VF: Duchess Meghan always wanted the ‘option to go into politics’

Prince Harry visit to Cardiff Castle

I remember how gossips authoritatively asserted for YEARS that George Clooney was 100% going to run for office, it was just a matter of time, and his political ambitions were the reason behind his marriage to Amal. All of that was false. He married Amal because he knew his love life had become an awards-season punchline, and he’s always known that he’s much more comfortable in the political world when he’s able to move behind-the-scenes. I bring up the Clooney sh-t because the exact thing is happening with the Duchess of Sussex. People keep insisting that Meghan is obviously and clearly going to run for political office and that’s why she’s doing this or that. While her situation is different than George Clooney’s for a number of reasons, I think her goals probably mirror his: she’d rather be rich and not have the world nitpicking her over everything, and she’d rather work to get other people elected, and work on the political causes she cares about without the indignity of running for office. Still, “sources” told Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl that Meghan absolutely has ambitions to run for office.

Her comments about the election may have raised some eyebrows back in Britain this week, but the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle plans to continue canvassing ahead of November’s U.S. presidential election, and hasn’t ruled out a career in politics—including a possible White House run.

Rumors abound that Meghan could run for president in 2024, and she got the attention of the office’s current occupant, who said in a press conference on Wednesday that he is “not a fan” of the duchess. Donald Trump was responding to a video that she and Prince Harry made to promote Time 100’s list of the most influential people in 2020, in which she declared that November’s election is “the most important election of our lifetime.” But it’s possible that 2024 could be even more important for her personally.

“One of the reasons she was so keen not to give up her American citizenship was so she had the option to go into politics,” said a close friend of the royal. “I think if Meghan and Harry ever gave up their titles she would seriously consider running for president.”

However those working closely with Meghan insist she has no plans to pursue a political career. “While there’s no denying she is interested and engaged in politics as a topic, she harbors no ambition to enter a career in politics herself,” said one well-placed source.

Her biographer Omid Scobie has previously claimed Meghan has set her sights on the White House telling True Royalty’s documentary Meghan for President?, “She has her eyes set on the U.S. presidency. Meghan is the embodiment of the American dream. One day we may see Meghan become president.”

However Andrew Morton, author of Meghan: A Hollywood Princess says the duchess is not thick-skinned enough for the role. “I would state categorically that she has no chance of ever running for president. She would be eaten alive,” He said. “You need the skin of a rhino to run for office especially in America which is an utterly polarized nation. Look what happened to Hillary [Clinton], and she has lived and breathed high-octane politics since college. When Piers Morgan took over from chat show host Larry King and used his show as a platform to attack the gun lobby he was shot down by his domestic audience. Americans don’t want lectures from Brits—royal blood or not. Just as we don’t want lectures from well-meaning Americans.”

[From Vanity Fair]

“One of the reasons she was so keen not to give up her American citizenship was so she had the option to go into politics.” Nah. She was keen to retain her American citizenship because she knew there was a chance her princess fairytale could crash and burn and she wanted an exit route. I’m not saying that with any judgment – that is exactly what I would have done if I had been in her position too. Even with the Orange One as potential dictator-for-life, I don’t think I would give up my citizenship for anyone or anything. Anyway, I think this VF piece was just an excuse for Nicholl and her “sources” to bash Political Meg, How Dare She. I think it really bugs all of those colonizers that Meghan is confident, intelligent and politically engaged. She’s no one’s puppet. She’s not going to be a varnished air-headed doll. And so they take their sh-t too far: Meghan is going to run for president in 2024! It’s stupid.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Cardiff Castle and met members of the local community gathered within the grounds.

They are so afraid of this woman. She’s officially up there with Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama in the minds of millions upon millions of inadequate basic white males who live in fear of these women taking over the world.

    • Ann says:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as well. She makes those men apoplectic. How dare she!

    • Snowbunny says:

It’s wild. Beyonce used to be on that list too! My go-to for scared white men coming for me on Twitter is to reply with a Beyonce laughing gif. It gets them to shut up quickly. (I post a lot related to my public interest attorney job).

IMO, Meghan kept her citizenship in case she ever wanted to live in America for longer than a tourist visa would allow. And now here she is, living in America. Also, she would have been stateless if she gave up her US citizenship before getting UK citizenship.

I don’t say this out of kindness – Meghan would never want to run for office when she had the option of philanthropy, which also pays a lot better. Head a foundation, solicit funds, cut ribbons, etc. That being said…I’ve loved some of the work she’s done so far, I’m just not in the mood to praise philanthropy in year 2020.

