The Duke & Duchess of Sussex donated to CAMFED for Harry’s birthday

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visit to Johannesburg

Karma can be good or bad – if you put out negativity and hate into the world, it will come back to you. If something great happens in your life, you can pay that good karma forward. Like, for instance, if you just signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix and you and your wife and son are healthy and happy in Montecito, California, you can choose to pay it forward. That’s what Prince Harry did for his 36th birthday. Sussex fans had raised money for CAMFED for both Meghan and Harry’s birthdays this year. The Sussex Squad ended up raising $129,000. The Sussexes decided to match the donation.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle found a special way to mark the Duke of Sussex’s 36th birthday on Tuesday. The couple chose to make a personal donation to CAMFED, a non-profit organization that works to eradicate African poverty through girls’ education and empowerment, according to a spokesperson for the Sussexes. There has been an ongoing online campaign to raise money for the organization as a way to honor both Meghan and Harry’s birthdays this year.

As the campaign came to a close on Tuesday, the total reached $129,000. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex wanted to thank everyone who donated, and to show their own support for the organization, they donated a further $130,000. Along with their contribution, the couple shared a message, saying, “‘No better way to celebrate what really matters. Thank you to everyone who donated, Harry and Meghan.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have supported Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) in recent years through their official work. Harry visited with the organization in Zambia in 2018, and Meghan took part in a panel discussion alongside CAMFED’s executive director, Angie Murimirwa, for International Women’s Day in 2019.

[From People]

The Duke and Duchess of Good Karma, I’m telling you. And I love the other message, the subtle f–k you to all of the busybody royal reporters lamenting the fact that Harry and Meghan are so rich now, and how they “live in a mansion” and “have nice things.” H&M are using their money to literally pay it forward and financially support a cause they love.

This is wonderful! It’s amazing that 113 women will now have a chance to have an education.

    • PEARL GREY says:

I love that Harry and Meghan’s fans not only support the couple’s own initiatives but also create initiatives in honour of them to raise money and awareness for good causes, like for Archie’s birth.

That’s the power of an engaging, genuine and likeable couple who inspire others to join in with their work rather than just read about it. They make a great team and any organisation is lucky to have them.

What a loss for the BRF, but it’s what they deserve.

  2. CidyKitty(CidySmiley) says:

Of course they did because they are decent people who put their money where their mouth is. They do and don’t just say they will. Thats a good energy.

    • SpankFD says:

I know, right? I keep thinking back to House of Petty (TM) assertions that MM was only after PH’s money and position. Well, she rode shotgun as he ditched the fam and got a proper job. Now PH/MM volunteer at relief centers (instead of zooming to them) and they celebrate birthdays by giving to others. MM/PH have built independent income streams, which means they, like the royal family, have the option to be fully self-serving (or not). They too can siphon off the wealth of a nation or choose to invest in the world at large.

Let’s hope they focus on making the world a better place.

  3. VS says:

Thx for this article………a group of Sussex supporters (#SussexSquad) raised the money; I donated for both of their birthday (I only intended to donate for Meghan but decided to donate for her husband as well LOL); I am so glad H&M matched it! that’s just so amazing!

This is what having an impact is all about in my opinion! give me the name of any royal whose supporters can raise more than $130k; they would rather focus on stuffs like clothes, nail polishers, eating avocado, crossing legs, being racists, sexists, etc………anyway hate is their only currency.

    I also love the signature:Harry & Meghan!

  4. erni says:

I love that they sign it with Harry and Meghan.

    • Edna says:

+1000. Nice way to send a subtle message that titles are unimportant because globally they are known as Harry and Meghan

      • L84Tea says:

Exactly. Now that they’ve paid back Frogmore and are financially independent, the title debate is literally all the BM has left to squawk about. By them making themselves known as Harry & Meghan, regardless of the title, they are taking all the power away from their argument. It’s so simple, but very, very smart.

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

Yeah, that’s a really great way to send the message that they don’t need to use the titles to make a difference. They are not exploiting anything, they are using the privileged platform they have to do some good.

