What was the best New Year’s Eve celebration for the end of dumpster fire 2020?

I was in bed, fast asleep for hours before midnight, although I did wake up at midnight because my neighbors did fireworks and music (and it was fine). So this is my New Year’s Day tradition: going through social media in the morning to see what happened on all of the NYE shows. There were some good moments, apparently, as various NYE hosts got absolutely hammered and few people came out to celebrate in the streets. That’s a good thing! I’m glad so many people celebrated at home and just watched TV. So here are some fun NYE moments:

Jennifer Lopez performing on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Her Super Bowl performance was so much better. The audio quality is just… bad. And then she tried to cover Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”

At the 7:30 mark of that video, you can see J.Lo try to slide and she practically knocks over a camera. Which led to this edit (the sound effect is not real):

There was Anderson Cooper & Andy Cohen drunkenly interviewing a clearly baked Snoop Dogg, and Snoop was cracking up at Coop’s laugh.

Anderson and Andy also tried to interview Mariah Carey and it was a mess. Mariah’s home set-up was worth it though.

Seattle decided to forgo fireworks for this NYE, and they did a “virtual light display” at the Space Needle which ended up being one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen? I’m a nerd, so I’d love to know the time and effort it took to make this.

Happy New Year. Thank you for covering Seattle, can’t wait to show my sons. Andy Cohn – I do not like him at all. I don’t know what it is about him or how he rose to fame. And Anderson Cooper is way better than Andy on so many levels. That’s all. Sorry to start 2021 on a sour note, I just get a bad vibe from Andy. And what the heck is that on JLo’s face????

Was she trying for “Hanibelle” Lector??? Weird! Girl may be talented, but man, oh, man, she is SO affected/try-hard/thirsty.

I totally agree with you about Andy Cohen; he’s like the kid who puts two cats in a box to watch them fight/scratch it out (which, I guess, IS what he does with his Real Housewives crap lol).

Seattle’s Space Needle show was AMAZING. It looked like the Aurora Borealis at the beginning! (Something on my Bucket List to see in person).

    • lolalola3 says:

There is something really mean-girls about Andy. He revels in cruelty, enjoys laughing at others and seems like an all around dumb, entitled person. Icky, icky, icky.
That said, Anderson *sign*…that man. Brains and beauty and his laugh is adorable.

I love Anderson Cooper and really admire him as a journalist. His reports from post-Katrina New Orleans and post-earthquake Haiti were incredible. I have to say that I do NOT understand his friendship with Andy Cohen, who is what my mother would have a called a ‘vulgarian’. The thing that really makes me scratch my head is that it’s obvious that Cohen is REALLY jealous of Anderson. Cohen might have made millions selling trash tv but Anderson Cooper is a VANDERBILT. Every time I’ve seen them together, Cohen makes some snide remark about Anderson’s Vanderbilt connection. This year it was a dig about the estate. I don’t understand why Anderson doesn’t see how Cohen is using him to get access to areas of NY society that the ‘Countess’ would never be allowed in, even through the servant’s entrance. Maybe Anderson thinks that if he hangs out with someone like Andy it proves he’s not a ‘snob’. I shudder to think of poor baby Wyatt growing up with Cohen in his life.

The irony is that last night there was a segment with Andy’s parents and they seem like nice people. Go figure.

        Absolutely

      • clomo says:

I agree with all of this.

      • Arnie says:

Lola you are 100% right. I’m a big Bravo fan and he is totally mean. He’s strikes me as one of those people who always wanted to be in the bro club and will say anything to seem cool.
On many reunions that include men and women (like below deck) he’s just so misogynistic.

      • tealily says:

Totally agree about Cohen. I hate him in any other context, but for whatever reason (Anderson Cooper), I really enjoy his New Year’s broadcast with Anderson Cooper every year.

    • Cheryl says:

I agree about Andy Cohen. Something about him just feels malignant. Like he’s some venomous viper. He sets off my heebie-jeebie senses anyways.

We watched the live stream of the fireworks in Reykjavik. They’re lit by residents and it’s about 15 minutes of random, beautiful chaos. Felt right.

