Prince Harry & Meghan dropped by a Get Lit virtual class & of course they studied

The Duchess of Sussex has been seen! In a very tiny square in a Zoom poetry class, alongside Prince Harry. Harry and Meghan zoom’d into a Get Lit virtual poetry class in a way to honor Black History Month. Get Lit is a nonprofit organization which was founded in 2006, and has grown to 100 classrooms across California. Get Lit has been doing virtual poetry and literature events around Black History Month, and it was apparently a big surprise to the students on the Zoom call that Meghan and Harry dropped in. Here’s what went down:

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are talking poetry! The couple made a surprise appearance in honor of Black History Month on Saturday, joining a virtual poetry class with Get Lit, an organization that promotes literacy and empowers young people through poetry.

“Guess who surprised our poetry class this weekend?! It was the best weekend EVER!” the organization captioned a screenshot of the duo joining their Zoom call — with some shocked reactions from other participants. “Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were magic and kind and interested in poetry!”

Get Lit said that Meghan shared some of her favorite lines of poems and dubbed the it “most epic experience in Get Lit history!!!”

Teacher Mason Granger shared on Instagram why Meghan, 39, and Prince Harry, 36, joined the class. “The root of them deciding to come is because at some point in their lives, they were moved by a poem,” he said. “And whoever wrote that poem at some point thought to themselves, ‘Does this even matter? Is anyone even listening?’ And they shared it anyway. Fast forward ripple ripple ripple and these kids get a surprise 45 minute chat with the Prince Harry and Meghan. It was pretty surreal.”

Granger said that the kids were able to share poems and ask Meghan and Harry questions. He even commented that the couple took the time to “actually read and learned the kids bios I’d sent earlier.” In a video shared on Get Lit’s Instagram story, one student asked Meghan and Harry why they were interested in the organization and poetry in general. “It was recommended to us,” Harry answered. “We really just wanted to see you guys, meet you guys and see how this was working through Zoom.”

Meghan added, “It’s so interesting as we watch our world go through this alchemy process, right. Everything is being churned and turned, and hopefully what comes out is something solid.”

[From People]

Mason Granger remarking that Harry and Meghan took the time to read the student bios is *chef’s kiss*. Of course they took the time. Meghan, especially, loves to be prepared. I bet she was ready to make flashcards so that she and Harry would remember the students. (Meanwhile, Harry’s brother doesn’t even bother reading his briefing papers while traveling abroad.) Anyway, Get Lit is a great program and not to get too Michelle Pfeiffer-in-Dangerous-Minds, but it’s amazing to expose young students to advanced literature and poetry, especially the modern stuff.

Of course they read their bios! So on-brand. I bet you’re right–Meghan probably made her and Harry flashcards too. This is a great story.

  2. Brit says:

They look so happy and the kids reaction was everything. I just hope they closed their DM’s because the British Media are going to be harassing them for that video and interviews.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

Sadly the charity did get trolled. Hopefully the kids didn’t. This is the sort of reaction you can’t manufacture or fake. Authenticity speaks to authenticity.

    • Myra says:

They do. Look at Harry. Probably can’t believe his luck. I’m holding out hope that one day Meghan pops up during one of my boring zoom meetings.

  3. Merricat says:

I love this so much. Poetry is important; words matter. They don’t do anything halfway, these Sussexes.

    • Hellohello says:

I’m vaguely related to the woman who founded Get Lit (she’s my cousins’ half sister…). It’s such a great organization and I’m so happy it’s taken off!

    • sunny says:

Art is so important, especially during challenging times. Poetry gets a bad wrap for being inaccessible because kids are often not exposed or exposed by people who have no love of the form. Love this story!

Really love that Meghan is always so prepared. A woman after my own heart.

      • Lady D says:

I will forever be grateful to my grade ten creative writing teacher, Mr. Marples. He is responsible for my love of literature, poetry and reading. I wish I could have thanked him as an adult for what he did for me.

  4. Roserose says:

    This is awesome.

I wonder which poems M and H referred to on the call?

  5. Ginger says:

Love this! Of course they were prepared. Meghan is always prepared and Harry was often described as being prepared on royal engagements and reading his briefing notes. This is what happens when you care about what you do. They were interested and engaged and not just doing this for PR. Notice how there wasn’t a personal photographer there to take their picture Zooming?

Also, they both looking amazing and so happy!

    • JT says:

And they didn’t just repeat the same talking point over and over. They had examples that actually related to what was being discussed. Harry and Meghan also look like they don’t hate each other. Will and Kate’s last zoom together was painful to watch. It’s funny how the Keens never want to emulate H&M’s preparedness or anything concrete. They just try to copy the superficial things.

  6. Nev says:

    WERK Duchess.

