The DM has competing essays about whether the Cambridges are covidiots

The Royal Family thank Key Workers at Windsor Castle

From what I can see, there’s no new information about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge flouting the “rule of six” pandemic rules with the help of the Earl of Wessex and Countess of Wessex. Sophie, Edward, William, Kate and their children (five total kids) had an accidental meet-up at Luminate, an outdoor Christmas “experience” on the Sandringham estate. William and Kate have been staying at Anmer Hall, which is on the estate, but Sophie and Edward live some distance away, and no one is sure if they skipped “tiers” and lockdown measures just to visit their CROWDED Luminate thing. The two families sort of met up, alongside their protection officers, and the whole group was easily twelve people. As they’ve done throughout this year, William and Kate fail at every level to model good and responsible pandemic behavior.

So what is new? Well, the coverage of the Royal Covidiots has been international and brutal. Even the Washington Post had a big story about it. And now we’re at the part of the controversy where British commentators have to give their “takes.” The Daily Mail published a lengthy two-essay piece by Sarah Vine (pro-Cambridge) and Jenni Murray (the Cambridges are covidiots). Some highlights:

From Sarah Vine’s piece:

The idea that going on a walk with your family might be in breach of any sane rule is one that many people — myself included — still haven’t really got their heads around. Nor, quite honestly, do I ever want to. I will do my best to comply; but I will never, ever come to accept these regulations as anything other than an utter abomination.

That something so completely natural and inoffensive as greeting a relative should somehow, in the dying days of 2020, constitute a quasi-criminal act is a state of affairs so completely, utterly, desolately depressing I don’t really want to think about it. But think about it I must, as must we all. Because, as these pictures show, it can happen to anyone, even a couple with armies of advisers paid to remind them what to do.

Look, I know the arguments. They’re royals, they should know better, yadda, yadda. But they’re also people. People, by the way, who have been complete superstars through this whole nightmare. Upbeat, ever-present, generally putting themselves and their young family at the disposal of the public, reporting for morale-lifting duties whenever the occasion demanded it.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a lot of credits in my book. I refuse to be cross with them about this. In any case at least they’re here, in tier-strewn Blighty like the rest of us, which is more than can be said for some people, wafting around their £11 million mansion in California waffling on about raindrops.

From Jenni Murray’s piece:

Angry and disappointed. That was my reaction when I saw that nine members of the Royal Family — plus bodyguards — had been gallivanting together at Sandringham on Sunday evening. Norfolk is in Tier 2, where the rules state that six people, including children, can meet outdoors. That’s the Rule of Six, folks — not nine. How can they claim they didn’t know? Royal schedules are rigidly planned. Advisers and, one would assume, police protection officers, are paid to know the rules and advise.

I am, on the whole, a big fan of Kate and William. They usually get things right. They have been impressive this year, touring the country and offering their support to ordinary people. Yet, surely, it is the duty of the future heir to the throne and his wife to lead by better example.

Thus I joined the many thousands of us across the country who’d never thought we would be home alone at Christmas, but have realised that staying safe and keeping those we love safe is paramount. Those who chose to stick to the rules, however painful they may be. Yet the Earl and Countess of Wessex, with their two children, and William and Kate and their three, most likely through thoughtlessness, looked to be having a good old festive catch-up, with not a care in the world.

Yes, they are in Tier 2. But it is the Rule of Six, not the rule of nine that applies in such regions, when outdoors. Surely they knew they were taking a risk, however socially distanced? If not, they jolly well should! They are the very people in a position to influence those who might be wavering over whether or not to follow the rules.

Whatever their motivation, it was a mistake to commune with one another when you’d have to live under a stone not to know there is a new, highly contagious variant of Covid-19 spreading across the country, particularly prevalent among children like their own. Yes, it’s unnatural. But this crisis is unnatural for all of us.

[From The Daily Mail]

Vine’s argument seems to be that since everyone was white and posh in this situation, they can be forgiven unlike a certain interracial couple who fled the British racists’ smear campaign. Jenni Murray’s piece gets to the heart of the real issue, and while she doesn’t say this in so many words, it’s been happening over the course of the year: Will and Kate have failed, at every level, to read the room, and to model good pandemic behavior and to show their country that they all should take this virus seriously. I think many people would have been willing to perhaps give the Cambridges and Wessexes a pass if this was a one-off, one screw-up in a year full of the Windsors taking the pandemic seriously. It’s not. The Cambridges alone have a laundry list of f–kups in 2020, including hiding William’s coronavirus, wandering around maskless constantly, the stupid Royal Choo Choo Tour, and on and on. They’ve shown their inner Trumpian qualities and it has not been pretty.

William and I are idiots. Sarah Vine is one too.

    • Sojaschnitzel says:

Agreed. Also someone should do a drug test on that Sarah Vine person. I don’t know what’s she’s taking but that must be a hell of a fun drug.

    • Mac says:

Can we take a step back and ask why Luminate wasn’t canceled? Events that draw large crowds shouldn’t be taking place during a pandemic. The BRF is so freaking clueless.

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

This is the question of the day. Regardless of what Tier Sandringham is in, should the royal family be leading by example and not put on or attend non essential events that could potentially spread the virus? The Trainbridges have no common sense, that we know. But surely the advisers, PR and handlers must at the very leat be aware of the optics? Watching them lurch from one shambolic mess to another is incredible. Now on to the Queen’s speech on Christmas day. How she can look anyone in the eye and parrot her lines is beyond me at this point.

