Prince Harry turns 25 years old, comes into millions of dollars

Today is Prince Harry’s 25th birthday! Not only does this make him one year cuter and one year more ginger (and one more year closer to the Windsor genes kicking in), but this is the birthday in which the first part of Prince Harry’s fortune kicks in. After Princess Diana died, her will left her monetary assets to her two underage sons, William and Harry. The exact total of the money split between the two princes was around $20-25 million. Most reports today indicate that the princes’ trust were set up as equals, but I’ve heard other reports over the years that suggested that Harry would get a larger share of his mother’s assets – because he wasn’t going to be king. Alas, the way the trusts were established means that Harry can’t blow all of his millions on his on-again girlfriend Chelsy Davy. He can only blow hundreds of thousands on her per year, until he turns 30.

Britain’s Prince Harry turned 25 Tuesday in the knowledge that he is now entitled to part of the multi-million dollar inheritance left to him by his late mother.

Harry was just 12 years old when Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

His mother left an estate worth £21 million ($35 million), but more than £8 million ($13.31 million) was paid in inheritance tax, leaving around £13 million ($21.6 million) to be shared between Harry and his brother William, who is second in line to the throne, the British Press Association reported.

Much of that money is thought to have been invested but it is not known if the economic downturn has affected the amount.

Both princes are prevented from spending the lump sum of their inheritance until they turn 30. But Harry will pocket all income generated by his portion of the estate — around £300,000 ($500,000) a year.

Prince Harry joined the British Army in 2006 and served in Afghanistan for more than two months from the end of 2007 to early 2008, before being withdrawn after news of his secret deployment leaked out to the media.

There had been fears that Harry, who is third in line to the throne, could become a target for Taliban militants.

According to British media reports, the prince’s deployment was subject to a news blackout deal struck between the Ministry of Defence and newspapers and broadcasters in the UK and abroad.

He received a promotion to the rank of lieutenant in April last year and is now training to become a helicopter pilot with the British Army’s Air Corps.

The young royal has also created a few negative headlines, particularly in Britain’s tabloid press, in recent years. In February this year, he was formally disciplined by his Army superiors after videos surfaced showing him using offensive language — referring to a fellow soldier as a “Paki” and another as looking “like a raghead.”

A spokesman for the prince told CNN: “Prince Harry has apologized for his comments and has been subjected to normal Army disciplinary procedures. The matter is now closed.”

In a well-publicized gaffe in 2005, Harry apologized after he was photographed wearing a Nazi uniform at a party.

“It was a very stupid thing to do and I’ve learned my lesson, simple as that really,” he said in an interview marking his 21st birthday. “I’d like to put it in the past now. What’s done is done. I regret it.”

I’ve also heard some rumblings that after Diana’s death, the Queen “matched funds” in the trusts, effectively doubling the princes’ inheritance. So William and Harry could conceivably be coming into $30 million each, something like that. Sigh. Harry also has no plans to leave the military – so that means he’s probably going to be picking up the tab at more than a few drunken nights with enlisted men.

Sigh. I wish Harry wanted me and not Chelsy. I love a Ginger Prince. And Virgo men. Happy Birthday, Prince Harry!

Sorry, but I have my doubts that the “Windsor” genes will ever be kicking in.

  2. HEB says:

By Windsor genes to you mean balding…? Or becoming responsible?

I feel they (and their father before them) are channeling their grandfather’s gallavanting ways–so its going to be at least 10 years before they settle down and the Windsor kicks in and the Mountbatten in them kicks out.

  3. embertine says:

I think Firestarter’s comments refer to Harry’s paternity. 😉 Yes?

  4. HEB says:

ha ha embertine, but I don’t doubt the paternity. Red hair was pretty common in Diana’s family. Plus the dates don’t add up.

  5. Iggles says:

Well, if the paternity rumors were true, I don’t think he would still be in the line of succession. Regardless, in not looking much like Charles he dodged a big bullet. Poor William…

  6. Jones says:

Members of the Royal Family who are titled His (of Her) Royal Highness do not traditionally need or use a surname. Windsor is the name of the Royal House to which they belong. Their titles are HRH Prince William of Wales and HRH Prince Henry of Wales. During their current tours of duty with the Armed Forces, the Princes have chosen to show their surname as Wales. Members of the royal family who are not HRH (for example Prince Edward’s children Louise and James) use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor. In addition, Prince Harry has the very distinct eyes of the Windsor family, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Charles have similar facial features.

  7. HEB says:

Nice information Jones but I don’t think anyone asked.
Yes Harry calles himself Harry Wales instead of Harry Windsor but what does that have to do with whether or not he looks like a Windsor?

  8. Allie says:

I wonder if he will even notice that he’s inherited millions of dollars. Doesn’t he already live a life of extreme luxury where everything is taken care of for him (excluding his military service which I know is hard work)?

  9. KDRockstar says:

Why Chelsea? She looks like a piglet.

  10. kelly138 says:

God, I’m old. I remember when Harry and his brother were toddlers.

  11. Jones says:

The explaination for the Princes sir-name was intend for you, Heb not that you asked for one of course. A Windsor is a Mountbatten..therefore your comment regarding the “Windsor kicking in and the Mountbatten kicking them out” does not add up logically.

