Gigi Hadid’s very colorful apartment includes dyed pasta cabinets

Gigi Hadid was on my Twitter feed the other night. She does that periodically, so I don’t pay it too much mind. Then I read it was because she was showing off her apartment. I like some good House Pr0n as much as the next person, but I could not be bothered to get that excited about checking out Gigi’s space.

Oh, what a foolish girl I was.

Gigi posted a series of interior shots of her New York apartment to Instagram last Saturday. According to her caption, she’d spent the past year “designing and curating” it. She also thanked her mother and all her “favorite creatives” who helped bring it together:

Spent all of last year designing and curating my passion project / dream spot. Of course it all came together right before quarantining out of the city…. but I’m excited for the time I’ll get to spend enjoying all the special corners that were made with a lil help from some of my favorite creatives (tap!) who embraced my ideas and didn’t call me crazy. 💛 ++ my mamma:) who is the greatest homemaking-sounding-board I could ask for (she called me crazy when required) ☺️ grateful to and for all.
Special thanks to Gordon Kahn!

The décor has just the right amount of chaos I look for from the young-and-beautiful set. My own style is clean lines with a single accent color so when I look at others abodes, I love to see things I wouldn’t do. You can see all her shots here, but let’s examine a few:

Her Living Space:

It looks like an open space plan, which, again, is not my thing (I prefer walls and designated rooms – must be my conservative upbringing). I love that couch – it looks like a sectional sofa made up individual oversized chairs. This is a brilliant seating option for an entertaining space, people could group them together or spread them apart to make individual seating areas. I enjoy the patterns and colors that oddly work together. Plus, my Barbie obsession approves of the top magazine cover. I’d like to know more about the orange box. My first thought was it was an elaborate ashtray. I use my folks’ old ashtrays from the 50s-70s as tabletop décor so I was down with it. But I think it’s a tinted wood note writing box, with a box for notecards and a spot for the inkwell and fountain pens. It’s very pretty but I would probably use it for its intended purpose at my desk. I know why Gigi doesn’t, though -it’s because her pens won’t fit:

I love the SAFE HERE artwork, I’d place that right by my front door. The room seen through the doorway is a guest bathroom:

It’s weird and funky but by gawd, I love the New Yorker covers on the wall. You would always have something to look at while in there. You know Hildi Santo-Tomas from Trading Spaces just gasped wherever she is.

Gigi’s kitchen is getting a lot of attention. And deservedly so:

There’s almost too much to discuss here. Other than the lights, this is not my design aesthetic, but it does look pretty functional, save for possibly too cluttered counter tops. I don’t bake much but I do roll my own pasta, so I need a counter dedicated to that. Gigi doesn’t though, because she has these fancy pasta cabinets:

Don’t hate me but I love the colored pasta. It might be one of my favorite things about the entire apartment. Those look like display partitions so that pasta will never get used but what a great way to add color to the kitchen (although I like simpler color schemes in other rooms, I prefer a loud, colorful kitchen). They’re side opening cabinets so I doubt they actually hold loose pasta, which is a let down. It’s a creative way to hide any clutter behind they doors, though, although those latches would infuriate if I trying to put a meal together quickly.

I gotta say, this apartment captured my attention long enough to forget Gigi was pregnant. That’s going to be a bitch to baby-proof (lose the pool balls or those dish shelves are about to become target practice). Dlisted discovered this was only one of two apartments Gigi owns in the same building so maybe this will be her escape space or entertaining pad and the 3-bedroom townhouse is where she’ll live with the baby. Being rich sounds nice.

I get a headache from all of this but I love that it seems she went with what SHE likes instead of just hiring a ”celebrity interior designer”.

Yes it’s a nightmare but it’s also kinda fun.

I agree completely! I do wonder if the uh, busyness is an age thing? Any readers in their early 20s looking at this and loving it?

      • theothercleo says:

It actually reminds me of some of my mom’s friends interiors and they’re all in their late fifties-early sixties. I have a couple of friends younger than me (I’m 28) and their apartments do not look like this at all, they’d probably hate most of Gigi’s place. Anyway, if she likes it it’s the only thing that matters, she’s the one living there.

      • Slowdown says:

I find it quite old school borderline bad taste.