      • Lizzie says:

If masks were required it would be okay. We have something similar and everyone wears masks and distances.

      • EllenOlenska says:

Very much not pro royal but I can see why the event was offered as it is outside and maybe cheery for the nearby area to have something festive and relatively safe to do ( I don’t know if it’s very expensive or free or whatever, just that it appears to be outside and that if everyone followed the rules it might be a nice outing in a sad year)

Why the heck the royals didn’t spread it out and go over two different nights is beyond me.

Had it not been for their devil’s deal with the press and the obsession with Harry and Meghan, they would have been criticised far more than they have been this year.

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

I applaud all of this! The selective amnesia of the British media when is concerns the keens is beyond laughable. The British public see them for what they truly are. Welfare dependants who are constantly embiggened in some faustian pact while the financially independent royals on the other side of the pond are lambasted for actually making their own way in life.

      • Zaya says:

You can add William light of the virus…at least twice. Once in ireland, and the second time when they were meeting with first responders.

      • February-Pisces says:

Taking George shooting ? Gawd I almost forgot that one. I can’t imaging what a child that young is suppose to think of his parents shooting dead poor animals right in front of you. Most children adore animals and are fascinated by them, it’s lovely to see.
But Normalising murdering animals is basically breeding the empathy gene out of them whilst they are still young. I saw the little girl grace who was bridesmaids at the Keens wedding pictured holding an dead animals heart in her hands with a big smile on her face. These aristos really want their young to grow up as cold and heartless as them.

      • swirlmamad says:

“I saw the little girl grace who was bridesmaids at the Keens wedding pictured holding an dead animals heart in her hands with a big smile on her face.”

Ugh @February-Pisces, really???? That is beyond sick.

    • amaznapril says:

Yes, funny she needed to bring up Harry and Meghan… As always…

      • MyOpinion says:

@ amaznapril, and she did in such a disgusting and vindictive manner as well! Sarah Vine seems to be suffering from an ongoing petty party as well as the rest on the RR and British press!

      • Winter Day says:

        @Amaznapril you had the same
though I did. Harry and Meghan minding their own business in California and yet, they are being dragged into the Cambridge’s hot mess. W&K are beyond idiots. What part of wear a mask, follow the rules and observe social distancing do they not understand. Good God….

    • Eleonor says:

      Covidiots.
      End of it.
I have read that Prince Philipp wrote a thank you letter to one of his patronage, one linked to the education, thanking them for their work. When I read the news I thought: this is how it’s done. A 100yo old retire man can DO BETTER than this two put together.

  2. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

Of course these stupid women had to make it about H&M somehow, and to offer sycophantic, honeyed praise to the hapless UK based couple – despite the very gentle chiding of Murray’s piece. I thought the Daily Heil had dirt on Penis with Teeth? (They certainly don’t need to praise these voids for, well, anything, let alone the Pandemic Express. Comforting the natives, indeed.) Why not spill it? They’re getting nothing good out of them, after all.

    • Keen Kate says:

The anti piece by Jenni was still sycophantic:

“I am, on the whole, a big fan of Kate and William. They usually get things right. They have been impressive this year, touring the country and offering their support to ordinary people.”
Oh look, they tried to help the ordinary folk

      • Chaine says:

“Offering their support” by WHAT??? Did william go back to flying the air ambulance to take COVID patients to the hospital? Did Kate lead her kids sewing masks and distributing meals for healthcare workers? Because if not, I’m not sure what either of them has done to support anyone…

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Ohhhhh dontchaknow??? They offered a hearty WELL DONE over Zoom. And called a few Bingo balls,.

      • mytwocents says:

Keen Kate, totally agree, Jenni’s piece was better but still gross.
I found this article from Australia that I wanted to share with you all here, which summarizes all we talk about, how Meghan and Harry are more popular and how it’s bad news for Kate. The best part was this one line : The monarchy has never really had an alternative to be judged against. Now they do.
I loved it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
        https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/celebrity-life/royals/meghan-and-harrys-twitter-win-spells-bad-news-for-kate/news-story/b5cb9583ff6837fbfd3066f5e7c3ae7e

      • Farfromreality says:

        @mytwocents Loved the article. Thanks!

      • Lorelei says:

@MyTwoCents that is a GREAT article! Thank you for sharing!

      • JT says:

A great piece, but still sycophantic. W&K do not want to work. At all. Kate’s survey will go nowhere because they’ve already mention that it won’t change uk policy. So how can there even be results in the first place? Earthshot? We’ll see how that goes after the first year that prizes have been awarded. And mind you, William has already given himself an out. He only “hopes to be involved” for the next 10 years, he may well leave the project when he’s bored, or worse, if it fails.

      • MyOpinion says:

@ mytwocents, thank you for sharing that article!! It was lovely!!

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

        JT
Exactly. The article praised the early years work like it truly will impact school and family funding. And that Kate directly deserves all the credit for fixing everyone’s childhood from here on out in their region.
And while H and M will be popular and wealthy William and Kate will still be king and Queen. Which… means that his argument about proving the BRF is worthy of funding and relevance even while being upstaged by TikTok loving Tesla drivers.

How did any of this spell bad news for Kate?