      • windyriver says:

Notice too in the promo for the Time 100 special to be broadcast on ABC, they’re also referred to as Harry and Meghan. That’s about as high profile a message as they can send about how they view those titles. Must be so frustrating for the poor BM; every time they think they’ve got them pinned down over some supposedly critical issue that’s about to rock the monarchy, they slip away. Not to mention that it looks like they might be on Time’s list – of the 100 Most Influential people. You really have to laugh at this point.

    • Myra says:

I didn’t even notice until you mentioned it. I think it just goes to show that the brand is Harry and Meghan. The title is just that – a title. It has no real value outside of the UK.

  5. RoyalBlue says:

our duke and duchess of solutions. harry’s decision to GET OUT was the best choice for the sussexes, they have to freedom to spend what they want where they want and how they want.

  6. Lolo86lf says:

I just love nice posts like this one about H&M. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Harry looks so handsome in these pictures. He is just a red-haired prince.

  7. Seraphina says:

This is going to be lots of fun. We have an example of how it should be done by Harry and Meghan. I saw a quote, attributed to Denzel Washington (not sure if he said it or not) but it really struck me: Some people will never like you because your spirit irritates their demons”. I think this holds true with our Good Karma Couple and everyone who has run them off.

    • Harla says:

@Seraphina, I saw that quote as well and have thought of it many times in my own life and when thinking about the Sussex’s.

      • Seraphina says:

@Harla, I saw the quote at a time in my life when I realized how mean and spiteful people can be towards others and it really resonated with me. I try to remember it because it speaks volumes – especially in this day and age when people aren;t shy about hiding their true selves.

    • A says:

That is a fantastic quote, and it’s so apt. I know it’s true because I am that person whose demons are often irked by another person’s spirit. Having been at that end is how I know that people often feel that way and then have to scrabble to justify their hatred.

    • Lila says:

That’s a lovely quote, and so true!

  8. Chartreuse says:

They are the best. And the BM will give them a bollocking for being decent people. What do the others do for their birthdays? Throw expensive parades?

  9. Harla says:

What an incredible gesture from Harry and Megs!!

I can’t think of any other royal, celebrity, politician or world leader who inspires their followers to this degree. The Sussex’s have inspired so many people from around the world to donate to so many different causes, it’s heartwarming to see!

  10. Ginger says:

This was incredible. I am so proud of them and the squad for doing this fundraiser.

  11. Becks1 says:

I was so excited when I saw this yesterday. What a fantastic gesture from H&M.

Of course, I was seeing some angry comments on twitter about how ‘royals don’t usually make their private donations public’ and its like….oh, is the Queen making a lot of private donations? Really? I find that hard to believe, to be honest. I think she thinks her “life of service” is donation enough.

    • Harla says:

@Becks1, really? Cuz the 2 or 3 times the Cambridge’s have made a donation it’s been in the news. Oh yeah I forgot, separate rules apply to the Sussex’s.

    • Ginger says:

I agree. If Will and Kate made a large donation to a charity they would definitely let the public know.

      • booboocita says:

Coming soon: Willnot and Ofwilliam announce a big donation to charity in the UK in the amount of $130,000.01! (Whether they actually MAKE a donation is anyone’s guess …)

      • Lizzie says:

Only it will come from W&K’s foundation not their own wallet.

    • Belli says:

I thought the point of the royals was for their entire lives to be owned by the public and nothing can be private.

That must just be Harry and Meghan.

  12. JT says:

It’s amazing that they inspire complete strangers to put this together. That’s what amazes me the most, the Sussex squad don’t even know each other, and yet they coordinated this huge fundraiser. This isn’t even the first time they’ve done this. Well done Sussex squad. Prince Harry was trending is the US, Canada, and France and he got birthday wishes from so many organizations. I just love how they put their money where their mouth is, especially as so many charities are struggling right now.

  13. ABritGuest says:

Such a great gesture to match funds raised by fans. It must feel nice for them to have support with such loud critics.

Fans of the Sussexes had a big fundraiser
before Archie was born donating to their charities and other kids charities, a fundraiser for his birthday donating to kids charities helping with Covid& had a tree planting initiative which ended with 115,000 trees planted. Now they’ve done this scholarship where they raised $130,000 + and with Sussexes’ marching donation, will fund 110+ young women to take vocational courses. A nice story for the charity and those that will benefit.