    • kerwood says:

I spent New Year’s in Amsterdam once and at midnight EVERYONE set off fireworks. It was like WWIII! It took hours for the smoke to clear.

      • Meg says:

I lived in hawaii when i was 24 and the next day i remember walking by a home with so much firework debris on the driveway not a single sliver of cement was visible theyd set off so many. I did not experience that growing up in the midwest so i wondered if it was a cultural difference

I fell asleep last night because it just felt like 2020 was never going to come to an end but then I was woken up by fireworks outside. Then sirens.

I think I cursed at 2020 one more time then fell asleep again. Heh.

  6. Sidewithkids says:

Happy New Year. Blessings To All.

  7. Dazed and Confused says:

I watched “Death to 2020” on Netflix and it was the perfect end to 2020. It was darkly funny and uncomfortably on point.

Happy New Year to you all!!

    • Seraphina says:

I watched it a few days ago and then again last night with the family. It was well done – especially when the credits were rolling at the very end – which I missed the first time.

    • Jaded says:

Gonna watch it today with a glass or 2 of champagne.

Having seen out the final hours of 2020 in bed with a migraine having taken a couple of co-codamol I crawled downstairs for midnight to find my boyfriend watching Tatoo Fixers (if you have that/your own version in the US I highly recommend it) so we saw in the new year with that on and trying to calm the cat down as the fireworks were going off all evening and he was freaking out. A fitting end to 2020!

Today I’m starting to catch up on the fun stuff and I’m hoping the Reykjavik fireworks mentioned above is online somewhere.

    Happy New Year CB community!!

  9. FHMom says:

Both JLo and Cyndi Lauper sucked so hard, which was a fitting end to this horrible year.
Miley did a great job on Edge of 17

  10. Elfie says:

I thought they were all horrible. I kept flipping back and forth but the musical acts that I saw were wretched. I ended up just falling asleep with the Twilight Zone marathon again.

  11. Marigold says:

I like Andy. I thought J Lo tried hard, but that it sounded pretty bad. The Mariah interview was pretty interesting. I want to read her book.

We spent the evening watching movies. At midnight, I zoomed with my oldest daughter. New Years always makes me sad. I hate January. Nothing exciting happens and I’m broke AF.

    • Truthiness says:

I like Andy’s good parts and will leave the Housewives/reality show/mean girl side in the dumpster, forever. He is the type to have Gloria Steinem on his show, treat her with respect, like the legend that she is, and give her the floor to explain why the Housewives is the wrong type of show, glorifying the absolute worst of women and that he not argue the point at all. He’s had good interviews with people like Oprah and Hillary Clinton. I would never had known tidbits like Anna Wintour dressing Hillary during her 2016 presidential campaign otherwise.

Anderson is a far greater and deeper talent but he benefits from Andy dragging him along to normal pursuits like vacationing for the hell of it. He never thought he would be a dad but when he saw Cohen do it, it opened a door. Plus Cohen gave Anderson his fantastic nanny, that says a lot.

      • Southern Fried says:

I can’t stomach him long enough to watch any good interviews he might do. I began watching WWHL at the beginning and became disgusted by his sexual harassment of young male bartenders and his disrespectful attitude towards women. He and Anderson being friends and touring together has lowered my opinion of Anderson. There are lots of good reporters so it’s easy to click past Cooper.

  12. shanaynay says:

I agree. I thought they both was awful.

Thought is was pretty damn funny when Bieber couldn’t remember the words to his own songs. He’s so pathetic!

  13. L4frimaire says:

Everything on tv seemed lame, boring, and depressing, but finally switched to PBS and watched a wonderful concert from Mount Vernon, with performances by Audra McDonald, Josh Groban, YoYo Ma, Jaunes, Renee Fleming, so many great performances w/commentary by Anna Deveare Smith. Was just what I needed. Great music and just suited my mood. Even my 12yo got into it. Great way to ring in the New Year.

    • kerwood says:

I spent my evening watching Andy and Anderson and then thought I’d check out what was happening on PBS. I made it just in time for Patti LaBelle. When I saw the lineup during the credits, I almost wept. All that time wasted while THIS was on.