  3. Lauren says:

Of course we should forgive Willnot and Cannot. They are white, and how dare the Sussexes not be in Britain to distract from the Keen ones mistakes? Btw Kaiser there is is a typo ” I think many people would have been willing to perhaps give the Cambridges and Sussexes a pass if this was a one-off” I think you meant Wessexes here.

  4. Sofia says:

Vine’s piece was fairly typical pro-Cambridge that I’m not surprised about. So I’m not going to comment on that. Murray’s is not and while it’s nowhere as negative as it would have been if it was another certain couple, I can at least appreciate her going “Look they made a mistake and fucked up”.

When you’re paid millions a year in exchange for being ambassadors and a point of “pride” in the country, you should be going above and beyond and be an example. But they couldn’t even follow the basic government guidelines.

And yes mistakes happen but they could easily apologise for this and say how they’ll be more mindful in the future. But they haven’t and they won’t because their motto is literally to stick their head in the sand until it all blows over

    • Nic919 says:

It’s a start but for the amount of criticism that H and M got for taking Elton John’s jet once and thus destroying the globe, this is pretty slim pickings. Billy and Cathy were supposed to thank the first responders, not create more work for them. WAPO certainly is more harsh and does not pretend the pandemic express was a good idea either. If this was Ivanka and Jared, many of the people staying quiet would be saying something. They were careless and thoughtless as they have been throughout the year, specifically about covid. It’s not a good look for a future king to be so anti science and selfish. You can bet he caught covid because he didn’t take any precautions when he was out gardening.

      • Midnight@theOasis says:

Even the New York Times wrote about this:
British royals photographed breaking rules as England endures virus variant.
        https://www.nytimes.com/live/2020/12/22/world/covid-19-coronavirus#british-royals-photographed-breaking-rules-as-england-endures-virus-variant

      • Sorry I was trying to post this under MyTwoCents worth link to Australian article link posted above under No. 2

Australian article is still embigging Kate….who now has to compete with those outlaw Sussexes: Quote from article ——

“Kate’s Early Years initiative, which was ramped up this year with a landmark national survey about parenting, will be her legacy, and could help profoundly shift government thinking and spending. The potential of her work to have a truly significant impact on British society is very real and to her immense credit. Let us now, momentarily, pause and give the woman her due.”

What the hell? —- truly significant impact —- give me a break. 🤦🏻‍♀️

      • Nic919 says:

Yeah that Australian Royal “expert” clearly has no clue about basic child psychology because anyone with a first year undergrad course saw how the survey was meaningless and ignored the first hundred years of established theories on child development.

    • HoofRat says:

My take is W & K really do want – unconsciously- to sink the monarchy. That way they’re that much closer to having all the privilege and no responsibility at all. ‘Course, they won’t get to swan about in ermine-trimmed robes, but sacrifices must be made.

      • JT says:

Interesting theory, seeing how little they are doing to actually maintain it. They’ve spent 10 years lowering the public’s expectations in regards to their work that by the time they reach the throne, they’ll barely show up and probably won’t even have to. The Brits might just shrug and hope George will be different.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

I could SWEAR I DID hear/read them say they DO WANT to lower expectations, and that they want to do a “handful” of charities instead of the hundreds the Royals have now. If I can find it again, I’ll post the link back here.

  5. Britt says:

The only thing this has done is prove what people have been saying about the media bias and coverage especially in regards to Harry/Meghan and I can’t believe the BM are dumb enough to keep going. People are paying attention and if they want to keep hitching their hopes on the Cambridge’s while making themselves Look worse than they already are, keep at it. The media aren’t benefiting at all from this Cambridge syphocant snoozefest. The Cambridge’s are actually more controlling and smarter than I give them credit for. They have made it impossible to have media criticize them because the media did the most regarding the Sussexes. They have to keep praising them and if they are critical, it’s very bare minimum. You can’t tell me the media secretly hate this.

    • Amy Bee says:

      Exactly.

    • Nyro says:

It’s been refreshing to see so many non-sussex squad folks, civilians if you will, drag the Cambridges and the sycophant British media over this. I’ve seen so many people with blue checks call out the clear bias in the BM, many of those tweets going viral. Tons of “if this were Meghan and Harry…” And plenty of “I’m sure they’ll find a way to blame this on Meghan somehow”. Everybody sees it now.

      • Ginger says:

This must terrify the British press. They have never had push back before. Before Meghan, they could push whatever narrative they wanted. They smeared Meghan so bad that everyone is seeing their obvious bias. It’s glorious.

    • February-Pisces says:

“Keep hitching their hopes on the Cambridge’s” yes to this. The Brit media backed the wrong horse and they know it. There may be some benefit to their alliance with the Keens, mostly because they have them backed against the wall with all the dirt they have on them. But they know the Keens are running dry and don’t have much left to bargain with. Sussex’s leaks have dried up and kids pics don’t generate that much interest anymore. But harry and Meghan are never coming back, so all they can do now is push their embiggening campaign further in the hopes that it somehow turns the Keens into super star money makers. It won’t, and the more the embiggen, the more off putting they become.

  6. Amy Bee says:

Even if they didn’t know the rules, their Protection Officers should. Their behaviour shows that they have not been taking the pandemic seriously and they have been poorly advised. I noticed that Sarah Vine (Mrs Michael Gove, MP and member of the British Government) couldn’t help talking about the Sussexes in her piece. If I’m William and Kate, I’m pissed that they can’t have a write up in defense or praise of them without the press reminding the public that Harry and Meghan exist. Even out of the country, Harry and Meghan are overshadowing William and Kate.