      • Nyro says:

Yes, I remember them trying to paint Beyonce as radical and a “reverse racist” when Lemonade dropped. Losers.

      • bloemheks says:

My ex is a dual citizen of S. Africa and the US. I don’t know how it is in the UK, but in the US there isn’t even an option to NOT remain a citizen in a country where dual citizenship is allowed. They don’t ask, do you want to remain a citizen of S. Africa as well? You apply for US citizenship. If your home country allows dual citizenship with the US and the US allows dual citizenship with your home country that citizenship simply remains intact.

I think the reason for this is that the country you are applying for citizenship doesn’t have the authority to strip you of citizenship in your home country. The UK doesn’t have the authority to take Meghan’s US citizenship away. Only the US can do that. I do recall they recommended my ex get a US passport rather than renewing his S. African passport because he lives in the US.

      • Nic919 says:

Meghan was born in the US and her citizenship can never be stripped. She has the right to say whatever she wants and if she does want to be president then she has that right.

But really this was tossed out by Katie Nicholl because royalists hate women with opinions and prefer silent submissive doormats. I.e. Kate.

    • Turm alin says:

Although I know it is nonsense, I played a bit with the idea.
Let’s say Megan runs for presidential office, in about ten years time. She wins around 2032 when England has a fresh new king, the keenest of all. So guess who is gonna great her in BP as the new POTUS? I am just laughing at this picture in my head since I read this article 😀

    • Bibi says:

Clearly they’ve gone mad and writing anything that goes through their mind. Meg kept her american citizenship because she’s American. She probably wanted dual. Anyway, im laughing it’s complete garbage. Girl just wants to do some good in the world.

    • Bibi says:

watch monday: meghan wants to be president and harry, His royal highness duke of sussex, british prince is preparing to be first “man” of the united states.
Tuesday: they will go head to head with lazy willie and waitykatie should anything happen to Queen/Prince Charles in the next 4 years. LOL

  2. Merricat says:

It’s a good thing that Katie Nicholl is paid for conjecture and supposition, since she’s continually short of facts.

    • Ginger says:

If Katie Nicholl told me the sky was blue and the grass was green I would still look outside. She has no facts. And the few she had was because she bought them from people hacking Harry’s phone (back before Meghan)
She is disgusting. No one should ever believe a word from her.

  3. TheOriginalMia says:

I stopped reading when Katie Nicholls’ name came up. Lordy. She’s not going into politics. She’s doing exactly what she wanted to do. She’s using her platform to reach people and influence them.

    • Myra says:

That’s my cue to disregard a story, as well. That Vanity Fair is so comfortable to bring its magazine down to that trashy level is so surprising. Anyways, there’s Harper’s Bazaar

    • LNG says:

The article has Omid Scobie saying the same thing…

      • TheOriginalMia says:

And? Contrary to popular belief, he’s not Meghan’s biographer or close personal friend. He’s a reporter like Nicholl. Every word out of his mouth isn’t the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

      • Sid says:

As part of her lawsuit against the Fail, Meghan’s lawyer just submitted a statement to the UK court outlining things from Finding Freedom that were completely incorrect. I like Scobie, but he is not the end-all and be-all when it comes to information on the Sussexes.

  4. Nyro says:

Also, wtf is it with the Brits and this idea that she must have secret political ambitions simply for having political opinion. Like, there are a ton of women in Hollywood who are very politically engaged, even more so than Meghan, and yet you don’t see the hysterics and fear over this in America at all. People may be annoyed but no one assumes that Kerry Washington or America Ferrera want to be president. “OMG, she’s registering voters?! Speaking about BLM? She’s gonna run for president!! We must stop this evil wench!!” Like, what the hell is that? Because it’s hella weird and pathetic to me.

    • Q says:

      Ikr!? 😂

      • Nyro says:

It’s so weird to me. The politically aware do-gooder Hollywood actress is like such a normal and standard thing. Angelina Jolie is like the “Final Boss” version of those women and yet no one’s afraid of her or trying to destroy her. She’s applauded for using her platform in a positive manner and that’s that. There’s no campaign to take her down or people questioning her motives everyday in morning television. It’s weird and basic af to be pressed over Megan’s activism. Like, seriously?! Britain looks ridiculous obsessing over this.

      • Lady D says:

When I think of Hollywood women in politics, Eva Longoria comes to mind first.

      • Anna says:

@Nyro Agreed! There’s the racism part , that’s a major factor. The portrayl of Black women in media. Everywhere we go, it never ends.

