Donald Trump adopts a ‘newly somber & sedate tone’ to discuss the pandemic

United States President Donald J. Trump participates in a news briefing by members of the Coronavirus Task Force at the White House

All signs point to the fact that Donald Trump wasn’t taking anything about the coronavirus pandemic seriously in March because the virus was devastating “blue states,” aka states he was going to lose in the 2020 election. He actively wanted/still wants to punish blue states and states with Democratic governors. He actively wants people to die because those people don’t agree with him politically. Now that all indications point to a significant spread of the virus in so-called “red states,” aka Trump states, suddenly the pandemic is a serious thing. At yesterday’s White House briefing, Trump suddenly tried on a new tone: serious leader who was taking this sh-t seriously.

President Trump and the physicians advising the federal pandemic response on Tuesday delivered a bleak outlook for the novel coronavirus’s spread across the country, predicting a best-case scenario of 100,000 to 240,000 fatalities in the United States and summoning all Americans to make additional sacrifices to slow the spread.

Trump adopted a newly somber and sedate tone — and contradicted many of his own previous assessments of the virus — as he instructed Americans to continue social distancing, school closures and other mitigation efforts for an additional 30 days and to think of the choices they make as matters of life and death.

Trump and his coronavirus task force members said that community mitigation practices in place for the past 15 days have worked and that extending them is essential. The mathematical modeling the White House presented suggests doing so could save hundreds of thousands of lives. Without community mitigation, the models predict, 1.5 million to 2.2 million Americans could die of covid-19, the disease the virus causes, though no time frames or other details were provided for the figures.

“Our country is in the midst of a great national trial unlike any it has ever faced before,” Trump said at an early evening news conference. He went on to call on every citizen to “make sacrifices” and every business to fulfill its “patriotic duty” to brace for even tougher days ahead.

“This is going to be a very painful — very, very painful two weeks,” Trump said. Sometime after April, he added, the country could transition back to normal with businesses reopening and people returning to work. “It’s going to be like a burst of light, I really think, and I hope,” Trump said. “Our strength will be tested, our endurance will be tried, but America will answer with love and courage and ironclad resolve.”

[From WaPo]

Don’t give this a–hole a cookie for suddenly play-acting a somber vibe. Sh-t has only gotten real for him now because Jared Kushner (I assume) told him that some of thousands of people who die are going to be Trump supporters. The Trump All-White House is still screwing over every governor and actively making this pandemic worse.

He didn’t actively sh*t himself for once while slavering over the microphone, I’ll give him that.

      • JanetDR says:

This made me happy this morning, although happy is a relative term these days. Thank you for providing a place that entertains as well as informs! I don’t know how I would manage without my celebitchies!

    • Megan2 says:

      Beautiful comment. Perfection.

    • Liz version 700 says:

Thank you that is a perfect comment. It makes me so angry that people are cheering on his new tone. His refusal to act early and with an ounce of compassion or decency has cost thousands of lives and some are cheering him on because the violins on the titanic sound lovely.

    • Dierski says:

Perfect comment – my thoughts exactly.

  2. Tate says:

I have no words left for trump supporters except to say that you had a hand in people losing their lives by voting for this incompetent, sadistic bag of trash. Please own that and know that.

    • Esmom says:

They don’t. They are vehemently insisting it’s the states’ faults for not managing their responses properly. And the Dems’ fault for “distracting” Trump with impeachment. As if Trump was a cooperative participant in the process. As if public officials can only manage one thing at a time.

      • Jess says:

Plus they keep talking about Obama and the swine flu, as if that has anything to do with Trump’s reaction, and still going on about regular flu deaths for whatever reason. I can always tell what Trump or conservative sites are saying on a daily basis because a lot of my Facebook friends repeat that same shit word for fkng word and act like they thought of it, it’s so funny to see and they don’t even realize how stupid they look.

      • Mac says:

Trump was so distracted by impeachment that he had to keep golfing and holding Nazi rallies. Here is the complete list:

    • Chrissy says:

      This!!!

    • whatWHAT? says:

well, take comfort in that most of his supporters were buying what he was selling regarding the virus (not that serious, just like the flu, go out and BUY BUY BUY) so, if there’s any justice in the universe, THEY will be the demographic that has the most victims.

tots and pears, and all that…

as for the “distraction of impeachment”…if you’re so f*cking stupid and inept that you can’t handle two things at once, YOU SHOULDN’T BE PRESIDENT. Thanks for saying it out loud, turtleman.