    • Britt says:

Sarah Vine is a moron. What does Harry and Meghan living an independent, self sufficient existence is somehow anything remotely compared to royals on the public purse and are supposedly the gold standard 😂 These people aren’t Cambridge supporters. They’re secret Sussex fans who are angry they’ve been dumped but use the Cambridge’s as a replacement.

      • Amy Bee says:

Sarah Vine admitted in one of her previous articles that Harry and Meghan were the stars of the Royal Family. But the press’ smear campaign worked a little too well and instead of Meghan leaving, Harry left with her and now they’re just stuck with the boring and uncharismatic Cambridges.

      • Ginger says:

The British press are so upset Harry left. They wanted Meghan gone but never expected Harry would leave as well. That’s why they are desperate to get him back. He is the only one in that family that was interesting. I will never forget Becky English’s love letter to Harry when he left. These reporters were obsessed with him.

      • JT says:

@ginger I still don’t think the BM wanted Meghan gone. One of the RR admitted that the past 4 years with Meghan were their most profitable. He said they hadn’t seen anything like it since Diana. They wanted Meghan to heel, give them exclusives, and invite them over for tea. Meg leaving left a huge dent in their finances, which is why they were hyping up the trial for nearly a year.

      • Nyro says:

JT, I agree. The royal family wanted her gone but the press sure as heck didn’t. She was bringing in big time $$$. They wanted her to stick around for the storyline. Years of abuse from them, and then a narrative change of a yesr or two reveling in the Markle Sparkle, and then more abuse and sabotage, etc. They were looking forward to at least 15 years of the Meghan soap opera and all the riches it would bring, at least until the Cambridge kids began to come of age. I bet you some of the rota rats were already measuring the drapes, preparing to send their kids to the poshest boarding schools and buying vacation homes, all thanks to the Meghan Abuse economy. I love that she walked away and put an end to all of that. They haven’t broken a Sussex story since they found out about the Tyler Perry house. That was last spring. They’ve got nothing and now it’s hurting their pickets. If that one guy, who’s a very successful royal photographer with decades in the game, is complaining about being broke, then you know the rest of them are seriously struggling as well. I love it. Meghan and Harry and ruthless and brilliant in the protection of their family and public persona.

    • Old ‘No Neck Vine’ is a viper. I put her nastiness on the same scale point as Piss Moron. Considering she’s such a good friend of Rose, I always find her ass kissing of the Cambridge’s interesting.

  7. Becks1 says:

Sarah vine is an idiot. The point isn’t whether people like the regulations. The point is that people – especially the future head of state – follow the regulations. No one likes the restrictions. But smart and sane people recognize that it’s for the greater good.

And for the love of Pete – this wasn’t a “walk on their property.” This was a visit to an attraction that is open to the public. They didn’t just happen to be there at the same time. They appeared to have gone through the attraction together, with minimal social distancing, and no masks.

People defending them come off as so stupid and entitled.

    • Nic919 says:

The deafening silence from the “guidelines” people is pretty hilarious. Where are they?

      • mytwocents says:

Priti Patel was asked about it for a TV segment and she said she hadn’t seen it so therefore couldn’t comment, so the interviewer guy (genius!) showed her his phone and said, oh here it is! LOL she still would not answer if they should be fined or not, so yeah, deafening silence.

  8. Isa says:

Five total kids (George, Charlotte, Louis, Louise, James). Unless you’re counting Will lol.

Also Sarah Vine is so sly and nasty!

  9. ABritGuest says:

“ generally putting themselves and their young family at the disposal of the PRESS” there fixed it for you. Photo ops for the press is the main reason why Cambridges have been praised. And of course Sarah Vine has to compare the futures with the non working Cali royals. As this article pointed out, the Cambridges are just the stick to beat the Sussexes with https://brokenbottleboy.substack.com/p/a-white-royal-christmas-the-daily . Also points out how reluctant the press are to criticise them as they are just human whilst in next turn going on about how they are gearing up to be the future king and queen.

Generally of the working royals only liked Kate’s baby bank initiative, Cambridges bingo call, Kate’s ‘secret’ call with the pensioner, the Wessexes’ especially Sophie’s volunteering, Camilla highlighting DV risk during the pandemic& Camilla’s Christmas tree call the other day and these are the bare minimum. The royals failed to rise to the occasion during the pandemic to me. Not been consistent with mask use, broken rules and have been unimaginative. Seen brilliant ideas here for what they could have done but the bare minimum was what we got

    • L84Tea says:

WOW. That article was scathing and beautiful!!

    • Nyro says:

Great article. Also, I think pro-Sussex folks have got to stop using that manipulative royal jargon, which is what we do by calling the royals who do nothing “working royals” and the royals who actually do work “non-working royals”. As far as I’m concerned, we need to be calling them “taxpayer funded/welfare royals” vs. HM “financially independent royals”. Harry and Meghan work their asses off and here we are calling them “non-working”.

    • Great article. Would love to see this sort of article written by a mainstream British journalist, but there to busy excusing and pandering and tearing down the Sussexes to actually be journalists.

    • MyOpinion says:

@ ABritGuest, that article was magnificent!! Thank you for sharing!! At least one publication is calling it like it is!!

  10. Lizzie says:

Let’s start the call to strip them of their titles for repeatedly breaking pandemic regulations.

