The Sussexes speak with Malala Yousafzai for International Day of the Girl

There are some things you just can’t plan for. The #COVID19 crisis has made me reflect on how often our lives are at the mercy of things we cannot control. And so many girls around the world are grappling with this same feeling right now. To The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan: I'm so thankful that you sat down with me — virtually, of course — to discuss girls' education and the need to keep girls learning during and after the pandemic. (P.S. my apologies for the second clip, Prince Harry 🤭 😅) ✨It’s more important than ever before that we support and help build girls’ futures. ✨ The link to donate and our full conversation is in my bio. #DayoftheGirl #IDG #IDG20

Sunday was International Day of the Girl, a day to celebrate girls around the world and the issues facing girls around the world. Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai is obviously one of the most visible advocates for girls’ education in the world. Malala has her own foundation and her own YouTube channel, and that’s where she interviewed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It was super-cute! Personally, I think Malala seemed more jazzed about speaking to Meghan, but maybe that’s because she’s already met Harry before. Here’s the video:

She’s a great interviewer. I would like to see Malala have her own talk show! This reminds me of when she visited The Daily Show many years ago and she basically made Jon Stewart cry (oooh, I found that 2013 video – you can see it here).

Malala talks with Meghan and Harry about their educational history and Meghan spoke about how young she was when she realized the importance of her education (and girls’ education in general). Harry admits that he didn’t always appreciate his own education and Malala says, “100 per cent. I think it takes boys slightly longer to understand how important education is. But they get there in the end.” Dunking on Harry, we love to see it.

The Sussexes also talk about the silver lining of the pandemic, and how they’ve been able to spend so much time with Archie and be there for all of his milestones. Harry said they were both there for “his first steps, his first run, his first fall, his first everything.” Meghan said: “And it’s just fantastic because I think in so many ways, we are fortunate to be able to have this time to watch him grow and in the absence of COVID, we would be travelling and working more externally, and we’d miss a lot of those moments… So I think it’s been a lot of really good family time.” They also said Archie loves birds and makes bird noises.

Editing to say that Malala makes me want to cry – both tears of sadness and joy. I have two girls and I cannot imagine anybody trying to deny them the personhood, dignity, and respect that they deserve. I am so happy that he life has become what it is and so proud that she now works to ensure that girls like her also get that chance.

Malala was awesome. I actually learnt a bit from this talk and made me think what I can do to support local schools but also in areas which are more impoverished, more.

I liked Meghan going back into reasons why she was passionate about this area and why she did that work in Rwanda and India. Also was nice she asked Malala about her experience graduating at this time. I liked Harry again acknowledging how tough it must be for people who have less space being on top of each other & how that might impact mental health

Lol to Malala’s Archie mentions and blatantly wanting them to bring him out to say hi. She seemed really excited about their work & what they will do. Understand that the Firm would prefer Harry at least to be doing royal duties still but wonder if Charles or the Queen have at least expressed any pride in what he’s accomplished.

I didn’t know Malala Yousafzai had her own YouTube channel!

I’m totally basic but I would love some new Archie content. A picture with the pup? A back of the head shot? A chubby hand?

I think the only time we’ll get Archie pics is around Christmas (which may not even happen this year due to the fiasco of last year) and his birthday. Anything else will be stories of Archie by the Sussexes (as done here) and that’s… it, I guess. I would totally love to see him because I find babies/toddles/kids in general to be cute and Archie is no exception but considering how his parents have been treated in the press (especially his father as a kid), I think H&M have not totally warmed to the idea of sharing too much of Archie

    • MsIam says:

I think we might have been able to see more of Archie if there had not been that unhinged reaction from Emily Giffen and the League of Karen’s. After that fiasco we may not see Archie again unto he graduates from high school.