  5. VS says:

There are dozens of royals in the uk; why do the royal rota rats continue to write about H&M? didn’t they shout to whomever was willing to listen how irrelevant they would become?
they have 3 futures in the uk…..focus on them!

If most people knew about the royal gossiping jobs, they would choose it as a career option. It is all about fan fiction! no one in the Sussexes camp will talk to this woman; so all lies

    • Sarah says:

The others are DULL and don’t do much of anything. Plus with these two you can get all the angry racists shouting which generates more clicks which = £$€.

  6. Noki says:

No one should ever rush to changing their citizenship, wait a good five years at least. What does she enter the UK with now? I am sure she dropped the process like a hot potatoe 🤣

    • Snowbunny says:

I bet she’s still in the process! I wonder what Harry is in the US on? Maybe that’s why they have a place in Canada too. I would say I’m sure he’ll be able to get a green card easily, but things are pretty crazy right now with immigration. If Trump doesn’t like Meghan, Harry could have a tough time getting a green card.

      • Jaded says:

They don’t have a place in Canada, they were just loaned the use of a sea-side home on Vancouver Island for a while, but they could only stay a max of 6 months. Makes much more sense to go to California where Harry can apply for a green card, then after 3 years of living with an American spouse he can apply for naturalization status.

      • Snowbunny says:

I didn’t say owned. Harry still needs a visa or visa waiver while in the United States, and can’t stay longer than 6 months without leaving for a bit…unless he’s already filed to adjust his status. Which, sure, maybe he did. But if he filed while in the US, it will still take about 2 years for him to get his green card, and in the interim, his travel outside the US might be restricted. So I wouldn’t automatically assume he’s applied for a green card right now, what with USCIS being a total mess and not even printing green cards, and the fact that Trump openly hates his wife and is psycho enough to order USCIS to reject the app.

ETA: But Harry could be here on some other random visa that has nothing to do with his wife’s status. IDK.

  7. Smices says:

Anyone with the slightest conception of how American politics works knows there is no way Meghan is running for president in 2024. It’s completely ridiculous. Some of these “sources” are clearly not American.

    • Nyro says:

That too. They clearly know absolutely nothing about how politics in America works. Like, they really think Democrats are going to give Meghan the nomination in 2024 because she’s royal and told folks to go out and vote. What?! They’re so ignorant and their rantings are embarrassing.

    • booboocita says:

Oh, please. The “sources” are the voices in Katie Nicholl’s head.

  8. ce says:

I could see her being very effective in local politics. Her work with non-profits, entertainment connections and large platform could all be effective in helping people. Do it Meghan!

    • Amy Too says:

Maybe she’ll be President if the PTA at whatever school Archie goes to. Possibly I could see her on a local school board or town council or something like that. I find it absolutely crazy that anyone thinks she would want to run for President in 2024. That’s Kamala’s turn. Or one of the many other awesome people who ran this year. That she would somehow think that she was more capable and had more experience than the 20+ Dem candidates who ran this year is extremely doubtful. She does not seem like the type of person who thinks random celebrities with no political experience should be elected President. (See all of her previous comments about Trump and Trump vs. Hillary). We would have to be working off the assumption that she’s a huge narcissist who wants power at all costs, and while that’s obviously how the RRs and haters see her, it’s not who she is, at all.

What is with that quote from Omid though? Why on earth did he say that? Was it taken out of context? Was he saying that maybe in 30 years she might work her way up through politics to run for President? Or that if she hadn’t married Harry and her life had taken a different turn she might be running for President in the future?

  9. ABritGuest says:

I thought they said her plan since she went to Buckingham Palace as a teen, was to snag a Prince and be the next Princess Diana by way of a divorce and acting career with steamy scenes?

A lot of this is probably because of a Suits video where her cast members voted her person they would vote for as president or something & the courtiers apparently were joking she’s probably interested in running for President in that Shipman article in the Times.

She was a UN ambassador for political participation so not surprising she’s returning to that sort of activism now she’s not a working royal anymore. I doubt Katie Nicholls knows her motivations.

  10. Edna says:

😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 I wish I could get paid to write such made up nonsense . Katie Nichols knows nothing and has no sources close to the Sussexes. Vanity Fair should be ashamed of themselves paying good money for this fan fiction.

  11. GR says:

I though Oprah was the famous woman of color who was running for president…?
Seriously though, I think Nyro is right about the “basic white males”: they all think that when a Black woman speaks up she must be trying to take over.

