‘Central Park Karen’ Amy Cooper called 911 *twice* to make false, racist claims

34th Annual Casting Society of America's Artios Awards - Arrivals

While it would never be enforced – for obvious reasons – there is such a need for a nationwide Karen Law. As in, if you act like a f–king Karen in public, you get charged with a crime. Amy Cooper should be the face of the Karen Law. Amy Cooper was the deranged white woman who called the cops on Christian Cooper, a Black bird watcher in Central Park. Christian Cooper asked Amy Cooper to leash her dog and that’s when she called the cops and told them that a black man was harassing her. Christian Cooper filmed the incident. He also said, weeks later, that he didn’t believe she should be charged with a crime, which is a grace I will never have or feel in any way. Especially now that we know this bitch called 911 a second time to claim that Christian Cooper tried to assault her. My God.

Amy Cooper, the white woman who called the police on a Black bird-watcher in Central Park, made a second, previously unreported call to 911 in which she falsely claimed that the man “tried to assault her,” a prosecutor said on Wednesday. Ms. Cooper, who appeared in court remotely to answer misdemeanor charges that she had filed a false report, was negotiating a plea deal with prosecutors that would allow her to avoid jail.

Joan Illuzzi, a senior prosecutor, said that Ms. Cooper in her two 911 calls in May had used the police in a way that was “both racially offensive and designed to intimidate” and her actions were “something that can’t be ignored.” Still, Ms. Illuzzi told the court that the Manhattan district attorney’s office was exploring a resolution to the case that would require Ms. Cooper to publicly take responsibility for her actions in court and attend a program to educate her on how harmful they were.

“We hope this process will enlighten, heal and prevent similar harm to our community in the future,” Ms. Illuzzi said. The case was adjourned until Nov. 17 to give Ms. Cooper’s lawyer, Robert Barnes, and prosecutors time to work out the details of an agreement.

The news of the second call was the latest development in the Memorial Day weekend encounter that had resonated across the country and reignited discussions about the potential danger of false accusations made to the police about Black people.

[From The NY Times]

It is unimaginable to me to think that not only did Amy Cooper pull that f–king stunt ON CAMERA as Christian Cooper recorded her, but then waited until she was no longer on camera, then called 911 AGAIN to claim that he tried to assault her. This piece of sh-t deserved every single thing that happened to her. She lost her job, she became a social pariah, her dog was briefly taken away from her, and now she’s facing misdemeanor charges. Should have been a felony, because she was 100% trying to get Christian Cooper murdered by the police.

She’s only sorry because she got caught. It takes a lot of education and self reflection to overcome that kind of racism and entitlement.

These last few years have been eye opening to all the white privilege I never realized I had. This website and especially the commenters have taught me so much. I’m so grateful for this space!! Our country (our entire world) needs to be educated on racism. We have to change our ways.

Help me to name it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cMgtzjmZXQc&t=295s

    • Yup, Me says:

Exactly- she’s only sorry she got caught and that it happened at a time when folks are so fed up that consequences are being implemented.

She’s actually tapping into a long and storied White Woman History with her disgusting behaviors, though. During slavery, white women got so comfortably vicious abusing and killing Black children that laws needed to be passed explicitly for and about them. Not that it was about the harm to the children though. They were impacting “property” and financial matters.

Bill Burr was right when he said white women need to receive their reckoning just like white men.

      • Anna says:

        @Yup All of this.

      • Sandii says:

Bill Burr is a misogynist and just uses this to divide and conquer. I hate this whole “Karen” thing now standing in for white women. Already so many men are jumping on this wagon. It gets even used for men as in “male Karen”. So now we are not only sl*ts, wh*res and bit*hes… we are also Karens.
I do think intersectional feminism needs to be promoted and should be the norm but I do not think it helps to open a gap between women. We are under attack from so many sides already.

Other than that: this woman is vile and I really hope this also has legal consequences.

  2. Bettyrose says:

And then George Floyd was murdered in the same news cycle.

    • Yup, Me says:

On the same day. Amy Cooper started blowing up first and then the George Floyd situation took over a lot of the conversation and focus.

