Ginni Thomas apologizes to her husband’s staffers for supporting a violent coup

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is a jackass, and he’s married to a wingnut terrorist. His wife is Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, a hard-right Republican. She actively supported Donald Trump and every part of his agenda, including the “let’s overthrow democracy and install Trump as a despotic king” agenda. She supported and likely helped to organize “Stop the Steal” rally, which led to the terrorist attack on the Capitol on January 6th, although it’s now believed that she did NOT finance the transport of armed white supremacist terrorists into DC. Now Ginni Thomas is “apologizing.” But not to us. Not to the congressmen and congresswomen who worried that the terrorists – whom Ginni Thomas supported morally – would kill them. Not to the Capitol Police officer who was murdered by terrorists. Not to the families of the police officers who died by suicide following the siege. No, Ginni Thomas apologized to her husband’s clerks. I can’t with this bitch.

Conservative political activist Virginia Thomas told her husband Justice Clarence Thomas’s former law clerks that she was sorry for a rift that developed among them after her election advocacy of President Donald Trump and endorsement of the Jan. 6 rally in D.C. that resulted in violence and death at the Capitol.

“I owe you all an apology. I have likely imposed on you my lifetime passions,” Thomas, who goes by Ginni, recently wrote to a private Thomas Clerk World email list of her husband’s staff over his three decades on the bench. “My passions and beliefs are likely shared with the bulk of you, but certainly not all. And sometimes the smallest matters can divide loved ones for too long. Let’s pledge to not let politics divide THIS family, and learn to speak more gently and knowingly across the divide.”

A sampling of posts made to the group were shared with The Washington Post by a member upset with some of the pro-Trump messages written by Ginni Thomas and others in the lead-up and aftermath of the election. Thomas did not respond to requests for comment. Several former clerks, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the listserv is private, verified the dispute in what is normally an affable setting meant to celebrate achievements of the clerk “family.”

Besides the friction there, Thomas has drawn outrage among liberals for public political commentary on her “Ginni Thomas” Facebook page. Her comments there celebrated Trump’s supporters who assembled in D.C. on Jan. 6, hundreds of whom stormed the Capitol, resulting in the deaths of five people. In the early morning post, Thomas encouraged her Facebook followers to watch the day’s events unfold on conservative news media, writing, “LOVE MAGA people!!!!” She added in another: “GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU STANDING UP or PRAYING.”

[From The Washington Post]

“Thomas has drawn outrage among liberals…” The way her extremism, her terrorism-adjacency, her support of a violent coup is being normalized as “yet another thing that nitpicky liberals are mad about!” Hopefully the overwhelming majority of Americans want all of these a–holes to go to prison. Even if you argue that Ginni Thomas maybe didn’t specifically support the violent overthrow of the government, she 100% supported THE OVERTHROW OF THE GOVERNMENT. Those terrorist a–holes at the Stop the Steal rally weren’t just humble conservatives with a different point of view. They believed that the election results should be thrown out and that Trump should be installed as Dear Leader for Life. They weren’t in DC for a g–damn picnic and Ginni Thomas knew that and she was cheering them on. Arrest her. And the fact that she’s only f–king apologizing to her husband’s staff, my God.

Balance the court. Kill the filibuster. Make DC and PR states. Pass real legislation that will show voters what good government can do to make their lives better. And do it now. Before 2022. Or loose. That is the choice before the Democrats. They will choose loose, like they always do.

Every one of our “territories” not just DC and PR deserves full sovereignty as a basic human right. Guam, “American” Samoa, the “US” Virgin Islands, and the many other lands occupied by the US military around the world have their own indigenous existence and rights far beyond being an airstrip or bombing range. It’s really perturbing that DC and PR have become politically palatable for progressives while the indigenous peoples of other oppressed territories are once again completely ignored and marginalized in “progressive” circles.

      • Aang says:

NPR just did an in depth story about American Samoa. The majority don’t want statehood. It is an interesting listen. I don’t know how Guam feels. Each territory should be able to decide for themselves. And btw I am indigenous. Born and spent childhood on a reservation. I’m all for bringing them all in, if they want.

    • Snappyfish says:

NO. Absolutely NOT. a sitting justice on the SCOTUS’s wife was involved in a seditious insurrection on the Nations Capitol. He MUST resign. There is no “I’m sorry” here. She should be charged with a crime. It was always an affront that Thomas, a horrible sexual harassing poor excuse for a human sat in the Historic seat of Thurgood Marshall.

      • AMA1977 says:

He will not, and it will be another case of having to rely on horrible people to agree to do the right thing. Norms and conventions only work on people with morals, and you can’t shame the shameless.

  2. sa says:

Her self-aggrandizing in her apology “My passions and beliefs are likely shared with the bulk of you”… why did she think that belonged in the apology? Even if it’s true (I’d *like* to think that it’s not, but who knows), it had no place in an apology and seems to be there just to shift the blame to those who don’t agree with her, basically negating the apology.