      • Tate says:

Florida is going to be a disaster. That idiot Governor won’t make a decision without trump’s approval.

    • Liz version 700 says:

Some of them know though. They are much quieter on friends’ FB pages. They make these asinine arguments but a few of them are starting to realize their guy is not so great

    • mander says:

I agree with this view wholeheartedly. Recently ended a friendship for this very reason.

      • Giddy says:

It may be cold, but anyone who is still a Trump supporter is someone I don’t care about. They didn’t give a damn about me, so right back atcha! May their tests all be positive and may there not be ventilators available. May they know at least a fraction of the fear and terror that their dear leader has given out to others. May they know shame and may they never smile again.

  3. Jerusha says:

Adjusted his drugs, that’s all. F donald trump, F jared kushner, F ivanka trump, F junior and fredo and melanie and every fucking enabler. May they all burn in Hell, if there is one.

    • B n A fn says:

@jeruesha, Totally agree with all your FFFFFFF’s. I’ll have one more, F them all. Moscow Mitch, Nunez, Cruze, Lindsey, Tiffany, Hannity, Rush L and all the ones I forget, I hope they all rot in hell. They have blood 🩸 on their hands.

    • ReneeM says:

Jerusha, I was thinking the same thing. His head doctor finally changed his medication OR Melania made him start taking it again.

  4. Mac says:

Trump is still screwing over Democratic governors. Like sending Illinois the wrong type of masks. Indiana, with just 1,700 cases got everything they asked for, as did Florida.

    • Nic919 says:

He needs to be criminally charged. Blood is on his hands with actions like that.

    • Sierra says:

Blue states should refuse to give their income to US Government now.

    • Veronica S. says:

Warren just called out the government for interfering with MA shipments, too. There need to be some fairly serious court cases brought against the federal government after this is all over. This has made it very clear that states need more power when dealing with a corrupt government.

  5. Other Renee says:

When the comments on the DF are mainly hateful and venomously anti Orange, you know the tide has finally turned against him.

I hope every single ad that Biden runs features Drump spewing his stupid remarks like “This is all a hoax to keep me from being re-elected” over and over.

    • 10KTurtle says:

It’s because all their international readers can see he’s going to be the reason the rest of the world can’t recover because Americans will keep reinfecting everybody.

    • Bella DuPont says:

Those ads need to start running NOW. So that as people are suffering, they can see/feel the reason in real time. Hopefully, eventually, people begin to associate him with intense suffering and vice versa. Like Pavlov’s dogs.

      • Alexandria says:

Bella yes! Simple but can be effective on both simplistic and intelligent people!

  6. BlueSky says:

The press needs to stop following for this. They always set the bar low for him. He will be back to his usual crazy this week. All it takes is a couple of hours of downing 10 cheeseburgers while watching Faux news and he will back to his unhinged self in no time.

  7. Lightpurple says:

Unlike anything we faced before because we have never faced anything while being governed by a treasonous, bigoted lunatic, his evil, self-promoting, thieving daughter, and a Senate devoid of morals, sense of constitutional duty, or even common sense.

ETA and this is at least the FIFTH time we have heard of a “new, more serious tone.” He is still hoarding equipment, still demanding governors and reporters fellate him publicly, and will be back to hurling insults by noon while the GOP heavily promotes Ivanka for inventing paid family leave, something the rest of the world has had for decades but we don’t have at all.

  8. Nic919 says:

He still comes off as a buffoon and shouldn’t be talking during these press conferences. When you compare him to any other leader he still is an idiot. The scarf comment was stupid and trying to say that only 100k are going to die because it could have been 2 million is insane. He could have done something months ago. This is all his fault.

Americans have gotten used to his nonsense and lowered the bar. To anyone looking from the outside he remains an utter incompetent fool. Outside of Bolsonaro, no one is as bad as the orange menace.

The US media has failed Americans. They are trying to normalize a malignant narcissistic sociopath who can never change. They must stop pretending that his tone is important. Dump is saying that 100,000 Americans dying is the best case scenario. Who gives a fuck about his tone? That’s worse than the total deaths for the Vietnam war!! It was preventable too!! I know people can’t meet in the streets but the outrage needs to be ongoing here. This is a massacre.