      • 10KTurtle says:

I’m almost 40 and I love it! I recently house-sat at a beautifully decorated house where everything was stylishly coordinated, neutral tones with a few pops of color, but everything felt so sterile to me as if I was living in a demo house. I had a palpable sense of relief when I finally got back home to my mismatched house with different colors everywhere. I wonder if the pasta in the cabinets is dyed, or if those are just tinted glass panels? And when can we stop this no-back couch trend? If you can’t lean back on it, it’s a BENCH. How are people comfortable on movie night on these living room benches?

      • minx says:

Love it. Go for it Gigi.

      • julia says:

I love it and I’m almost 40. It’s boho hippy and I’d feel very cozy and relaxed in this place.

    • Silver Charm says:

I’m glad she has found her own style outside of her mother’s. I mean, it’s hideous but it’s hideously her own.

    • Eliza says:

It’s like a 90s eclectic house styled by a 9 year old… you know dark wood mixed with bright orange and cool blue patterns, but also a bit childish (large pen, pool balls, magazine collage). But hey, i couldn’t live there, but if that’s her bliss then enjoy.

I liked the bathroom but those large marble tiles on the floor are a slippery nightmare and behind the glass with the tub and a woodstump right there. Just odd. I’m sure it’s coated but i just think of all the things that will grow in/on it.

    • Sarah says:

Given how many celebrity homes look like hotels rather than actual homes I love this for her. Oh to be young and rich! Go Gigi.

  2. Eenie Googles says:

I hate that coloured pasta decor so much.
    It’s so LiveLaughLove.

  3. Caitlin Bruce says:

It’s not my personal style but I much prefer this than Jennifer Anistons cold home vibes

    • LadyMTL says:

Same here. Most of this is not my style at all (I do like the kitchen counter / backsplash as well as that HUGE walk in shower and tub area) but I can appreciate that this shows her personality. I might get a headache from that bathroom but at least it’s not a generic blank box of a space.

  4. Lavande says:

It’s so warm, fun, and inviting. The sofa is interesting it reminds me of Moroccan furniture a bit. I love to have for myself the yellow wall art and the orange boxes on the coffee table.
I guess the most « creative » part is the coloured pasta filled cabinet doors. That’s probably not been done before, right?

    • KK2 says:

I agree. I love it. It looks comfortable and fun an functional. Also it’s suited to her tastes and I personally love that the kitchen has “cluttered” counters– i.e. its a real kitchen that people cook in. When people show kitchen photos and there is literally nothing on the counters it drives me nuts. You don’t have a coffeemaker? An electric kettle or mixer or any appliance you use daily and leave on the counter? A good kitchen to me has to look like it is actually used, not like it is a model kitchen straight off the showroom floor.

  5. Liz version 700 says:

Minus the pasta I love this. My house is a lot of white walls and this is so cool 😉

    • BeanieBean says:

She’s got a LOT of pasta on those shelves, and not just the colored stuff. I’m someone who doesn’t see the point in food as decoration.

  6. A says:

I HATE it. Dear god, not my taste at all.

    • FHMom says:

Me, too. It’s a cluttered mess.

    • detritus says:

I guess this is what happens when young adults have gorgeous expensive palatial homes, but decorate like a dorm.

      It’s nouveau riche dorm decor.

    • Jaded says:

Me three. I detest clutter and all the clashing colours and patterns. I’d get claustrophobic if I had to spend more than 10 minutes there.

  7. Lucy2 says:

I like that it’s not a typical celebrity professionally designed home, and I like an eclectic mix, but I think this is a bit much for me.
It wasn’t the New Yorker, but I used to decorate my room with magazine covers and stuff like that too, when I was like 14 or so.

  8. McMom says:

This apartment would make me anxious – I need more harmony in my space and a place for my eyes to settle, but I love when anyone truly makes their space their own. Kudos to her for finding and embracing her own aesthetic.

  9. wildwaffles says:

I like what she’s done, it is very personal and a reflection of who lives in the space. While it may not all be my taste, I am more irritated by homes where it is super obvious everything in it was selected by a designer or out of a catalog. Those spaces don’t feel authentic. And while I tried to like the all white/soft gray pallets that are super popular right now, instead it makes me feel uneasy, like I am in an asylum or a commercial building. I much prefer decorating with color. I like when homes have decor items that were collected by the individual or have personal meaning. Like that orange box, you look at it and want to know the story or looking at it reminds you of some wonderful trip or a special person, etc.

