Megan Thee Stallion’s AMA performance freaked out ABC’s censors

Last night’s American Music Awards felt like such a throwback to the pre-Covid era. There were a number of artists on-site, performing live, with an in-person audience. Sure, the audience was limited to maybe dozens of masked people in the balcony area of the Microsoft Theater in LA, but still – it wasn’t actually the best look? The AMA producers claimed that they were doing advance testing and testing on-site during rehearsals, and there would be an abundance of masks backstage (and few masks on stage, as it turned out). All to put on a show which… honestly could have been done virtually the entire way through.

I watched about an hour of the show, and the performances were pretty good. I was STUNNED that producers put Megan Thee Stallion on in the first hour of the show, when (arguably) younger kids were watching – her performance was very sexy and booty-intensive, and sources claimed that ABC’s censors were “freaking out” in advance. Megan also won Best Song – Rap or Hip-Hop. No IDs on her two outfits but that slinky black bodysuit was working overtime, let me tell you.

Here’s Ciara in Balmain. I hate this dress, and I hate that it matches the AMA background!

Dua Lipa was one of the few artists to do everything remotely – she was in London, and she accepted an award via video link-up, and she performed in London too. Her “red carpet” look was Versace.

Ugh, Megan! I cannot get her song out of my head! Body-ody -ody -ody -ody -ody -ody -ody -ody -ody -ody. Good for her!

  2. MapleAngel says:

Gross. The performance, the timing, the audience during a pandemic. All of it, gross.

  3. ethy says:

I don’t see the big deal, she’s not wearing any less than Victoria Secret models did for the shows they used to put on.

  4. manda says:

Ciara’s Balmain looks like a sexy judge’s robe. I kind of like it!

  5. Aang says:

I had the show on mute for three hours waiting for BTS to perform. But we did turn it up for her performance. She is very entertaining and I wish I could twerk like her. I didn’t see anything wrong with her performance but do think all performances should have been remote and no audience. ( I hope BTS gets a post. Their new album just dropped and they are setting streaming records again. )

  6. Ariel says:

Anybody else think Ciara came to the show in her bathrobe? I mean, good for her, it looks comfy.

my favorite lady <3 meg is so lovely

I mean, in the clip it’s just dancing.

No grinding, no faux violence, no ripping of bodices to reveal nipple piercings.

Just the female body, dancing. And with talent.

I have no issue with it.

  9. ME says:

I watched the whole show, and with the exception of Billie Eilish, all the female performers had risky performances. Lots of skin and booty shaking. I guess this is what to expect when watching a music awards show.

  10. Livvers says:

Last night was the first time I’ve ever knowingly heard or seen Dua Lipa perform, and I could *not* take my eyes off her backup dancers. They were very charismatic!

Was this an ‘off’ performance for Dua Lipa, or is she not the most engaging live performer? (Or am I just too old).

  11. Marigold says:

She looks like a good dancer to me. I like it! She has great control.

  12. Veronica S. says:

I mean…that’s kind of her brand lol. If you schedule Megan Three Stallion, you should expect a highly voluptuous woman twerking on your stage at some point. Also, good for her wearing flat shoes and letting the dancers do the same instead of a riskier heel.

This being said, this whole event was…not good. I get why everybody is burned out, but these larger shows have enough people involved that they should damn well know better.

  13. Amando says:

I want to like Megan so bad…her part on Cardi’s song was amazing…but I just don’t care for her solo stuff. That Body chorus is awful.

  14. J ferber says:

I like her for a lot of things, including ripping the guy who shot her on her new album. Strong women who are resilient always have my respect and support.

  15. Faye G says:

I only tuned in for BTS, but I’m glad I watched the entire show because Megan absolutely killed it! Taraji did a great job hosting, it was overall a well produced show.

  16. Joanna says:

From what I saw, it’s not scandalous! That’s kinda standard dancing that you would see out at the club. No big deal to me.