  7. Becks1 says:

This is so wonderful – you could see in the students’ faces and tweets how much this meant to them. And OF COURSE they read the bios, I dont think any of us is surprised at that, but I did cackle that the teacher made a point of mentioning it. Being prepared and ready for these meetings is part of their brand.

Let’s all take note that they are back in front of the fireplace for the zoom – my guess is it that it looks like they can get closer to the camera there than in their other room? – but point being, lets see if someone else’s zoom room changes…..

    • L84Tea says:

I want them to change location every time they zoom, just to keep the do-nothings on their toes!

    • Ginger says:

I’m sure the Keen one (being the stalker that she is) is looking for a fireplace at this very moment.

      • MyOpinion says:

@ Ginger, while PWT is storming around with his fists decrying that his brother is always well received and has accomplished more in his life 10 fold than him. In the next coming days, there will an enormous push by the Keen CEO thats working tirelessly on her results from the big five question survey and how impressive the results have been. All while PWT is in search of Rose bushes!!

  8. ABritGuest says:

Nice one Harry & Meghan- the teacher & the young poets seemed to really enjoy & be impacted by this zoom call. One said now that Meghan knows her name they should invite Beyonce lol. Seems like a fun, relaxed call- Mason said Harry teased him about his beard& they gave them music tips.

I’ve seen people comment that Anne seems to be really knowledgeable in her engagements too. It’s funny that just ensuring you are well briefed has a real impact on the people you are meeting so with all the time they have royals have no excuse not to be.

The starved trolls should be happy.

    • Sofia says:

I’ve also heard that Sophie is pretty prepared for her engagements and has a genuine interest (or at least does her homework to make it seem like she’s got an interest) in the places/people she’s visiting. Same with Camilla and Charles.

So perhaps NOT being prepared is the exception rather than the rule for the BRF.

      • Becks1 says:

I think that’s probably the case. I imagine that Meghan probably over-prepares, even compared to someone like Charles, but in general I think the feedback re: royals is that they generally are prepared – someone on here a year or so ago said that she met Princess Anne once at a dinner event, and Anne shook every single person’s hand, knew a lot about the organization and the event, etc. and I think similar things can be said for Charles and Camilla and Sophie like you said.

It really seems like the Cambridges are the outliers in terms of making zero effort.

      • Over it says:

So being unprepared for anything work related is strictly a can’tbridge thing? Well at least he prepares his garden tools and her the thread for her buttons .

    • MyOpinion says:

I love that they reached out. Harry and Meghan are genuinely compassionate and caring people individuals and as a couple, they knock it out of the park. It seems that they have always taken their philanthropy seriously, even when they were younger. All that is important to me is that they are happy and thrive. Their treatment in the UK, by the RR, BP, PWT and Petty Betty must have been exhausting and emotionally taxing. They deserve nothing but the best for what the future brings them. They look genuinely happy and engaging. And what a wonderful program to support!!
As for the consistent and racist trolls that have nothing better to do than knock them down at every chance, even regarding speculation, is tiresome and dated. Are they that jaded that they won’t leave them alone?

  9. OriginalLala says:

In HS my absolute favorite class was my North American Lit class, it exposed me at an early age to all kinds of authors and poets who were not included in the regular English Lit curriculum – all this to say, I love this story!

  10. Amy Bee says:

It’s good that Harry and Meghan recognise the importance of Black History month on both the US and the UK.

According to the royal experts and commentators when they look at Harry doing Zoom calls, he’s look unhappy. Every time I see him he looks happy. So, I’m starting to think that these experts and commentators are projecting their feelings of hurt and unhappiness that Harry has left on him. I can’t imagine what is was like for Harry to be put in a situation where he was always expected to lift the spirits of the country when he was mentally struggling. I hope he speaks about that one day.

    • Neesee says:

British Media always take stills of him listening to make him look like he miserable.

    • Ginger says:

The British press are definitely projecting THEIR unhappiness on Harry, for sure. When you look at pictures of Harry (before Meghan) doing engagements with W&K, he looks miserable. Harry now looks happy and relaxed. He said himself he loves it in CA. You could hear his happiness on their podcast. They need him to be miserable because they desperately need him back. They don’t want to be stuck with the Cambridge’s. Someone on twitter said this past weekend that he hated working for the RF but Harry was the only decent one and hates how he was treated.

      • Amy Bee says:

I think it’s interesting that as soon as he got engaged to Meghan he stopped doing public engagements with William and Kate. I know that some people, especially the media loved their joint engagements but it’s obvious that he hated them and couldn’t wait to stop doing them. I saw that tweet about Harry being the only decent person, I believe that.

  11. L84Tea says:

I love that everyone looks genuinely excited to see them. What lucky folks. This also made me realize how much I miss seeing Meghan.