  9. StormsMama says:

  10. 10KTurtle says:

I don’t know if we could call that gaslighting-fest “taking it seriously,” but kudos to whichever babysitter sat him down and got through to him to STOP TALKING S*** ABOUT THE NURSES. Is that you, Hope? Now do “not blackmailing governors of American states.” Maybe even “expressing condolences to the 4,000 families who have lost a loved one.” Why do we have to ask for this?

    • Esmom says:

I know, right? He’s shown time and again that he’ll be back to his insults and petty grievances and self-promotion again in no time. If he isn’t already.

  11. Eleonor says:

Him and Bolsonaro are criminals period.

  12. TheMummy says:

I don’t get why everyone is saying he was somber and serious. He still bragged about ratings, still rehashed his 2016 victory, it was still totally bombastic and he still lied about a hundred times. He still insulted people. Still puffed up his chest and strutted around. Is the bar THIS low really? Does Flippin everyone have Stockholm syndrome?!?

  13. Edna says:

How can his approval rating be at 49%? Who are the people being polled? It terrifies me that people are that stupid to think he’s doing a great job at handling this crisis. My fear/nightmare is that the 🤡 will get re-elected because of this. Dear God, please deliver us from this madness.

    • MsIam says:

We don’t know when those polls were actually taken. I think the results might be different now.

    • Hollah says:

Polls are a lagging indicator. I also read it was 1,000 people polled and it was taken before the $hit hit the fan. I’m sure the numbers would look very different by this weekend.

    • Esmom says:

The thing that made me feel slightly better about the poll numbers is hearing that presidents generally all have higher poll numbers during a crisis. George H.W. Bush’s rose to the high 80s after the Gulf War ended and W’s were in the 90s after 9/11. So Trump’s 50% is abysmal by these metrics.

  14. MsIam says:

You guys are on fire here with the comments! I have nothing to add, I’m still trying to comprehend the reason for the My Pillow guy showing up. For those of you in the US see you at the polls in November!

    • Jerusha says:

My Pillow guy is a big trumper. trump is pushing him to run for governor of Minnesota in 2022.

  15. Sharonk says:

He is as horrible, pompous and incompetent as ever.
The U.K. daily mail had an interesting article that suggested the only reason he’s changing his opinion is that his “ advisors” told him he would lose the election if too many people died, that would be worse than a economic collapse.
I still can’t get tested can you?
Please vote this clown out in Nov. I hope history judges him harshly.

    • Christin says:

It has taken five to seven days for anyone at my workplace to receive test results.

Several in the community cannot get a test at all, even if they were in close contact with someone who tested positive. It has been absolutely atrocious.

      • Swack says:

People at my son-in-law work went through a drive through testing site and it took 5 days. Since his family live with me he had to go live at his brothers (who is single and easy to isolate from) until the all clear on the tests were given. Luckily they were all negative.

      • MaryContrary says:

@Swack: it’s really important to realize that just because someone receives a negative result does NOT mean they don’t have the virus. There are many, many false negatives with the current tests. Please-if someone is exhibiting symptoms-even if their test comes back negative-assume they DO have the virus.

  16. Jerusha says:

I guess everyone’s heard that he appointed jon voight and mike huckabee to the Kennedy Center Board? What, no James Woods?🤢🤮

  17. KellyRyan says:

How long before he returns to Twitter stuck on crazy? News coverage of Sicko Psycho being given attention again led me directly to the weather channel. Gov Newsom barely tolerates him. He was in CA to tour the wild fire damage in northern California which was caused not by Drumpfs xyz explanation but by PG&E which has admitted to involuntary manslaughter to 84 deaths.

    • Valerie says:

I give it less than a day. A few hours, at most. Someone will refute him and he’ll go off about the Lamestream Media and how everyone needs to be nicer to him. Fucking wimp.

  18. Texas says:

And honestly, it terrified me and depressed me at the same time. If he is admitting that it will be bad, how truly bad is it going to get?

And then I read a something from the owner of a company that I buy from, talking about how God has been planning this for a long time and to read your Bible to understand. They think it’s the end of the world. I needed something for my horse from them and I just couldn’t let myself buy from them again.

    Scary times.

    • Margetta says:

So here’s some real CRAY for you. I’m in blue as blue gets New England. A teacher at our school just quit and said, “This is the Rapture and I am going home to prepare in prayer. I no longer require this job or money. I am submitting to God and will wait for the skies to open. I go willingly to Jesus and you should all prepare for the same.” This lady was always a bit quirky, not not in this way! But she out and said it and BELIEVES it. WTAF?!

