really know what to say. She seemed fine to me.

    • brooksie says:

Same! I have a feeling she didn’t clearly hear the question or it took a second for it to register with her.

    • shells_bells says:

This. She also may have been told not to discuss them and was deciding how to react. Mucha ado about nothing.

    • Kebbie says:

Yeah, I don’t think it was shade. I think it was a 72 year old woman’s reaction to having a dumb question shouted at her as she was walking away.

  3. teehee says:

I dont think they had a beef.
    I would assume:
    -they arent “leaving” like the press makes it out to be;
-What a silly question, and she can only answer it as silly as it was asked

that or, she has zero empathy and is glad to be rid of the drama cos shes on the side of Charles/The Queen and doesnt want her boat rocked by yet another spotlight grabber, a dejavu moment for her and her past with Charles.

  4. Toot says:

Camilla is all about Charles, and he’s probably been very unhappy because no one pays him attention like they do the Sussexes. That’s why she responded like that.

Charles and Will supposedly have grown closer over this situation and I think it’s because no matter what they both pulled, internationally, people still preferred Harry and Meghan.

  5. Birdix says:

Or she could have been annoyed by the question being yelled at her.

    • lemonylips says:

yeah, i had the same thought. like the pause was more in a sense of: are you really asking me this? thought it was a done deal…

    • Tasz says:

I agree. I remember a female reporter screaming a question at PH, his scowling and then saying something like “you know that’s not how this is done”. Maybe Camilla paused because of the reporter’s behavior. I don’t know.

  6. Nahema says:

I suspect that rather than there being any beef previously, there’s probably a feeling disappointment from the Royals towards the Sussex’s. I’m not saying that they’re right to feel that way but the Royals seem to be all about ‘put up and shut up’, doing whats best for the greater good (the Crown) rather than your individual family unit.

    • Maria says:

I can name several examples of other royal family members doing things that are not best for the greater good of the crown. But none of them were black, so….

  7. Sofia says:

She could be but Camilla gives me the whole “I don’t give a fuck and I don’t play these palace games” vibe

But you never know with these people

    • Tessa says:

Camilla is and was a skillful game player. That’s how she got where she is today. I don’t admire her for it.

  8. Flying fish says:

Beef? Who knows. Camila should try to remember her history.
Beefing Diana’s son would not be a good move for her.

    • S808 says:

This. Her image has image has improved but no one will ever forget her part in Charles and Diana’s failed marriage. I think she knows that and minds her business.

  9. Originaltessa says:

Anything is possible with this family. If Harry was giving his dad a lot of headache, then I can see Camilla being peeved. What Meghan and Harry asked for isn’t exactly great news for Charles. Honestly, it’s terrible. So, yeah, I can see Camilla being pissed.

    • Yvette says:

Yet, nothing on her face in the video suggests that Camilla is pissed, only perhaps startled by the question.

  10. lucia says:

Has anyone asked her what she thinks about her brother-in-law being a rapist pedophile?

    • Laura says:

      Thank you!

    • THeCat'sMother says:

      F’course…. 🙂

    • S808 says:

That’s the REAL question that needs to be asked!

    • Snazzy says:

      yup yup yup

    • grumpy says:

It takes away from the real issue if you make accusations that can be refuted and are clearly wrong. This is why some people don’t understand because of all this labelling as a paedo. A paedo is attracted to pre-pubescent children – have we seen or heard any evidence of that at all? None. Virginia (I don’t know if there are others) was over the age of consent in the UK, so it was legal from that perspective. The issues are human trafficking and prostitution – women being taken advantage of and being shipped around the world for the pleasure of self-entitled pricks.

      • Blair Warner says:

Thank you, Grumpy. Andrew is despicable and certainly took part in criminal activity – but there’s no evidence of him ever being a pedophile. Words matter.

  11. Lenn says:

She could be caught offguard by the question.

