A Trump appointee is refusing to authorize the Biden-Harris transition

Trump Meets with Retail Leaders

Donald Trump lost the election, but he’s too much of a pathetic loser to acknowledge it. Which is mostly funny. It’s like 99.9% funny and .01% a tragic pain in the ass. The fact that so many elected Republicans refuse to acknowledge that Trump lost is also pretty funny – it’s basically just Mitt Romney saying that Joe Biden won, and no other Republican senator will say it. Everyone in the GOP is in a holding pattern because of Trump’s little fascist baby feefees. But here’s where it gets stupidly destructive: there’s a Trump-appointee in the General Services Administration refusing to do her damn job and begin to authorize all of the regular transition stuff. Her name is Emily Murphy and she must be a ride-or-die death cultist.

A Trump administration appointee is refusing to sign a letter allowing President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team to formally begin its work this week, in another sign the incumbent president has not acknowledged Biden’s victory and could disrupt the transfer of power. The administrator of the General Services Administration, the low-profile agency in charge of federal buildings, has a little-known role when a new president is elected: to sign paperwork officially turning over millions of dollars, as well as give access to government officials, office space in agencies and equipment authorized for the taxpayer-funded transition teams of the winner.

It amounts to a formal declaration by the federal government, outside of the media, of the winner of the presidential race. But by Sunday evening, almost 36 hours after media outlets projected Biden as the winner, GSA Administrator Emily Murphy had written no such letter. And the Trump administration, in keeping with the president’s failure to concede the election, has no immediate plans to sign one. This could lead to the first transition delay in modern history, except in 2000, when the Supreme Court decided a recount dispute between Al Gore and George W. Bush in December.

“An ascertainment has not yet been made,” Pamela Pennington, a spokeswoman for GSA, said in an email, “and its Administrator will continue to abide by, and fulfill, all requirements under the law.”

The GSA statement left experts on federal transitions to wonder when the White House expects the handoff from one administration to the next to begin — when the president has exhausted his legal avenues to fight the results, or the formal vote of the electoral college on Dec. 14? There are 74 days, as of Sunday, until the Biden inauguration on Jan. 20.

“No agency head is going to get out in front of the president on transition issues right now,” said one senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. The official predicted that agency heads will be told not to talk to the Biden team.

The decision has turned attention to Murphy, whose four-year tenure has been marked by several controversies involving the president, an unusually high profile for an agency little known outside of Washington. “Her action now has to be condemned,” said Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.), who leads a House oversight panel on federal operations. “It’s behavior that is consistent with her subservience to wishes of the president himself, and it is clearly harmful to the orderly transition of power.”

[From WaPo]

Emily Murphy’s job is to release “computer systems and money for salaries and administrative support for the mammoth undertaking of setting up a new government — $9.9 million this year.” That money and authorization would allow Biden administration staff to set up government emails, work out of government buildings, begin to do all background checks on political appointments and all of that. It’s also a symbolic moment when Trump administration officials and staff can begin sharing really basic information with the incoming administration. “This is what we’ve been working on, these are the foreign governments we’ve been dealing with,” that kind of thing.

A Biden-Harris spokesperson issued a statement: “Now that the election has been independently called for Joe Biden, we look forward to the GSA Administrator quickly ascertaining Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the President-elect and Vice President-elect. America’s national security and economic interests depend on the federal government signaling clearly and swiftly that the United States government will respect the will of the American people and engage in a smooth and peaceful transfer of power.” Yeah. But everyone in Trumpland is going to follow their leader and pout and whine and stomp their feet. How dangerously petty.

Not surprising but so stupid. It’s going to be a rough couple of months.

  2. Case says:

Good lord. These people. I’m counting down the days to Biden’s inauguration.

I can’t believe how many comments I’ve seen across the internet that are something like, “I didn’t see your support and happiness when Trump won four years ago, didn’t democracy matter to you then?”

I wouldn’t have celebrated if the Empire won in Star Wars or if Voldemort won in Harry Potter. This is not a political opinion – Trump and his followers are very literally the bad guys. History will be very unkind to them. If you can’t tell the difference between Biden, a normal politician, and Trump, an absolute monster, I don’t know what to tell you.

    • Bevvie says:

Dumb and evil are a particularly dangerous combination.

    • MsIam says:

The Obama administration worked with the Trump people on the transition. They were grown ups. To me this is just proof that there was no “restraining force” in the White House trying to control Trump. They were all just all a bunch of f—-k ups who couldn’t get anything done. They are all malicious right down to the core. If Joe Biden thought his years in government and working with the other side would win him any points, I think he is in for a rude awakening.

