Lily James: ‘If I want to order fast food, I let myself eat what I want to eat’

Brad Pitt poses with the Oscar for Actor In A Supporting Role in the film Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood during the the 92nd Academy Awards, 2020 on Monday 10 February 2020

Whatever happened to Lily James and Chris Evans? They got “caught” on some kind of late-night date in July, in London, and then they set up a pap stroll date just a few days later. And then nothing. Was it just a hookup situation and Chris was like “no this is legit, I swear”? Or is it legit and they just haven’t publicized it recently? I don’t know. But Shape Magazine doesn’t make any mention of Lily banging Captain America, and she isn’t making any sly references to him either. Mostly, she just talks about spending time by herself in lockdown and how much she enjoyed that. Some highlights:

She’s starring in the Netflix remake of Rebecca with Armie Hammer: To fully dive into the emotional intensity of their roles, she and Hammer studied the poem “Mad Girl’s Love Song,” by Sylvia Plath, which details a heartbroken woman on the brink of madness. “We read that poem so many times, and we found this twisted love story that came out of it. That helped us navigate our relationship in the film. Playing our roles became organic and took a life of its own.”

Fitness is her anchor: “Without the normal structure of working life, I have to create my own schedule to keep myself motivated. I have found that starting my day with exercise is the key. When I work out regularly, I immediately feel the benefits. It’s exciting to be empowered by that, and it turns into a domino effect. Naturally, I start eating better and stop drinking so much wine. Then I feel more energized in the morning to work out again.”

Cooking for herself & doing takeout too: “Toward the beginning of lockdown, I was cooking all the time. I learned new recipes using fresh vegetables from my garden, such as veggie sweet potato chili, stews, and ratatouille. Over time, I started having days when I managed only enough energy to order takeout, like pizza three times a week. I had to remind myself that it’s OK to indulge sometimes. I don’t try to deprive myself of stuff. If I want to order fast food, I let myself eat what I want to eat. Now I’m striving for a constant balance between the two.”

Spending time by herself: “Usually, I’m so distracted by life. This is the first time in a long while that I’ve been able to just sit with myself. My favorite thing lately is to lie in a bath for hours and check out under the sound of running water. To unwind, I light candles and add fragrant oils and soaps. It’s so relaxing. I’ve also been reading a lot of poetry; tending my garden; and going on walks — getting back to the basics. I’m lucky to even be able to do that. This time has been so hard for so many.”

Fake it until you make it, not so much: “My instinct is often to pretend, to put on an act of giving off a positive message about confidence. But the truth is that I don’t always feel confident. I’m beginning to realize that ‘Fake it till you make it’ isn’t useful to me at this point in my life. Embracing and owning up to my vulnerability is more powerful. I feel more seen, and not like I’m pretending all the time. That is something I want to focus on maintaining moving forward.”

People who are able to focus on cooking consistently in the year of our lord Beyonce 2020 are so much better than me. I cannot. I’ve been mostly getting takeout. And it’s fine, like Lily says. Sometimes you can concentrate on those kinds of tasks and sometimes you can’t and we need to be able to give ourselves a break. As for all of those people who are rediscovering that time spent alone, being quiet, with their own thoughts… like, is that a new thing? It feels like so few people were actually living the introvert-life before the pandemic. It’s nice to be quiet. It’s nice to be alone with your own thoughts and not having this constant barrage of stimulation. I know that makes me sound like an old fart, but there you go.

Here’s the trailer for Rebecca. The costumes look GORGEOUS. I love that era in fashion. The set design looks spectacular too.

Evans recently said he is single on Bill Maher, and said he was in to London for work. It seems done.
(It looks like Harpar’s Bazaar tried to get some clicks though with saying that she didn’t want to comment on the old rumor)

  2. Darla says:

If she hit it and quit it all I can say is; respect.

I like her. I will watch this.

  3. Yep says:

They had a fling? Always liked her. She’s a solid actress. And her point about vulnerability gels. You’re only truly strong if you’re comfortable showing you’re human and vulnerable like everyone else.

Armie is the weirdest combination of cheesy and attractive, leaning towards the cheesy. Reminds me of Cary Elwes. He was semi-hot when playing the prof assistant in CMBYN. Think Maxim is meant to be quite a bit older than her. And looks like they “warmed” it up passion wise because he was quite cold and stern in the book.

  4. Snowslow says:

Ooohhh I’ll be all over this.
Think I’ll be disappointed though because this kind of sleek film needs a bit of edge and hmmm, not feeling it from the trailer. Also James is not my favourite actor. Love Hammer though. I know people here dislike him but I think he’s a super intense and engaging actor.

  5. Harper says:

I hope Netflix didn’t turn Rebecca into a basic love story when it’s really a psychological thriller. I’m worried now that LIly says she and Armie read that poem for inspiration … just read the book instead, everything they need to know is in there.

    • Andrew’s Nemesis says:

Agreed. Daphne du Maurier was an amazing writer: she received, and receives, far fewer accolades and exposure than she deserved. (Have you read ‘The Parasites’? It’s a masterpiece.) I love Netflix, but I’m not enthralled by a number of their remakes, and think they should have given this one a hard pass. It’s far too densely psychological for someone of Lily James’ limited range. Despite the overdramatic score, the original was the best.

Edit – just watched the trailer and … for the love of God, what were they thinking? There’s no hint in the book that there was a grand sexual passion between the new Mrs de Winter and Max; it was the fact that she was such a shy little mouse, the antithesis of Rebecca that he sought, and that she was gently passive and terrified. The costuming looks great, though.