  12. Alexandria says:

I think she DGAF. But frankly I wished she did! I wonder if Charles told her to stay out of it so as not to ruin the massive long-term PR game / campaign for her. She was the most vilified person in the UK at one time, probably hated too by the royals at one time and she has female-related causes under her portfolio. So yeah! She went through almost the same thing as Meghan so I wished she had said something! Sheesh.

  13. Mich says:

That scene could just as easily be interpreted as disgust for the media that caused all of this.

  14. kinkajoo says:

It wouldn’t surprise me, really. I think Camilla is the sort who decides who she likes, decides who she doesn’t, sticks with it for life, and don’t give a F who knows or cares.

  15. Nina says:

Camilla had beef with Diana and with Kate not so long ago.
And No we didn’t miss a beef .
Camilla and Kate were already super rude toward Meghan since the wedding day.
We’ve all seen these two shameless bullies mocking Harry and Meghan during the wedding.

    • Andrea says:

What beef did Camilla have with Kate?

    • Carol says:

Since the wedding, we’ve seen Camilla and Meghan together smiling and laughing on the balcony, smiling in a carriage ride, and smiling at that birthday lunch for Charles. Not rude and no beef.

    • Yvette says:

@Nina, could you please give us an example of a time when Camilla was rude to Meghan?

  16. Laura says:

I watched this clip this morning on the news app, I think it was ABC, and she seemed fine in the moment. I didn’t see anything that made me think there was beef. I felt like she wanted to say more but wisely didn’t.

My personal life is super boring (which is really nice after a rough few years) so I’m all about other people’s drama. I just don’t know if there is anything here. *shrug*

  17. Carmen AIC says:

yeah, her reaction was more for the question itself than for the subject matter. Her face goes all “really? You’re really asking me this right now?” So I’m not reading too much into this.

  18. Enny says:

Camilla had a really rough go of it with the British press. I mean, it wasn’t completely unwarranted – she was the other woman in Charles and Diana’s marriage, and Charles’ unfortunate desire to be her tampon was all anyone could talk about. She was the press punching bag for a long, long time. I’m sure there’s a part of Camilla who believes that Meghan and Harry have overreacted and should grow a thicker skin, and I’m sure she also even told Meghan and Harry that they should just stiff-upper-lip it and carry on with their duties. That probably didn’t sit well with Meghan and Harry – especially not Harry who, while he seems to have accepted Camilla because she makes his dad happy, has likely never totally forgiven her for the pain she caused his mother. An off-handed remark could have snowballed into larger grievances about the way they were handling the press situation. Camilla complained to Charles, and Charles was put in the awkward position of having to choose between Camilla and Harry, and after trying to stay neutral through the initial stages of the beef, he probably eventually sided with Camilla. And there you have it: “feud” and “lack of trust.”

    • Maria says:

“I’m sure there’s a part of Camilla who believes that Meghan and Harry have overreacted and should grow a thicker skin, and I’m sure she also even told Meghan and Harry that they should just stiff-upper-lip it and carry on with their duties.”

Kind of reminds me of Camilla complaining about the four press members outside her home during the courtship of Diana and Charles while around 30 press members were swarming around Coleherne Court to peek into Diana’s windows at that same time.

But I honestly don’t think Camilla is involved at all. Her reaction at the wedding wasn’t ideal but it wasn’t as blatantly tasteless as, say, Zara’s. I think that’s the extent of her involvement really.

    • Alexandria says:

Good theory but I still find it hard to believe Camilla interferes with Charles’ relationships with his sons. I have an easier time thinking she stays out of it and does her own thing in her house and she is civil to the sons and their wives, but not close, so as to avoid the games. Charles pursued her and if he didn’t, I think she would just do her own thing and spend time with whoever she wants after her divorce. I could be wrong of course!

  19. S808 says:

I’m sure they’re all not happy with H&M but a specific beef between Camilla and them? I don’t buy it. Camilla seems like a neutral party like Anne, Edward and Sophie.