      • Lanie says:

Much of Trump’s staff refused the transition advice. It’s why there are pictures of Trump cabinet meetings in a poorly lit room. Dumb motherfuckers didn’t know how to turn the lights on because they thought they didn’t need Obama staffers telling them what to do..

      • Ange says:

I very much imagine there’s currently a lot of skeleton hiding and tidying up of the heinously bad, disorganised and perhaps illegal shit they were doing in that house and across the admin which could be why they’re delaying.

    • Couch potato says:

Wow! Yes, democracy matters, that’s why Obama didn’t stop/delay the transition between presidents. Even though everyone with common sense knew it meant four years of a narcissistic crybaby in the white house. Of course you don’t celebrate when the one you support looses. You don’t celebrate when your football team loose the world cup either, but you don’t try to stop them from receiving the cup.

    • Mac says:

Trump is the head of the party. No one is going to cross him because they all want cushy lobbying jobs when they leave the administration. Being on Trump’s bad side would make them unemployable.

      • holly hobby says:

The fact that these bozos work for the head clown is enough proof that they will become unemployable. Seriously a bunch of small minded incompetents.

  3. Erin says:

I hope Anonymous doxxes this woman, bad.

    • LightPurple says:

Anonymous doesn’t have to do it. The home addresses of all agency heads, except for those in law enforcement, are public records, available through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Landline phone numbers too. Her neighbors are not going to be happy with her when the protests move to her street.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

The Lincoln Project has put out a tweet with her photo and the number to call her at – she looks like a stereotypical Trumper. That lipstick colour does NOT suit her.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

That lipstick color hasn’t suited anyone since 1987.

      • holly hobby says:

Yes that lipstick color looks like Avon’s reject line. I looked at her bio in Wikipedia. She got a law degree (HA!) but not a practicing attorney. She also looks like the MAGATS that attend the nazi rally.

It is a shame she is desecrating GSA. It is a famously apolitical faction of the government but we know who she is siding with.

One attorney is working with the press to FOIA GSA. They are going after her. He actively solicited journalists who are game on Twitter. All they had to do was fork over the filing fee and he’d work pro bono on the rest. Miss Emily will regret doing this.

      • The Recluse says:

Yep, I bet the offices of this Trump appointee have probably been slammed today, also her Twitter, etc.
She is going to wish she had done her job.

  4. grabbyhands says:

God, it is so fucking galling that this woman is allowed to subvert, even to the point of endangering national security, the course of transition – all to placate the bloated ego of a narcissist moron who refuses to accept that he lost.

This is why I won’t fully be able to celebrate until Inauguration day – these monsters are going to use every last second to try and screw the Biden/Harris team over as much as they can so they are handicapped right out of the gate.

    • Amy Too says:

I was watching the news yesterday and one of the things they said was that in the aftermath of 9-11, when they were investigating what went wrong and if it could’ve been prevented, one of the issues was that because the Bush administration’s transition team was held up by the court case around the election, they didn’t have enough time to work with the outgoing administration and learn everything they needed to from them. The transition was too rushed because it started so late. It led to the Bush administration doing too much “learning on the job” when it came to National security issues. And then within their first year, there was this huge terrorist attack. Transition teams working together matter a lot. It’s so important to have that smooth transition from one administration to the next and for A) the outgoing team to do as much as they can to make it easier for the incoming team and B) the incoming team to actually participate in the meetings and listen to the outgoing team and C) for there to be enough time for all of this to take place.

    • Anna says:

That’s the thing: it’s so, so dangerous. I can’t understand how one person can be in charge of this and potentially cause such a great danger to our entire country.

  5. bluemoonhorse says:

Expect to see Biden file a lawsuit about this pretty damn quickly. He has a huge team of constitutional lawyers so yeah, Trump’s throwing the chessboard over won’t work.

    • Lauren says:

And along with the team plenty of cash. Team Trump is in for a lot of hurt from here till January.

    • Katie says:

I’ve been wondering about this? Is there a law that they are breaking here? Or has it always been a “good faith” process? Because I’m the past we didn’t have a fascist president/wanna be dictator?

      I

      • Original Jenns of says:

I’m not sure there is a law because in the past, these have all been “normal” politicians whi have followed precedent. I think these 4 monster years with this orange poop stain are going to change a lot of things since he basically went rogue and did what he wanted. A lot of our admin depends on people acting decently. I expect new laws to be pushed forward so future sitting presidents are a lot more tethered, and I also expect Republicans to push back since it’s the only way they can use their power now. Praying that more and more youths of color get involved in politics and the next election turns the senate blue.

      • Pandora says:

Nope – not breaking the law. Only norms. There’s an excellent podcast from RadioLab” called “What if?” that explains much of how this is predicted to go and what laws are being challenged.

  6. Lizzie says:

Perhaps we do need the supreme court to step in.