      • Lady Baden-Baden says:

You have no idea how excited I am to find someone else mention The Parasites!! No-one else I know has even heard of it – which is such a shame as it’s an AMAZING book! That was my first Du Maurier and I loved it so much I immediately went and got a load of her other novels… which of course could only be disappointing after Parasites. That really was her masterpiece.

      • TrixC says:

I also think she’s far too beautiful to play that character, in the book she’s supposed to be quite plain and awkward, a complete physical contrast to Rebecca.

  6. Nancy says:

I thought there were run rumors that she was back together with Matt Smith! I can’t keep up.

  7. Thirtynine says:

Yeah, I think Armie is a decent actor and really liked him in the Man from UNCLE. He was funny. But I won’t watch this, I don’t think. Rebecca is meant to be suspenseful, menacing and dark, with both hero and heroine tortured by their own thoughts of Rebecca. The clip showed lots of screaming and tantrums, and Mrs Danvers, who would be an amazing character to play, was rude and blunt, instead of slowly and insidiously gaining psychological ascendancy over the girl. Pity, it could be fabulous if they stuck with the book. There’s a reason it’s a classic.

    • Green Desert says:

      Spot on.

Mrs. Danvers in the book! And in the original film…one of the most compelling performances ever on screen.

  8. Naddie says:

I’m so with her on that; if you will eat something you can’t everyday, you gotta eat it without moderation. Once a well intentioned nutritionist said we “don’t have to stop eating pizza, just eat one slice instead of eight”, and I’m like, really??? No sir.

  9. EMc says:

Who can stay in the bathtub for hours? I wish I could do this. After about 20 mins the water isn’t hot, so you’ve gotta add more and swish it around. And you can’t lie in the cold water, that sounds awful. This detail stuck out and confused me, obviously 🙃

    • Snazzy says:

I totally can! Sometimes I have to “re-heat” the water, I’m in there for so long. It’s my happy place 🙂

      • Grey says:

Me too! I could be in there for 3 hours. Take in a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and a good book… its glorious.

  10. Case says:

She always seems lovely and I’ll definitely watch Rebecca (although Armie Hammer is right beside Henry Cavill as one of my least favorite actors with a face I can’t stand, lol).

I agree with her on fitness. I also find my healthy habits have a domino effect – if I go to bed earlier and get up earlier, I’m more likely to exercise in the morning, which sets me up for a happier day where I’m more energized, drink more water, and eat better. They all go together.

  11. Sarah says:

It’s easy to stay thin when you are not forced to stay in a grey office 40h a week

  12. Frenchie says:

Gosh I wish someone knew what’s up between Lily James and Chris Evans ! They get caught in a late night hookup, then set up a Afflarmas type of pap stroll, then Evans said a few weeks later he is single, then a rumour came out late august he was back in England because some people on the internet mentioned the background of a location he was doing interviews really looked like a hotel room in Bath where Lily is currently working on a movie, then the d* pick incident happened and now, she won’t comment on anything and they both act like nothing happened ? Really guys !?! It is obvious he is in the USA right now and she is in the UK and it seems to have been the case for most of the recent weeks when scrolling through their respective social media activities, so ??? Any way you want to see this is valid at this point in time because we have no clue! The hookup situation is the most likely, but do they still have a thing going on? Gossip gods give us an answer!

  13. Heather H says:

Excited about Rebecca, even if they go astray from the book I’ll be happy to have a modern interpretation just for the atmospheric eye candy! Anyone else think Armie isn’t old enough and Lily not you enough to play the de Winter’s?

I’ve always had a soft spot for Lily and wish her well, I had hoped she and Matt would work out as I have a soft spot for him as well from Dr. Who.

  14. Veronica S. says:

God, it must be so nice. 😂 GI disease destroyed my ability to eat a lot of the foods I used to love, even some of the healthier stuff I enjoyed like cruciferous vegetables. Pizza three times a week would straight up murder my digestive system.

She is a very beautiful woman, but man do I hate that cover. The body suit is just hideous to me, which is a shame because I like the plaid print underneath. And it just seems…oddly dull? Like if you’re going to do an autumnal cover, why not go with a richer shade like a burgundy?

  15. Yati says:

I think it was just a hook up gone wrong (caught in the middle of the night, him traveling overseas during a pandemic when people were still being asked to stay home and photographed without masks like amateurs) then juiced from both sides eating ice cream at the park. I will say they brought their celebrity stupidity to the surface, for a second I thought they were gonna challenge Ana and Ben for pandemic thirsty couple of the year.
Also, homegirl needs to trim her struggle ends for these covers.

  16. The Recluse says:

What is that fugly thing they put her in for that cover?
    Just…ughhhhh.

  17. usedtobe says:

Exactly the one and only thing I was coming to say. WtF is she wearing?

  18. Granger says:

He’s not old enough to be Maxim, she’s neither young nor plain enough to be the second Mrs de Winter. And as someone said above, he didn’t marry her because they had some great passion or electric chemistry–he married her because she was quiet and sweet. I want to watch this so badly but I’m afraid I’ll just end up yelling at my TV.

  19. Productivity at 68% says:

That ugly-bustier style is in right now. Just came across Gabrielle Union on the cover of Women’s Health wearing a similar thing. Agree it’s absolutely fug; think it was last trending in the ’90s and Cindy Crawford wore something similar.

And she’s right: some people do the moderation thing and it works for them; others (myself included) prefer the feast thing. I fast most days of the week and then have feast / cheat days several days a week. Works for me and I don’t feel like I’m depriving myself.