  12. Ginger says:

Why would Meghan leave one toxic environment just to enter a new one?

  13. Beech says:

Wait, seriously?! MM’s first step into politics is to run for the presidency? What was Kate Nichols imbibing when she wrote that? I see Markle as an advocate, among other issues, for voter registration and get out the vote. Oh Nichols, your imagination has run amok!

  14. Thaisajs says:

    It’s just click-bait.

  15. Becks1 says:

    LOLOLOL.

First – I agree with Kaiser’s assessment – I think Meghan wants to do more behind the scenes political work, and I think as time goes on we will see her become more blatantly political (less, “this is an important election” and more “I support this candidate”) but I don’t ever see her running for office.

Second – if she DOES run for office, she’s not going to start off with the presidency in 2024. Sorry british media. You aren’t going to be that lucky.

  16. Molly says:

The BEST KARMA ever would be for Meghan to POTUS at the same time William is King

  17. Rapunzel says:

Um…the Dems will win this election, and VP Kamala Harris will be running for President in 2024. Since Meg is “intervening” in the election to help Biden Harris (spoiler alert: she’s not), you’d think she’d know that, lol.

  18. L84Tea says:

As soon as I read the title, I laughed. This is pure fan fiction and a new way to spin her words. Up until now, the narrative has been that she was a gold-digger with an agenda to get into the royal family and keep Harry captive under her exotic-voodoo-black-lady-spell, and get her hands on all the emerald tiaras. Now, they made one comment about the importance of voting, and suddenly it’s “Politics were always her plan! Burn her!”

The idiots writing this stuff don’t have any idea which direction the bubbles float up. Instead, they’re drowning in a sea of stupid.

    • Merricat says:

Lol. It suits their narrative of “power-hungry” Meghan–first she wanted to run roughshod over the RF, elbowing the Cambridges out of the way like the pushy American she is, and when that didn’t work out, she decided to take the American “crown” instead. Honestly, these people should just write fantasy novels, they’d make a lot more money and would sleep better at night.

    • MsIam says:

Don’t forget that her ultimate goal is to be the A-list actress she never was! And to be Queen! I guess President will have to wait for a while. *eyeroll*

    • windyriver says:

You reminded me of the great line Queen Latifah has in the movie Hairspray. Happens she’s also referring to an interracial couple, and it’s a good summary of what H/M have been through the last few years. And are still experiencing:

“You two better prepare yourselves for a whole lot of ugly coming from a never ending parade of stupid.”

      • L84Tea says:

Ha! Love that movie. And completely off topic, but I just have to say that Queen Latifah is so crazy beautiful in that movie. The 60’s style makeup and hair and clothes looked so amazing on her.

    • windyriver says:

Check out what’s apparently coming in the November issue of Tatler. Guess everyone wants their piece of the pie. Doesn’t sound like it will be complementary, but Meghan has the cover, wonder what Kate will do to try and compete.

Also an interview with Omid, and whether he’s “Meghan’s mouthpiece“, but more important, cute pictures with his dog.

      • HeatherC says:

It won’t be complimentary but it will outsell the Catherine the Great cover because the so called “cambstans” hate Meghan more than they could ever like Kate. The reasons/motivations behind buying the magazine won’t matter to Cain and Unable, all they’ll see is numbers outdoing theirs in a magazine they “brought to heel” or some such.

  19. Jess says:

They say this about every influential high profile woman. Michelle Obama, Angelina, Oprah, etc. because they know politics taints everyone. No one is a saint in politics and now all politicians are demonized.

  20. one of the Marys says:

It’s amazing how she keeps getting criticized for things *she hasn’t done* All these maybe this/maybe that articles to keep the masses fuming and the money rolling in. Astonishing how readers can be manipulated Wow

  21. Seraphina says:

Now why would an educated and very intelligent woman give up her citizenship when history shows her how BRF treats wives who marry in and shows how backwardly racist they are??? Now, tin foil moment, what IF Harry also said: NOOOOOOO. He knows what they did to his mother and she was a blonde, blue eyed aristo. Her American citizenship was a security blanket, one I would not part with very quickly either.

  22. C-Shell says:

“… hasn’t ruled out a career in politics—including a possible White House run.“

So, what, anyone who hasn’t expressly *ruled out* a career in politics or anything else has all their options on the table? My god, these morons.

  23. Mina_Esq says:

I think she aspires more to the Angelina model than the Clooney model. Angelina mingles with the politicians to the extent that she needs them to pursue her humanitarian causes. I think Meghan wants to nurture similar relationships that will help her pursue more intense humanitarian projects, such as those related to the rights of women and girls around the world.