  7. MaryContrary says:

GSA phone number to let Emily Murphy know that she needs to do her FUCKING JOB on the behalf of the American citizens she’s serving:

    844-472-4111

  8. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I really really really need to see some arrests.

    • Lizzie says:

Agree. Add DeJoy to that list.

      • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

And all the Republicans who are currently online plotting violence against Americans. Da fuq? Having social media shut down an account is NOT how we handle terrorists.

  9. Seraphina says:

Maybe i am not taking this seriously, but from what I have heard many say this is simply Trump’s PR attempt and no real evidence is showing what Trump claims. Even the republican election’s attorney Ben Ginsburg has been very vocal that this is a ploy, there is no real evidence, this is not the Gore/Bush election and that the GOP is destroying itself all in the name of Trump. And then we have the sad millions who are believing the hype. The next few months will be very interesting indeed.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

It’s not necessarily Trump we need to worry about. Yes yes he has two months and can nuke the world. But the crazy voters assembling online to commit violence against Biden voters? That deserves attention. That deserves action.

      • Anna says:

Agreed @Mabs And Biden-Harris team need the transitional power in order to protect themselves and us against this.

  10. Bella says:

Do they usually wait until the states certify the votes? or is it written that it officially starts after the electoral college votes, but the tradition is earlier?

    • MaryContrary says:

No. As soon as it’s apparent that the winner is clear they sign the letter to get funds moving.

  11. jferber says:

    Goddamn it. I’ll call her.

  12. Nikki* says:

    GREAT: back to stress eating!

  13. Emily says:

There are zero consistent opinions held by Trump cultists other than Trump is a hero and victim.

They wanted the election called on election night when it looked like Trump might win and now they cry that media can’t decide elections (forgetting that the media are reporting on votes, not deciding). They are crying about democracy while arguing that votes don’t matter and the electoral college will decide the election. The cognitive dissonance is astounding.

I hope this woman loses her job.

    • holly hobby says:

Oh she will. New regime, new managers. It’s always been like that. The holdovers are usually the competent staff. Biden already recruited Rick Bright (the whistleblower that quit HHS) back to the COVID taskforce.

  14. Anilehcim says:

I’m a lot less concerned about any of Trump’s bullshit or the fact that he might even have to be physically removed from the white house… I’m concerned about how his absolute worst, most deplorable supporters are going to behave when they finally realize that their god king isn’t getting that second term. And even more concerning…. the vice president is a proud black woman. There’s no way that these fucking crazy racists aren’t going to absolutely lose their shit. I honestly fear for the future because so many of these people are on the fringe of society and I think we’re about to see A LOT more violence.

So it’s like, believe me, I’m thrilled, but the bullshit is not over. I’m surprised there hasn’t been more violence, but I think that’s only because Trump’s most loyal fans believe him when he says he won this election and they believe he’s going to remain in office. It’s like Dave Chappelle said this weekend on SNL. thank god for Covid because it’s the only reason we saw a down-swing in public shootings. I feel like right now so many of us are so happy, but it also feels like the calm before the storm because Trump is so uniquely dangerous in the way he stirred up the worst members of society and now that they feel like their power is being taken away, they’re going to act out.

    • Josie Bean says:

This is not helped by the fact that some Republicans, such as Cruz and Graham are backing Trump’s claim of voter fraud. Trump carried on about voter fraud months ago – he has no credibility yet other Republicans remain silent about his claims. They can all see it is getting the Trump supporters all riled up and things could get very dangerous.

      • Anilehcim says:

Exactly! And this really has me worried for the future. Mitt Romney apparently gave an interview yesterday where he said Trump will never go quietly because it just isn’t in his nature, and this is true. It’s also true of his base. You have these crazy people who genuinely believe that there’s corruption and fraud afoot and they’re losing their minds over it. This is going to get ugly and dangerous.

      • MsIam says:

The same people who vote for Trump vote for them. Democrats don’t. So their hands are tied and it’s why they look spineless. Plus if they go against Trump some QAnon nutcase will be waiting in the wings to take their place. It’s happening all over the country. I think some of them may see themselves as the lessor of two evils. It’s a horrible place for the country to be in.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Exactly, this is what I’m saying, or trying to say. Homegrown terrorists are currently assembling and plotting. They are. From all walks of life. From janitors to police commissioners. Violence is being incited.

      • Anna says:

Yes. I’m really scared about this. Honestly, I just stay at home as much as possible, though as we have seen, even in our own homes, Black people are not safe.

    • Anna says:

      You’re absolutely right.

  15. jferber says:

I went onto the website GSA (U.S. General Service Administration) and left an e-mail for Emily Murphy to stop obstructing the election outcome. Lordy. The website is http://www.gsa.gov.