    • MyOpinion says:

@ L84Tea, me too!! I miss seeing them as well!! But how thrilling and an exceptional reach out to this organization!! They are truly dedicated to each and every organization/program that they reach out too!! There are no missteps and they are genuinely interested and want so much to make a difference no matter, big or small!!! Such an amazing impact that have had made on each and every student!! A memorable experience for them to have and a memory to cherish!!!
I have big crushes on them and the Obamas, as I love seeing them too!! I am still on a high from seeing Michelle Obama at the inauguration!! My god, what a fierce and gorgeous woman!!

  12. Harper says:

Meghan looks fabulous! So glad she was able to take time out from coming up with arcane ways to snub Kate and interact with a worthy cause. And Harry the hostage is doing a great job of pretending to be interested in poetry while eyeing the door to see if the guards are taking a break thus giving him an opening to make a run for it.

    • Yoyo says:

He had a chance to escape when he was on the bus with James Corden, his fellow Brit, could have him driven straight to the airport.

      • Hell Nah! says:

Ha ha ha – thank you for this. Every morning needs an unexpected warming cackle – love it!

    • Laura says:

It’s seriously like that one meme.

What the press thinks Megan is doing: obsessing over Kate and coming up with the stupidest most irrelevant ways to snub her.
What W&K think Megan is doing: practicing witchcraft to keep Harry with her and keep herself more popular than the Cambridges.
What the Queen thinks Megan is doing: writing rap songs about social justice and trans issues, so she can be both “urban” and “woke”.
What Harry thinks Megan is doing: being a glorious angel of love and light [okay I might be a *little* in love with them].
What we think Megan is doing: chilling out, living in well-deserved luxury, raising her son, playing with her dogs, hanging out with her husband, making food for her mother in her huge mansion.
What Megan is actually doing: elevating people and groups that are making the world a better place, and learning each child at this GetLit meeting’s biography.

      • Harper says:

        Love this! So true.

      • Dee Kay says:

        *applause*

      • SarahCS says:

        Brilliant.

      • MyOpinion says:

Well said! Add to that, what Harry is doing? Loving his life in California with his spectacular wife and enjoying the ability to spread his wings as he adjusts to life after royal life and finding it’s pretty fucking spectacular!! Harry no longer worries about protocols, invests in programs that make a difference and eating outside with a beautiful view and having the sun shine on his face. Happily getting up in the morning to get Archie out of bed and rolling around on the floor with him or playing outside with the dogs. Not having his day and life dictated to him and choosing the causes that are important to himself and Meghan. At night, sitting in front of the fireplace with Meghans legs draped over his as he rubs her feet as they talk and drink a little wine. Plus, he gets to be with his family without interruptions and being harassed by the rags.

  13. Over it says:

They look so good and happy, their smiles reach their eyes. I hope they take the next zooming to the Hollywood sign, let’s see the copybridges try to copy that . Got to say if Harry looks like this while being Meghan hostage, he should have let her kidnap him 10 years ago because hostage looks damm good on him.

  14. L4frimaire says:

This was so unexpected and so positive. The kids faces on the Zoom shot are priceless. HuffPost had a good article on this. One of the girls started crying after the Sussexes logged off because it was so surreal to her and they didn’t want them to leave ( they were there 45 minutes). It was great they did their homework before hand and learned about the students. One said Meghan gave them confidence. Was really sweet and such a good way to celebrate Black History month.

  15. Lilly (with the double-L) says:

Love getting a glimpse of this and them. As I look back on my childhood and how very poor we were, literature and reading and those who inspired my love of reading, saved me in so many ways. It was definitely a love that helped me change things for my adult life and gain resiliency. As a child, it was such a great escape into other worlds as well.

  16. Larisa says:

Wow, if that comment of Meghan’s about alchemy and turned and churned and something solid is off the cuff, I’m seriously impressed. What a truly poetic way to frame that.

  17. The Recluse says:

So cool and so very nice. The BRF really screwed up by running these two off.

  18. Nyro says:

With just a blurry screencap and a few anecdotes from the kids and their teacher, HM have garnered international press. No video at all and they’re still top story.

Just reading about their reactions, I can imagine how excited the kids were to see them. Compare that to the complete non-reaction the Cambridge got when they walked the red carpet with the kids a while back. Silence for the future King and Queen. Can you imagine Harry and Meghan stepping out on a red carpet and having literally no one acknowledge their existence? The royals had better be glad the dealing James Bond premiers won’t be happening thanks to covid. The response that the Sussexes would get on a Hollywood red carpet would bury the Cambridge.

  19. blunt talker says:

I love that they are prepared when doing zoom meetings-To me it means they care enough about what they are doing and present things in a positive light-Both of them are glowing and that makes my heart flutter thinking about the positive good they can do in this world. GOD’S SPEED TO THE SUSSEX FAMILY.