  11. Izzy says:

Sarah Vine can whine all she wants about the Sussexes, but so far with their charitable endeavors they’ve committed to more results-oriented action than the Keenbridges have in the whole of their marriage.

Also, I think it is hysterical that my iPad now autofills Keenbridges when I type the first three letters.

  12. Kalana says:

I would like a journalist to look into whether the royals have been vaccinated and is that why they are not taking restrictions seriously even though they could still infect others.

Also where are the Wessexes spending Christmas and who is keeping the Queen company presumably at Windsor?

    • ABritGuest says:

Someone was asking Chris Ship about royals being vaccinated and he said the press wouldn’t be told if they had been. The right wing rota have been anti masks and lockdown etc (like Sarah Vine) so wouldn’t be surprised if the royals‘ covid behaviour was playing to the gallery.

I’m also (vaguely) curious about the Wessexes Christmas plans. Are they still at Sandringham or have they travelled back to Windsor in another breach of the rules? And technically Cambridges & Wessexes travel from KP& Windsor to Sandringham could possibly have been type of non essential travel the rules advise against in the first place.

Britt is right- press are stuck with the Cambridges so have to hype them to the heavens but must grate if they cannot bring dynamism, good tea and if even greater access to the kids doesn’t bring the clicks it used to.

  13. Muffintop says:

One of those essays is fair, balanced and respectful, even as it offers criticism. The other is fawning and spiteful, with a needless barb at the end. Yet they’re treated as equal points of view… FFS, these right wing conservatives give me the shits. It’s exactly the same in US politics — one side argues in good faith, the other in bad faith. I’m done with it. It feels like now is the time for “when they go low, we go… for the jugular, with precision, accuracy and facts”.

    • Kalana says:

There is a strong Fox News approach to supporting the Windsors. From the press and from their stans.

  14. Osty says:

Of course the “perfect ones , the saviours”, the white Tories will get a pass but let’s change the name and pics to the biracial one and her husb6and these same pple will not be forgiven. They will ask for their heads and first born son
The double standards in the media is so glaring a blind person can see it .Also they should stop praising then for the things they did during this pandemic cos from bilson lying about his covid status to their nonsense tour none of it was worthy of praise, it was ridiculous, asinine and a waste of tax papers money and they should be called out for it

  15. Lemons says:

The lengths people will go to defend them are the same lengths they will go to defend their own poor, selfish decisions. These are people with extraordinary means to keep their transgressions private. So if they want to break the rules, go ahead! But do so in private where we don’t have to see you. If you can’t come out and support the measures, at least don’t publicly break them.

I notice that Sarah Vine has nothing to say about royals zooming from their 30 million pound palaces garbling words that have so little substance that we won’t ever recall what was said unless it was a gaffe.

    • Britt says:

Exactly. Why keep bringing up the price of their mansion when you make excuses for royals who live in palaces and use taxes? They don’t realize how dumb they sound. The more they talk, the more you realize that the rota and commenters are full of idiots. If anything people are happy Harry and Meghan are taking care of themselves and left.

  16. Ginger says:

Will and Kate will continue to f-ck up because they know the British press will never hold them accountable. Will and Kate want to be respected as the future king and Queen so they should be held to a higher standard. They messed up and should own it. Simple.

Sarah Vine said Will and Kate are people but has never treated Meghan like a person. She wrote that Meghan was vulgar for guest editing Vogue and countless other articles ripping Meghan for breathing. Sarah Vine is such an awful person.

    • Britt says:

They don’t realize that they’re only damaging Britain’s reputation. These people are insane.

  17. Mignionette says:

Sarah Vine’s career was limping along on life support until Meghan came on the scene. Her children hate her and regularly post shitty things about her on social media so I suppose she has to spill her bile somewhere.

    • Keen Kate says:

Sarah Vine’s/Michael Gove’s daughter dislikes her parents’ right wing views, she said:
“God really made me bis3xual, alt, m3ntally ill, liberal and gave me a tory cabinet minister for a father n said make it work.”

She also regularly talks about her drug dealer and weed smoking (she is under 18, great parenting Vine and Gove!)

      • Sofia says:

I heard their daughter had issues with her parents but I figured it was typical “conservative parents don’t like liberal kid for their views and only their views”

A UK version of Kellyanne and Claudia Conway in a way but there genuinely seems to be real issues within the Conway household

  18. Keen Kate says:

Royals, how are those gold standard advisors working out?

Sarah: [The Cambridges are] “a couple with armies of advisers paid to remind them what to do.”

Jenni: “How can they claim they didn’t know? Royal schedules are rigidly planned. Advisers and, one would assume, police protection officers, are paid to know the rules and advise.”

    • Britt says:

Those advisors are the media themselves 😂 They ain’t fooling nobody. That’s why they’re mad at Harry/Meghan because Kate and Will are towing the line and granting them access.

  19. Naomi says:

This year really shows the Cambridges have no interest in leading, in being leaders. With Covid, it’s so easy to lead: model good, upstanding behavior by wearing a mask, avoid big gatherings and when necessary to do so, then social distance. SO. EASY. It boggles the mind that they flubbed this slam-dunk PR so easily. I mean, *even if* they still thik Covid is a “Joke” (since Will was laughing about it last year) and don’t take it seriously — how easy would it still be to at least *pretend* you take it seriously by wearing a damn mask?! The stupidity (let alone the selfishness) boggles the mind.

    • Keen Kate says:

He was joking about it this March!

