‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ will end after part four later this year

In more Netflix’s cleaning house news, the dark teen supernatural series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, will be finishing with a “part four” run later this year. The successful Riverdale spinoff centers around Sabrina the Teenage Witch as she straddles the line between her human side and her witchy side. And, like most CW content, a whole cast of beautiful people populate both worlds. The show was picked up by Netflix after originally being developed for The CW. The show was renewed for a 16-episode order that would be split between parts three and four. The announcement from Netflix that the show would finish with part four comes on the heels of showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s other Riverdale spinoff, Katy Keene, being cancelled as well as Netflix announcing the end of other popular shows Ozark, The Kominsky Method and Dead to Me.

Netflix is wrapping up another show.

The streamer announced Wednesday that Archie-verse drama The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will end when it returns later this year for “part four.”

“Working on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been an incredible honor from day one. The cast, beginning with Kiernan as everyone’s favorite teen witch, has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show,” said showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “I’m also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it. We can’t wait for everyone to see part four.”

The show was renewed in late 2018 for “parts three and four” — aka seasons three and four — as part of a 16-episode order. Sources note that Netflix splits up seasons into two parts for select shows as part of a budget-conscious approach to select programming. While Netflix, like other streamers, does not release viewership information, Sabrina’s first “part” had a favorable 80 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (and a 90 percent among critics). After its first three parts, it now has an 84 percent rating among critics and a 69 percent with viewers.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I really enjoyed parts one and two of Sabrina. I watch as much witch content as I can and Sabrina had a nice balance of lore and super dark content. Not overly gratuitous, but certainly not your usual teen-show fare. That said, I did not realize until researching this story that’d I forgotten to watch part three, which began streaming in January of this year! Looking at the percentages from THR, maybe my subconscious was protecting me.

I did not watch, nor do I know anything about Katy Keene, but for the rest of the cancelled shows, my guess is that Netflix and other content providers will be shifting away from dark content in the aftermath of the pandemic, at least for their series. I suspect people only have to open their front door to encounter that so they’re going to want entertainment that makes the forget about the depressing realities of life. Sabrina, of course, is not an honest reality, but it dealt with adolescents battling an establishment, some of whom were parental figures, with an archaic, destructive ideology. The youths ultimately sought to oust the tyrannical leader, who was fine to watch them all die, to live a more harmonious existence. So maybe not our actual reality, but a metaphor at least. I’m sorry to see Sabrina go but the story had done quite a bit and it probably is time to say goodbye. The whole cast was fun to watch as they chewed up the scenery so if this frees them up for bigger and better things, more power to them.

Dead To Me was pretty good and I binge it in its entirety. But I can see why it wasn’t renewed – I was left wondering where the story line could possibly go. Sometimes there is no reason to keep it going.

Dead to Me was picked up for a 3rd season, so I’m a bit confused. Maybe they mean that the 3rd season will be the last?

      • Aimee says:

Yes, the 3rd season will be its last.

      • K says:

I won’t be watching a season 3. It had its moments, and I was initially drawn to the show for having two complicated female leads, but got really tired in S2 of the endless bouncing back and forth from explosive blame to sudden forgiveness between the two characters. Then, they’re so basic they just drink a bunch of wine and get amnesia, I guess, only to do the same thing in the following episode. Kind of gross how many crimes two wealthy white people get away with, and in this climate that seems less funny.

I was sad to hear this a few days ago. Sabrina was a pleasant surprise for me.

I’ve been arguing all morning with a male friend who apparently hates this series. I struggled to get through part 3, but he’s basically mad it wasn’t written for what he wanted to view.

I’m literally having to do the work and explain why he shouldn’t be bashing female sexuality with his comments. According to him this show apparently istrying to normalize teen and elderly sexualization. And he considers the aunts thirsty cougars who throw themselves at everyone.

I am on my second coffee trying to not lose it and show him just because you’re not used to positive female sexual empowerment viewed from a female lens, doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s pulpy and he has some legit criticisms but it’s not a bad show just because you don’t like a show.