  16. Leah says:

Cuff her. She’s going against the will of the people by keeping a would be autocrat in office.

This is not what the founders wanted for this country.

  17. MerlinsMom1018 says:

If I had the money, I would just hand it over to #TeamBiden/Harris and say make it the biggest and most bad ass inaugural ever!!!!
Oh what’s that? Repay???? Nononono just doing my part as a patriotic American

  18. Lizzie says:

Biden and each state has to be strong about this. Dumph wants to try to delegitimize Biden like he did with Obama birtherism. There are still people who believe he was born in Kenya.

  19. Xiolablue1971 says:

As a longtime civil servant in state government, the failure to acknowledge transition is so petty and damaging and incredibly frustrating to civil servants everywhere. All we want to do is assist in providing information, to fulfill our ethical responsibilities, to keep our agencies running properly to serve the public — and elected jackholes being petty get in the way. This has happened before in my local state government and it is frustrating at minimum, gets in the way of services at maximum, and is a terrifying environment to work in for every dedicated civil servant. If you are not authorized to act as you know you should, you face the inevitable conflict between ethics/duty and chain of command that causes content experts to leave. I hope, for everyone’s sakes, that Trump and his appointee move forward to keep the wheels of government turning as they should. I am sorry for this mess, it makes my stomach hurt in solidarity.

    • Juniper says:

As a fellow state government employee, I concur. I always like to think there are three levels at an agency; The appointee, their direct staff, and then the people who are the employees of the agency. It’s the appointees that cause all the friction, and it’s so frustrating.

  20. sassafras says:

    CALL
    YOUR
    REPRESENTATIVES.

The 9/11 Commission’s report said that one of the reasons that the Bush Administration was not prepared for 9/11 threats was the DELAY of the transition in 2000. A delay in transition is a NATIONAL SECURITY issue.

There’s no good reason for the transition not to start. In the extremely unlikely event that the Supreme Court overturns 50 state’s elections (as some on the right seem to be counting on), and Trump wins a new election, then the transition was for nothing and he can keep all the petty crooks in his admin. But there’s no harm in just letting the Biden-Harris team start to plan safely in a pandemic.

    CALL. TODAY.

  21. Liz version 700 says:

It is against federal law to delay the transition. Given that dear leader is on his way out she should really give this some thought.

  22. ChloeCat says:

After trying to call this woman for nearly an hour & getting nowhere, I was given her e-mail: emily.murphy@gsa.gov. I’ve already sent my tersely worded e-mail.

  23. Mel says:

I’m looking forward to seeing him forcibly removed from the WH.

  24. Thirtynine says:

If she isn’t doing her job, then she only has until January before she’s out of a job. Hope she’s ready for that. Talk about shooting yourself in the the foot. Unbelievably petty.

  25. SM says:

I do not find this funny at all. The fact that there are 70 million people who do not give a shit about democracy, decency, integrity or in fact reality, a second biggest majority that ever has participated in an election, a majority enough to decide the direction of this country is alarming and horrible. The fact that they will be fueled now by this delusional sociopath cheeto is infuriating to me. And the fact that republicans are missing their spine and are not putting an end to it means that their strategy for 2024 is to further use the division, they have zero intention to cooperate with the Government elected by over 75 million people. I wouldn’t be surprised of their strategy is to find another aspiring tyrant minus the clown’s clothes, more articulate and less dumb middle aged white man to replace Trump in the future. If republicans can’t draw a lesson from the election and the evidence point to that, the part will stay on this course remaining a huge danger to democracy beyond Trumpy dumpy.

  26. jferber says:

I wrote an email to this bitch and I got an email back that I’d be answered in 24 hours. They gave me the phone number for the GSA /NCSC as 800-488-3111. Storm her phone lines!

  27. pottymouth pup says:

who are the other Philly burbs folks here? Have you guys had to deal with Trump parades blocking up traffic? A friend of mine mentioned a 100 car/truck parade, all vehicles decked out in Trump flags, honking & screaming as they drove down 23 in Phoenixville. Another friend noted that Berks County has a large Trump group page and they plan on having a bunch of parades and protests.

    • DB says:

I’m in the Philly burbs too (Chester County). I haven’t seen any caravans of Trump supporters, but I work from home and don’t go out much. I’m so glad that Biden and Harris won, and that PA delivered the victory. But I’m absolutely shocked and disgusted by how close the election was. How in the f did Trump GROW his base? I don’t understand. As for this petty woman, someone ought to remind her that the things she’s holding up are THE PEOPLE’S…they don’t belong to Trump. This whole thing is probably an intentional delay so they have time to delete/shred incriminating documents.

  28. jferber says:

SM, I agree with you totally. Next time they will find a competent dictator.