  20. Susie Moloney says:

And the media won’t play. Is that because I’m in Canada, or did they take it down?

  21. Elizabeth says:

I can see this as total shade. But also maybe she was just annoyed by the question? I really don’t follow her enough to know if the latter is an option.

  22. Abena Asantewaa says:

I don’t see any beef or shade. I think Chris Ship is being mischeivous, in trying to fabricate another beef / feud for The Sussexes.

  23. LadyLou says:

Camilla is not the type for that. I think she was taken by surprise by that very direct question.

  24. Scorpio ♏️ Rants says:

I’m sure it was more of a “cmon, what did you expect me to say” kind of reaction than anything. I doubt Camilla had any sort of ongoing beef but i also expect she is annoyed at them for violating the BRF motto “never complain or explain”.

  25. kerwood says:

If this is true, I’ll be very disappointed. I like Camilla. I never thought she was the ogre that destroyed Charles and Diana’s marriage. THEY did that.

I can’t believe that Camilla has forgotten who and what she was a little while ago. She was a PARIAH. People used Diana’s nickname for her, ‘The Rottweiler’. And she’s got to know that it’s never a good idea to get involved in a family beef.

    • HK9 says:

I agree. I like Camilla too and since she’s always been smart about her status and played her position well, I too would be disappointed if she involved herself in this. Quite frankly, I think she of all people, knows that life is a funny thing and peoples roles in life do change. She knows right darn well that although H & M are on a different path, the are completely qualified & willing to help if Charles needs them to and she will act in a way that will facilitate what’s best for Charles, which will always mean behaving well with his sons and their families.

      • Your cousin Vinny says:

It sounds like you are saying if Camilla has a beef with the sussexes you will be disappointed. But if she does have some beef (emphasis on “if”) why are you assuming it’s not legitimate?

Harry himself said in his engagement interview people only think they know him. Family dynamics are complex and people often behave completely different behind closed doors.

If there is a problem between Camilla and the sussexes it’s definitely within the realm of possibility that it could be legitimate. We simply do not know because we do not know any of these people.

The way the press has treated the sussexes (mainly Meghan) is one thing but it doesn’t mean if Camilla or anyone in the family has a personal issue that they are automatically in the wrong and the sussexes are in the right.

        We just don’t know.

  26. Kathy Kack says:

I will never forgive her or Charles for whatever they did to Diana. Never. She is trash.

  27. Chaine says:

I doubt she ever spent much time with either or them or was close to them in any way, so she will miss them only to the emotional extent that she has to comfort Charles over their absence—which may not be much.

  28. Mtec says:

Meh. To me it just looked like it was such a random, out of place question for her to receive as she’s leaving an event, that it might have given her some pause, but it doesn’t look at all shady to me.

  29. Feeshalori says:

    Oh, spill that tea, Camilla!

  30. Ainsley7 says:

Much of Camilla’s reputation is down to Prince Charles’ PR. He’s always been insanely aggressive with his PR and he’s spent years repairing Camilla’s reputation. Most often at the expense of his sons. I don’t think Wooten’s article today mentioning them both is a coincidence. I think William and Harry did work things out and that Charles is still pretending that he had nothing to do with any of it even though it was all directly out of his PR playbook.

  31. MeghanNotMarkle says:

It seemed more like she was taken back by the question. I don’t get shade vibes here and really don’t think there’s a beef.

  32. MsIam says:

I think the RR are running out of new material now that the Sussexes have gone. What more can they say about what happened, now they are yammering about if there should be a comma after Meghan and Harry’s names in their titles.

  33. qtpi says:

I see that as annoyance with the question. From what I have only heard or read it seems that the sons do not have much to do with her. She probably sits out of a lot of this drama to keep the peace as best she can.

I still appreciate the shade she threw Trump at his last visit.

    • Dilettante says:

What shade did she throw Trump at his last visit?

      • Jaded says:

After the photogs took pictures of Trump and Melania with Charles and Camilla, Camilla turned her head back at the photogs and gave the most wicked wink. It’s hilarious.