    • Wiglet Watcher says:

It’s funny they can’t handle the rules now because before you’d have to bait the Cambridge’s to do anything! Now, things did change. Queen lived another year. Sussex revealed them for what they are. And they need to show everyone they aren’t as bad as they’ve shown themselves to be.

    • Lizzie says:

They are very much trumpers. They love their faces and jump to get in front of a camera but they don’t care/understand that it is not leading. Refuse to admit they have made an error, just keep moving forward to the next photo op.

      • Naomi says:

i totally agree Lizzie — I feel like this year it’s become *very* clear that the Windsors (excluding Sussexes!) are trumpers. They may disdain Trump himself for how crass and “declassé” he is, but bottom line is that they are actively for or at least passively condone (both are bad!) the “me first” mentality. Seems pretty clear that Cambridges especially feel that they’re above everyone else, they’re above public health policies, they are or should be untouchable and not have to participate in public health measures. Disgusting.

      • Lanie says:

I would label them more as Romneys than Trumpers: all the same racist, sexist, classist ideology and entitlement, but with a dogwhistle instead of a bullhorn. Because as much as “moderate” republicans try to pretend, they held all those shitty beliefs long before Trump ran as president. They’re just playing dumb now.

    • Ann says:

Like Biden did during the campaign, and continues to do. Mask up.

  20. equality says:

Vine finds it difficult to let go of the “spare” comparisons. The country can’t be disappointed in William whatever he does because Harry left us and is living in an estate he paid for instead of in public housing? No wonder William thinks he is above rules or apologizing.

    • Nyro says:

As far as royalists are concerned, Harry was born for the sole purpose of serving at the pleasure of William, including being his whipping boy. They’ll never get over his leaving that hell. William could kill a kid in a hit-and-run and the first thing out of these people’s mouths would be “well at least he’s not skipping around an 11 million pound estate, sipping lattes, and droning on about social justice nonsense!!”

      • Christine says:

100%. William has not even tried to conceal that he has always thought Harry was there to serve William, as well. That is the crux of the issue, and I wonder if William and Kate are even aware of it. For sure, Meghan and Harry have figured it out.

      • Nyro says:

        Christine,
The system is so sick that it’s like Harry is not even his own person in their minds. His life belongs to William. If William ever got terminally sick, there’d be nothing but pressure and public shaming for Harry to give up his body to save him. A lung, his bone marrow, a kidney, even his heart.

      • MsIam says:

Isn’t that the way Diana raised them to think? That Harry must always stand by William and be there to support him? I think when Harry met Meghan she opened his eyes to the fact that he was not a puppet like Pinocchio there to do William’s bidding, but that he was indeed a “real boy”. Shame on William for being too selfish to realize the same thing. Although he was raised to think he was the center of the universe, I have to believe he was aware enough to realize how wrong this was. If not, then I feel sorry for Kate and the kids.

      • Tessa says:

Diana also said she wanted them to marry their choices. I doubt her message meant that Harry had to be the perennial third wheel for Will and Kate. She would have identified with Meghan because the RF had also treated her badly.

  21. Prof Trelawney says:

sarah vine — “dying days of 2020” — says it all…

    • Mignionette says:

Knowing Sarah and the click-bait “Morticia Adams’ she is, that reference was deliberate to rile up the lefties on twitter and get her trending.

  22. Nyro says:

Will and Kate are right wing, pro-herd immunity, Trumpian bigots who don’t care about this deadly pandemic because as far as they’re concerned, it’s killing the all right people: the Black, the Asian, and the poor. They are the Trumps. I don’t get why people can’t see what they’re doing, which is signaling to heir Brexitville supporters not to take covid seriously. Will was spouting anti-science, right wing bullcrap with his little covid “joke” back in March. Only a certain type of person says that covid is “exaggerated” or “media hype”. We all know what kind of people say stuff like that about this deadly virus. They’ve shown the world exactly who they are during this pandemic. I find them all to be as disgusting as Donald and Melania. And I feel sorry for those three kids because they are most certainly being taught that they are so special due to their royal white bloodline, that the rules simply do not apply to them. Wanna see the Cambridge kids’ future selves? Look no further than Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric.

    • The Duchess says:

Exactly! Comment of the week 👏🏼

    • Lemons says:

      Agreed 100%

    • Keen Kate says:

I think Kate’s interactions with Asian women/children is one of her few positives. Her favourite food is curry, William said she really wanted to visit India when she first married, she really seemed to enjoy the Pakistan trip and she showcased the clothes well. In Bradford, she seemed to enjoy menhdi/henna and also asked for bindhis to take home for Charlotte.

      • Alexandria says:

I recall she was offered food made from an automatic roti or dosa maker and she declined in front of the press lol. Maybe it was because William fed the machine lol.

      • tolly says:

I’d be surprised if Kate has a single Asian friend, which is a more important measure of racial attitudes. Enjoyment of curry and photo ops does not make her tolerant, it makes her a typical white-lady tourist.

      • Gina says:

It’s in the genes of British. Those British who ruled the world. They liked India, Asia, Eastern countries, they enjoyed exotics. In their very imperial, condescending way. I, for one, don’t think that Kate’s liking of curry somehow proves her positive attitude to people with the darker shades of skin

      • tcbc says:

Consuming the art, food, and aesthetic of another culture in no way indicates respect for its people. Look at the way so many white people adore black art while simultaneously despising black people.