      I KID YOU NOT.

      • Jerusha says:

        Good luck with that.

      • Christin says:

Yet the Bible plainly states that not even Jesus knows the exact time or hour. It is also supposed to occur when not fully expected, yet people claim to know it’s imminent.

      • Arpeggi says:

JFC!!! It’s going to be interesting in 2 months…

I know most christians understand that the bible shouldn’t be taken literally, that it’s all metaphors, but I’m always flabbergasted when I hear about someone who believes all of it

  19. Sean says:

I, for one would like to thank Donald Trump for his ability and foresight to navigate such uncharted waters.

Because hospitals are understaffed, under equipped and being overrun at the moment my sister who just graduated from nursing school along with her classmates are being immediately transferred to Intensive Care Units without an official orientation because they need the bodies.

Thank you, Mr. President *salutes* (with what fingers you can determine)

  20. Valerie says:

In other words, they upped one dose and decreased the other.

  21. Hollah says:

The scary part is 100,00 – 240,000 is best case scenario with everyone practicing mitigation. There are still plenty of states who do not have state-at-home orders in place and their numbers are growing at an alarming rate or there is barely and testing happening. Florida Governor is passing the buck to Trump and saying he doesn’t need to close because the federal gov’t hasnt asked him to yet. Trump will never ask because he’s already laying the groundwork to pass as much blame for this off on anyone else he can. It’s gonna be such a mess.

I’m still burned about his indignant tone when he said, “the federal government is not a shipping clerk!” when asked early on how he was going to help hospitals get ventilators. The federal government is whatever the tax paying citizens need it to be when in a time of crisis! He really thinks he is above all this and his wealth and “fame” will save him.

  22. Margetta says:

For all those people who said (generally–not here) I was being hyperbolic when I said (when Trump was running and got elected) that this was the end of the world as we know it, that he would kill many of us, that he was a Hitler, and that he was an insane fascist…I give 3.5 billion middle fingers and a big FU.

I like being proven right with the best of ’em, but this…this many of us saw coming and were roundly made fun of for it. I’ll still enjoy that I was right, but I’m going to have to wrap all that up in the grief, sadness, and suffering that comes with it. I can’t stand that the general intelligence level of people is SO. LOW.

  23. B n A fn says:

I was just thinking, how many of 45’s base who went to his rallies as late as March to hear him saying this is a hoax and dems is using virus against him for political reasons who did get sick and how many died because they believed his lies. I read somewhere that ‘Fox 🦊 fools’ are being sued because some of their listeners took their word news about the virus was a hoax and ended up dead.

  24. jferber says:

Can’t even read the story about mr. blood-on-his-small-hands, but everyone should write to their Congress person since Dems control the House and demand that mail-in-voting be included in the next Corona aid package or there will BE NO NEXT Corona Aid package. The reason is Trump wants low voter turnout, which he’s said helps him. He doesn’t want mail-in votes, but we must have them to defeat this monster. Write/call your Congress person today and tell them: Mail in Votes for November or no new Corona aid package. Please! Without the House of Representatives, no new bill can pass.

  25. Quincytoo says:

Meh He can lick toilets for all I care

  26. Frida_K says:

So he didn’t fling poo like a rabid monkey?

He managed to not make it into a me-me-me praise fest?

He didn’t hiss like he’s cosplaying Lord Voldemort talking about a hoaxssssssss?

    Wow, how PRESIDENTIAL!

Let’s give him a bigly boy round of applause and get him some hamberders!

    ….

Actually, not. Let’s ignore him and try our best to hold ourselves and our country together so that this ends as soon as humanly possible.

He’s garbage and he’s just making things worse.

  27. Christin says:

    Ratings must have slipped.

  28. Jerusha says:

Where oh where are the posters from 2016 who were going to vote trump because they hated Killery or he was gonna help their bottom line? How’s that working out for ya? Do let us know.

  29. Elizabeth says:

He is a nightmare and the Republican Party continue to be authoritarian, heartless enablers of a sexual predator. An absolute clown.

Fellow Americans, call your Democratic/progressive reps who are up for election or re-election. Lots of ways to get involved remotely. Get in the fight! It’s very empowering. I was a field organizer for a presidential campaign (unfortunately they dropped out) and it was exhausting but awesome.