  34. Becks1 says:

I think it definitely came across as shady, but I think it was probably aimed at the question/reporter and not the Sussexes. Like, what else was she going to say, “nope, not going to miss them”? But the pause does make it look worse and come across as shadier than I think it actually was.

People on twitter freaked out over Camilla last week or the week before because she made a comment at an event with Anne about how there was no rivalry, and people took that as a dig at the Sussexes. but it was clearly a reference to the colleges (Camilla was giving Anne an honor at a college in Scotland and I think Anne is the honorary head of the rival college or something.)

    • nic919 says:

Camilla gave the most positive welcome to Meghan when the engagement was announced, far more sincere than anything William or Kate said and her interactions with Meghan in public always seemed fine, so I would be surprised if there was any personal beef between them. I suspect it was more a reaction to the question, which was more intrusvie than the norm.

  35. Jerusha says:

I have the impression Camilla is super mellow and minds her own business by and large.

  36. Mads says:

It’s hard to tell with this family, they eat their own with no hesitation. The press look down on Meghan partly because she is an actress, but this bunch deserve Oscars with how they interact with each other in public while detesting some members in private. I have never brought into the line that both W & H are all accepting of Camilla, it’s just a Charles pr spin.

  37. Lowrider says:

Poor Harry. He verbally supported that rotweiller.

  38. Scollins says:

Remember who Camilla is at her core. A lying cheat. And a dull one at that. Of course she doesn’t like Meghan and probably dislikes Harry as well. After all, both brothers probably took a minute or two of attention from Charles. Nasty old Rottweiler.

  39. What. . .now? says:

While Camilla seems like a lot of fun, she did actively participate in ruining a marriage with two young children in it, and didn’t seem to GAF that whole time. So, I’m not willing to put any sort of Halo on Camilla because she’s and Charles seem happy.

All of that to say, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least, if there was some shade from her or not a lot of real warmth “behind the scenes” for H and M.

    • Elisa says:

      +1
Also, Camilla, Charles (and Carole) are the smart ones of the lot, so…I can totally see her advising Charles on certain things

  40. liriel says:

I don’t know but I appreciate she’s anti-PR. She is not warm and won’t display publicly how much she misses them.

  41. sassafras says:

I think it’s the same reaction that anyone has when their wealthy family members move away but you know they’ll be back regularly because they have the money to fly privately/ often. She knows they’re not going to be living off the grid in Bolivia. It’s Toronto for heaven’s sake.

  42. Blerg says:

Must be frustrating to be out doing a charitable event and be asked about personal family relationships. I would delight in hearing Camilla say what she actually thinks, such as “what kind of moronic question is that?” She seems spicy, that one. I kind of love her.

  43. Sasha says:

Does anyone really care what Camilla thinks? The pap had to ask her something and it certainly wasn’t going to be who does her hair.

  44. Ames says:

Who does this woman NOT beef with? Shorter list, that one.

  45. Florence says:

We have a phrase for what Chris Ship is doing: “shit-stirring”

  46. Catherine says:

I’ve said it a million times, but you all should take a harder look at Clarence House. Go back to the beginning and look at Clarence House.

    • Scollins says:

What do you mean? I’m not a regular royal watcher. Diana and now Harry & Meghan captures my attention. The rest … no.

  47. Louise says:

I mean would you be close to your dad’s mistress😕

    • Bobby the K says:

      That’s a good one.
I keep seeing John Cleese in her.

Why would she get her hands dirty by saying anything?

I think she was caught off guard as well, but at the same time should fully expect these kind of questions. It’s big new royal news.

  48. Sass says:

I took that more along the lines of “of course you’d ask me that, and of course I will, I’m on my way out, bye”

  49. February Pisces says:

I think the reporter was gaslighting for a reaction, and he most certainly got one. But I think she was caught off guard more than anything, and she looks more pissed off at the reporter. The press really don’t have any shame anymore, it’s like they think they can do what they want. I don’t think she had much to do with what was going on, but she’s probably pissed off they have left, but she’ll get over it. I also can’t imaging them seeing that much of each other anyway. Don’t camilla and Charles live separately anyway?