I love the New Yorker wallpaper. Initially I thought it was book jackets, which would also be a cool design thing. Regarding the kitchen counters, I think it’s probably a dream of most to have clear counters but the reality is you waste too much time every day getting things you need in and out of cabinets so it just stays on the counter until guests come over LOL. Those latches on the pasta cabinets would be a complete pain. And I hate windowed cabinets in the kitchen, I view that as lost storage space, as it has to look perfect inside rather than be functional. And I would LOVE to sit in that bathtub and gaze out the window, maybe with a glass of wine and a good book. Perfect way to spend some time!

  10. Jenn says:

While I’m not a fan of the colours in the living room, it looks like a warm inviting place where I could flop down on the couch and have a really good girls night.
    The bathroom, I love!

  11. Züri says:

Not my taste, but I agree that it’s better than a lot of the “curated” and “elevated” (two words that are so overused) interiors clearly done by a designer.

A friend of mine has that colorful Roche Bobois sofa and it is the most uncomfortable thing ever. It’s actually pretty in person, but the separate pieces are constantly coming apart, requiring you to get up and put them back together. The problem gets even worse if you use it as a guest bed. Eek.

  12. Case says:

It doesn’t fit my personal style at all, but I like that it’s colorful and fun and clearly what she wanted rather than what is considered cool or stylish.

  13. Kb says:

I hate it all! Except maybe the bathroom photo (not the one with the New Yorker magazine covers).

  14. Slowdown says:

I am offended by the pasta cabinets.
    Love the couches.
As others said I do approve of a house decorated by personal taste. It’s so rare in celebrities.
The horrifyingly coldest houses so far have been Kim K’s and Kerry Washington’s NY flat. It literally depressed me so much that I had to watch Mark Ronson’s California home on YouTube to heal.

  15. Mich says:

    I want that couch.

  16. souperkay says:

I thought the orange box is her weed box, box for weed, ashtray, spot for a grinder above ashtray, spot to roll a joint.

  17. Lisa says:

Not my taste at all but it certainly shows off her personality and that is what matters. If she likes it whatever.

  18. North of Boston says:

I’m surprised how much I liked it!

And the headline was a fun brain teaser before I’ve had my morning coffee, turning over the adjectives in my mind.

What exactly were dyed pasta cabinets?
Are they dedicated cabinets for storing only pasta?
Are the cabinets made of pasta? How would that work? … wouldn’t the rats of New York or insects do a number on them?
    Is the pasta dyed?
Are the cabinets dyed? How do you even dye cabinets?

And after all that, I still didn’t guess what they actually wound up being 🙂

    • Vera says:

hahaha same here, I first thought they were either cabinets made out of dyed pasta, os she likes dyed pasta sooo much, she has entire cabinets to store them

  19. Joanna says:

    I love it.

  20. I'm With The Band says:

It’s great. If you like youth hostels.

  21. Nev says:

I only like the bathroom idea.

  22. Atti says:

I only like the couch and the carpet on the stairs. No, I LOVE them. The rest I dont like. But its a young woman living there, this looks like the apartment of someone young and bubbly. There is a lot of hate about this online, I dont get it.

  23. MellyMel says:

Very eclectic and not like the standard all white look that everyone seems to have right now. It’s not really my style, but I love the bathroom, that couch and the kitchen (minus the pasta and the pool balls).

  24. Adrien says:

I’m beginning to think that Tan France is not an arbiter of good taste or maybe he is not a good friend to Gigi. C’mon, that is a design straight out of a ten year old’s idea of a cool house. Pasta shells everywhere. OK maybe she likes them a lot. Tbh, Idc. If that makes her happy. At least it’s not flashy or overly ostentatious like the huge Eagle sculpture that will greet you insider’s Papa John’s mansion.

  25. HotSoda says:

Hate me, but I adore the sofa!

The bathroom would probably start a migraine for me.

  26. roo says:

I think it’s fun! A hot mess at times, but cute!

  27. Claudia says:

I don’t like the marble in the bathroom and the kitchen, feels too busy, a plain colour would’ve worked better, but I love the rest. So colourful and full of personality. I much prefer this to the sterile clean/white living trend that’s so popular right now. (No, I’m not in my twenties, I could almost be her mom.)

  28. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

From someone who covered her intimate space with the Fauves, in splendid totality I might add, I love it. When you’re surrounded by things you absolutely love, it’s like a hug from your softest blanket each time you enter. I see many decades represented in those shots, so trying to pigeonhole her eclectic style for some weird validation is amusing, I’ll give ya that lol. We all like what we like. Nothing we’re doing now is it’s own except maybe telling our homes and appliances what to do verbally or digitally.