      • Nic919 says:

Kate barely used Pakistani designers in her theme dressing tour and used British ones for most of the trip but designed to mimic Pakistani designs. Frankly she should have been called out for her colonizer approach to that tour because white British designers who specialize in coat dresses shouldn’t go near pakistani culture. It was condescending and imperialistic at its best.

      • Bohemian Angel says:

Most British people love a curry, it means nothing because the same people that eat Indian food would still call the people making said food all sorts of disgusting names.
By the way, Indian curry is now Britain’s most favourite takeaway knocking off the staple British fish and chips.
Also a lot of the English visit India, it reminds them of their wonderful (non existent) British Empire and the great days of colonialism.

      • Nyro says:

Lots of racist white people love POC’s food and style. That means nothing to me.

      • Dee Kay says:

It’s called “eating the other” (great essay by African American cultural writer bell hooks). White people *love* ethnic (i.e., non-white, or “foreign”) things — food, fashion, hairstyles, music, big booties, dance moves, slang, you name it — but they love these things *because* they feel the ethnic enhances their boring, bland selves and lives. NOT because they give a s–t about actual people of color or immigrant/Global South communities or cultures. Tourism without knowledge is just a remnant of colonization. (And hooks does wonder in the essay about how to define “cultural appreciation” as opposed to “cultural appropriation” — she leaves room for ppl who genuinely know, and appreciate, cultures that are not their own — but she is diagnosing this common tendency in white people to consume in an appropriative, not appreciative, way.)

    • Green Desert says:

Co-sign, Nyro. Comment of the week indeed.

    • Nic919 says:

Exactly right. They are both families of rich white entitled assholes who grift for cash and the main difference is that the UK establishment supports the Windsors in their endeavour and don’t have any mechanism to remove them as exists in the US.

  23. S808 says:

I don’t expect RRs to ever criticize W&K tbh. They’re all they have left and they need the royals (especially since they’ve lost all access to the ones that are actually interesting.) as much as the royals need them. I think criticism from the outside press/non RR sources is the best it’s gonna get.

    • Gina says:

I’m not sure. Press needs drama. Sugary articles become boring soon, especially when there’s no content to put into. So, maybe, we’ll get some critical articles. Maybe these two article just test the mood of the readers? Like, to what degree the consumers of DF are ready to some negative publications about W&K?

  24. Belli says:

It’s not just the gathering, it’s the unnecessary travel.

The Wessexes live at Bagshot Park in Surrey and the Cambridges live in in London (yes they have Anmer but the children are at school in London and they were there for the pantomime).

What the heck are they doing in Norfolk??

  25. Jessa says:

Weirdest thing to me is that Sarah Vine’s husband is a very senior UK politician – you know… the people helping shape the rules she’s criticising. Very odd positioning from that perspective.

  26. mtec says:

Can I just say thanks to all the celebitchies and sussexsquad holding it down on Twitter rn when it comes to this foolishness 👏🏽 Cause I just don’t have the energy for these two anymore. They and most of the media that covers them are just so hypocritical and irresponsible, and racist… it’s exhausting.

  27. JT says:

The press should stop the shenanigans. The press don’t need the royals, the royals need them. If the BM needs the RF so badly, and if the RF were so profitable they wouldn’t have to bring up H&M in every article. Talking about the Cambridge’s gives these RR nothing, they barely get any engagement on social media, hardly any clicks, and they for sure aren’t getting invited to American talk shows to talk about them. It’s almost as if they write these fawning articles because nobody is really paying attention anyway. If I were a RR I would give up on the British court and cover H&M and all I would have to do is be fair. Look at Omid: best selling book and working with Netflix. Let the RF work for good coverage for a change.

  28. Rapunzel says:

Meanwhile, my uncle (who has been in and out of hospital and nursing homes all year due to non-covid related health issues died alone in a nursing home Monday. I hadn’t seen him since last February due to Covid. And he cannot have a funeral until mid January because the mortuaries are so backed up due COVID-19.

F–k Will and Kate and their nonsense.

  29. Bibi says:

My god they are clueless. The person who thinks and creates their public outings should be fired, but nobody will be fired because the cambridges must be behind such a fail lol. William thought that the papers would have said the new fab four are out together, after it was suggested somewhere that Eugenie and brooksbank are close to H&M and would be a kind of a new fab four. LOL a fail, again. But they dont set a foot wrong.

  30. Coco says:

This was probably commented on at the time (and AFAIK was never confirmed by Edward), but I can’t get over how strange the claim about where Edward picked his title the Earl of Wessex. The freaking villain of “Shakespeare in Love!” He didn’t say, “Mummy, I admire the novels of Thomas Hardy, please name me Wessex.” He said, “Mummy, Colin Firth plays a sexual predator in this film I watched, please oh please let me share his name!”

    • Keen Kate says:

The County of Wessex ceased to exist about 1000 years ago!

    • It is well known that Andrew and Edward have barely a brain between them. What they do share is an overwhelming sense of royal entitlement and nastiness to the little people. There have been many stories published over the years at just what a prat Edward is. It’s only in the last year or two that he’s been given this vanilla, easy-going press persona.

  31. Larisa says:

I generally have Royal fatigue and stopped reading a lot of stories about either side, but clicked on this one and wow, that last line from Vine! Manipulative af. Way to compare apples (tier-strewn) and oranges ($$$)! I guess because when comparing oranges to oranges, Kate and Will look worse?
It’s not like California is doing super well either. This COVID thing has always come in waves. We watched in horror the first wave in Europe, then they watched in horror as we have overtaken them all in the US, etc.