I wish I had stayed in bed.

  4. Case says:

I absolutely LOVE Sabrina but I’m also behind on the latest episodes. I think Sabrina is a great character and they have such a talented cast. The show was smarter and darker than I ever expected. I’ll have to catch up on the newest episodes so I can catch the final ones when they air.

Side note: I have three or four shows I need to catch up on and with all this time I’ve had during quarantine, I haven’t thought once to pick them back up and have instead watched different shows/movies. I procrastinate with TV watching. Is that weird? Lol.

    • Jaxonmeh says:

I procrastinate as well on shows. But honestly I did not enjoy Part 3 as much as Part 1 & 2. I do hope the setup is worth the payoff.

      • pottymouth pup says:

I agree, part 3 wasn’t as good as the first 2 but I hope they can do a nice job wrapping it up with part 4

  5. Seán says:

Just a correction, all four parts of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina have always been on Netflix and were never on The CW. The show was originally developed for the CW but eventually a deal was agreed that it would be distributed by Netflix before the season even premiered.

    • Ginna says:

I was confused about that too. I think Hecate meant that Riverdale was picked up from the CW, but it was awkwardly worded.

  6. CROOKSNNANNIES says:

This is just a shallow take but as a viewer I don’t think it’s populated by that many “beautiful people,” which I found refreshing. Prudence is STUNNING and Nick is very handsome but I would say the rest are pretty/cute. Which I like because they seemed more like innocent (at the beginning) high schoolers than the perfectly polished model lookalikes in most CW shows. It made me think of my high school more.

    • Jenn says:

Hm!! I think the kids at the Academy of the Dark Arts are supposed to look a lot more glamorous than Sabrina’s “ordinary” school friends — setting up a dichotomy and a conflict that never really got fully explored — but I agree that it is effective!

  7. f says:

the show never aired on the CW, get your facts right

    • Kate says:

Read the article snippy… it was originally being DEVELOPED for the CW but was picked up by Netflix. DEVELOPED for…..not aired on.

  8. Chlo says:

I loved part 1 of Sabrina, I liked part 2, I could not stand part 3. I did not get past episode 3. That show took a serious nosedive, in my opinion. Sabrina gave me serious hair color envy once her hair color changed at the end of season 1.

    • 10KTurtle says:

I had the same Sabrina-watching evolution as you did. The Sabrina character got worse and worse. The adult witches on the show (the aunties/Lilith) were the best characters to me. Oh, and all the retro clothing and Prudence’s utterly immaculate looks!

  9. Amelie says:

This show never aired on the CW actually, it has only been on Netflix.

I surprised myself by watching and enjoying this show quite a lot, as I haven’t watched many teen shows since college. I don’t take these teen shows too seriously so I guess I can look past whatever most people didn’t line in season 3. I find the campy, witchy, dark aspect a lot of fun (I really enjoy the actor who plays Lilith, she’s probably my favorite character!) and there is a whole storyline about a teen coming out as transgender (in real life I think the actor identified as nonbinary) that was pretty groundbreaking. I think some of the storylines are silly, like the identity of Sabrina’s father without being too spoilery, but for the most part I don’t take the show too seriously so I can enjoy it for what it is: a teenage soap opera with supernatural elements thrown in.

I’m disappointed there is only one season left because I was hoping to see some kind of crossover with Riverdale, a show I have yet to watch. Also I’m very interested to see how they wrap up Ozark. That show is phenomenal and I am halfway through season 3 (no spoilers!!).

  10. Vanessa says:

I really love season three I’m really upset that Netflix cancelled it The fanbase were really negative and downright racist towards spoilers a headed Roz and Harvey getting together . Jaz Sinclair and Ross Lynch who play Roz and Harvey are dating In real life and the abuse Jaz gets its ridiculously and hateful.

    • Amelie says:

Omg they are? I just went and google imaged them! They are so cute together! I hate that Jaz is receiving hate for dating Ross but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I hope she ignores the haters, she deserves to be happy.