  12. militarymom says:

@Kaiser – Prince Harry won’t be having any drunken nights with “enlisted” men, because he is an Officer, and not permitted to socialize with enlisted troops.

  13. gg says:

This sure as hell makes it have to do with him not having the Windsor kick in:

Dates, schmates — all it takes is one shtup. Same smile, same nose, eyes, eyebrows, hair, teeth, same face. He looks far more like Hewitt than Spencer OR His Royal Dumbass. I don’t believe their little “timeline” BS for a second. I’m so glad she screwed around on that philanderer; Chuckie deserved it.

The whole paternity thing has been whitewashed and they just pretend he’s a Windsor, which I think is a damn lucky thing for him since the Windsors aren’t anything to brag about, genewise. And he’s still in line for the throne, per the whitewash job. So, good for him!

    TEAM HARRY NON-WINDSOR GENE! HUZZAH!

  14. Tia C says:

@ gg: I couldn’t agree with you more. I have always thought Harry is Hewitt’s son. There’s really not much, short of a notarized hard copy of a negative DNA test, that would convince me otherwise, lol. Yeah, and so what? Obviously the royal family has accepted things as they are and moved on.

  15. CYANN says:

There is a striking resemblence between Harry and Huelett, but he does look a bit like Charles too. They would never admit it if he didn’t belong to Charles.

  16. Gistine says:

Dang, he is hot. Like scorching!

  17. latvian lady says:

Harry’s got his father’s nose — and by that I mean Charles’ nose. The older he gets, the more he really does look like Charles. Too bad — it would of been interesting if he was illegit.

  18. londoner says:

Im sorry…are we looking at the same person? Average at best.

  19. Firestarter says:

Iggles- As IF the Royal family would out Harry as not being Charles’ son?! That would be more of a disgrace than anything. There is no chance really that Harry would ever assume the crown, and probably by the time Queen Elizabeth kicks it, there may not be a monarchy anymore, so the point is mute.

Those who believe he is Charles son, well good. But I am part of a very large group that feels Harry is a Hewitt. He is almost identical. Charles loves the boy, but I assure you, they more than likely do not care, as long as no one else knows the truth.

  20. Andrea says:

You people who say that Harry looks like Hewitt are idiots. He looks exactly like Charles, not Hewitt. Plus Diana didn’t even meet Hewitt until a couple of years after Harry’s birth. Like I said, idiots.

  21. yae says:

I wonder how much actual GOOD he will do in the world with all that money?

Oh nevermind, we know the answer is ……….absolutely nothing.

  22. For Sooth? says:

This is about the time when the royals start to turn the smile into a frown, so to speak. William was about the same age when his looks started to turn. Harry may be “Hot Ginge” right now but we’ll see what he looks like a about a year.

  23. Firestarter says:

@Andrea- Well, sorry to burst your know-it-all bubble, but Hewitt met Princess Diana BEFORE she was married to Charles. They met at a Polo match that Prince Charles and Hewitt were both playing in. They had many encounters, by both her account and Hewitts account , between the birth of Prince William and Prince Harry. Perhaps you should check your facts before you start calling people idiots.

  24. Mairead says:

as a republican (in the Roman fashion), I don’t know why I’m interested, but, red hair and pale eyebrows aren’t conclusive proof that Hewitt’s genes had anything to do with Harry (and why anyone would wish them on the poor boy is beyond me).

A number of the Spencers also have that dark-red hair. And Charles Spencer even has the same colour paler eyebrows. To me, Harry’s got the Windsor nose for definite.

EDIT… I thought the Windsor/Wales thing was a post-WW1 construct; they’re really of the House of Saxe Coburg-Gothe (or words to that effect). They chose it to tone down the German background of the family. Or something?

  25. Helen says:

We mean inheriting tax payers money

  26. Andrea says:

    Dear Firestarter:

Diana and Hewitt didn’t even meet until 1986-two years AFTER Harry was born. Even Hewitt said this!

    Idiot! Idiote!

  27. gg says:

I believe the supposed meeting timeline is complete BS. I’ve read it all and I still think it’s crap. Methinks they’ve protested too much.

Also have looked up scads of photos and I still have yet to see even the remotest bit of Charles in Harry. It’s not just the hair color, it’s the entire package. See my earlier post above. The nose is Diana’s if you ask me. Diana had quite the long nose. And Harry is the only Windsor without the famous large front teeth. And Diana also had quite the motive to shtup around on Chuckie.

  28. Andrea says:

Harry looks largely like Diana’s side of the family. Her side has the red hair. Harry has Charles’ eyes and expressions. Charles and Diana were very close when she was pregnant with Harry. But after his birth-Charles had wanted a girl-Charles threw Diana away, including refusing to have relations with her, for Camilla. And so Diana sought solace elsewhere and unfortunately one of those places was with Hewitt.

  29. gg says:

By which, I mean I think Hewitt’s lying to save face, with his little account of the “official” meeting timeline. I could of course be dead wrong, it’s just my thoughts on the subject. There is probably at least a recessive red hair gene in many British families so it’s never uncommon.

And I have to stick up for firestarter here – don’t call names, please. thanks.