    • Sparky says:

LA County is now THE hot spot in the US. In CA they divided the state into regions and each region has its own lockdown rules. Santa Barbara and LA are in the same region. Also, the building in Beverly Hills where the Sussexes were spotted this week is mostly medical offices.

What I’m confused about is the comment about raindrops. I can’t remember the last time it rained here.

  32. Abena Asantewaa says:

The hypocrisy of Sara Vine, and her hatred for Meghan especially, couldn’t prevent her from bringing up H&M’s non taxpayer mansion, as oppose to W&K’s stately homes paid for by the tacpayers, not forgetting Bagshot Park home of the Wessexes. Is the covid only in Britain, didn’t The Sussexes leave Britain before the covid happened, and why is it called a pandemic, Sara Vine talks as if W&K are sacrificing for the covid, while’s H&M enjoy life in California free from covid, she is so dishonest, racist and bias. Every effort of H&M in this pandemic is ridiculed, it really annoys me.

    • kelleybelle says:

Me too. You are so right. But consider the source. Vine is only an RR sycophant, nothing more. She’s not a real journalist. Meghan and Harry had nothing to do with the disastrous choo-choo stunt or this walk. They cannot talk about Bill ‘n Buttons without mentioning the Sussexes, and that is just pathetic.

  33. Jay says:

The first article gives as examples of why we should credit the Cambridges that they are “Upbeat, ever-present, generally putting themselves and their young family at the disposal of the public, reporting for morale-lifting duties whenever the occasion demanded it.”

So…they are all we have, and they are willing to appear, with the children, to do their only job… mostly. “Upbeat” seems a bit of a stretch. It’s pretty telling, honestly, that there are no examples of any of these supposed qualities.

I’d almost read this as subtle criticism, like Kate and William had better put themselves in the public eye more than “generally” if they want to keep the press happy. Am I reading too much into it?

  34. Kate says:

It’s funny how some people will defend them, no matter what they do/don’t do.

  35. Gail says:

If Sarah fugly ass vine can’t write her bs without mentioning H and M, then she needs to retire from playing journalist.

  36. L4frimaire says:

It’s really pathetic how Vine has to throw the Sussexes in to justify the Cambridge’s indifference toward this virus. They blatantly flouted rules everyone else is subjected to. So much for protocols. Being so insulated up the royals ass, in case she missed it, the rest of the world are also under Covid restrictions and California is one of the hardest hit states, especially Southern California. At least the Sussexes are wearing masks consistently, unlike this crew. No way this was just a casual run-in, especially since the Wessexes don’t live near that area. The royals do not think the rules apply to them, do not think this virus is that big a deal or that they’re immune now that they’ve been infected and that they are above it all. The country is a mess virulent strains, flight bans and blocked ports, but mansions in Montecito are the real problem? GTFOH.

  37. Detnow359 says:

This wasn’t an accidental meet up. Tickets were arranged in advance. I believe this was another attempt to showcase the new RF group that was shared at the end of the train tour. There’s no way their offices didn’t know the others would be there. And how convenient that it was all captured on camera. Yawn 🥱

  38. Jumpingthesnark says:

I Wouldnt be surprised if BoJo was encouraging the BRF Covid rule flouting. Then, he can throw them under the bus (like he did for the choo choo tour)to distract from all the hard Brexit mess. You’d think the BRF (or at least their advisers) would be savvy enough to avoid the BRF getting pulled into that position.

  39. Watson says:

The Cambridge’s are out there acting like fools, and Meg’ and Harry are slamming the press with more positive PR like their SUPER CUTE Christmas card. My stomach hurts from laughing!!!

  40. FruitBowlnBerries says:

I’m reading “…And What Do You Do” by Norman Baker and I would put good money on the proposition that the British Monarchy will severely limited in its privileges once Charles is on the throne, and this will eventually set the scene for extinction of the royal family like in other European countries. The Queen’s high approval is thanks to the older generations and the cultural “residue” from earlier decades. It is shocking how much they get away with, esp for financial privileges, lack of informational disclosure, and access to privileged/protected information.

  41. blunt talker says:

When the one year review comes up-whatever is decided about the Sussex family-let’s hope the media in England can focus on the brexit problems and covid-19 problems-those problems really affect all of England-where Meghan and Harry are living. how much their house cost. their working deals.etc will not affect the Brits lives one bit-/this makes them look stupid because their media writes an article that absolutely has nothing to do with Meghan and Harry but their names get mentioned-if they are so happy with the remaining Windsor clan why not discuss their working deals and charities without mentioning the Sussex family- people are getting wise to the constant talking about the Sussexes when they no longer live in England-on topics that has nothing to do with them-PS a 11 million dollar house compared to a palace is no contest-living on the taxpayers-they think this is good or honorable-they keep showing their shitstains on every thing-they need some medicine to stop pooping on themselves and sounding like cave people.

  42. rawiya says:

They just randomly met up? These two families have had nothing to do with each other until mid-2020 when it became clear that H&M weren’t going to come crawling back. Had it been the Cambridges and Mike/Zara, yeah, that would make sense to me. But they are definitely trying to push the Cambridge/Wessex Future of BRF narrative and it FAILED because they’re idiots.