  11. LaUnicaAngelina says:

I enjoy the show. I like it when series keep their seasons and run short. It keeps the story fresh and entertaining. I watch Riverdale but the seasons are way too long with too many things happening. I felt the same about The Vampire Diaries. Stop with all the bullshit and tell a great story. Sabrina moves at a great pace which makes it easy to watch.

    • Case says:

Same here. I can’t commit to shows that have 8 seasons that are 22 episodes long. No show needs that much content, lol. Short and sweet is much more my speed; 8-12 episodes is great, and shows don’t need to last forever. I enjoy them much more, in fact, when I know I’m working toward a conclusion.

  12. huncamunca says:

I’m also bummed about this. And I was sad to see they cancelled Katy Keene because that was my number one escape/guilty pleasure this winter. It couldn’t have been more different from Riverdale: it was very sweet with lots of pretty clothes and light-hearted storylines, including a spin on the Anna Delvey scam. It was just a perfect cozy show.

To fill the void, I’ve been watching Bunheads and I’ll probably start Younger because I like Sutton Foster. Anyone else have similar recommendations on Hulu/Netflix/Prime?

    • Case says:

I really loved High Fidelity with Zoe Kravitz on Hulu. A fairly light, fun show that moves well and has interesting characters.

  13. Vega says:

I liked Sabrina for the 1st 2 seasons. Season 3 was terrible and I stopped midway through. Your subconscious was on to something.

  14. JillyBean says:

And all articles say Ozark is coming back for season 4… I’m confused too!

  15. Valiantly Varnished says:

Part Three was bonkers but entertaining. I was sad to hear it was cancelled but I also get it. I feel like the way this show is written it isnt meant to go for tons of seasons.

  16. Sof says:

I watched all seasons and have to say the last one made me feel old for the show, they added a band and… yes, not my thing. It was obvious to me that the couples were formed to make fans ship the characters together, which again, it’s a teenage show, but I wished they weren’t so evident.
Perhaps their numbers dropped because adults are the ones watching it?

  17. Faye G says:

This is so disappointing, Sabrina and other “dark“ shows are what have kept me going during quarantine. ”Light” or happy shows don’t make me feel better during bad times, maybe that’s just me.
Also, I don’t think the show is that dark! It shows friends and family working together to save the town and each other. Riverdale to me is darker, yet they’re allowed to continue with 20-something bloated episodes per season? Aargh!

  18. ce says:

Sabrina had great inclusivity from the very beginning, and I adore their set design and costuming. The writing has always been weak though and the last season I couldn’t even finish. Not surprised

  19. Noely says:

I love the series, but I thought Season 3 was a hot convoluted mess tbh.

I hope this last season is more like the first two and I HOPE Prudence gets an amazing storyline I felt so sorry for her at the end of Season 3.

  20. POTATO says:

I really liked the show in the beginning, the latest season not so much. Unfortunately I found Kiernan Shipka’s acting to be the weakest and least enjoyable to watch from the beginning, although it got worse. The supporting characters and aunts were great though, really enjoyed Prudence.

    • K says:

Thank you, I hesitate to say it because I often see people giving her credit, and she was thrown right into the deep end of the industry as a kid, but I think she’s such a wooden actor. Her line delivery is so unnatural, like she’s half-asleep and mildly irritated. Maybe she picked that up from January Jones?

  21. lili says:

I’m very sad. The show will have very few episodes and so much happened in the finale they can’t possibly wrap it up properly. I’d give one more season to develop characters!

  22. February-Pisces says:

Really liked Sabrina, But tv shows don’t need to run forever. I don’t see much point in it continuing after season 4. Just leave it as it is. I was thinking the other day how great films in the 80s didn’t get sequels like they do nowadays. They were just left to be great on their own. Now if a film or TV show is a hit there’s always a pointless sequel to it, or they churn of 10 seasons of it, it just kills its quality.