    • Mac says:

And let’s not let a little thing like insurrection come between friends. 🙄

    • Lexilla says:

Except for her use of the word “apology,” I saw no indication that this is an actual apology.

      • MyOpinion says:

Exactly!! The apology was not sincere and the fact that she verbally spread her conspiracies to his current and former staff are inexcusable. Thomas must resign immediately and Greene must go out with him!! You can’t have any nut jobs in any high political positions as they will have the power to manipulate their actions to support their crazy conspiracies.

  3. LightPurple says:

Court clerks are NOT your “family,” Ginni. They’re your husband’s staff, a distinction your husband had difficulties with when he was at the EEOC and sexually harassed a staff member.

And your apologies are owed to the families of Officer Sicknick, to the other injured officers and their families, to members of Congress and THEIR staffs, and the American people.

Justice Thomas needs to retire immediately.

    • Mac says:

No matter how despicable Thomas may be, Ginni is 100% accountable for her own actions. We don’t expect women to quit their jobs when their husbands are a-holes.

      • BnLurkN4eva says:

Oh, I think this is different because of the role he play in our politics and how her actions compromise his position. Unless they are claiming to be living separate lives, he has to know about her views, (she wasn’t subtle) and therefore he is complicit.

      • whatWHAT? says:

if the woman was a SC justice and her husband encouraged and cheered on a violent insurrection and attempt to overthrow a legitimately elected government?

you BET people would be calling for her resignation…and her arrest…and her imprisonment…

and it’s not like he works a retail job or pumps gas. his “job” is not the norm. he makes decisions that affect every citizen in this country and if there’s ANY indication he supports or supported this attempted coup, he should resign. if there’s even a semblance of support, he should resign.

      • Mac says:

And if it was a woman we would all be yelling about how she is not responsible for her husband’s actions. You can’t have justice and equity if the standards are not the same for everyone, even when it is sucks.

      • BnLurkN4eva says:

@Mac, I think you are deliberately missing the difference to make your point, which is disingenuous. These circumstances are different and if the sex were reverse, SHE would likely already be forced to resign once HIS involvement became known. You do recognize that just because some women (feminist like myself) cry to not blame women for their husband’s action, that society does anyway – always – still. She has compromised herself and because of his position, he is compromised and should be forced to resign. If the roles were reversed this would likely already have traction as it should and should in the present case.

      • Nic919 says:

If Ginni Thomas has financed the insurrectionists, then Thomas himself needs to refuse himself from any case relating to that, at minimum. She has a material interest in the case by her own actions and the judicial ethical codes require him to do this.

Her repulsive political opinions alone may not be enough for him to step down, but she has gone far beyond that and her role is one of being directly involved , allegedly.

        Gender doesn’t matter here.

      • whatWHAT? says:

no. in situations like the Armie Hammer situation, where the gross person is just an entertainer, and his wife is not at fault and may not have known etc., your stance is absolutely true. the spouse is not responsible for the other spouses actions, and no one would be calling for her resignation or shunning.

but this is different. the “gross” person encouraged and cheered on treason, and her husband makes decisions that affect the entire citizenship of this country.

the wife of the guy who stole and was carrying Pelosi’s Speaker Stand faced the same issue.

        apples and oranges.

      • MsIam says:

@Mac, Judge Thomas knew for months about her involvement with Stop the Steal yet did not recuse himself when that Texas case came before the SC. Although he and Alito said in their dissent that they would grant no relief even if they heard the case, it is still troubling that he never addressed what his wife was doing. The Supreme Court is supposed to be above reproach as the court of last resort, but we see its been turned into just another joke. And from what I’ve read about his wife she wasn’t just staying home and praying. She was part of a group that supposedly was trying to root out people in government who were disloyal or leaking info about the Trump admin.

    • Pusspants says:

@Lightpurple: All great points. And perhaps I’m misunderstanding the purpose of that listserve, but why is she on it in the first place? If it’s a listserve for professionals that have worked with Thomas, why would she even need to post on it? She seems to have inserted herself into his professional life and he’s allowed that, which is quite problematic. I get what Mac is saying about not holding a spouse accountable for a partner’s actions and agree with that sentiment. But in this scenario, Ginny inserts herself into his professional life and I get the feeling he allows her to speak for both of them. He’s not innocent here.

And I will never forgive her for terrorizing Anita Hill!

      • Nic919 says:

She shouldn’t be posting on a list serve with his former law clerks. They aren’t a family and pretending they are is old boys club nonsense. The clerks had a relationship with Thomas, who was their employer. Once again Ginni is crossing all ethical lines because no one ever stops her.

      • AMA1977 says:

For the same reasons that Mother Pence and MIke Pompeo’s Deplorable wife (I think her name is Susan, but I can’t be bothered to look it up) are all up in the mix with their husbands’ business affairs. These women crave power but don’t want to go about commanding it in ways that require any effort (a la Madam Vice President Harris and Madam Speaker Pelosi, who worked their A$$ES OFF to get where they are) so they leach off of their husband’s careers and insert themselves in spaces where they have not earned the right to be. It’s gross, anti-feminist, and should not be permitted.