  14. oopygoopy says:

I would be willing to bet based on how hes acting and personal experience that Cohen is on molly or something very similar.

  15. Julia K says:

No longer an Anderson Cooper fan after listening to him sneer at a lottery winner who had lost his job, apartment etc. The man said the first thing he would do is buy a car. If I recall correctly( I was so angry) Anderson implied that a car is the last thing he should be buying. No! That man needed wheels to go apply for a job, to buy clothes and food, to hunt for a new place to live. The lack of transportation promotes unemployment and no access to education, health care and so much more. Only someone who has never had survival issues would be so insensitive. This was a long time ago, and the wording has escaped me, but the intent has stayed with me.

  16. heygingersnaps says:

Happy new year! I thought that London scrapped their fireworks display so we tuned in to Jool’s Hootenanny and then had a look at BBC One to find out that Alicia Keys was performing and London still had fireworks and drone display so we catch up on that after watching the local fireworks display around us. Here’s to a better year.

  17. Orangegirl says:

My question is…why would JLo even do this…even if her performance was perfect there are still going to be the haters out there. She has proved herself. We love her. She needs to chill and enjoy herself instead of trying to be the Hottest,Sexyist, whatever-ist. That must be exhausting for her.

    • deering24 says:

Because someone is always competing for the Hottest/Sexiest crown and she can’t rest on her laurels. Well, that’s what her insecurities tell her. Too much is never, ever enough for celebrities.

  18. Faye G says:

I can’t believe I missed the Seattle virtual show! I’m from Seattle, but got too caught up watching K-pop shows for NYE and missed all of these. The Snoop Dogg segment was way too funny, I needed a good laugh to start off 2021!

  19. Malificent says:

We’re in Denver, so we turned on CNN at about 11:45 Mountain Time. But the countdown clock in the screen was set to Pacific Time. Apparently only the coasts get to celebrate the new year on CNN. So we left Anderson and switched to a local channel to count down in our time zone.

  20. Meredith says:

I loved that Seattle was responsible and didn’t do anything live at the space needle. BUT, we stayed up until midnight to watch it and we turned it off pretty quickly. I felt like I needed to be on shrooms to enjoy it.

    • Nic says:

Yea we weren’t impressed by it either. We were also confused as to why they didn’t use artists from Seattle to create the show.

  21. ME says:

I mean I Iove Jennifer Lopez but that NYE performance was horrible. She really shouldn’t have done it. I normally enjoy Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin Eve, but it was so boring this year. I ended up watching CNN mostly. I know it was hard this year but Dick Clark’s New Year’s show was just one big commercial for Planet Fitness. It was tacky.

  22. Mandy says:

JLO…I’m sorry girlfriend, just no. I respect she works hard, but like the movie she starred in, ENOUGH! All I see when I watch her is a tremendous ego and a narcissistic personality that craves attention on every platform. It’s always me, me, me, she has to have her finger in every pie, 24/7 365! Now she’s hawking a new skin care line? Her over the top conspicuous consumption of wealth and greed is just tone deaf in these have and have not painful times in this country and across the World. People are starving and losing their homes, get off your six foot high pedestal. Cringe.

    • Sorella says:

Well her IG account is thousands of comments worshipping her obsessively. Her ego is enormous and they feed into yet, I know nobody who is a giant JLO fan yet I read the comments on there and can’t believe she has so many crazy fans, are these bought comments from her team or is everyone a JLO fanatic except me?!! Yes she’s in phenomenal shape but her sexy mouth poses, her extraness, her love of herself is too much. I want a JLO scandal to take her down a peg a la Hilaria lol

  23. Caitrin says:

What, no love for Big Freedia?

  24. Valerie says:

I love Cyndi Lauper, but she needs to find another song, It sounds like it was written and recorded in 10 minutes, and she’s a much better singer and songwriter than that. She’s always said that she was never much of a businesswoman, and it shows in choices like this.

I feel bad because Twitter has been merciless, and she had to disable comments on her Instagram posts because people were telling her how terrible she was. Perfectionist that she is, she was probably aware, lol.

  25. paranormalgirl says:

JLo looked like a crocheted toilet paper holder when she first appeared.