Not seen this charitable giving in a fandom before (I could be wrong) and I bet the Firm don’t get it at all.

The Firm do announce private donations from royal family members at times eg William for Tom Moore. They seem reluctant to open their purse when public can fund their activities so can’t see any of them being big charitable givers.

    • FashionMaven says:

Thank you for giving proper credit to #SussexSquad for this initiative – some of the press (and even comments here) imply that Camfed created and launched this initiative and #sussexsquad just happened to donate when that’s not true. #SussexSquad conceived of and created the whole thing and PICKED Camfed as the beneficiary – just like they did with so many other initiatives.

RRs in the UK are clearly trying to erase what #SussexSquad did, and while I’m happy they positively reported H&M’s donation, the erasure of #SussexSquad in this has been disheartening. Most US outlets seem to be getting it right though.

  14. Lisa says:

Well done to Harry and Meghan.

  15. S808 says:

That’s so sweet of them. So happy for the girls who’ll receive a year of education due to the generosity of Sussex Squad and Harry & Meghan!

  16. Bookie says:

I love them so much! Like a Shaun Cassidy level of fan-girling. (I’m old.)

  17. sa says:

Everything about this story is great, both that their fans (supporters? I’m not sure what the right word is in this context) were inspired by them to make charitable donations and that they matched it. It’s one of the few news stories these days without a negative element.

  18. The Duchess says:

This is such an amazing achievement. Well done to everyone who donated, raised awareness and highlighted such an amazing charity. Now 113 women will have access to such vital education opportunities. This is what a team looks like! I’m so happy Harry & Meghan donated to honour the fundraiser as well. They’re amazing people.

  19. BnLurkN4eva says:

This was just outstanding to see come together. I have rarely seen fans mobilized in such a selfless way with regards their favorites. I also love how they found a way to thank the squad without singling anyone out thereby preventing anyone being targeted by trolls, or the BM like last time.

  20. Beff says:

Quite simply, that’s how royals should act and respond.

I’d be really interested in seeing the last/next 24 hrs of fundraising for CAMFED.

  21. TheOriginalMia says:

Excellent gesture, Harry & Meghan! This is what they wanted to do with their freedom and they have.

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

It’s shocking that they managed to write an entire article about Harry and didn’t shade H/M that I could find. Perhaps it’s because it was Harry’s birthday and their real problem is with Meghan.

    • bluemoonhorse says:

These are the types of factual articles that need to be written about this couple. Both thumbs up.

    • betsyh says:

Is this intended to further burn the Cambridges?

    • EveV says:

Meghan looks amazing in the blue dress pictured in the Tatler article.
Also, it is so incredible that their followers raised $129,000 for PH’s birthday. They really do bring out the best in people.

    • FashionMaven says:

Nice article but it’s factually inaccurate. This initiative was not created nor conceived of by Camfed. It was actually thought of by #SussexSquad who then SELECTED Camfed to benefit from a scholarship #SussexSquad wanted to create.

Then the organizers from #SussexSquad contacted Camfed to see if they were open to the idea of the scholarship and that’s how this initiative progressed from there.

  22. MsIam says:

Love them! Sussex Squad posted a video tribute for Harry’s birthday on YouTube. So sweet!

    • Seraphina says:

It must really burn everyone who wanted them gone that they have a squad to cheer them on. It’s actually hilarious because I can just see Wills face and reaction and not only do the FFK and FFQC not have a squad, but Kate isn’t even accepted by the Turnips.

      • Sofia says:

Kate has her “rangers” but they’re too busy concerning themselves with what the Sussexes are doing to care about their “faves”.

  23. Suzanne Hurley says:

Happy Birthday, Harry. Love that Meghan and Harry matched the donation for CAMFED. Their kindness and compassion just flows from them. As soon as I saw this story yesterday I emailed the Daily Mail fast and said, “Why aren’t you writing about THIS.” I finally saw a story there about their donation. I’ve been doing this a lot – emailing reporters all over the world and challenging them to be ‘real, authentic journalists’ rather than choosing to write lies about Meghan and Harry for clickbait. So far, no one has written me back, even though I’m very polite in my letters. LOL. I just wish Harry and Meghan and Archie, all the best.

  24. Charfromdarock says:

This is just fantastic, both the squad and H&M.