I have masks purchased during family travels when I was a kid that will never be boxed and stored somewhere. My personal approach to decorating has a direct line with our annual Christmas tree. Mom started her ornament collection when she was 19. Anywhere and everywhere she went, she bought an ornament keepsake. When I was born, she started mine. And when I lost her, I continued this tradition because it would’ve been a crime to stop lol. And every year, we go get some ridiculously priced tree to serve as the backdrop for our ‘life.’ There are funny ones, scary ones and silly ones. Some are awful reminders of pain, and others are celebrations of achievements. And some I can’t talk about because they make my cry lol. But when they’re all on in the tree, it’s quite orchestral. And that’s how I decorate lol!

  29. Mina_Esq says:

I like everything about this except the pasta island (it already has a yellow countertop, and the pasta display reads a bit too “restaurant” or “Italian shop” to me) and the New Yorker wallpaper (I would have liked it if it were just one accent wall). She didn’t mess too much with the construction, so this will easily resell if she removes the colourful decor or if she decides to be more streamlined as an older adult.

  30. Michael L Kelly says:

I like that she made her home feel inviting. Not like a museum. Interestingly her sister Bella went with far more classic styling in her apartment but I guess Gigi is a hippy at heart. So many colors. I bet the baby will not be able to stop staring at everything

  31. kelleybelle says:

I love it, bursts of colour everywhere. Such a happy place!

  32. MsIam says:

I think it’s cute! If I were a rich single girl in my twenties, I might do the same thing, lol.

  33. Jules says:

Holy shit, it looks like she dropped a ton of acid and decorated her place. Sensory overload.

  34. shanaynay says:

It’s like an antique junk yard within an ultra modern setting….

  35. Allergy says:

I actually hate it. I hate everything about it.

  36. Kerfuffles says:

I was in New York last year and saw that multi-fabric couch “in person” (“in couch”?) at a very fancy furniture & design store. I LOVED it.

  37. Marigold says:

I like it. It looks young and fun. And comfy! The only thing I don’t like is the yellow island. I just do t like that color much. And YES. Being rich would be sooooooo nice.

  38. Bibliomommy96 says:

I absolutely love this!!! The colors, the controlled chaos! It’s so amazing

  39. Erin says:

Not really my style but it was fun to look at. I really enjoyed this post 🙂

  40. Keshet says:

Jesus, the sectional is cool but everything else is HIDEOUS. colored pasta? Are we in kindergarten?

  41. LidiaJara says:

Love it sooooooo much! Even the ugly corny pasta. I will take kitsch over modern any day lol. I’m not saying I can’t appreciate why people like modern, but I do find all the flat, impersonal celebrity interior designer stuff so awful. And I also find the bigger-is-better throw money at the wall and pretend it’s style Drake aesthetic awful.

But I’m probably a bad judge, my Irish Catholic contractor father is always like physically ill that every room in my Salvadoran styled house is a different (vibrant) color.

  42. I love it! Un-self-conscious, happy, expressive, a collector’s home. 🙂

  43. Celeste says:

I wouldn’t decorate my home like this, but I love color, so this to me is a billion times better than the instagram grey/ beige and a touch of gold aesthetic that everyone is doing.
Also, I live in New York with no outdoor space and I am jealous of the greenery you can see in the first pic.

  44. Veronica S. says:

Honestly…I don’t hate it. I’m more minimalist and less bold in my house aesthetic, but this actually has color and warmth and a touch of maximalism to it that’s a bit of a lost art these days as everybody pushes for simpler looks. The bathroom is really the only thing that kind of sticks out as not quite fitting the rest of the house to me. It’s a little too sharply geometric and marbled to work with the more bohemian aesthetic elsewhere, but that’s forgivable. At least you see some personality in this.

  45. Meg says:

The makeup chair! I cant decide if i love it as is or would prefer in a different color ad that would get strains and dirty fast? She has what looks like a setup in most makeup chairs on a set

  46. Em says:

Reminds me of a house decorated for one of the original Real World seasons.

  47. pupa says:

That is a whole lot of expensive ugly. But at least she loves it, which is what matters I guess.

  48. coffeeisgood says:

I don’t really care for it – its for too eclectic and I don’t like so many random patterns and art pieces but I love that it has so much personality and character. It isn’t boring and doesn’t resemble the basic aesthetic so many other celebrity homes pay designers for.