Yeah, I still can’t get over how unhinged those people behaved over a mother reading to her child for a charity. They were so triggered and I will never understand how anyone can allow themselves to become so upset over something so wholly separate from themselves. I hope Meghan and Harry will proceed how they intended, so if their intention is to share pics/vids at special time, I hope they do that. If it’s there intention to keep him out of the public domain completely, I hope they do that.

      • Oh says:

Archie is the first child I’ve seen of a public figure parents who gets this amount of disgusting and hate comments…. if I were Harry and Meghan’s I would never share pictures of Archie, at the end of the day he is a child… the crazy and psychics do not deserve to see him

Malala is a straight up BOSS
I love how she has overcome so much and continues to thrive and be a voice for change for young girls everywhere.
I guess she showed the taliban (lower case on purpose) just how much they affected her, huh??? She’s prospering and they’re, what???, more or less gone?
Granted, she had to endure such horror that I cannot even fathom to just merely survive, but she has taken it by the horns and showed the world what she’s made of. (and much respect to her parents, especially her Dad who supported her then and continues to do so to this day when he could easily have backed down)
A while back she met Greta Thunberg. THAT picture was amazing

  5. Malala survival after such ghastly gunshot is something of a miracle. I am always happy to see her thriving and still going places. Meghan and Harry keep does give great interview, I love them and wish them nothing but joy and good vibes

  6. MsIam says:

I saw part of the interview and it was really good. Malala’s story is so compelling and powerful. I had to laugh at what Harry said about how he didn’t always value education. I think that is what people love about Harry, he doesn’t try to sugarcoat things, he admits his flaws and I think that’s rare for a public person. Diana was like that too.

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

Yeah, this is my favorite thing about Harry too. He is just authentic and you literally watch him grow and learn and do better and admit faults and just be human.

  7. Myra says:

I loved the interview. Both are inspirational women and it would be nice to see them pair up on an initiative in the future. I also loved Harry’s comment on taking his education for granted at the time, and how his perspective has changed. It’s also a good reminder that it’s never too late to keep learning and expanding our minds. Whether you graduate at 18, 21, 30 or 50, we are following our own timetable in life.

  8. CC says:

Sometimes I wished Harry talks a bit more. He looks like he’s tired/having a rough time. I am not psycho enough to say it’s because of Meghan lol. Even in the podcast he didn’t talk much. He’s probably struggling with his terrible family and the media and lawsuits, while Meghan is probably the rock atm. But yeah..just want to see him more upbeat!

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

I think he spoke less in this instance because it was more about girls and here were two advocates for girls speaking truth to power and he offered where he could, but had the good sense to listen more, showing once again that he gets it.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

He didn’t speak because he realized he could only bring so much to the conversation. And that’s okay. This is Meghan’s wheelhouse and it would be silly for him to try to match her experience and expertise on the subject when he doesn’t have it.

    • cherriepie84 says:

I noticed that during the interview too and genuinely hoped that he was doing ok! I dont know what it was about his demeanor, hopefully Archie has him busy and he is just tired from all that running around behind a toddler 🙂

The interview itself was very inspiring and I just generally enjoyed a conversation between genuine folks!

  9. Emily says:

The world needs more of Malala and young women like her! I read her book a few years ago and was so impressed by her strength, her resilience, and her bravery. It is also interesting how much her father was key to her receiving an education in the first place (he is/was an educational activist). She really lucked out on a dad who was intent on all his children having access to an education. It totally makes sense for Malala to partner with Meghan and Harry on this kind of topic too.

  10. BnLurkN4eva says:

I watched this yesterday and really enjoyed listening to all of them especially Malala who came off informed and very intelligent. I think these little exchanges are really wonderful and showcase topics that H/M will likely give their paid speeches on. When they first signed, some were doubtful about what they could talk about, but H/M are showing a range of topics that they could utilize for speeches and do an excellent job with them. Meghan as an example can speak all day about empowering girls and how that promotes the health of any community.

  11. MangoAngelesque says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if, after the recorded bit ended, they brought out Archie to meet Malala privately in their chat 🙂
