Lizzy Caplan saw a woman at the movies feed her husband popcorn with a spoon like a baby

I know this sounds like a non-story, but I wanted to talk about sneaking stuff into the movies (I love that topic!) and how amazing Castle Rock season two is. It’s on Hulu! If you like horror and/or supernatural shows Castle Rock is phenomenal and has some incredible performances, specifically from Lizzy, Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), Tim Robbins and Yusra Warsama, who is new to me and I will be watching for her. There are moments that made me yell at the screen, and I was blown away by it, it was so good. Lizzy deserves an Emmy for that, but given how Bates Motel (SO underrated) was overlooked for five freaking seasons I’m not getting my hopes up.

Anyway Lizzie was on Conan, where she talked about filming in rural Massachusetts for Castle Rock. She said that the women were like Elizabeth Warren cosplayers and that she went to the movies often because there wasn’t much to do. Then she described this weird scene of a woman bringing in her own parmesan cheese and feeding her husband popcorn with a spoon.

On the local people in New England
They’re very nice. The town I was in is a fantastic place to live if you’re a mid 50s well-to-do white couple with a beautiful golden retriever. It was like Elizabeth Warren cosplay. Very pleasant not necessarily my vibe.

On seeing weird things at the movies
I would go to the movies a lot. There was just nothing to do. I saw some weird stuff at the movies. All of the movie theaters have those reclining seats that go flat so you’re seeing people as if they were in their beds at home, which makes it even strangers.

This woman had a big bucket of popcorn and she spilled out half of it then from her big purse she took [what] looked like a Kraft parmesan cheese and she shook the whole thing into this half bucket of popcorn. She reached into her purse and pulled out a spoon and ate it and would feed her husband. He didn’t even have to look at her, he just opened his mouth.

50-something liberal northerners with dogs are my people (hell I’m practically one already) and I would love to live up in Massachusetts. As for that lady spoon feeding her husband, that’s bizarre but it’s also within movie theater etiquette. She bought popcorn, she just had her own toppings and utensils for it. I mentioned in our story about Macy Gray sneaking booze into the movies that I regularly bring in my own water or soda. The prices are exorbitant at the movies! I believe in buying popcorn because that supports them and their margins are low, but drinks should be cheaper. I will die on this hill!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen at the movies? I’ll never forget the time I was watching Chicago and a woman got a phone call and answered it right there in the theater without even trying to whisper. She had a five minute conversation that started with “Oh hi, I’m at the movies.”

Here’s that segment from her interview. In the first segment they joke that she’s dressed like David Byrne. She is! I have to say something about the dates on this interview. The segment below was posted online on February 20th, but the first segment is dated back in November, so this is probably an older interview that aired when Castle Rock season 2 came out.

I stopped watching Bates Motel after the mother’s scary rapist brother made an appearance and it seemed was going to be introduced into the show. It seemed like there would be a lot of raping and I just can’t abide that. (I’m sure he was murdered or something but still.) Outlander was super rapey too. I don’t get how people can watch stuff like that

      Spoiler for Bates Motel:
He did get introduced into the show but he didn’t rape her. I haven’t really watched Outlander, but that’s what I gave up on Game of Thrones. There is way too much rape on TV I agree.

Thank you so much! I might go back to it if it’s still available. The premise sounded so interesting, and the actress playing the mother (flaking on her name but she is a big star) did such a great job playing crazy manipulative mom! Who is also strangely sympathetic at times.

Massachusetts resident and I can say with confidence that some areas really are like Liz Warren cosplay conventions (in the best sort of way). Even in the city I live in which is considered pretty hipster-y and young. Come to MA, Celebitchy!

Mass native here! We are definitely a different breed up here! I live in a town exactly as Lizzo describes it and I love it. Also we always bring snacks for our kids, if not we would easily spend 50+ dollars on top of the crazy price for the tickets.

My husband and I get a kick out of feeding each other hahah. In the car, he always drives (because I have a physical hip problem not because of chauvinism lol), and I think it’s so funny to feed him a bite of something at a time while he drives. Or pop grapes in his mouth one at a time. I could totally see us feeding each other in a theater just because we are goofy.

Bates Motel was excellent! I didn’t really want the storyline to continue after the second-to-last season, I was afraid they would ruin it. But the last season was excellent! Well done. And Vera Farmiga is a powerhouse.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt more strongly about someone deserving an acting award than for Lizzy Caplan in Castle Rock. I think she got overlooked completely? Or maybe the show wasn’t eligible yet, but whatever the case she’s incredible. The show has its flaws, but it’s watchable and entertaining and I 100% recommend.

She’s one of my girl-crushes. Love her.

I loved her in Masters of Sex.

We like the same! Bates should have statues. Stunning performances and Castle Rock! Season one is riddled with Easter eggs and Skarsgard is… beautifully Skarsgard, but season two is in your face Stephen King and it’s glorious. It’s beyond about time for his tv films to be masterfully produced, and they’ve done it. And Lizzy is spectacular. How she suppresses then allows volcanic action is quite startling.

I watched season 1, but am not a huge King fan so a lot of it went over my head (plus I was doing other stuff while watching most episodes) It sounds like season 2 is worth watching though? And I like Lizzy Caplan, maybe I’ll check it out.

      • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Season two is definitely worth a look. Lizzy’s character is like all of King’s characters who live in his head. It’s really good and it sets up a third season quite nicely.

Bates Motel was one of the best shows ever. Vera Farmiga was robbed of every award.

Well, I don’t see anything weird about the lady having her own popcorn toppings in her purse. I mean I’m Mexican and even the fact I live in Japan I always take my bottle of Salsa Valentina (spicy salsa) with me to the movies. My husband who is Japanese loves spicy popcorn too. I also take my own soda with me because the cola at the movie theater is rubbish but I always buy a big bucket of popcorn (^_^)

I’m just gonna assume his arms were paralyzed, or she had already seen the movie and he hadn’t – Otherwise, why does she have to miss bits of the movie over and over to feed him while he doesn’t have to take his eyes off the screen?

I spend the majority of my time with the mentally and physically disabled and my first thought went to his having some kind of physical disability as well.

    God, the visual here, LOL.

I loved Lizzy in “Truth Be Told” on Apple +. Fantastic storyline! Her and Aaron Paul are just great actors 🙂

Currently on Bates Motel season 3, so far so good!

What’s the strangest thing I’ve seen at the movies? A couple that brought their baby to the movies and the baby cried on and off throughout The. Entire. Movie. Let me be clear: I’m not blaming the baby.

Also seen: a child than ran up and down the aisles for a good chunk of the movies… a woman that appeared to be translating a film to her companion… a woman that fell asleep and snored loudly… and one time I saw a mouse. The mouse was at the newest, fanciest theatre in town too.