  25. Mariane says:

When you are good, good things will happen to you. The sussexs didnt have to donate but they wanted to acknowledge and celebrate the occasion in a meaningful way. This fundraiser was so powerful. People from around the world have joined together for a great cause. I love love that neither the palace or RRs got to benifit from this news. The keenbridges thought that random bakery trip was enough to hijack harry’s bday😂they barely got much coverage(only hello, ET and people)

  26. A says:

Not only are Meghan and Harry rich off the Netflix deal, this is money they earned themselves, through their actual work. The British tabloid media is hell bent on making it seem like they didn’t actually earn it, that they got this deal because of their titles, but they don’t seem to grasp the fact that they would still have this money, and this deal, if you took away the HRH and the titles. They don’t owe the British people anything, in fact, I think they’d happily pay back every last cent from their earnings, if they had to.

The thing about life, which the British media doesn’t seem to grasp, is that you don’t have to live and die by anyone else’s approval. The British tabloid columnists, and their audience, are pissed off because they want to be the sole arbitrators of someone’s own self-esteem. They delight in this sort of thing. Their incomes depend on writing shit about broken, vulnerable people, desperate for approval, because that’s the gift that keeps on giving. They want everyone, especially public figures, to feel like their success or failure is owed to the public perception constructed by tabloids. They want people to think that they need to be liked, that they need to conform to everyone’s impossible expectations, in order to succeed.

So people like the royal family, Diana, etc., were good for their business. All of them desperately sought public adulation, both to keep the lights on in the case of the royals, and partially to fill the gnawing lack of self-worth in the case of Diana. These are not in and of themselves bad motivations, they make sense for the people in question. But the media exploits these things and holds it over the heads of people who are made to feel constantly like they’re on the hook, that they have to conform to gain tabloid approval, without which they can’t survive.

So for Harry, and Meghan, to pack their bags, to leave this idiotic train wreck of a circus, to cut off one by one any reason for the British tabloids to feel like they’re “owed” something, of course they hate that. They hate that Harry has his own income. They will keep inventing reasons as to why he doesn’t deserve it, and they will likely do that for the rest of his life. but like I’ve said before–if you’re going to take away their titles. Do it already. Take it away. Make him Harry Wales Mountbatten-Windsor or whatever. Have him work at a fucking Walmart. They think these trappings actually matter to anyone else except themselves. The rest of us get on just fine, as non-royals, without titles. It’s not the external things, it’s who you are inside, but the tabloids will always paint a picture like it’s otherwise, because they profit off of the worst impulses in society. Good on Harry and Meghan for leaving all that behind them.

  27. Jenni says:

Twirl for the haters, H&M… What a fantastic gesture, it really speaks volumes about their character… I’m so glad they are getting to be their authentic selves💕

  28. L4frimaire says:

This was a really nice gesture for the Sussexes to match the funds that have been raised by their fans. I donated back on Meghan’s birthday and also yesterday for Harry. There was definitely some weird negative energy around Harry’s birthday coming from the Royal circles so was happy they put their focus on something positive. So many girls educational gains have just been disrupted and devastated by this pandemic. There are stories of an increase in teenage pregnancies as girls leave school and some countries are just scrapping the school year entirely because they can’t do distance learning. So happy CAMFED is able to shine a positive light on education with this event. Perfect way to wrap up this fundraiser.

  29. FashionMaven says:

I’m really excited that this fundraiser was a success but I really want to correct the record because there appears to be some confusion about where this fundraiser initiated. This was a #SussexSquad initiative first and then Camfed was CHOSEN by SS as the beneficiary.

One of #SussexSquad had the great idea to create a scholarship for education and then searched for the right charity to focus on. Then she contacted the charity (Camfed) to see if they were open to creating a scholarship and participating with #SussexSquad to raise funds for the scholarship.

Camfed was overjoyed to be selected for this by #SussexSquad and then the campaign was launched.

Of all sites – this one should at least get that right.

  30. blunt talker says:

I really like how their fans coordinate with the charities Harry and Meghan are involved with. I really like that quote from Denzel Washington-fans should use it when the haters of this couple start shit-I know I plan to use against the haters and demons. God bless the Sussex family and keep them safe and well.