    • Becks1 says:

I think this site would have a meltdown if Meghan and Angelina ever did an event together, LOL (in a good “we’re fans” kind of way lol)

  24. tee says:

the power they give her lol

  25. Izzy says:

I hope she is someday appointed US Ambassador… to Great Britain.

  26. Jaded says:

Vanity Fair has turned into nothing more than something to line the cat pan with. I do believe that as the years go by Meghan will become more and more a “behind the scenes” influencer and organizer, but taking a run for POTUS is just more of Katie Nicholl’s fever dreams.

  27. L4frimaire says:

I have never gotten politician vibes from Meghan. Also, despite the pearl clutching from the Brits, she comes across as fairly moderate to progressive, and they are just resettling in the US. If Biden wins, 2024 is either him or Harris. If he loses, people will be looking toward very progressive candidates with a deep support base. Lots of stars in Democratic Party and people are looking at AOC. The Sussexes have other ambitions and commitments. They’re not exactly the type the Bernie Bro’s would embrace. I think she will advocate stronger for causes she believes in, and at some point in future, once things settle more for her & H, advocate on behalf of specific candidates. Who knows what will happen in 10 years.I could see maybe an ambassadorship if she becomes a big donor but no way POTUS. Also, she has already worked for the British crown, continues to have her private life raked over and excoriated, so I think she’s so turned off with public life and taxpayer funding.

  28. Mariane says:

Meghan has officially surpassed Diana’s popularity!! If the president was triggered by her and took her vague comments as an attack on him then I’d say that’s a great achievement.
Hatie nickols is back to selling nonsense and speculation. I hope no one is clicking on her articles. I cancelled my VF subscription because of her

  29. Lisa says:

Boris Johnson gave up American citizenship because they wanted all his money

  30. Kat Z says:

I doubt she would for any federal office, then she would then have to renounce all foreign titles or be dragged to court as a violation of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause. More effort than its worth.

  31. Vanessa says:

The Royal Reporters have nothing their just throwing words at the wall hoping that the one things they say Might be true . It’s just a guessing game for them but they wanted the public to think they know what their talking about when it comes to the Sussex’s. They think that because Meghan is talking about voting she automatically wants to run for something in the Future they can’t keep their own lies or narrative about Meghan straight first its she wants to be queen she wants to change the royal family now she wants to run for office . The nerve of some these royal reporters to say that Meghan doesn’t have a thick enough skin to run for office they dehumanize her in every day for years turn her pregnancy into a nightmare Lie about her use her father and half sister to bash her daily and publish her private letter . And Meghan took all that with a smile on her face only say something when it become too much Meghan took all of that and more . Kate couldn’t deal with a Tatler article without threatening to sue

  32. Em says:

If she ever by chance reads this – no matter what, Meghan, RBG, and AOC have to be the three most talked about women in The Americas at current. No matter what, your star is rising. Give em hell.

  33. paddingtonjr says:

I think Meghan is exactly where she wants to be right now: doing charity work, starting a foundation, able to split her time between philanthropy and the entertainment world, being a wife and mother. Going to politics would be restrictive and she would have to put aside some of her own projects while in office. That being said, can you imagine the pearl-clutching if she became president and Harry was the First Man? Talk about William being incandascent with rage; it would be a whole other level!

Slight off-topic, does anyone know if Harry has/could apply for dual-citizenship between the US and UK?

  34. Jackie says:

She hadn’t become a UK citizen yet so how could she have given up her American citizenship? That would have made her stateless.

    • bloemheks says:

When you apply for citizenship in a country that allows dual citizenship with your home country you’re not asked to give anything up. There is no form where they ask, hey, do you still want to be a citizen of X? You simply retain citizenship in your home country. The UK doesn’t have the authority to remove her US citizenship. Only the US can do that and they don’t do that unless you become a citizen of a country where the two countries don’t recognize dual citizenship.

This whole question about her “choosing” whether or not to continue to have US citizenship is silly. What is she going to do? Call up Trump and say, hey I know I haven’t committed treason or become a citizen of a country we don’t recognize, but can you please take my citizenship away anyway?

  35. Mags says:

Yeah, if you have American citizenship you’re pretty golden (well, not currently, but you know what I mean). Getting it is a nightmare. My friend’s husband is a Brit who came to the U.S. for his PhD. They’re married, two kids, but the process still took years. And that’s nothing compared to friends who were brought to the U.S. as children and now fall under DACA…