  50. Amber says:

I think Camilla understands the Sussexes’ contempt for the press, as they were also gross to her in the old days. I think that’s what the annoyance is about in this clip. I’ve more or less come around to Camilla–people blame her for ruining the marriage but she and Charles bear equal responsibility for the affair. Diana had affairs of her own, too, so while she is in many ways the ‘wronged party,’ the marriage was doomed to begin with. Because Charles has always loved Camilla, and would have much rather married her in the first place. Diana walked into a ticking time bomb of a situation, and to her credit, managed to turn her feelings of rejection into deep empathy for those whom society has overlooked. I really think she would not have become the Peoples Princess if she had not suffered this humiliating rejection at Charles’ hands, they are inextricably linked.
Camilla is a reasonably shrewd person, very practical and common-sense in her approach to things. Therefore I think it’s unlikely she would purposefully throw shade on her husband’s son and daughter-in-law. I think she resented the way the press asked her to comment on this story. That said, I also don’t think she has any great affection for Harry or Meghan.

    • A says:

I think Camilla’s one big mistake was involving herself with Charles Windsor. I don’t know the details about her marriage, but it seems to me that she and her own husband had an “understanding” and aside from that had a genuinely good marriage and relationship with each other. Charles is the one who didn’t put much effort into his own marriage, and I think he should shoulder the blame for what happened. And people can say whatever they like about Diana–that she cheated too, that she wasn’t some angel, that she wasn’t as wronged as she liked to make herself out to be–but the fact of the matter is that she entered into an unequal marriage, with a husband and a family that openly condescended to her during her many struggles and fundamentally refused to support her. She was not on equal footing with her husband, and she did not have nearly as much power as the BRF did, especially when it came to commandeering the public opinion. People who choose to criticize her for “being no angel” have to do so with the full understanding of the circumstances, and it deeply irks me that people choose to disregard all of this in favour of some misguided attempt to be “fair” to both parties. Charles and the Queen knew full well what was going on, and they made the decision to not support her in the way that she clearly needed. Diana fought back in the only way she knew how, by leveraging her incredible popularity to spin a narrative that could protect her, because her fear was that the BP cogs would try to make her out to be some irrational stereotype of a scorned woman when she had every right in the world to be angry with how she had been treated by Charles and the family at large.

    • Scollins says:

Sorry, @Amber, but that’s like saying Harry is a good person because of Charles and Camilla’s rancid affair. Charles with Camilla’s help ‘doomed’ Diana’s marriage. They broke up two families damaging children out of their own selfishness. Camilla and Charles are exactly who they’ve shown us to be at their core. Her response to the press asking her about Harry & Meghan, which was clearly expected, says it all. She is still a horrible human.

  51. A says:

By all accounts, Camilla was one of the few people who Meghan and Harry didn’t have beef with in all the time they were there with the RF. When Meghan first got engaged, she was notably effusive with her praise. “America’s loss is our gain,” and all that. She was slated to appear with the Sussexes for support at some even but had to cancel at the last minute because she had a cold. I don’t think it’s Camilla’s style to concern herself with any type of shade or behind the scenes machinations. She seems like the type of person who’d go with the flow, but doesn’t take any sh-t, and she has learned to not cop to anyone’s games in the press. I’ll bet 10 Canadian dollars that she’s gonna be out there on Vancouver Island at some point, sitting on some beach chair with a book and getting some scenery and fresh air. Out of everyone in the RF, she seems like the one decent human being at this point, which is absolutely not what any of us expected, I’d imagine.

    • Scollins says:

While I picture Camilla in her royal home taking trash and wishing the worst for everyone, not just H&M, to anyone who will listen.
