A ‘Hamilton’ movie with the Broadway cast is coming from Disney in 2021

A year ago, Hamiton broke a Broadway box-office record becoming the first show to make more than $4,000,000 in ticket sales in one week. The show has forever entered the pop culture lexicon. I am one of two people who hasn’t seen it, but I recognize lines from it, and they’ve even made it (slightly altered) into book titles. If you are the other person in the universe who hasn’t seen the show yet, you’re in luck, because while a movie project has been talked about before, we’ve gotten official confirmation that it’s happening:

Movie theaters aren’t throwing away their shot to have “Hamilton” on the big screen. Disney is bringing a film of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical sensation with the original Broadway cast to cinemas in North America on Oct. 15, 2021.

The movie version isn’t an adaptation in the vein of Miranda’s upcoming “In the Heights,” but rather a “live capture” of a stage performance. It was shot at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in Manhattan before founding members began to depart the production.

Rights to the stage film went for an eye-popping $75 million, in a deal brokered by Endeavor Content on behalf of Miranda, three individuals close to the negotiations told Variety. Endeavor shopped the project around Hollywood, presenting to studios including Warner Bros. before Disney nabbed it. . . .

“I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations — ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘Beauty and The Beast,’ ‘Aladdin,’” Miranda said. “I’m so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of ‘Hamilton’ — a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater. We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of ‘Hamilton’ to the largest audience possible.”

Finally! I’m looking forward to seeing the show in the comfort of my own living room, as I doubt I’ll ever be able to get tickets! This is going to break all sorts of records, too. I think it’s great (and smart) that this movie will be a performance of the original Broadway cast. No one would be happy with another cast, no matter how great they were. l am not surprised that Disney managed to get the film rights, both because of the size of the company’s wallet, but also because Lin-Manuel has worked with them on recent projects, collaborating on the songs in Moana and costarring in Mary Poppins Returns. He also worked on the music in the cantina scene in The Force Awakens and had a cameo in The Rise of Skywalker. Plus he lends his voice to Gizmoduck in the Ducktales reboot.

There are plenty of fun Hamilton-related clips on Youtube to keep you entertained for the next 618 days:

Here’s the cast performing at the Tony Awards in 2016, with an introduction by President and Mrs. Obama (who both saw Lin-Manuel give a White House performance of a song from the show when it was still a work-in-progress):

Last June, Ellen sent 9-year-old Hamilton superfan Macey Hensley to the new Hamilton museum in Chicago where Lin-Manuel gave her a tour (and she taught him a thing or two).

I cannot wait. This is going to be amazing. I have seen Hamilton, but not on broadway, and I’m sad that I was never able to see the original cast. This is such a treat for theater fans.

  2. Valiantly Varnished says:

The theater geek in me JUMPED OUT when Lin-Manuel tweeted about this last week. I am SO excited. Hamilton is my favorite musical.

  3. Astrid says:

I don’t care for singing and dancing. I’d rather see a Sci-fi movie. To each his own. So yeah, I’m the other person who hasn’t seen Hamilton.

  4. Alissa says:

I’m so excited for this!!! I saw it on Broadway with only a couple of performers from the original cast, and I saw the travel show in Hartford too.

I don’t know why it’s nearly two years out since they filmed this years ago, though.

I read somewhere that this is so the touring companies have time to finish their runs (or just visit more cities in general.) I also imagine there may be some promotional stuff that goes with it and maybe it was hard to get everyone’s schedule aligned for fall 2020. The 2021 date stood out to me too though, but the touring thing makes sense.

Hello. I am the other person who hasn’t seen it. I know every song by heart though. I’m so excited by this and also not surprised that it’s happening because

    1. In The Heights is now a movie
    2. LMM got with Disney early, and I think it was specifically for this. It was just a matter of timing.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

I knew all the songs by heart before I saw it too. I saw it here in Chicago with Wayne Brady as Aaron Burr and it was awesome. But I have seen quite a bit of the original Broadway cast via the PBS special they did. I highly recommend watching that.

So happy to hear this! I saw the show but not with the original cast. There’s a bootleg version floating around on YouTube but the quality isn’t the greatest.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

Just watch the PBS special on it. It has most the major performances included with the original cast.

    • Dara says:

Can I give a shout-out to the first White House performance that Quimby mentions? It’s on YouTube, or maybe the PBS website, somewhere and it’s a must-see. It’s just Lin-Manuel and the piano player (whatshisname, the one hooking up with Michelle Williams) and you can tell it’s still very new, but it’s amazing. Talk about historic. I would have loved to have been in THAT room when it happened.

      • JanetDR says:

I have watched that very compelling clip about a jillion times! It’s so goooooood! It was the only thing I allowed myself to watch before we saw the (touring) show. It was the best thing I have ever seen.

  7. Veronica S. says:

Honestly, the most shocking part is that it took this long. I was expecting this sort of news two years back.

  8. Insomniac says:

I haven’t seen it either. Will be happy to pay for a movie ticket instead of shelling out hundreds of dollars for a theater seat.

  9. Sayrah says:

I haven’t seen it either so I’m glad the original cast is doing a movie

  10. Mia4s says:

    *Endless scream of joy!!!*

I saw it, but not with the original cast. I’m actually going again in the spring to take some family. I know that I’m enormously privileged to be able to that, so I’m thrilled they’re releasing it like this for a wider audience. Seriously don’t miss it!

  11. lucy2 says:

I haven’t seen it yet either. The Broadway tickets are so expensive! And I looked into a touring show at another nearby city, and they were even MORE expensive! I’d still like to see it in the theater at some point, but a filmed version with the original cast will be great.

  12. Mel says:

I’m so excited for it! I think it took this long because LMM has A LOT on his plate and he wanted to work on ITH first. Also on Twitter he said it’s not just the show filmed. It was a bit tweaked. I think he wants to do it justice. I saw it on the West End and honestly, even without the original cast members it was PERFECT. It’s a testament to how good the show itself is. The OG cast members are the cherry on top but there’s a lot of thought into the casting process. Every single company is fantastic.

  13. lanne says:

I saw it this summer on Broadway–even without the original cast, it was amazing!!! It’s coming to Atlanta next month and I will try to see it again here.

  14. Laura-j says:

    I love Lin Manuel Miranda… he’s lovely.

  15. Catting says:

Loved this way before I ever saw it, just from the music and clips of Lin being Lin. Was lucky enough to see it once so far, but not with the original cast, so will definitely still see the movie! Also lucky that my Christmas gift this year were tickets to see it a second time, this with my Hamilton-virgin boyfriend. 🙂

  16. Cee says:

This is great for international audiences. I remember waiting YEARS before being able to purchase tickets to Wicked on my trips to NYC. I guess I’ll catch Hamilton on Broadway in 2030 lol

  17. The Recluse says:

I haven’t seen it either, so this is exciting.

  18. JennEricaMS says:

While rewatching the performance at the Tony Awards in the embedded clip, I was reminded of how thoughtful and considerate the cast were that night. The original performance has the soldiers carrying rifles and simulating war but that night they chose to forego them because the Pulse nightclub shooting had happened early that morning. I was also reminded of how much I miss the Obamas, so very, very much.

  19. Jerusha says:

I haven’t seen the play, but have listened to the original cast recording many times. Love it and so looking forward to this!