  3. lanne says:

Send the bitch to the gallows (of public opprobrium)! Bitch is cancelled forever

  4. Cat Friend says:

All I want to say is birdwatchers in the U.K. never appear to be that handsome 💚
Not negating the truly awful things she did and that she was allowed to have that poor dog back
I hope that she has to spend some time in jail it may cure her entitled attitude

Just when I see that guy I just melt …

    • clomo says:

I hope the sensitivity training course she takes is from 6pm to 9pm five days a week for a year.

    • Hyrule Castle says:

But it certainly does negate the fact that a white woman attempted to have him, at the very least, arrested.
      At worse, murdered.

You fawning over him reduces his worth to the sum of his face.

He didn’t press charges because Black men who get “uppity” to white women get murders by lynch mobs.

So yeah, you really did reduce his pain and suffering. Do better.

      • Mac says:

There are no charges to press. Her crime is against the state. Cooper declined to participate in her prosecution because he feels it is performative and does not address the core issue of police violence against BIPOC. Saying he is afraid to participate negates his well reasoned position.

      • Lady D says:

Not that I was fawning, but I am embarrassed by my thoughts and you did teach me something. Sorry and thank you, Hyrule Castle.

      • Anna says:

        Thank you, @Hyrule Castle

  5. Nev says:

Trying to put me over the edge. She’s the President of Karen’s. UGHHHH.

  6. Cookie says:

What the actual… The thing that I find most enraging about this incident is the fact that she felt so smuggly, righteously, and irrevocably confident in her position that she didn’t have to think twice about falsely accusing a black man (twice!) I mean, I’m glad that she’s been proven wrong and is facing jail time but somehow it feels grossly disproportionate to the potential consequences of her actions.

  7. Snuffles says:

There absolutely should be a nationwide law that penalizes people who make false 911 calls and wastes the time and money of local law enforcement. They have enough on their plate and don’t need to deal with racists grievances that a POC is in their mist.

    • lucy2 says:

Pretty sure it is a crime to file a false police report, either to the police or 911, but there should be an added penalty if it’s racially motivated.

  8. Tiffany :) says:

My bf went into the local liquor store the other day, and a woman was having a meltdown. Ranting and shouting “Don’t call me Karen! I am NOT a Karen!!!!” She ended up storming out of the store. Everyone paused, and the guy at the register said”…I asked him to bring up a bottle of Macallan. No one was called Karen!” and everyone laughed…except for the lady that had already marched out of the store.

  9. Liz version 700 says:

All I can think when I read this story is what if she had gotten Cooper killed. He is very forgiving, which is easier since he is alive. But she seemed fine with getting him shot or worse. I don’t think classes help sociopaths. Maybe loosing her job will make her change her behavior enough to avoid camera worthy moments. But she is vicious.

  10. schmootc says:

As with so many things, I don’t think education is going to help this person at this point in her life. When you’re younger, sure, education is the way to go. But, like so many in the GOP now, I think these people are incapable of putting themselves in someone else’s shoes and the only way they learn is when they are personally affected by something. They can’t think beyond themselves. Not that our institutions shouldn’t at least try education, but seems like something of a lost cause.

  11. camille says:

Christian Cooper should thank his sister for making the incident public. When so many were arguing against his sister’s action, I said there was nothing stopping Amy Cooper from calling later on and making a rape allegation. Even with video evidence from the encounter, Christian is put on the defensive once the allegation is made. His proven innocence would have occurred after he lost his job and reputation, if the video was even accepted. This news of Amy Cooper’s second call has sadly validated my fears.

  12. HeyJude says:

This is why I wish Mr. Cooper would be cooperating with the prosecution of her for the safety of society at large. (I very much get why he isn’t though.)

This wasn’t a one-off decision in the heat of the moment, she kept after him. There were clear multiple, prolonged decisions by her to put his life in danger out of spite.

If she’s not given a hard penalty now she’s going to continue to do stuff like this again and again but next time she’ll have a gun to “protect herself” from a black man riding his bike or walking his dog or something and she’ll shoot him.

Literally these people do this shit all the time. Look at the Ahmaud Arbery murder. He was jogging. Those exact people had harassed him by calling the cops on him before. Then they took it up a notch when police didn’t do their bidding.

    Sounds familiar.

  13. Eyepatch says:

Such an angry, hateful person! The guy she accused offers a great lesson in how to deal with these horrible people.