  4. Stacy Dresden says:

    Isn’t she adorable?

  5. Liz version 700 says:

Aside from being a supporter of the insurrection and a terrible person in general, the bat bleep crazy runs deep in this lady.

    • Mac says:

People who supported and participated in the insurrection don’t seem to get how enraged the rest of us are.

      • Liz version 700 says:

Right?!?!?!?! They seem to think it was just a tiny kerfuffle we should get over!

      • Insomniac says:

I’ve seen a number of them on Twitter trying to pretend it wasn’t that bad or violent. The whole country was watching-we *know* how bad it was! They can’t gaslight their way out of this one, but some of ’em are going to try it anyhow.

      • BnLurkN4eva says:

They refuse to understand that to sane Americans the actions of those who stormed the capital are no different than the actions of foreign terrorist who attempted to destroy us on 9/11, or who bomb embassies. Her support for them is that of those people celebrating in the streets of wherever the terrorist is from while burning the flag. They are acting like what was planned and carried out on 1/6 was just a little protest like the many protest held every year in the capital. NO.

      • sa says:

@Mac, I’m honestly more enraged by those who were not part of it, but aren’t enraged. A few thousand violent crazies I can accept. It sucks, but there are always going to be violent nutjobs. But the millions who are are comfortable brushing it off and “moving on” and/or don’t care if there are consequences for the insurrectionists, those are the people who really get my rage.

      • MyOpinion says:

Supporting your comments, I would like to add that those who participated and supported the insurrection have, in my opinion, shat on the grief on the officers who where killed and assaulted that day. In addition to the suffering that the officers experienced that unfortunately committed suicide. The events of the insurrection not only brought forth horrendous atrocities, it also caused immeasurable pain and suffering from those at the Capitol and those of us who respect the democracy in a sage and fair election. To add insult to injury, we still had members of Congress that supported their cause to by trying to reverse the results while standing on the floor of the Capitol hours after the vicious attack. I am furious that there are so many people that actually believe in these conspiracies for not only their own delusions but those who wish to gain support from Agent Orange voters! Members of Congress and the House should all resign, in addition to Thomas, for supporting terrorists.

  6. She and her husband have always been, and continue to be, awful people.

  7. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

    Cult of lies. Vomitus mass.

  8. Insomniac says:

This is the same lovely lady who called Anita Hill up to ask when Hill was planning to apologize to her husband and explain herself to them, right? No surprise that she’s still a terrible excuse for a human being.

  9. smegmoria says:

Maybe she could drunk dial an apology to America.

  10. Likeyoucare says:

Why do these despicable people have an unfortunate face?

  11. Mumbles says:

The Times reported sometime in the past year that Thomas was collecting names of people in the administration not committed to her extreme right wing views and submitted them for Trump for firing. Per the report even Trump thought she was a little crazy (at the time). This woman is unhinged and dangerous.

  12. SarahCS says:

Tinfoil hat time, could this be the result of some sort of workplace grievance procedure? I don’t know if that’s even possible given that if I have understood correctly not all of this group currently work for him. Just a thought as it might explain some of her language (most of you are on board but there are some bad apples and that’s why I’m being forced to say this).

  13. L4frimaire says:

Ginni Thomas is a truly horrible person. Apologizing to the clerks is the absolute least she could do. The fact that the wife of a Supreme Court Justice was involved in any way in this big election lie , as well as her role with the Trump administration is a huge red flag. According to the Hill magazine, after Trumps first impeachment trial (first!), “Allies of President Trump have reportedly been assembling lists of government officials deemed to be disloyal to the president and have worked to find pro-Trump replacements for them.” Ginni Thomas was one of those people involved. Also, about 10 years ago, she called Anita Hill out of the blue, saying she knows what she did and that she needs to apologize to her husband. The FBI investigated the call and it made her look like a stalker. A toxic vindictive couple who use their influence and position to dictate to the American people.

  14. ican'tanymore says:

I feel like she’s in steep competition with Ivanka to be the visual cue under the word “Complicit” in the dictionary. I used to feel *somewhat* bad for her during the run-up to his Supreme Court confirmation, but not now. I hoped she really didn’t know the extent of his abuse and was a shocked, hurt, spouse….but I don’t see any room for that to be true now. File this under the “I’m sorry if you’re hurt” insincere apology category.

  15. Julia K says:

My blood boils when I think back to what they and others did to Anita Hill.

  16. Lissdogmom02 says:

This lady is a complete bitch, full stop. Her husband needs to lose his job. I’m so over the liberals are snowflakes bs. The other side is crying like crazy because they can’t get their way & we are the liberals who whine about everything, 👀 whatever with that noise. I’m done with being nice to the gop, we need to pass our agenda just like they did whether they like it or not, also just like they did. Our agenda however is for the people’s greater good, theirs is for the 1%.
