Netflix & Vanity Fair released new images for ‘The Crown’ season 4: amazing?!

Netflix’s teaser for The Crown’s Season 4 was something – they’re finally introducing Lady Diana Spencer, who would go on to become the Princess of Wales. From the looks of it, Season 4 charts Lady Diana and Prince Charles’ courtship, wedding and then probably the early days of their married life? It will also feature Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher, an absolutely brilliant piece of stunt-casting. I fully expect Gillian to win tons of awards for Thatcher already.

Anyway, Vanity Fair and Netflix have released some new images ahead of the season premiere. This is actually the first real close-up look at Gillian’s Thatcher drag and Emma Corrin’s Diana drag. I actually think Emma is pulling off the young Lady Diana! I don’t know if that’s a wig or she really got the “Shy Di” haircut, but it looks very much like Diana’s early hairstyle. She’s got the chin-down, eyes up thing going on too. Gillian’s whole look is amazing.

Vanity Fair has even more photos (plus a nice write-up) here. They also made Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor (who plays Charles) their “digital cover.” Is Josh too attractive to play the young Charles? I still haven’t made up my mind about that, because he actually looks quite bangable and Aaron Taylor-Johnson-esque when he’s out of those Charles costumes.

    I can’t wait!
My mother is a HUGE Dianalooney and Emma is doing a magnificent job as Diana. I think i will totally binge watching The Crown this weekend!

    • Noki says:

      Its out,full season 4 ?

    • Seraphina says:

I am with you and I am a Dianna Looney as well. I was in grade school when she married. I do find the eyeliner a bit too heavy though in the pics.

      Binge watching commence. YAY!!!

      • Eleonor says:

        I agree with the eyeliner.
She used to wear it like that around the divorce, and I remember her massive eyeliner during THE interview.
My mother made me watch it with her.
        LOL.

  2. Jessi says:

I’m definitely seeing young Diana but also getting some Young Jodi Foster vibes – anyone else?

  3. Nina Simone says:

I thought that was Jodie Foster!!

    • Bettyrose says:

I would never have thought they looked alike, but they were famous in the same era and must be close in age, so it makes sense.

  4. Becks1 says:

I think Emma Corrin is going to pull it off – I wasn’t sure at first, but the released pics and the teaser definitely have made me into a believer. She’s got Diana’s mannerisms down, or so it seems.

  5. Tiffany says:

Olivia can totally play Princess Anne in the future.

    Seriously.

  6. Faithmobile says:

Josh O’Connor is definitely too attractive to play Charles. He is great in The Durells in Corfu. The Diana casting appears spot on.

    • Gemgirlaaa says:

Charles is shockingly better looking in person (or was). He got out of a car in front of me outside the Louvre and I’m pretty sure my mouth fell open. I mean, I haven’t seen him in a while…but 😉

      • Gogo Girl says:

@Gemgirla: I totally agree. I saw Prince Charles up close in Devon and he is far better looking than we see him in pictures. He’s got the whole mild mannered, charming, older gentleman vibe going for him.

    • Mumbles says:

He is so charming and charismatic in Durrells, I wasn’t sure could pull it off when they announced his casting before last season but he did it with body language and speaking patterns.

I wasn’t sure Emma could pull it off but in that photo of her and Josh lying down, she does look like Diana.

  7. smcollins says:

I haven’t watched a single season of The Crown but I might have to watch this one. The casting seems impeccable.

  8. Sofia says:

I like Emma as Diana so far (we’ve only seen pictures and a few scenes). Josh O’Connor was a great young pre Diana Charles but I don’t know if he’s “old enough” to do Charles’ attitude towards Diana justice – but maybe younger is better to represent the immaturity and jealousy.

I hope they go into Anne’s life this season. She was married by the time the Silver Jubilee rolled around – and Peter was born in November of that year.

  9. Gil says:

Was the actress playing Diana recast? I thought Elizabeth Debicki was casted as Diana Spencer.

  10. Snuffles says:

As I absolutely ADORED Diana, devoured every morsel of Diana: Her True Story and was devastated when she died, I am LIVING for this! I can’t wait!!

Oh, and this gonna be The Firm’s worst nightmare. The LAST thing they want is the public remembering how awful they were to Diana.

    • Lizzie says:

Me too. I read everything about Diana and loved every picture.

You are right about the firm, everyone can experience how awful they were and realize they were just as awful to Meghan.

    • booboocita says:

Hmmmm … I dunno. If The Crown portrays Diana as a sweet innocent caught up in an indifferent and sometimes hostile world that she just didn’t understand, then it’ll be a nightmare for the Firm for sure, given the adulation Diana still gets and the popularity of the show. If she’s portrayed as a vapid teenager who was ill-suited for marriage and life in the royal household, the Firm might get some sympathy, although not much. If the portrayal is even-handed, as I suspect it will be, it won’t look well for Charles and Co.

  11. aang says:

I will never understand Diana’s hair. Those 80’s cuts are so awful. The very short hair from some 90’s photo shoot I vaguely remember really showed off her beautiful face but otherwise her hair always detracted from her beauty in my opinion. I bet she would have had gorgeous hair had she grown it out. I love Jillian Anderson so much but I hate Thatcher with the heat of 1000 suns.

    • Slowdown says:

Also don’t understand that hair nor the adoration she seems to still get today. It’s such a weird thing that the democratic and republican west has this fascination with the most vapid monarchy ever.
The only slightly interesting thing that happened to it is Meghan Markle and she had to leave.

    • Lizzie says:

I loved Diana’s hair. It was so thick and always perfect and perfect for her.
I think there was about a decade after the Farrah look that cute shorter cuts were in style, at least in the US.

    • BW says:

Diana did grow her hair out after becoming Princess of Wales. There was a big to do when she showed up at her first opening of Parliament with the back of her hair rolled up. It totally eclipsed focus on the Queen.

Her long hairdo looked dowdy and she cut it short again after William was born.

    • minx says:

That feathered look was big in the 80s.

  12. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I haven’t seen Jodie Foster in forever. She looks good.

  13. Delphine says:

Ok but that wig could be styled a little better. Diana’s hair was sort of feathered not all choppy chunky.

    • OnyxXV says:

Yes! Diana’s hair was way better than this. The actress sure is capturing young Diana’s shyness perfectly, but that hair is not quite good enough. Diana had fabulous feathered hair!

  14. Dani says:

I think young Charles was actually kinda cute, kind of like young William, but they both aged like rotting cheese lol. The casting has been soooo good for the whole series. I CANNOT CONTROL MY EXCITIMENT.

  15. Blueskies says:

You can really see the resemblance between the William of now and Charles at age 18 (birthday portraits taken by Godfrey Argent). Charles looking older than his years, of course.

The actors portraying Charles and Diana look amazing! The actor playing Dennis Thatcher looks spot on.

  16. Sidewithkids says:

I thought they were doing a movie on Jodie Foster.

  17. charley says:

My friend made Gillian Anderson/Margaret Thatcher’s wig!
She has also worked on peaky blinders, game of thrones and a few other big hits. She’s @staceyhairmakeup on instagram if anyone feels nosey.
(not an ad, can’t imagine anyone here wanting to get a thatcher wig for themselves)
